Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is a leading voice in modern faith leadership and the first woman elected to serve as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, a role she's held since 2011. While the job isn't always glamorous, she says, the sacred moments in the public eye matter deeply—and she treats them with care. Bishop Budde gained national attention for boldly speaking out against the Trump administration, including condemning the 2020 photo-op at St. John's Episcopal Church and, more recently, offering a prayer for LGBTQ+ justice with President Trump and Vice President Vance seated before her. Her calm, courageous leadership has made her one of the most trusted voices in public faith today. In this conversation with Jen, Bishop Budde shares her journey from a small Minnesota congregation to the national stage—and how she finds the courage to speak truth to power and stand with the marginalized, even when the cost is high. Thought-provoking Quotes: “I think, in some ways, vocations choose you as much as you choose them.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “It's not as if the world stopped on January 21st. So much is happening every single day and there are consequences to the decisions being made.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “I wouldn't have chosen the way they're going, but a lot is being dismantled right now and we've got to be there to help rebuild.” – Mariann Edgar Budde Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Raygun: Bishop Budde Fan Club T-Shirt - https://www.raygunsite.com/products/bishop-budde-fan-club Receiving Jesus: The Way of Love by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/45GO5jh How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/4kbZtan Sermon by The Right Rev. “Find the Stories to Leave For Good.” Welcome to the Faith in a Fresh Vibe podcast! There's space for you at the table. Receive this invitation to listen and learn, bemoan and curse, celebrate and liberate, around ideas towards deconstructing and decolonizing the Christian faith. This is Episode 1 in a serial series called: Farewell Evangelicalism. In this series we will interrogate the main pillars of formation in the evangelical tradition to answer the question: is evangelicalism still a legitimate expression of the Christian faith? And if not, what would it take to see more people leave the tradition? We give the insight and the tools to interrogate the movement and identify its malformed formation. It’s the first quarter of 2025, which is important to name, because depending on which side of the political spectrum you're on, and which country you're from, you're either in shock of the political upheaval dumped on your country, or you everything is trending your way. Amidst waves of confusion is a simple truth: the current state wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the unwavering support from white evangelicals. We ask the question: would society be better off if more people left evangelicalism? If you're on the fence about that, this series will help, as we offer tools and pathways for more folks to say, Farewell Evangelicalism! Episode 1 – Show Notes (00:00) – Introduction (01:00) – Setting the Table (01:50) – Saying Farewell to Evangelicalism (02:40) – Who is this podcast for? (04:45) – Introducing your host, Rohadi! The National Cathedral's Prayer service the day after President Donald Trump's inauguration has stirred up a controversy that's been brewing in Christianity for decades, if not more. It's the divisiveness over how the Body of Christ should respond to the LGBTQ community. Forget how the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Washington D.C., chose to use her pulpit to scold the newly re-minted President of the United States; that's actually a side bar to the real concern. The underlying dispute is Mainline Protestantism's schism over gender and sexuality. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, culture expert and theologian Dr. Alex McFarland, a frequent podcast guest, uncovers the long-simmering discord in Christianity that simply can't be ignored any longer. Much of what Dr. McFarland says may be unsettling to many people, if not downright offensive. But he says, if The Bible is indeed God's Word, and faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation, then he is called to speak the truth in love. Learn more about your ad choices. The Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, senior pastor of the Chautauqua Institution, delivers a compelling sermon titled "Here Comes the Judge!" Reflecting on Numbers 11:4-29 and Mark 9:38-50, Bishop Sutton confronts the age-old tension between judgment and discernment within the Christian faith. "Judgmentalism is a social sin: it is the habit of constantly finding fault with what others say and do." In this message, he calls us to seek understanding with humility and love, urging us to discern as God discerns.

"What fence needs moving in your life? How does God's love for you, God's unfailing love for you, make you want to open up for others?" The Right Rev. V. Gene Robinson reflects on the two central commandments that God gave us to follow - to love God with all our hearts and minds and to love our neighbors as ourselves. "It opens us up to see one another as the children of God we are. And to strive every day to treat them like the children of God they are. Jesus was raising the bar and doing us all a favor."

"Oh, but black worshipers and visitors, they knew. You knew, you knew what we chose not to know, and what we knew for years and tried not to know, or minimize, 'til we couldn't any longer. And I played a part in all that, and I apologize." In her sermon this Sunday, the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Diocese of Washington reckoned with the lost cause myth and the role the Cathedral played in perpetuating it and considered the ways we are working to atone for past wrongs and build Beloved Community.

"It's important to note that the role of faith here is not in stopping the storm. Faith rarely stops a storm. But what faith promises is to enable Peter to walk just on the water without falling, without drowning, to literally walk on troubled waters." In his Sunday sermon, the Right Rev. V. Gene Robinson considered the potential impact of faith.
The Crossing: Sermons and Services from the National Cathedral
“The Franciscan priest Richard Rohr makes the case that Christ is universal.3 It's not that everyone is Christian, but the truth of Christ, the life force we find in Christ, isn't only available for those who follow Jesus. If that life force finds expression in other traditions, praise the God who loves diversity and show no partiality. For all our differences, we are one human race. This fragile earth is the island home for us all.” The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde tells us the significance of the resurrection, and how it is the bringing of one to a new life, not a return to life as before. Resurrection implies change, a turning point. Jesus's new life gives us a new life as well, one filled with faith, love, and learning.
The Crossing: Sermons and Services from the National Cathedral
"So maybe our New Year's resolutions this New Year's day should be less about losing weight and getting more exercise and joining a new book club and more about what kinds of risks do I need to take right now in my life for my own good, for that of my family or my neighbors and friends. Perhaps the nation itself, perhaps for human kind. How can I be more Christlike and vulnerably opening myself to some new and daunting and risky challenge?” The Right Rev. V. Gene Robinson encourages us to be vulnerable and to have courage as we go into the New Year, and celebrate Holy Name Day. Looking to God as our guide, to make this not only a good year, but a “new kind of year.”
