Spirit of God E1 — In 2017, we released a 3-episode series on the theme of the Holy Spirit. And now eight years later, we've decided there's still a lot more to reflect on and explore! The word we translate in English as “spirit” is ruakh in the Hebrew Bible and pneuma in the Greek New Testament. The word refers to God's personal presence, but it also often refers to wind, breath, and a human's mind. So how can this word refer to God's manifest presence and energy, but also created things? In this episode, Jon and Tim kick off a new expanded series on the Spirit of God. CHAPTERS The Frequency of Ruakh and Pneuma in the Bible (0:00-13:32) The Meaning of Ruakh (13:32-25:05) The Paradox of Wind and God's Spirit (25:05-40:39) Ruakh as a Mind or Idea (40:39-53:39) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode's official transcript. Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Elder Drew Howard opened Week 7 of "Ruach to Pneuma" by drawing a careful distinction that builds on last week: being indwelled by the Holy Spirit and being filled with Him are not the same thing. Indwelling, he explained from Ephesians 1:13, is the seal every believer receives at salvation, permanent, unconditional, and positional. Filling, from Ephesians 5:18, is His influence, and it is repeatable, conditional, and experiential, rising and falling with our response to Him. Working through the account of the ark of God in First and Second Samuel, Drew showed both the warning and the way. Israel first treated the ark as a good luck charm, carrying it into battle to force God's hand, and the result was disaster, defeat, the ark captured, and a child named Ichabod, "the glory has departed." His first warning landed there: God is not a genie in a bottle or a Santa Claus, and we must never use Him as a token to get what we want. Then, tracing David's life, Drew drew out five marks of a Spirit-filled life. Live out the calling God has given you, using your gifts for His glory. Inquire of the Lord and seek His will rather than your own. Seek your answers in the Word and live according to it, as David learned when moving the ark carelessly brought death and moving it God's way brought blessing. Sing songs of praise that fill the heart, as David danced before the Lord with all his might. And own it, be unashamed of being filled with the Spirit, even under the contemptuous gaze of David's wife Michal. Drew was honest that being filled can look a little crazy to a watching world, a Bible open on your desk at work, a mission trip instead of a vacation, and that this is exactly the point. He closed with a final warning drawn from Michal: be careful how you judge others who are worshiping in the Spirit.

(In Epistolam ad Ephesios, I, 1,2,3 ; PG 62:11-14)。

Pastor Russell Johnson opened Week 6 of "Ruach to Pneuma" with the season he and Terri were expecting their twins: preterm labor at 24 weeks, eight weeks of hospital bed rest an hour from home, and both grandmothers moving in two weeks at a time to bring the family stability, security, and assurance. That became his picture for the morning, the permanent Resident every believer carries. Walking through Romans 8:9-11, he showed that Paul's repeated "if" is not doubt but settled fact: if you belong to Christ, the Spirit already dwells in you, not as a second stage or a reward for the advanced, but as the immediate consequence of saving faith. He is a Resident, not a guest, and the same Spirit who raised Jesus now lives in you. From Ephesians 1:13-14, Pastor Russell then opened the seal along three lines: security that only a greater authority could break, ownership that marks you as bought and belonging, and a down payment, the Greek arrabon, the first installment of an inheritance guaranteed to be paid in full. You cannot grieve Him away or fail Him away. You are sealed for the day of redemption, and the invitation is to stop striving for a security you already possess.

Student Pastor Eric Wischmann opened Week 5 of "Ruach to Pneuma" by reflecting on the birth of his daughter Ivy in April and how becoming a father, as becoming a husband and a pastor before it, exposed his weakness and reminded him of the cycles we carry and pass down, good and bad. He named struggles many of us feel powerless against, including anger, insecurity, addiction, and arrogance, and asked how we break these cycles. His answer was that cycles are not broken by trying harder; they are broken when God makes someone new. Turning to John 3, Pastor Eric walked through three truths about the new birth: its necessity, its means, and its gift.Pastor Eric then explained the new birth as a gift. Jesus pointed Nicodemus to Ezekiel's promise of a new heart and new spirit, and to the bronze serpent in the wilderness, where dying people were healed by looking in faith at what God lifted up. In the same way, Jesus would be lifted up on the cross, and whoever believes in Him has eternal life from the moment of belief. This gift is unconditional and undeserved, purchased entirely by Christ, and adding any of our own credit denies the sufficiency of His work and the Spirit's work. He closed by saying we are no longer slaves to sin. The cycles that have felt unstoppable can end because the Spirit now lives in us, and the church should live so changed that others notice, as people who take responsibility for their sin, seek help, and live as new creations in Christ.

The Holy Spirit at Pentecost and in the Early Church

Faith Bible Church Sermons

Pastor Jamey Bryant opened Week 4 of "Ruach to Pneuma" with Thomas Paine's pamphlet "Common Sense," the little document that, written in plain language a farmer or shopkeeper could read aloud in a tavern, fanned the colonists' quiet discontent into an open flame and helped birth a nation we are about to celebrate at 250 years. He used it to point to a far greater catalytic moment: Pentecost, the birth of the church and the day the Holy Spirit came to indwell God's people and never left. Walking through Acts 2, Pastor Jamey set the scene with the disciples waiting in the upper room for ten days, doing exactly what Jesus told them to do, holding onto His promise that it was to their advantage that He go away so the Spirit could come. He reminded us that Pentecost itself predates the church, an ancient harvest festival tied to God's provision and the giving of the Law, which makes the wind and fire of Acts 2 all the more fitting: just as God gave the Law with fire at Sinai, He now gave a gift greater than the Law, the Spirit, with fire as the sign of His indwelling presence. Then came the tongues, and here Pastor Jamey was careful. This was not chaos or babbling, but real, known languages, each visitor from across the world suddenly hearing these common Galileans declare the mighty works of God in his own heart language. The Spirit chose to reach each person at the heart level, and the whole purpose was to shine the spotlight not on the speakers, not even on Himself, but on Jesus. From there, Pastor Jamey turned to Peter, transformed. Fifty days after denying Jesus three times, Peter stood before thousands and boldly proclaimed Him, declaring that the One they crucified God had raised and made both Lord and Christ. The crowd was pierced to the heart and cried out, "What shall we do?" Pastor Jamey took time with Peter's answer in Acts 2:38, the call to repent and be baptized, and walked carefully through how it holds together with salvation by faith alone in Christ alone. He showed that the people had already believed by the end of Peter's sermon and that Peter was calling that specific generation, guilty of rejecting the Father's, the Son's, and the Spirit's testimony, to come out from under judgment. He reminded us that Acts is a transitional book, a little messy as the early believers figured things out in real time, and that we get into trouble when we build an entire theology on one snapshot rather than reading it alongside the rest of the New Testament. He closed with the wonder of it: three thousand souls added that day, a church devoted to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer, and the same Spirit who indwelt and empowered them still indwelling us, still giving boldness, still sending the gospel out, and still inviting us to participate today.

Continua...

As children of God, we carry His authority and His Spirit. That means we're not called to keep the peace at all costs, but to bring a deeper, Spirit-led peace into our relationships, our conversations, and even the hardest situations. This kind of peace doesn't come from avoiding tension. It comes from stepping fully into who God says you are. There are things going on that do not reflect Christ in that church and Paul is saying to them, “What are yall doing? Why do yall have divisions among you? Yall should all be focused on Jesus and nobody else!” Why? Because they have been given freely the Holy Spirit of God and through the Spirit, they have the mind of Christ and God reveals His secrets to them through His Spirit.

Open Table MCC Sunday Worship Podcast

Now when all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3:21-22 NRSVUE What if the doctrine of the Trinity—often seen as a rigid, confusing math problem—was actually one of the most radical, inclusive, and “queer” ideas in history? At Open Table MCC, we believe the Trinity isn’t just an ancient dogma; it is a vibrant invitation to community. While many progressive spaces might shy away from traditional doctrines due to their historical misuse, we choose to reclaim them. We dig beneath the layers of colonial and imperial history to find the liberating truth at the center: God is not a solitary ruler, but a community of love. Beyond the Binary The history of the Trinity goes back to the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The early church wrestled with a massive question: Was Jesus truly God, or just a human? Was he divine, or created?. The Council's answer was refusal to choose a binary. They declared Jesus is both fully God and fully human. They affirmed that God is One, yet Three—Parent, Child, and Spirit. To the human mind, this is “mental gymnastics”. But to the soul, it is a profound truth: God transcends our limited categories. God is relational, not individual: The very “Godness” of God is relationship, not isolation. God is diverse: The Trinity unsettles the idea of a single, static monarch. Instead, we see a dynamic “Divine Dance”. Why the Trinity is “Queer” In our theological reflection, we dare to say that the Trinity is “queer”. Why? Because “queer” theology is about disrupting norms, questioning binaries, and finding the divine in the margins. It disrupts the norm: The Trinity unsettles strict monotheism by revealing a God who is both one and three. It affirms bodies: By declaring Jesus as fully human, the Trinity affirms that God has a body, a gender, and sexuality. God knows what it is to be brown-skinned, marginalized, and oppressed under empire. It invites fluidity: If God is a community of three persons, we can imagine a God who holds the fullness of the gender spectrum—Parent (Father/Mother), Son (Child), and Spirit (often associated with female or gender-neutral imagery like Ruach or Pneuma). A Promise, Not Just a Doctrine We know the doctrine of the Trinity has been used as a tool for colonization and violence. We do not ignore that history. However, we also see it as a “promise and an idea,” much like the city of Oz in the musical Wicked. It is a promise that love is not solitary. As our pastor shared, “To have faith in the Trinity is to realize that you are created in the image and likeness of this divine community”. You were created from love and for love. And just as God is a community, you can only truly experience that love through community and relationship. Living the Trinity So, what does a 1,700-year-old doctrine have to do with us today? It calls us to embody that same relational love. As Creators: We mirror the Parent/Creator when we make art, write poetry, or build something new. As Redeemers: We mirror Jesus when we forgive others and work for justice. As Advocates: We mirror the Holy Spirit when we guide, help, and stand beside one another. At Open Table MCC, we don’t just recite the creed; we dance it. We invite you to join this divine community where diversity is holy, and no one is meant to be alone. Did you know the Church in Philadelphia was the only one in Revelation that Jesus had no correction for? He called them faithful, steadfast, and true. Even though they had little strength, they kept His Word and did not deny His name.Philadelphia was known as the “missionary church,” a doorway city used to spread the gospel to surrounding regions, and that's exactly what Jesus promised: “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.”This reminds us that faithfulness isn't about how strong we feel, but how steadfast we remain. When we walk through the doors God opens, He does the rest.Messages, teaching and encouragement from Pneuma Life Church pastors and leaders!  Do you need the Holy Spirit? In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally helps us understand that the Holy Spirit isn't optional in the Christian life—He's the source of it. Who Is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is God. The Hebrew word Ruach and the Greek word Pneuma both mean "wind" or "breath." The Holy Spirit is a person—He feels, speaks, and can be hurt by how we live. Ephesians 4:30 (NLT): "Do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live." 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (ESV): "Do not quench the Spirit." You determine how much of the Spirit you experience. The Holy Spirit isn't a power you use—He's a person you know. What Is the Holy Spirit Like? The Holy Spirit isn't weird—people are. Like the wind, He is: Invisible. John 14:17 (NIV). You may not see Him, but you can see His results. Unpredictable. John 3:8 (NIV). You can't control or schedule Him—you can only make room for Him. What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He provides power. Acts 1:8 (NLT): "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." He isn't an accessory; He's the power supply. He gives gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:4 (NLT): "...different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all." They're for showing love, not off. He cleanses us. 1 Corinthians 6:11 (NLT): "...you were cleansed... by the Spirit of our God." Jesus forgives sin; the Spirit fixes character. He teaches us. John 14:26 (ESV): "...the Helper... will teach you all things..." He turns Scripture from words you read into words you live. He guides us. Romans 8:14 (NLT): "...all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God." He's your guide and guardrail—follow Him, and you won't lose your way. He helps us. John 14:16–17 (NIV): "...he will give you another advocate to help you..." When you can't, He can. He convicts us. John 16:8 (NLT): "He will convict the world of its sin." Conviction draws you to God. "It's God's job to judge, the Spirit's to convict, and ours to love." —Billy Graham He fellowships with us. 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NLT): "... the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." He wants relationship, not visitation rights. Closing At the source of the Nile, a hidden spring flows north, bringing life wherever it goes. When the Holy Spirit is your source, your life flows upward toward God. John 7:38–39 (NIV): "Rivers of living water will flow from within them... By this he meant the Spirit." Stay connected to the Source—and His life will flow through every part of yours. Is the Holy Spirit your source?
