POPULARITY
This week on the program we feature the deep, soulful grooves of Yemen Blues. In 2010, singer & composer Ravid Kahalani founded the rare combination of world class musicians that is called Yemen Blues. The result of this amazing group is a powerful energy that mixes Yemenite, West African, Latin & Jazz influences and what Ravid likes to call “New Culture Music”. Their latest studio effort is called, Insaniya. They were on a US tour just a few weeks ago when we caught up with them at The Levitt Shell in midtown Memphis. Grammy nominated blues man, Guy Davis, will be with us to deliver an installment of the Blues Hall of Fame, an exploration of the lives of the pioneers and innovators enshrined in the Blues Hall of Fame, here in Memphis, TN, brought to you by the blues Foundation.
The Soundcheck Podcast series offers up music from recent sessions, all revolving around The Blues –at the root of so much popular music, and where the roots have grown into other fruits worldwide. Listen to French-Moroccan band Bab L' Bluz and their hot psychedelic blues spiked with the Gnawa trance rhythms of northern Africa's Maghreb. There's the “Desert Blues” of West Africa in music by singer and guitarist Mdou Moctar from Niger. He and his band combine rock and psychedelia, call-and-response and accelerating threes, and fiery guitar playing for trancey and ecstatic results. Listen to Texas-raised singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ruthie Foster and her longtime bandmates who play some of their feel-good and hopeful blues. Hear the timeless sound of West Georgia Blues by singer and guitarist Jontavious Willis (along with the wicked tunings and his slide playing), in-studio. Plus, there's the groove and swagger of Yemen Blues, and their fusion of Moroccan trance, Arab and Bedouin folk, and Western funk and rock. The American singer-songwriter Fantastic Negrito plays some of his blues-stomp-and-roll music with roots in his family's past. Plus, hear the vintage soul and blues-rock sound of Memphis and Mississippi-rooted, Brooklyn native singer Bette Smith. Yemen Blues is a band led by Israeli singer and songwriter Ravid Kahalani. For more than a decade now, the group has incorporated the sounds of Moroccan trance, Arab and Bedouin folk, and Western funk and rock into a high energy, groove-filled dance party. But behind that sound is a social conscience, and the band's latest album is pointedly called Only Love Remains. Yemen Blues plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Ma'Ahla Asalam. 2. Greatest Man /Prayers 3. - Voir le clip Ace of Spades feat. Adi Keissar, an Israeli poet of Yemenite descent, is the founder of the popular Ars Poetica, a project which initiated a new wave of Mizrahi poetry for the masses in the form of readings combined with Middle Eastern music and dancing. She is the editor of two Ars Poetica anthologies, and former editor of the Basta poetry section of the online journal Ha’okets. Her second collection of poetry, Loud Music, was published in 2016. Allison, Noah, and special guest Miriam Herschlag (Times of Israel Ops & Blogs Editor) discuss three topics of incomparable importance, and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Third Intifada? We discuss the waves of violence engulfing us, as stabbings follow shootings follow stonings, accompanied by violent demonstrations and mass arrests. What the hell is happening around us, and what, if anything, can make it stop? Kids and racism A study has found that almost two in five of teachers say they lack adequate teaching tools to combat racism among their students - our kids. Is racism common coin in our children’s economies and, if so, what should be done about it? The temptations of battle-tested testes New research has found that Israeli women shopping at sperm banks prefer soldiers' sperm, the more battle-tested the better. What is that about?
