In neuroscience research, very small details can make a big difference in the results and in the way they are interpreted. If research conditions aren't carefully optimized, studies can produce inconsistent or unreliable findings, and can stall research in specific fields for months, sometimes even years. By fine-tuning their research parameters, scientists can get clearer, more accurate insights into how the brain really works. In this grad student interview episode, we discuss why optimizing basic research parameters is important to understand the pathological mechanisms of stroke. Sophie Wolkoff is a recent graduate from the Centre for Neuroscience Studies at Queen's University , where she completed her master's degree. As a master's student, she studied under the supervision of Dr. David Andrew. Their research focused on "spreading depolarizations", which are a cellular phenomenon that occurs in the brain following strokes and other traumatic brain injuries. For her thesis in particular, Sophie conducted research on how temperature affects spreading depolarization, as well as how both of these factors can influence the preparation of rodent brain slices. Aside from her passion for neuroscience, she loves traveling, rock-climbing, and spending time with family and friends. The Mobile Home Owner Town Hall EpisodeToday our show is about mobile home parks. As the state representative for house district 20, I have several mobile home parks in my district. Mobile home owners face unique challenges: they own their home but must rent the land on which their home sits. Every year that rent goes up – yet the value of their home tends to go down. This can create a vicious cycle that can be incredibly difficult for a mobile home owner to break out of. This podcast episode today is an edited version of the Town Hall that I held on Zoom on March 14, 2024. The main guest is attorney Charles Ward of Alaska Legal Services. He answers questions specific to mobile home owners. I also included an excerpt of an interview that I did with my younger brother David Andrew. He owns several mobile home parks and speaks from that perspective. Finally, we hear from Demetria Veasy the assistant director of workforce services at the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. She discusses resources available through her Job Centers throughout the state which help folks achieve higher paying employment. To reach Alaska Legal Services, click here, or call Charles Ward at 907-373-3656 To reach the Department of Labor and Workforce Development Job Centers, click here, or call the Midtown Anchorage Job Center at 907-269-0088.To read "‘We are in dire need': Mobile home park residents urge Nevada lawmakers to stabilize rents," click here.To learn more about the the PBS documentary, "A Decent Home," click here.
In this series, we are following the biography of David, Israel's greatest king. A king who began his life as an obscure shepherd boy but became a warrior who brought rival nations to their knees. A king described as “a man after God's own heart.”, wrote worship songs that have been sung throughout the centuries. A king whose personal sins devastated not only his own family but God's chosen nation. In triumph and in tragedy, this earthly king points forward to a greater king to come. As we read of the courageous victories of King David, I pray that we will be filled with hope and faith in the victory King Jesus has won for us. As we reflect on the heart of a worshipper and leader, I pray that we will glean Godly wisdom from David's life and respond in worship of the King of all Kings. _______ Gateway Baptist Church meets across five locations in South-East Queensland and also online. We had the privilege of meeting our next guest, David Andrew, on a Thursday afternoon in Santa Fe. His apartment, located just off the main drag, still carried the sense of a recent transition. As we parked the van and began unloading our gear, the door to his apartment swung open, and there stood David, shirtless, waving us in with a casual declaration that he had just woken up. After getting settled, we took a moment to chat and even shared a morning cigarette.David hails from northern New York, a child of the countryside, born in '66. His early years were marked by the loss of his father, an MD, when he was just three. He recalls those formative memories – the juxtaposition of his father's death and his birthday – and the long darkness that followed. His mother eventually remarried, introducing a stepfather into David's life. Like many of us, David endured the routine of high school and college, a job in a tie that felt like his personal version of hell. The turning point came when he abandoned that life and headed west. His first job, washing dishes at the Grand Canyon resort, brought a sense of freedom that he hadn't experienced before. It was during his time at the Grand Canyon that David experienced his first taste of love – a love that was transient and left him feeling like he had fallen into a pit. As this chapter of his life came to a close, he made his way to Lubbock, Texas, where he spent over two decades building a life. He became deeply involved in the community theater scene, and those years shaped his identity, at least until he grew disillusioned with his job and the path he had been on. This pivotal moment in Lubbock marked the beginning of David's journey to Santa Fe, where he hoped to discover his next steps.David is a profoundly intriguing individual, and his complexity invites compassion. His interview is raw and unfiltered, peppered with strong language and directness – a genuine conversation with a real person. In 2005, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a factor that has influenced his life's trajectory. During our conversation, David shares a heartfelt plea to his daughter, asking for forgiveness for not being the best parent while grappling with his mental health struggles.Join us as we listen to David's story in his own words, a narrative that navigates through his highs and lows, triumphs and challenges, as he continues to forge his path within the pages of The Jar. In this episode we find ourselves at the “threshold” of our creative lives, and we have a choice to make. Will we stay within the boundaries of the familiar and comfortable that we know so well or will cross over into the Great Unknown, and embark wholeheartedly on the Creative Journey? What will we take with us and what will we leave behind? We also explore why this decision can be so hard, and what it means to find ourselves in the liminal space - when one thing has ended and the next has not yet begun.
