Iceland punches well above its weight in the world of music, producing global icons like Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, and Laufey, while at the same time nurturing a vibrant local scene. Icelandic Pop: Then, Today, Tomorrow, Next Week (Reaktion, 2025) by Dr. Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen explores how Iceland's unique social habits, institutions and everyday practices contribute to its thriving music culture.  Tracing the development of Icelandic popular music since the rock 'n' roll era, it examines key influences shaping the scene, from Reykjavík's musicians to national institutions like radio and concert venues. With engaging explanations of sociological factors, the book sheds light on why Iceland has become a powerhouse in music. An illuminating journey through Iceland's music history, this is a celebration of the artistry and cultural forces behind its global impact. The Business Power Hour with Deb Krier

Juliet Ewing is rapidly becoming known as an exciting, masterful interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Equally at home in jazz clubs and on concert stages, she is following in the footsteps of Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee in that she can swing when she so desires, yet always stays connected to the rich and musically diverse songbook singing tradition that these great ladies of song exemplified. Fun yet elegant, Juliet enjoys singing the full spectrum of popular song, from the musical chestnuts of George Gershwin and Cole Porter to the contemporary stylings of Sting, Laufey, and Sade. Perhaps the word that best exemplifies Juliet's artistry is “timeless.” Juliet regularly performs as a soloist or with her trio “The Juliet Set” in and around NYC in jazz clubs and private events. marked by a golden voice that resonates with warmth and clarity, captivating audiences with every note. On September 12, she released her album Simply 'S Wonderful-The Magic of Gershwin.

Laufey's a young Icelandic/Asian jazz aficionado. Studying the music from her parents, she's kept the genre alive through self-compositions this decade. Fans are dazzled of her writing, singing, playing piano/guitar/cello! "Third time's the charm" for 3rd album A Matter of Time, topping jazz charts, and just crossed over #4 on Billboard's 200 albums chart. Brilliantly romanticizing a "timely" concept record. The musical landscape of September 2024 unfolds like a treasure map of sonic discoveries as Matt Sidhom and guest co-host Jen Tully navigate through twelve diverse new releases that defy easy categorization. They kick things off with the track, "Everybody Scream," from Florence and the Machine's upcoming sixth album, which creates a space where women don't have to "be quiet" or "be kind" – a witchy celebration of unrestrained feminine power. Meanwhile, Role Model's infectious "Sally When the Wine Runs Out" has transformed into a cultural moment, with celebrities from Natalie Portman to Al Roker taking turns as the song's namesake during live performances. The conversation shifts to gritty territory with Idles' "Rabbit Run," where Joe Talbot's distinctive Cockney delivery powers the soundtrack to Austin Butler's new film. This leads into Old Dominion's surprisingly affecting "Miss You Man," a country ballad that captures male friendship and grief with remarkable authenticity. Wet Leg reveals unexpected vulnerability with "Pokemon," a softer departure from their typically harder-edged sound, while Doja Cat delivers another potential hit with "Jealous Type" . The musical journey continues through jam band territory with Goose's soulful "Madelena," the country-rap fusion of BigXThaPlug and Shaboozey's "Home," and the truly unexpected "Clockwork" by Laufey, which sounds like a Disney princess number addressing thoroughly modern themes. The episode closes with universal praise for Dominic Fike's "Sandman," a perfect blend of hip-hop, rap, and old-school R&B influences that showcases why he remains one of music's most exciting voices. Discover these tracks and more by following Super Awesome Mix on Instagram and YouTube, and don't miss Jen's podcast "What Are You Listening To" with new Season 7 episodes dropping now!https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-new-music-september-2025/pl.u-pmebHdKjlz1. John is joined by singer-songwriter and musician Laufey and producer Spencer Stewart to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘Silver Lining'. Having performed on numerous national TV singing shows in her youth, Icelandic-Chinese artist Laufey released her first full-length album, ‘Everything I Know About Love' in 2022. It was praised for seamlessly blending jazz influences with contemporary production. Her second album, ‘Bewitched', continued this trend with its captivating jazz-pop ballads and earned her the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Laufey met producer Spencer Stewart when they were students at music college in the US and they have been collaborating ever since. Laufey's much anticipated third album ‘A Matter of Time' was released on 24th August 2025. Sitting down at Strongroom Studios in London, the trio discuss how creativity often involves breaking formal rules, why the voice is an underrated instrument, the importance of not being a snob when it comes to technology and their belief that when it sounds wrong in the studio, it might just be because you've hit on something really original!  Tracks discussed: Lover Girl; Tough Luck; Too Little, Too Late TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. The third album from Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey, ‘A Matter of Time' represents a shift towards vulnerability and emotional expressiveness. Her two earlier albums were heavily influenced by the ‘Great American Songbook', filled with her now iconic blend of jazz, classical, and pop influences. ‘A Matter of Time' is a look inwards, Laufey's interest in seeing how she could draw out the “most flawed parts of [herself] and look at them directly in the mirror”. Estelle Clifford joined Jack Tame to give her thoughts on the album. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The last time Laufey touched base with Vogue, she was just 24 years old and an aspiring musician in hopes of one day winning a Grammy. Today, just two years later she now returns to visit The Run Through With Vogue as a household name and a Grammy winner. It was all just a matter of time for the Icelandic prodigy to reach this level of success and to become one of Gen Z's favorite “pop girls.” Her sound is genre-defying breaking down the barriers of jazz, pop, and classical music making her sound utterly unique to her. And that's why it's not a surprise that her third studio album, her most vulnerable yet, is also titled A Matter of Time. Earlier on the show we also catch up with The Run Through hosts Chloe Malle and Chioma Nnadi where they talk about British Vogue's September cover star Michaela Coel, Taylor Swift's upcoming album, and why everyone loves Copenhagen street style.  Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
