In response, Trump erupted on Truth Social like a petty tinpot dictator, raging that Harvard should lose its tax exempt status and worse. We think this reveals a hidden weakness: Trump and MAGA know that if institutions don't capitulate to them, and band together to overcome their collective action problem, the Trump-MAGA assault could very well falter. If there's some way out of our disastrous mess, it partly involves major institutions doing exactly this, in a concerted, sustained way. We talked to Jonathan Friedman, the managing director of the free expression program at PEN America, about the real nature of Harvard's pushback, the prospects for more institutions following suit, and the potential for a real united front of resistance to disarm MAGA.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? One expert has warned Aucklanders should be prepared for the chance of a volcanic eruption. Civil Defence estimates there's a 10 percent risk it could happen in the next 50 years. It could cost $65 billion in building damage alone. Victoria University's Dr Finn Illsley Kemp says we'd get a decent warning before an eruption - but every aspect will be expensive, including evacuating the city. "We do think we'll get a warning when it is on the way, because this magma has to come from quite deep - we should be able to see it when it's on its' way, but when it's on the move, it doesn't hang around." But many Canadian industries are already feeling the pinch from tariffs Trump had imposed earlier, and big job losses are on the horizon.  This week, Liberal Leader Mark Carney headed to Ottawa and put on his prime minister's hat to respond to the crisis, just as Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was attempting a different strategy to address the Trump threat — to the country and to his own election campaign. One of the greatest shows on Earth has been going on now for several months in Hawaii, where the Kīlauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting since late December. The Kīlauea volcano is the most active volcano on Earth. It's also a relatively safe volcano in that it spends most of its time simmering and bubbling without any spectacularly explosive eruptions. But lately it has been putting on some incredible shows of lava fountains, with one glowing string of magma soaring about 1,000 feet in the air, a truly spectacular sight to see.  To understand what's going on with Kīlauea and what danger it poses, we're joined today by Matt Patrick, a research geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Back in July 1984, Guitar Player magazine featured Eddie Van Halen on the cover. Since staff editor Jas Obrecht had already interviewed Eddie multiple times, the team asked him to create a crash course in Eddie's playing style. Eddie agreed, and music editor Jim Ferguson was sent to LA for the “My Tips for Beginners” section. For more advanced players, Eruption—Van Halen's legendary guitar-and-drums instrumental from 1978—was the obvious choice. But who could accurately transcribe such a groundbreaking piece? The answer: a young Steve Vai, fresh off recording his Flex-Able solo album. At just 23, Vai was a Berklee College of Music graduate and a member of Frank Zappa's band. His meticulous handwritten transcription of Eruption—complete with detailed performance notes—was nothing short of a work of art. Fast-forward 40 years: In January 2025, Jas posted a podcast interview with Vai from his Skyscraper era with David Lee Roth. The response was overwhelming, so we knew fans would love to see this historic transcription. Steve graciously gave his permission, joking that he might question its accuracy today after so many years and notes played! This original 1984 transcription is now archived in the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection, thanks to the efforts of Shaw Lentz and the SFC team.
