Fr. Doug Martin grew up in a Godly United Methodist family, but didn't start taking a call to ministry seriously until college, where exposure to various Christian traditions led him to research Church history. At that time, he became Episcopalian, and eventually was ordained an Episcopal priest. After realizing the need for a stronger way of understanding of Christian authority, he gravitated toward the Catholic Church, entering itin 2001 as a layman. Several years later, he revisited the idea of his call to ministry, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 2019.
Ian Morgan Cron is a bestselling author, speaker, trained psychotherapist, songwriter, and Episcopal priest, but he may be best known for popularizing the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a personality typing system identifying nine types of people and how they relate to one another and the world. His popular Enneagram primer, The Road Back to You gave fresh language and interest in this uncannily accurate tool. His latest book, The Story of You, helps readers go a step further, using Enneagram wisdom to uncover and rewrite their own false narratives so they can live more fully. “Gathering of the Manna,” James Tissot (1896-1902), The Jewish Museum, New York City I just finished the best class at Duke Divinity, “Old Testament and Leadership” taught by Dr. Ellen Davis and Dr. Sarah Musser. In addition to challenging readings and wonderful guest speakers, I realized that most of my religious life had been spent learning about the New Testament even though it is only 25% of the whole Bible and has about 5,000 words compared to 12,000. In our last class session we were sharing how our coursework in the Old Testament may have transformed our way of thinking, or how it might change our ministry in the future. All of the twenty students had poignant comments, but one from an Episcopal Priest, Rev. Emily Rowell has stuck with me for these past weeks. The intense study of the Old Testament had resonated with her about how we should talk about sufficiency rather than abundance. I started thinking how it would change my life if I started thinking more about having enough rather than having more. “Abundance” originated in 14th century France with the stem of abundans meaning overflowing, or full. Those terms seem different to me. If I have a cup of coffee that is “full”, it is up to the top of the rim, but if it is “overflowing”, it burns my hand when I try to pick it up to drink. I would like to think that I lead my life to “fullness” by having enough, but not more than I need. At the very least, anything that I possess to excess, I should consider sharing with those who have less. During the pandemic, I didn't want to be in crowds and was avoiding stores. I found myself ordering a case of dish soap from Amazon or Costco. Living alone meant that many items I ordered lasted more than a year. I still can't pass up a sale on 72 rolls of toilet paper. The pandemic has subsided, and the supply chain seems more reliable, but I still haven't shaken this idea that I need more of everything. My pantry is full and even the dogs have more toys than they can play with in a month. This Advent season, I'm going to be studying the Old Testament and dwelling with the Israelites when they were wandering in the wilderness. God told them that he would supply enough “manna” for them each day, except on the sixth day when he would double their supply (so they could enjoy a Sabbath rest). If they gathered more than they needed for a single day, it became “wormy and rotten” (Exodus 16). I want to gather only exactly what I need for sufficiency, knowing that any overabundance will become rotten in the eyes of the Lord. Blessings, my friend, Agatha

Cherri Rodriguez, Andy Houltberg and Richard Haynes join me to form an Enneagram Nine panel. Our conversation proves quite engaging for four Nines!!! Our panelists discuss the harmonizing energy of the Nine structure that continuously operates at the gut level. While Enneagram Nines appear calm and peaceful on the outside, there is a lot of churning and angst going on beneath the surface. Enneagram 9s are unpretentious and empathetic. Known as peacemakers and mediators, Nines sit at the top of the Enneagram circle and "see" all other eight perspectives. They find themselves unconsciously merging into others' agenda. As Cherri brilliantly states, the task of the Enneagram 9 is to take a front seat in their own life. The panelists share several practical strategies for Nines to be more present and accounted for. Cherri is a nonprofit fundraising coach. Her website is www.fruitfulfundraising.co. Find her on Facebook at Fruitful Fundraising Co and on Instagram @fruitfulfundraisingco. Richard is a coach and owns Empower Potential Coaching. Find him at www.empowerpotentialcoaching.com, and on LinkedIn. He hosts the Fill Up Podcast. Whoa. Near Death Experiences is new territory for our podcast, and what a cool conversation this was. Host Matt Mattson shares a sacred conversation with Rev. Stephanie Chase Bradbury about the moments when people seem to transcend beyond our earthly realm and live to tell about it. The Reverend Stephanie Chase Bradbury is a graduate of Yale Divinity School, ordained an Episcopal Priest for 28 years, and serves a congregation in Massachusetts. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She is drawn to the thin shimmer between matter and spirit, and how life in this world is affected by our connection to the next. She believes that every human being, every part of the cosmos, is profoundly precious to God. No exceptions. To that end she has a newsletter entitled “Jesus and the Enchanted Cosmos.” She also founded and hosts two support groups for Christians who have had Near-Death and other Transcendent Experiences, and regularly speaks at the conferences of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. In 2022 she published a book of sermons entitled, “Holy Incarnation! God Said What?” While grounded in the Christian tradition, Stephanie looks for truth beyond as well. Rev. Abortion is one of the most passionate, divisive, and emotional issues in the 2024 election campaign. The debate is often dominated by extremes on both sides. But what if passionate pro-life and pro-choice movement leaders could get together in the same room and learn how to disagree better? That is exactly what happened in Massachusetts, beginning in the mid 1990's. Leaders on both sides held secret discussions over the course of several years . These wrenching conversations began in the mid 1990's at a very difficult time— after two women were murdered by an anti-abortion extremist in Brookline, Massachusetts. We hear from The Reverend Anne Fowler, an Episcopal Priest who served on the board of directors for the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and lawyer Fran Hogan, who's been President of Women Affirming Life. They're among the six women profiled in the 2023 documentary, "The Abortion Talks". Despite not being as well known as other leaders of his time, Absalom Jones' legacy is still felt today.Born into slavery in 18th-century Delaware at a time when slavery was being debated as immoral and undemocratic, Jones would go on to become America's first Black Episcopal priest and founder of both the first Black Episcopal congregation and the first ‘Free African Society.'In this edition of History Matters, Delaware Public Media's Kyle McKinnon sits down with Philadelphia-based writer and educator Amy Jane Cohen for a closer look at Jones' life and lasting influence ahead of Juneteenth.

On today's episode, Ashley unpacks the term "sexual confusion" and offers up a more positive way of understanding mystery in sex and romance using Episcopal Priest, Carter Heyward's book "Touching Our Strength: The Erotic as Power and the Love of God." Instead of being ashamed of what we don't understand, instead of being frustrated we ought to embrace the lack of clarity, embrace the mystery and the unknowing. Because It is in embracing what is concealed, being open to what we don't understand or cant explain that we begin to open ourselves up to the work of God. Question: Given the chaos in Haiti, is a Haitian-Led Solution Possible? If it is, will it succeed? Recently, Renaldo McKenzie, Creator and Host of The NeoLiberal Round Podcast and YouTube Channel, and Senior Editor of The NeoLiberal Journals interviewed Fr. Hyvenson Josephs, a Haitian American, scholar, Episcopal Priest and Professor to discuss the latest situation in Haiti. The interview was revealing and breaking providing commentary and new details about the situation in Haiti. 1. Dr. Ariel Henry is now in Puerto Rico after being denied entry into the Dominica Republic enroute to Haiti. Dr. Ariel the Installed Prime Minister of Haiti, who is currently exile from the country, was in Nairobi Kenya signing a Treaty to allow for bilateral relations between the two countries. The treaty was needed to satisfy Kenya's courts over ruling and objecting to the request for Kenya to send a peace keeping force to Haiti. The treaty was signed and as such would provide the greenlight allowing Kenya to send the force. However, it is not clear as to whether the treaty was legal and constitutional as Dr. Ariel Henry's authority to sign such a treaty violates Haitian law and constitution since he was installed and not elected and not the President of Haiti. Moreover, Dr. Ariel Henry was asked not to return to Haiti by the gangs and the police who are closely monitoring the ports of entry for Henry's arrival. It is interesting to point out that the police and gangs are not working together, yet, they both have taken over the airports and oppose to the return of Dr. Henry. 2. Dr. Ariel Henry was asked to step down by the US Department of State and is set to travel to Jamaica where he will announce his resignation. What is perplexing is that while in power, Ariel was unpopular among majority of the Haitian peoples who have asked him to step down. yet he held onto power for a long time since his installment by the gang of 4 including France, Canada, US, and to a lesser degree UK and Brazil. It was not until foreigners asked him to resign that he relented, but refused the protestations of his own people. This suggests that even Ariel rejected Haiti's own independence, sovereignty and democracy, appealing to the external rather than the internal. 3. CARICOM heads are meeting with a select group of Haitian ministers to discuss a way forward. 4. Haiti is still in a State-of-Emergency as over 98 % of prisoners, from three of the major prisons representing over 80% of all prisoners, remain at large with no solution in sight. It is not clear if the criminals will make their way to other countries given the millions of migrants who are crossing various borders in the Americas today. Question: given the chaos, is a Haitian-led solution possible and if it is will it succeed? Listen or watch the full episode interview on #theneoliberalround podcast and YouTube Channel. Women Who Knew Jesus by Rev. Dr. Bonnie RingAs you come to know each of the women that Jesus knew, you may be surprised to discover how quickly your own stories are evoked by hearing theirs and how similar you are to some of them so they become role models for your own journey of faith and witness. In each of these encounters, you will meet Jesus and come to know him as they did, perhaps for the first time.To enrich your experience, there are questions to ponder and memories of your own to recover. These Bible stories help us see parts of ourselves, both the parts we like and the parts we would prefer to deny, hide, or eliminate. As you proceed, two attitudes will be helpful: a willingness to let these biblical women speak with their own voices and an openness to hearing what you may not have heard before. These stories can help us uncover the richness of our own stories and see them for the sacred wonder that they are.Rev. Dr. Bonnie Ring has devoted her life to living out God's all-inclusive love through psychotherapeutic care and experiential educational programs for adults that lead to personal growth and build community.Educated at Vassar College and New York University, Bonnie completed Masters' and Doctoral degrees in Adult Education from Boston University, with additional graduate study ad UCLA in Applied Behavioral Sciences and UCSF in Human Sexuality. She received a Masters' in Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Bonnie has culminated her career with the publication of Women Who Knew Jesus, the subject of retreats she has led for 25 years. In her poignant descriptions of all the women who encountered Jesus, Bonnie brings the wisdom and understanding she has acquired from more than 45 years as a Licensed Psychologist, 31 years as a Spiritual Director and Retreat Leader, and 27 years as an Episcopal Priest. What my faith needed to be about was figuring out what Jesus would do and doing it.Devin: What's your superpower, Leroy?Leroy: I've been a person who can look out and do something and bring people together to do something scary.Rosa Lee Harden and her husband and business partner, Kevin Doyle Jones, founded Neighborhood Economics as a community-focused version of the highly successful SoCap event series they created.“Back in 2008, my husband, Kevin Jones, and a bunch of us started this organization called SoCap,” Rosa Lee said. “We decided after about a decade that we wanted to go more downstream, if you will, and start working with economics in a way that could change neighborhoods for good.”The next Neighborhood Economics event is in San Antonio, Texas, on February 26 - 28, 2024. The event will feature about 70 speakers in 42 sessions over the three days.Leroy Barber, the executive director of Neighborhood Economics, joined us for this conversation. He says the enterprise brings together the world of impact investing and social entrepreneurship with his traditional focus on community development and church work. The connection to faith is more overt than implied, as it was at SoCap, recognizing faith leaders' and organizations' roles in repairing local economies. “We are mostly Christians in our organization, but we believe that faith writ large, not just Christianity, is the glue that holds the moral compass of the economy together,” Rosa Lee said. “It's important for people of faith to be in conversation with the economy.”A vital element of the event is bringing about a dozen foundations together to talk about patient capital's role in local community investing.Rosa Lee and Leroy both bring their superpowers to work. Rosa Lee's early conviction to do what Jesus would and Leroy's ability to get people together to complete scary community projects enable them to impact communities through their events.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe introduces Rosa Lee Harden, founder of Neighborhood Economics, and her colleague Leroy Barber as his guests on the "Superpowers for Good" show.2. Rosa Lee talks about starting SoCap in 2008, focusing on global impact investing, and later creating Neighborhood Economics with a more local approach to building economic justice in neighborhoods through ideas and community collaboration.3. Neighborhood Economics hosts events that bring together around 300 people to discuss actionable ways of making positive changes in local communities with input from national experts.4. Leroy Barber joined the initiative after being invited to SoCap, realizing the potential connections between social entrepreneurship, impact investing, and local community development.5. Rosa Lee highlights the purpose of Neighborhood Economics as a platform for facilitating discussions that SoCap couldn't cater to, such as impact investing for specific local contexts, and emphasizes the role of faith as a moral compass in economy-related conversations.6. Leroy explains the importance of the faith community as a mobilizer for local economic efforts, fostering a merge between the financial world and faith-directed community action.7. Rosa Lee shares details about an upcoming event in San Antonio, Texas, providing a platform for discussing various topics like reversing redlining, equitable homeownership, and employee-owned business models, alongside sessions about the role of faith in economic justice.8. Rosa Lee considers one of her superpowers to be her ability to see through superficial religious motivations and focus on living out her faith through actions that reflect a divine dream for the world, as well as her exceptional capability to organize large events without stress.9. Leroy identifies his superpower as the ability to bring people together to undertake challenging and transformative community work, fostering relationships and building unlikely alliances.10. Rosa Lee invites viewers to the Neighborhood Economics event and provides contact information for both her and Leroy—Rosa Lee at rosalee@neighborhoodeconomics.org and Leroy at leroy@neighborhoodeconomics.org—for anyone interested in connecting or learning more about their work.To help others learn about Neighborhood Economics, share this post. How to Develop Doing As Jesus Would As a SuperpowerSoCap is the living manifestation of the power of Rosa Lee's influence. Her faith led her to keep the balance at the events on impact, so the focus didn't shift entirely to making money.“The idea that was emerging in the early 2000s, that you could invest for profit in mission-based businesses, that businesses should have a mission and that they should be doing good, and that you could follow your money through that path has proved to be true,” she says. In those early days of SoCap, her influence helped to maintain the balance.By following Rosa Lee's example, you can increase your ability to apply principles of your faith in contexts outside of worship services. With practice, this could become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. How to Develop Completing Scary Community Projects As a SuperpowerLeroy explains his superpower:My superpower is to convince people on the margins in local neighborhoods who've been underneath it for so long and are not resourced that this is possible. [Impact investors and social entrepreneurs] exist, and you can come meet them. We're going to pull all of y'all together, right? And something powerful can and will keep happening. I love the idea of that because people don't believe that that's there. My superpower is convincing people it's there.By following Leroy's example, you can make bringing people together to tackle scary problems something that you can do, too. With practice, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileAbout Neighborhood Economics: Neighborhood Economics convenes, recruits, and connects people repairing local economies. Aleem Maqbool meets Richard Butler, who describes a new-found connection with Jesus during an Ayahuasca retreat in Mexico, after discovering spirituality through meditation. Some psychedelic drugs, like the plant-based DMT found in the ayahuasca drink, have been the subject of medical trials for their help with mental health conditions such as depression, with some successful results. But alongside their medical potential is, for some, a connection between their use and spirituality. To discuss what might be going on, the potential and the dangers of the so-called psychedelic renaissance, Aleem is joined by a fascinating panel. Rev Rita Powell is an Episcopal Priest who has taken magic mushrooms as part of a University trial in the US, Dr Ben Sessa is a psychiatrist involved in psychedelic research here in the UK and Dr David Luke, Associate Professor at the University of Greenwich, explores spirituality, psychedelics and ‘exceptional human experiences' in his work.Opening Music: Ayahuasca Icaros - Medicine (Cures For All) Producer: Rebecca Maxted Assistant Producer: James Leesley

Lutheran Service Book 361 1 O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. 2 For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the king And peace to all the earth! 3 How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav'n. No ear may hear His coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him, still The dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel! Stuart's Bio I began my cure as rector of Grace in early January 2014, after serving as Senior Associate at St. Benedict's in Smyrna, Georgia, for over five years. Working with the entire leadership team at Grace, I have a particular passion for the intersection of contemplative practices and congregational development. Grace is an extraordinary community of nearly one thousand souls, and I feel blessed to live and pray among them as we prepare to celebrate our Bicentennial in 2028. I also serve as Assistant Professor in the Practice of Spiritual Formation and Ministry at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. At Candler, I focus on the contextual education of the Episcopal and Anglican seminarians, exploring the dynamics of congregational life in a “laboratory of spiritual imagination.” Candler School of Theology Anglican/Episcopal Studies Program My broader work as a priest, teacher, retreat leader, and author is grounded in the Christian contemplative tradition. I continue to share in ongoing conversations with friends from the New Contemplative Exchange, a fellowship first gathered by Thomas Keating, Richard Rohr, Tilden Edwards, and Laurence Freeman at St. Benedict's Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado in August 2017. Since that time, I contributed to and co-edited the volume Contemplation and Community: A Gathering of Fresh Voices for a Living Tradition (Crossroad, 2019) and am the author of The Heart of a Calling: The Practice of Christian Mindfulness in Congregational Ministry (Crossroad, 2021). Before “church life,” I studied in the pre-med program at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas (B.S. in Biology, summa cum laude), and I did my initial theological studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia (M.Div, honors in spiritual formation). I also completed a certificate in Anglican Studies and the Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee. With the global contemplative community, I have worked with the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, the World Community for Christian Meditation, Contemplative Outreach, the Candler School of Theology, Mepkin Abbey, and others. As well, I continue my practice and research into the connections between the Christian contemplative tradition and the Tibetan/Himalayan Buddhism, and I have a deep appreciation for the intersection of poetry and contemplative practice. My wife, Lisa, and I have one daughter, Evelyn. Duncan Gray is a retired Episcopal Priest and was the 9th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi. I met him at St. Peter's Episcopal church in Oxford, Mississippi, where he was rector, like his father before him. His father served from 1957 to 1965 during the turbulent era when James Meredith was the first Black man who was allowed admission into the University of Mississippi.St. Peter's organized itself in 1851. The church building was completed just prior to the Civil War in 1860. Its first service was just prior to Mississippi's secession and, according to Duncan, “has a history of being an enlightened community in some pretty difficult times in Mississippi.”

Today we will be hearing the experience, strength, and hope of Father Bill W, who was celebrating his 47th anniversary of sobriety being a guest on this show (He will celebrate 50 years later in December of this year). He shares his own experience, faith and hope and focusing mostly on Step 6. In this Journey In Recovery, we reflect back on the early history of AA and the practices of Two Way Prayer and the 4 Absolutes and how that applies to Step 6 and other steps of recovery.Back in 2019 I was hosting another podcast called Journey Through Life, it was a long-form conversation/interview style podcast. It was not recovery related, although I was actively working my recovery. Duriing this time, I felt compelled by my Higher Power to do a series on the Journey Through Life podcast called Journey in Recovery. In this series, I interviewed 16 people over a 3 month period on each of the 12 Steps of Recovery. It was during this 3 month period that my own recovery walk was radically changed and my vision of what the Steps can do for anyone, anywhere, from any background was drastically opened up. It was after this series, that the idea of the Reco12 Speaker Meeting Podcast came to be. It was in this series that I realized just how powerful the Steps of Recovery are. It was in this series that my Higher Power opened up huge new ideas to me. The concept of firing my old concept of lower case g god and hiring a new Capital G God and the practice of Two Way Prayer are just two of the major game-changers that came to me in during that time and that continue to shape and re-shape my walk with God and with my fellows. She studied theater history and sang in a band before pursuing post-grad HR and Business from the University of Minnesota. Molly is now a leading industry veteran with 20 years of experience, serving as CHRO of Adolfson & Peterson Construction. From a young age, Molly learned that work should contribute to the world in a way that is tangible. Years later, Molly followed a call to become an ordained Episcopal Priest—a journey supported by her colleagues and leaders at the time—which shaped her to become a leader with renewed depth of understanding and empathy. Molly teaches us there's power in saying, “I don't know” and asking for help. “Long ago I got over the need to be the smartest person in the room,” says Molly. “In fact, I would prefer it if I weren't. Because that means that everybody around me has so much richness to bring to the table."Connect with Molly Connect with Versique

Rev. Charles Martin "Marty" Davis was born in Cleveland, TN on Feb. 22, 1962. He graduated from Cleveland High School in '80 and went on to UTC for undergrad, then to UVA for his Masters. Soon after graduating, Marty felt a new calling and decided to go to Seminary at Sewanee for his Masters in Divinity, becoming an Episcopalian Priest. At the time Marty was ordained, he was the youngest in the state at the age of 29 years old and the first openly gay Episcopal Priest in the Chattanooga area. Marty went on to do amazing things for the St. Elmo community in Chattanooga, even played a massive role in the merging of two segregated churches and there is so much more he would have accomplished, if his life wasn't cut short. There are thousands of pieces to this case and theories as to what happened to Marty Davis - circulating churches, people of power, and individuals that live in the area. We are the first to cover Marty's case since 2007, there is very little out there on his murder. But we're going to change that. Marty's case is currently being handled by the Hamilton County DA's Office Cold Case Unit, which is weeks away from being shut down because of the changing of office. Once Marty's case is back in the hands of Chattanooga Police Department, it will likely sit on a dusty shelf for another 25 years without pressing leads being sent in. MARTY DESERVES JUSTICE! Today we're so thrilled to welcome our new friend, Enneagram Expert, and Best-Selling Author, Ian Cron to the show! Ian is an Episcopal Priest, a trained Psychologist, and author of some of the most helpful books you can find on the Enneagram, including the best- seller, The Road Back to You. If you're looking for a good place to begin learning about the Enneagram, this is always a great place to start! Today we're talking with Ian about his latest book called The Story of You, using enneagram wisdom to rewrite the broken stories we tell ourselves about who we are! This interview was so rich, definitely one you'll want to listen to over & over again. There's an incredible 4 step process that Ian outlines for us today that would be so helpful to go through with your spouse or someone you love & trust, to really examine the story you're living in, see how it lines up with the truth, and rewrite a newer, truer story of who you really are. This conversation was so powerful, we cannot wait to dive in. So let's get to it. Listen in.
