We all like music, TV and conversations, but you might be surprised by the damage noise can do (even when you're having fun). Clogging your brain with loud sounds, alerts, and pings leads to a poor sleep schedule and sabotages your ability to focus. And you can't lead if you can't think. While quiet time can feel like you're missing out on something, it gives your brain time to reflect and rest (which is impossible to get in a busy, chaotic world). In this episode, you'll discover how to stop the buzz and use silence as a tool for a more peaceful and powerful life. Show Highlights Include: How to stop treating silence like a 'timeout' and embrace it to boost your intuition and awareness. (0:52) Why spending time in silence turns you into a true leader (and the three leadership skills silence teaches you). (5:06) How to stop 'noise pollution' from stressing out your body, raising your blood pressure, and damaging your hearing. (6:33) How to create the most concentrated and productive learning space with an 'Albert Einstein' level of noise. (11:52) Why ten minutes of quiet time is essential to your mental health (and how the military, workforce and schools use silence to boost performance). (14:38) Do you want to stop existing and start living your best life right now? Click here to get the first chapter of Dr. Rick's best-selling book, Lessons From a Third Grade Dropout, for free.

Complex cases appear to be clogging up our justice system, with manslaughter and murder offences making up more than 70% of all High Court trials. Chief Justice Dame Helen Winkelmann says the system is struggling to keep pace, in her latest Annual Report. Her report reveals a mix of delays, burnout, safety issues, and under-funding. Former High Court Judge and Parole Board Chair Sir Ron Young told Andrew Dickens it's horrifying that manslaughter and murder trials are taking 17 days or more. He says in the 1970s and 80s, murder trials took about three to five days. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show Highlights Include: How to stop treating silence like a ‘timeout' and embrace it to boost your intuition and awareness. (0:52) Why spending time in silence turns you into a true leader (and the three leadership skills silence teaches you). (5:06) How to stop ‘noise pollution' from stressing out your body, raising your blood pressure, and damaging your hearing. (6:33) How to create the most concentrated and productive learning space with an ‘Albert Einstein' level of noise.

A warning: This episode contains explicit language and mentions of rape. For the past two weeks, social media has been flooded with coverage and commentary on the conflict between Israel and Hamas. And while the news updates have been devastating, not everything coming across our feeds has been true. We've seen footage pulled from a video game purporting to show a Hamas fighter shooting down a helicopter, and a fake memo from the White House that claimed to announce $8 billion in military aid. This week, host Brittany Luse is joined by NPR correspondent Shannon Bond to learn why we're seeing so much misinformation online. Brittany is also joined by Molly McPherson, a crisis public relations expert, to unpack the hasty public statements about the conflict made by corporate brands and celebrities. They discuss how this may be indicative of a new media landscape that demands commentary and sentimentality. Then, we turn to Tupac Shakur. He is back in the news 27 years after his death, following the first arrest of a suspect connected to his murder. Joel Anderson, a Slate reporter who covered Tupac for the Slow Burn podcast, joins Brittany to discuss Tupac's complex impact and how the rapper has been able to stay relevant almost three decades after his passing.
We hear from Tom Cuddy, head of Asset Operations with Uisce Éireann

My guest this week is the incredible Jodie Berndt. She is a wife, mother, speaker and author of the best-selling Praying the Scriptures book series, which teaches to use God's word to enhance your prayer life. Her newest book, Praying the Scriptures for Your Marriage, is available now. She and her husband Robbie have four children, and they live in Virginia Beach. Jodie has such a deep well of wisdom, and I loved this conversation all around marriage. 2:56 – Jodie 101 She has been married to her husband for nearly 38 years. They both went to University of Virginia. Things Jodie planned to do with her life didn't usually work out. She has enjoyed the unexpected nature of where life has taken her. Jodie met a woman whose husband was an author. Jodie began writing for him. 7:11 – How her series was born Jodie's first book was about miracles. She loved using the Bible to help her pray for her family and herself. That led to her book series about Praying the Scriptures 12:20 – Work vs. personal life People often introduce Jodie as a prayer expert or warrior. But she doesn't feel comfortable with those titles. She is just someone who's aware of her own need for God's help. Jodie asks God to help her, even when it's hard to obey Him. 15:34 – Clogging the prayer lines? Some people tell Jodie they feel bad about praying for simple things, like a child's field hockey team or wanting a new refrigerator. They see it as “clogging the prayer lines” when there are more important things happening in the world. When you pray about the little things, it lets you live with a greater sense of gratitude. 23:12 – Getting to know God Prayer isn't so much about getting things from God as it is about getting God and getting to know Him better. 25:08 – Prayer and marriage People kept asking Jodie for a book about prayer and marriage, but she didn't think the world needed any more. She already had a lot of books on her shelf about marriage. Her passion for the project developed as she worked on it. 40:18 – Praying together Praying with your spouse can be awkward, especially if you have different styles of prayer. You can download a 31-day prayer calendar that has suggestions for topics, like generosity. 53:20 – Favorite thing to do with her husband Jodie loves being grandparents together and going boating. FEATURED QUOTES I kind of fell backwards into writing, but it's been a fun journey. People will often introduce me as a prayer expert or prayer warrior. I'm just like, “Whoa, whoa! I don't consider myself an expert or a warrior. I consider myself who's really aware of her own need for God for his help.” I think, “God, help me obey you, even when it's really hard.” The best stuff comes out of the wrestle. When you pray about the little things, it lets you live with a greater sense of gratitude. Prayer isn't so much about getting things from God as it is about getting God and getting to know Him better. https://jodieberndt.com/
