The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance ended in 1824 with a series of massacres conducted by settlers in the Bathurst region. From the 1830s, colonists began occupying more and more Aboriginal land across western New South Wales and stocking it with sheep and cattle. By 1838, a dramatic fightback began across the entire frontier of the colony. What has been called the Second Wiradyuri War of Resistance, from 1839 to 1841, was, in fact, part of a vast arc of conflict from present-day northern Victoria through to southeast Queensland. At the time, it was seen by many contemporaries as a concerted and coordinated ‘uprising'.In Uprising, Stephen Gapps reveals the incredible story of this extensive frontier resistance warfare for the first time – a series of wars that were conducted along a huge area of the Murray-Darling river system, across many First Nations' lands, in a concerted defence of River Country. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Stephen Gapps about why we are yet to fully recognise that the colonisation of Australia was achieved through frontier wars, how wool was one of the prime economic drivers for the invasion, the extensive networks of communication that existed for First Nations across the colony of New South Wales and why memorials to this war should form part of our national remembrance.

I was there representing Milner Media Partners to write a news story for their radio stations, The Valley 92.7 FM and River Country 101.7 FM. After hearing Mayor Chris Curtis and Guest Speaker, Marcus Ellis, of Washington, D.C. talk about what needs to be done to combat violence in Kankakee, I thought maybe this would be a conversation you'd want to listen to.    Now, keep in mind the audio is a little subpar compared to what you're used to hearing on Kankakee Podcast. I showed up to this meeting with my iPhone and a note pad with the intent to only use the audio for radio news broadcasts. I decided after the fact that you might want to hear this conversation. None of the less, the audio is mostly audible.    If you want to learn more about Kankakee's Violence Prevention Program called, Kankakee United, go to https://ku.citykankakee-il.gov/.   Much Love, Jake LaMore   P.S. (Lander, WY) - Back in November, local musician and Northern Arapaho artist Christian Wallowing Bull stopped by KOVE's Coffee Time to talk about the music video shoot for his namesake song, “Wallowing Bull.” After finishing filming and wrapping up post production, the video now has a release date of Monday, January 9, and will debut on Vimeo. During a portion of the shoot, County 10 was able to speak with the filmmakers making the music video, Noam Sol Azouz and Dan Lior, both originally from Israel. Dan Lior, Christian Wallowing Bull, Noam Sol Azouz. h/t Vince Tropea Noam shared that while traveling across the country, she became inspired to shoot a documentary about the Fort Berthold Reservation in South Dakota. After having come across Wallowing Bull's music, Noam reached out and offered to direct a music video for him if she could use one of his songs for that project. Noam went on to tell County 10 that she has fallen in love fast with the Wind River country, a sentiment Lior shared as well. "There's a certain magic to this place," Lior commented. "We both deeply fell in love with this place." Lior, who now lives in the states, has had work showcased on HBO, the BBC, Men's Journal and much more. He stated that he works consistently with Noam and that they share an artistic point of view, with both co-shooting, co-directing and co-editing their current project. While exact details of the music video will be saved for its Monday release, Wallowing Bull and partner/fellow artist Fiadh Vincent shared some stories from the shoot, including when Christian had to stand in freezing cold waters at sunrise, and Vincent had to drive a truck at just the right speed for the directors filming from its bed to get said shot. Check out some photos from portions of the shoot in Lander below, and be on the lookout for the Monday music video release. #63: Tim Milner - Milner Media Partners

Kankakee Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2022 70:04

Milner Media Partners began all the way back in 1983. Tim Milner and his brother Tommy were attending a Sox game together in Chicago. Before going to the game, they stopped at a bar nearby the stadium. The bar was playing 99.9 FM. The two brothers had been trying to buy their own radio station for awhile and really loved what they heard on 99.9 FM. They went to the payphone at the bar and called the station to ask who the owner was. Tim and Tommy found out the station was in fact for sale and eventually purchased it for a million dollars with the aid of their parents, Gene and Jackie. When the Milners took control of the station, the call letters were changed to WBUS The Bus. It was a rock formatted station at the time. Unfortunately, in 1985, Tommy Milner died in a tragic car accident. After Tommy's death, the format changed to Top 40 and had tremendous success. The station had a very large regional signal that reached not only Kankakee but into Chicago and parts of Indiana. Around 1994, the Milner family decided to sell 99.9 FM. The market was hot and the price was right. In March of 1995, Milner purchased 95.1 FM and that's when WVLI The Valley was born. Tim had what he thought was a brilliant idea for a format: Greatest Hits, Greatest Artists. An oldies station essentially but, with a twist. Many thought that this format would not go over well. However, Tim proved them wrong. Here we are 27 years later and The Valley has become a staple for many in Kankakee County. It's the number one most listened to radio station in our area. Not only that, Milner Media is also the home of two other successful radio stations, River Country 101.7 FM and WFAV 95.1 FM. River Country is also broadcast on 103.7 FM and locally in the Bourbonnais area on 96.1 FM.    On a more personal note, I'd like to thank Tim Milner and the entire Milner Media family for everything they have done to support me and Kankakee Podcast. Without the Milner family, I don't think Kankakee Podcast would have happened. They didn't create the podcast directly or anything like that. They did however give me my first job in radio back in 2014 and drilled into my brain just how important it is to make a positive impact on your local community. When I first started working at Milner Media, I didn't think being involved with the community was as important as they made it out to be. However, overtime I began to learn the importance of community. Tim Milner, his family, and my co-workers at Milner Media taught me that. So when I say Kankakee Podcast probably wouldn't have happened without Milner Media, that's what I mean. I have a career and a future that I love thanks to the Milner Media family. I hope they know how grateful I am for that.    Learn more about Milner Media's radio stations below: https://wvli927.com/ https://wivr1017.com/ https://wfav951.com/     Much Love, Jake LaMore   P.S. Disney had a full fledged water park, one that lasted for 20+ years in fact. Don't remember it? Neither did we so in this episode we dive into the mystery of this water parks premature closure.

Rob West is one of the most trusted voices in Kankakee County when it comes to getting the most accurate and up-to-date local news. Rob is currently the News Director at Milner Media Partners in Bourbonnais, which is home to The Valley 92.7 FM, River Country 101.7 FM, 103.7 FM, and 96.1 FM, and WFAV 95.1 FM. However, long before his days at Milner, Rob built a name for himself working at WKAN reporting local news for several years. It was there they he learned from legendary Kankakee newsman, Ed Munday. Rob has seen a thing or two in his many years of radio broadcasting. This episode of Kankakee Podcast only covers a fraction of those stories. It's an honor to be able to call Rob a co-worker and friend.    You can hear Rob West weekday mornings on any of the Milner Media stations. I specifically suggest listening to Mike Tomano's Morning Show on The Valley 92.7 FM weekday mornings from 5:00am to 10am. She was sent to a notorious children's home, where she gave birth to her first child, the result of a sexual assault.  Years later, she went in search of her birth family and discovered she was Indigenous, part of the Stolen Generation and a descendant of celebrated Indigenous Australian politicians. I was one year into my broadcasting career when I first met Mike Tomano in 2015. I hosted the midday show on River Country 101.7 FM and Mike was hired to do the morning show. At that point, Mike had been out of radio for a year or so and wanted to give it one last go around. I'm thankful he did. Otherwise, we may not have met. I remembered him from his days at The Kat 105.5 FM hosting mornings with Steve Touhy. I was excited to meet someone like him who was well known in the Kankakee Valley radio market. We quickly learned we had a lot in common and became friends. I also learned quite a bit of radio hosting skills from him as well. Now at this point in 2021, Mike is in his 2nd year hosting mornings on The Valley 92.7 FM and celebrating his 30th year in radio broadcasting. As you can imagine, he has several stories to share. The good, bad, and the ugly. Buckle up because this is a wild two hour ride through Mike Tomano's life. He was kind enough to open up to me about some sensitive subjects and I'm grateful he did. River Country; the first water theme park in Florida, US, and probably the world! What ever happened to it? Where is it now? Why do I feel like this is going to sound like a celebrity "where are they now?" E! episode? Well, I did mention it on the last episode, but didn't know I would be so lucky to have a guest talk about it with me! Welcome my CrossFit friend and Disney enthusiast, Mackenzie! River Country opened its wet doors in 1975, and literally hit capacity every day until it didn't reopen in 2002. What made this park so great? The Imagineers that crafted the rocks by hand to give it an authentic feel? Or was it that Gerald Ford's daughter was the first to ride down a slide? Or that some think there are conspiracy theories why it closed since Disney never gave an actual answer? It's all of them, honestly. Mackenzie and I go over all of these factors, how others tried to replicate the park (think Action Park in Jersey), what some of the reasons for the downfall were, and what we hope is the future legacy of River Country.
