In this episode we hear from Diné and Xicana sound artist Autumn Chacon who uses her activism, art practice and community involvement to communicate as a contemporary storyteller both locally and internationally. Autumn starts the conversation with reflection on the term Artist and how claiming this identity allows for a breaking of the rules institutional working environments do not allow. We talk about sound and noise art, the complications of being a conceptual artist, and Anarchism as a way to force understanding. We learn how Autumn became an activist at a young age, informed by her parents and their generations' advocacy and frontline work. Autumn shares her cultural relationship to sound and waveforms and how she has committed her life's work to the deconstruction of ownership and forced regulations - which she carries out in all facets of her artistic practice. We look at the global solidarity that was formed at Standing Rock during the NODAPL action and Autumn reflects on her time in the movement. Autumn breaks down a global performative action she organized with other Indigenous women in order to block funding for extractive industry and which has been formatted and used in actions globally. We end our conversation with Autumn's work as a pirate radio engineer and we learn how broadcast transmission plays an important role in her art practice - breaking the boundaries of how art is accessed in institutional spaces. She pays homage to the long lineage and power of “illegal” broadcasting and reflects how pirate radio forces us to ask an important question: ‘Who do you ask permission to, and why?' Autumn's sovereign communication tactics and long standing work as a sound artist and broadcast engineer continues on from a long line of activists who have used waveform as a critical tool for survival and communication during resistance. Autumn urges us to bring front and center an awareness of an ongoing silent struggle for our rights - reminding us to pay attention. Known simultaneously for the acerbic antics of his teenage years, the supportive dedication to organizing live events, and his refined skills for crushing harsh noise, Johnathan Cash a.k.a. Hollywood Johnny has been a divisive but respected fixture in contemporary American noise since the mid 2000s. In recent years, his absurdist performance oriented mainstay project BREAKDANCING RONALD REAGAN has been complimented by SUNK COST, a more studied masterclass in razor-sharp Japanese influenced harsh noise. Here, Johnny tells his story starting from the early days up until now, illustrating the complex and perhaps misunderstood nature of the man himself. In the Patreon exclusive EXT. segment, Johnny spills some Hollywood gossip on some of the biggest noise stars of the day, tells us his favorite budget pedals, and tells us what the deal with Sonic is... Adam speaks with American harsh noise master Worth, aka William Van Gorder, who has a new record on White Centipede Noise called Sacred Violence Noise. Will recorded the album while on residency in Thailand, and throughout the conversation relays the experiences he had there and in his Southeast Asia journey more broadly. What is it like to make noise for an audience that has no fucking clue what is happening? MAGIC! Duh. Talking about Thailand and Southeast Asia leads these two artists to discussion of another shared interest: writer New Juche. Juche is also an artist who finds transcendence in beauty in abjection and decay – the decay of the Southeast Asian landscape, and the abjection in his own perverse sexual habits. Human Fluid Rot has been performing energy filled, crowd oriented harsh noise since 2005. Originally from south Florida, HFR has been scouring the US and neighboring islands with brief but intense electronic performances including shows and festivals from California to the Dominican Republic with hopes to expand further into the world. HFR creates a hardcore and chaotic atmosphere. Audiences are always encouraged to physically interact with each other as well as with the performer. During HFR sets, nothing is off limits. Crowds have been seen moshing and even crowd surfing making Human Fluid Rot performances unmissable. Robert Brantley is an independent harsh noise artist out of Pompano Beach Florida. He will be the first to admit that his brand of entertainment is ultra-niche, but that's something he's embraced, and in doing so, has found his tribe and his place in the world. Live performances are a staple of the harsh noise scene— and with the COVID-19 pandemic taking a toll on entertainment as a whole— Robbie's scene has been hit especially hard. He isn't letting the circumstances stop him. He's finding a way to make it work and making sure he can stay connected to his audience, even when this year has forced us to stay apart. This episode is brought to you by Ozeal DeBastos and [link|https://www.ozealmedia.com|ozealmedia.com]. sIn is a harsh noise artist from Singapore who has been making music since 1992. Originally from the hardcore punk scene, he started making noise around a decade ago and has since toured extensively in Southeast Asia (mostly with his friend Dennis who performs as Schizophrenic Wonderland) and released a huge amount of recorded material. He works primarily with DIY equipment to generate sound and lighting, and he puts on some of the most intense performances you'll see at a DIY noise show.Saleh doesn't have much of an online presence for his music, but you can find him on Instagram and in some other places if you look. As he says in the interview, he's all about the personal connection, so reach out and say hi to him if you're interested in what he does. For me, Saleh embodies everything that's great about DIY; he works hard to make things happen, he's incredibly generous in sharing the resources he has with other musicians, and he's always pushing himself creatively to do something he hasn't done before.I also want to mention a new compilation called Sonic Vortex, which is out now on the Mindblasting netlabel. You can download it for free from archive.org or the Mindblasting webpage, and it's a huge 36 track beast which showcases what's going on in noise from around Southeast Asia right now. Saleh has a track on the compilation, as do I, and also a couple of previous guests on this podcast like Indra Menus and ASU (USA).Please subscribe to Concrescence Records on YouTube if you're a YouTube person. You can also get all of the episodes of the podcast on there too. Every Friday I'm posting a new 4k performance video, and on Mondays I post slightly lower quality handheld videos. At the moment I'm posting sets from the Jogja Noise Bombing Festival a few weeks ago; last week I posted a collaborative set between Catatonia from Singapore and Tzii from Belgium, and just as of this morning there's a crazy noise set by Chen Yi Chung and Wei Wang, who are two DJs from Taiwan. This week on a very dark and dangerous episode of Fanboys, the guys expose a psych-rock drug ring, try to reconcile emo with trumpet solos, and get violently assaulted by a harsh noise terrorist.
