According to Britannica, a musical composition is the art of conceiving and creating music. I love to sing, and I very much enjoy listening to music. That part I get, but to compose music, to pick out the notes, the instruments… I'm completely at a loss. Fortunately, we have three women composers with us today who will explain what it means to be a female composer in today's music world. For this BCR program, we spoke with Svjetlana Bukvich, best known for her blending of classical music, media and electronic music. Sarajevo-born and NYC-based -- Svjetlana is widely regarded as an innovative, dynamic, multimedia American composers. Her music has been heard at The Kennedy Center, the Tribeca Film Festival, Brooklyn's Bargemusic, Rose Studio at Lincoln Center – and many other venues.Beth Anderson Harold is a composer of new romantic music, text-sound works, and music theatre events. Her early work was considered post-Cagian and non-academic. Beth studied with John Cage, Terry Riley, Robert Ashley and Larry Austin at Mills College and U.C. Davis. You can catch her beautiful compositions at New World Records and many other places on the web.Gramophone described Debra Kaye as “an eclectic unfolding of creativity.” Debra has won 6 Global Music Awards and received grants from Mannes College, Meet the Composer, and Edward T. Cone Foundation; and commissions from the Howland Chamber Music Circle and Portland Youth Philharmonic; Ms Kay's works have premiered at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, in collaboration with the Lincoln Trio and Daedalus Quartet. AB-5 sucks! Covid sucks! Zoom school SUCKS! 2020 pretty much sucked. But you know what doesn't suck? Being an everyday hero like our guest Christiane Cargill Kinney. As an entertainment lawyer, Christiane Kinney has represented Platinum-selling and Grammy-winning artists and estates as well as independent artists, Presidential candidates, festivals, music tech start-ups, artists, and avatars (wha!?). A consummate creative, Chris is also an award-winning singer/songwriter, a voting member of the Recording Academy, and has won numerous awards from Billboard, ASCAP, the International Songwriting Competition, and the Global Music Awards, to name a few. She's been recognized as the #1 Music Law Resource to follow on Twitter (by CD Baby), and was named in Glamour Magazine's Woman of the Year issue for her charity work in bringing music and art programs to at-risk youth in Southern California. A frequent speaker on entertainment law panels, radio talk shows, Chris wrote a regular legal advice column for CD Baby to provide legal guidance to independent artists. Yet somehow on top of all this, she's also a recording musician, a mom of two and still manages to stay constantly upbeat with a wicked sense of humor! In this episode, Steve and Chris discuss the pitfalls and joys(?) of the new normal: Zoom work, Zoom school, house concerts, social media meltdowns, and the melee that is parenting during quarantine. And as if the rest of 2020 wasn't enough, Chris was thrown a curveball along with the rest of us when the entertainment industry shut down in the wake of COVID-19. Undaunted, Chris saw this as an opportunity to found her own entertainment law firm, Kinney Law, P.C. in June of 2020, focusing on ways she could help artists and offset the substantial loss in touring revenue during these unprecedented times. Christiane discovered her love for the piano when she was only three years old. After seeing the musical production “Annie,” she immediately went home and plinked out all the songs by ear. As Chris recalls, “...There were moments in those shows where the artists I'm sure were tapping into the soul of their instruments.” Chris and Steve go on to geek out about their love for pianos and explore what it was that got them into music. As Chris says, “I think every musician will tell you, there's not a choice... you just have to do it... it calls to you in a really deep, meaningful way where, that is what you do.” Will this be the “MOST DEPRESSING PODCAST EVER!”? or will laughter prevail as the best medicine? The beautiful lawns and meadow of Bloedel Reserve will again this year be the venue for three concerts over the summer, two classical ones wrapped around a rockin' high energy concert in the middle of the summer. Tickets for this Saturday evening June 24th concert are available at this Bloedel Reserve webpage. Doors open at 6pm for the outdoor concert behind the mansion overlooking Puget Sound. You may bring a picnic but not alcoholic beverages. Sales of wine and beer that night at the concert will benefit Bloedel's programs. In this podcast, Shayla Miles, Programs and Events Manager of Bloedel Reserve tells BCB about the summer concert series, titled “Music with a View.” She is joined in the interview by the featured violinist of the June 24th opening concert. We meet Dr. Quinton Morris, who is described as having “a multifaceted career as concert violinist, educator, entrepreneur, and filmmaker.” As the opening concert, Quintin Morris will begin the series setting a high standard. He will perform three sonatas for violin and keyboard by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, accompanied by Erin Chung on the piano. There will also be a film screening of “The BREAKTHROUGH”, which premiered at the Seattle Art Museum and the Louvre in Paris among other distinguished locations. “The film explores the music and history of the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a musician of African origin who, against all odds, rose to become one of the most prolific and forgotten figures of the 18th century.” The film has been featured in film festivals in Las Vegas and New York, and it won the “Diamond Award” top prize at the European Independent Film Awards in Paris and the bronze award at the Global Music Awards in Los Angeles. In celebration of the 270th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Boulogne (better known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges), Quinton Morris created "The BREAKTHROUGH": a short film telling a modernized story of the 18th century athlete, concert violinist, and composer. Quinton performs Saint-George's three violin sonatas and makes his acting debut as the historical violinist in this visionary film capturing key aspects of musician's life. Sebastien Quequet, Head of Cultural Programs at Les Arts Decoratifs at the Louvre Museum at the Paris Premiere of "The BREAKTHROUGH", January 21, 2016, described the film as: “Creative and innovative—combining an academic lecture with a stellar performance and film with the lecturer as the musician, actor, and filmmaker should inspire everyone to aim towards success.” Credits: BCB host: Channie Peters; BCB audio editor and social media publisher: Barry Peters.
