Wednesday, 12 August 2026   and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. Matthew 22:3   “And he sent, the ‘servants, his' to call those having been called to the nuptials. And not they inclined to come.” (CG)   In the previous verse, it was noted that the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son. Jesus next says, “And he sent, the ‘servants, his'.”   Various suggestions are given for who these servants represent:   “...the servants, are John the Baptist and Jesus Himself.” Expositor's Greek Testament “...the servants represent the aggregate work of the prophets up to the time of the Baptist.” Ellicott “The servants here are John the Baptist, the twelve apostles, the seventy, who first preached the gospel to the Jewish people.” Pulpit Commentary “...representing all preachers of the Gospel.” Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary   Verse 8 will use the word tote, then, after the burning of the city. Therefore, the wedding finally takes place after the destruction of Jerusalem. As this is the time for the wedding invitation, it could include John the Baptist, even if he was not to be a part of it. However, this even seems unlikely. The parable looks to the post-resurrection time of Israel's interaction with God's offer of Jesus.   The main substance being referred to, therefore, concerns those who were believers in Jesus, meaning the disciples and apostles. This is seen in the next words, “to call those having been called to the nuptials.”   There is a play on words, twice repeating the same word, kaleó. The use of the perfect participle in the second instance refers to a group that had been called in the past, with the call still in effect in the present. As such, it refers to Israel, the nation –   “You must hear unto Me, Jacob, and Israel, My ‘being called', I – He, I – First, indeed I, Afterwards.” Isaiah 48:12 (CG)   Israel was called to be the Lord's people through the time of the law. They were the “being called.” When the time came for the law to end and the new dispensation of grace to be ushered in, they were the “having been called.” However, at that time, Jesus says of them, “And not they inclined to come.”   The nation, as a whole and particularly as represented by its leaders, was uninterested in what Jesus offered. They wanted the old ways of law, seeing that it allowed them a privilege that no one else was entitled to.   Life application: Once, while reading a devotional from a reformed theology source that accepted the doctrine of preterism, it essentially said that at some point, the author believed that a new approach to various aspects of Scripture would come along and be so incredible to those who read it, they would not be able to accept the teaching, even though it would be correct.   He felt confident that biblical interpretation, as it was at the time, left various points incomplete. Think that one through. A person who believes Bible prophecy is fulfilled in its entirety, except for the second coming of Christ, understands that there was a gap in his understanding of Scripture.   A person who believes the church has replaced Israel knew there was something incomplete in regard to his view of biblical interpretation. The sad part of his analysis was that he was right. His view of biblical interpretation and his understanding of Scripture were deficient. He was also correct that a view would be proposed that would answer his deficiencies, and it would be rejected by many who heard it.   He was wrong, however, that it would come at some point in the future. It had already arrived in the form of dispensationalism. That developed until it was complete. It now answers the innumerable inaccuracies of views by scholars stuck in the reform ideas of preterism, “spiritual Israel,” etc.   Sometimes, we can be so sure something is wrong that we reject it outright, even when we know that what we currently believe may have serious deficiencies. To understand the Bible, dispensationalism is a must. But it was not really introduced by “early proponents” like John Darby. Rather, it stems from the writings of Paul, as inspired by the Holy Spirit.   Check things out. Compare them to the word. And be sure to make sure that what you believe conforms to the word. If it doesn't, be sure to keep searching. Don't just sit fat, dumb, and happy in a church that does not adequately resolve the difficulties that are found in Scripture if they have already been resolved elsewhere.   Lord God, lead us to proper instruction in Your word. If there is a deficiency in the teaching we receive, help us to be alerted to this and to seek out an answer that will adequately satisfy the need. May we be properly schooled in Your word as we seek to honor You. Amen.

Wednesday, 29 July 2026   Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. Matthew 21:36   “Again, he sent other servants, ‘greater, the first', and they did to them as thus.” (CG)   In the previous verse, Jesus referred to the treatment of the servants sent to the vinedressers. They were scourged, killed, and stoned. Jesus continues the thought, “Again, he sent other servants, ‘greater, the first'.”   Two words should be considered. The first is allos, other. It refers to another of the same kind. These servants are in the same category as those who were previously sent. If they were in a different category, the Greek word heteros would have been used.   The second word is pleión. It signifies a comparative, such as greater in number, greater in quality, more abundant, etc. It is used in the greater-than-quality sense in Matthew, such as righteousness greater than the scribes and Pharisees is needed to enter the kingdom of the heavens (Matthew 5:20). It is used this way when making a comparison to Jonah (Matthew 12:41) and Solomon (Matthew 12:42). Jesus is greater than them.   What seems likely is that if Jesus is making a comparison, it would be to the pre-exilic and post-exilic prophets. The post-exilic prophets would be “greater” than the pre-exilic prophets because they had greater revelation, for example, in having the word of the previous prophets fulfilled.   As such, they stood in a greater position of knowing the reliability of the word of God, both in judgment and in mercy. There is no reason to assume there were only “more” servants sent either to the vinedressers in the parable or to the prophets after the exile. A good example of this is found in Numbers 22:15 –   “And he added yet, Balak, sending commanders greater and being enweighed from these.” (CG).   This “greater than” is certainly seen in the final prophet of the Old Testament –   “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” Matthew 11:11   In that verse, a different word, megas, signifying greater, is used, providing extra weight to this idea. Israel had been exiled. They should have known better, and yet, even after the exile, the maltreatment continued, as Jesus indicates, “and they did to them as thus.” This is explicitly recorded in Matthew 17:11-13 –   “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. 12 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.' 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.”   This, therefore, is the likely meaning of Jesus' words here. The Bible does not explicitly focus on the maltreatment of the post-exilic prophets outside of John, but Jesus' words are certainly inclusive of him.   Life application: The Old Testament records maltreatment of the prophets at various times. In Jeremiah 26, the prophet Urijah escaped from King Jehoiakim but was captured, brought back, and put to the sword. The priests of the Lord, including Ahimelech, who inquired of the Lord for David, were put to the sword by Saul through the hand of Doeg.   The Spirit of God came upon Zechariah in 2 Chronicles 24, prophesying to the people who rejected His word. King Joash had Zechariah stoned to death. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah exclaimed to the Lord that the children of Israel had “killed Your prophets with the sword.”   These and other such examples show that the words of Jesus are fulfilled just as the parable proclaims. Despite this overwhelming evidence recorded in Scripture, the Expositor's Greek Testament unfathomably says –   “The husbandmen treat the messengers in the most barbarous and truculent manner: beating, killing, stoning to death; highly improbable in the natural sphere, but another instance in which parables have to violate natural probability in order to describe truly men's conduct in the spiritual sphere.”   How can it be “highly improbable in the natural sphere” if the Bible explicitly records it is so, including in Jesus' words of the previous verse? These, along with verse 37, are explicit references to the ill treatment of the Lord's people.   Understanding this, be careful not to just accept “scholarly” comments as if they are correct and reliable. Jesus' parables do not “violate natural probability.” Rather, they are given to reveal exactly what has been going on, or what will occur. They are a unique and marvelous way of conveying information that is reliable and targeted.   Lord God, may we never dismiss what is recorded in Your word as unreliable, questionable, or fanciful. Rather, Your word stands as a witness to what You are doing in the world. Thank You for the sure and reliable word You have given us. Amen.

In today's episode, I am speaking with James "Jim" Nogalski and Mark Biddle about their book Murder in the Tidwell Building. This is a rare treat for us as one of our very own Baylor Religion professors has written a crime novel set in the Religion Department's building. A skeleton is found in 2020 in Waco, Texas, on the campus ofBaylor University during the renovation of the Tidwell Bible Building, which houses Baylor's Department of Religion. During demolition, workers uncover the skeleton of a man who had been murdered fifteen years earlier. Suspicionquickly falls on three members of the Department of Religion, including two who are now high-level administrators of the university. All three have something to hide. Two detectives meticulously and creatively pursue the killer, despite encountering bureaucratic resistance from the higher echelons of administrators in the Waco Police Department and Baylor University.Jim Nogalski joined the faculty of the Religion Departmentat Baylor in the fall of 2007 after teaching at institutions in South Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, and North Carolina. Nogalski is best known for his ongoing work in prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible, and especially in the Book of the Twelve (Hosea through Malachi). Nogalski grew up in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. After graduating Samford University he completed a Master of Divinity degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentuckybefore completing a Master of Theology in Old Testament at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Rüschlikon (a suburb of Zurich), and his doctoral degree at the University of Zurich. He publishes regularly on prophetic literature, especially the Book of the Twelve. Dr. Biddle received his early education in the publicschools of Orlando, FL and Ft. Payne, AL. He holds a BAH from Samford University (Birmingham, AL), an MDiv from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY), a ThM from Rueschlikon Baptist Theological Seminary (Rueschlikon, Switzerland), and a DrTheol from the University of Zurich(Zurich, Switzerland). Dr. Biddle began his teaching career at Carson Newman College (now University), where he also directed the Honors Program. After almost a decade, he joined the faculty of the Baptist Theological Seminary atRichmond as Professor of Old Testament, soon to become the Russell T. Cherry Professor there and to continue until the unfortunate closing of the school.Along the way, Biddle has taught adjunctively for SBTS, the Polish Baptist Theological Seminary in Warsaw-Radosc, and, currently, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond.Dr. Biddle has published seven books, over forty articles, eleven translated volumes (from German to English), and scores of book reviews. He serves on the editorial board ofthe Review & Expositor, having served for two years as Associate Editor and seven as Managing Editor. He also serves on the editorial board of the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary and is General Editor of the Reading the Old Testament series. He served for five years on the advisory board of Interpretation and as Issue Editor for R&E's volumes on “Genesis,” “Song of Songs,” “Apocalyptic Literature,”“Transitions,”and “Esther” (forthcoming).  

Tuesday, 17 March 2026   and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3   “And He said, ‘Amen! I say to you, if not you should turn, and you should become as the children, no, not you should enter into the kingdom of the heavens'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus called a child to Him and set him in the midst of the disciples. Matthew continues with Jesus' object lesson as He provides why the child was presented as he was. Matthew records, “And He said, ‘Amen!'”   The sense here is, “Pay attention! This is a truth that you must understand and accept as I speak it.” Understanding this, He continues with, “I say to you, if not you should turn.”   The meaning is that they are on a path of thinking one way, and they must turn and think completely differently. The path they were on is one of “who is the greatest?” It reflects a self-serving attitude that is incompatible with the humility necessary to accept God's proposition for salvation in Christ. Jesus continues, saying, “and you should become as the children.”   The turning is from adamant assertion to innocent acceptance. Jesus is speaking about the kingdom. There are various meanings of what ‘kingdom' signifies, but this one is clearly about the offering that is made by God in Christ based on Jesus' ministry.   Though that is not yet ready to be offered, and though the disciples have no idea what it entails at this point, Jesus is speaking about how to obtain salvation and entry into what God is doing in redemptive history, of which Jesus is the key.   Children are little people. People do wrong. When a child is presented with his wrongdoing and told how to correct it, the child will accept what he is told. This is because children have not yet processed the world around them enough to form their own ideas about such things.   Therefore, he will believe what he is told by simple faith. Until a child learns when people are lying or kidding, they take what they hear at face value. God, who never lies, is to be taken at face value. This is the point of Jesus' words.   There is no feeling of superiority or earning what is necessary for restoration. There is the innocence of acceptance. Along with that, there is no thought by the child of how great he is or how he can earn exaltation in mommy's eyes. There is just the simple desire for restoration. With that in mind, Jesus continues with, “no, not you should enter into the kingdom of the heavens.”   The double negative is an adamant assertion that follows emphatically after the “Amen” previously stated. This is exactly what Paul writes about in Galatians 5 –   “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” Galatians 5:1-4   How does that match what Jesus says, you ask? Because when one rejects Christ's fulfillment of the law, he rejects Christ's cross. But the cross is the only thing that can cleanse someone from sin. The law only magnifies guilt before God.   The gospel asks a person to become like a child. The cross demands that a person acknowledge he has sinned (Christ died for your sins, implying you are a sinner), and to accept the avenue God has set forth for restoration. There is no need for a cross for someone who has not sinned.    God has set forth what brings restoration. When we, like children, accept what He has done, it is an acknowledgment that what God has done is sufficient. The simple faith of a child is what God expects.   Life application: Some scholarly comments on this verse show the inability of people to understand what Jesus is saying –   “What was needed was that they should ‘turn' from their self-seeking ambition, and regain, in this respect, the relative blamelessness of children.” Ellicott. It is true that there is a need for turning from self-seeking ambition, but children are not blameless. When we come to the cross, we do not make ourselves blameless. We come to the cross to be made blameless through Christ's imputation of His sinlessness.   “...and become like little children — ‘Free from pride, covetousness, and ambition, and resemble them in humility, sincerity, docility, and disengagement of affection from the things of the present life, which excite the ambition of grown men.'” Benson. If Benson is saying that we need to do these things to merit the kingdom, he is completely missing the point. We come to God acknowledging that we are these things, we have offended Him because it is so, and ask to be forgiven in Christ. From there, we can then conform our lives to His expectations. The cart of works must come after the horse of acknowledgment of sin at the cross.   “How many who pass for converted, regenerate persons have need to be converted over again, more radically.” Expositor's Greek Testament. Are they talking about entering the kingdom after salvation? If so, then they have missed the mark. Salvation is a one-time for all-time proposition. It is true we need to live properly after salvation, but there is no “re-meriting” salvation after it has been granted.   “There is no question here about what is popularly known as conversion - the change from habitual sin to holiness.” Pulpit Commentary. Without explaining how this happens, the words are insufficient and appear to claim we must “fix ourselves.” This is completely incorrect. We come to Jesus as we are with all our baggage, acknowledge we are sinners, and believe He forgives us. Only then do we make an effort to go from “habitual sin to holiness.” If we were to do that first, we would not be like children. We would be “meriting” our salvation.   “The phrase, ‘Except ye be converted,' does not imply, of necessity, that they were not Christians before, or had not been born again. It means that their opinions and feelings about the kingdom of the Messiah must be changed. They had supposed that he was to be a temporal prince. They expected he would reign as other kings did. They supposed he would have his great officers of state, as other monarchs had, and they were ambitiously inquiring who should hold the highest offices. Jesus told them that they were wrong in their views and expectations. No such things would take place. From these notions they must be turned, changed or converted, or they could have no part in his kingdom. These ideas did not fit at all the nature of his kingdom.” Barnes. Barnes, what are you talking about? Jesus is referring to entering the kingdom of the heavens. If you are born again, you have entered it. The commentary has so overcomplicated what Jesus is saying that there is no hope of reconciling it with coming to Christ for forgiveness, the very thing that will allow the disciples, and indeed all people, to enter.   Life application lesson: Keep the salvation message simple. You have sinned. You need Jesus. Believe the gospel. Don't try to fix yourself. You can't. Jesus, we need Jesus to fix us. Believe the gospel.   Lord God, help us to never complicate grace. It is Your offering. If we have to earn it, it is not grace. Help us not to mar the gospel. You have done the work through Jesus. There is nothing we can add to it. Help us to learn these simple, fundamental, and eternity-changing truths. Amen.
