In this episode Josh brought up a discussion topic that was the focus of the entire show, how do we go about "teaching and learning games?" Given our backgrounds in education we easily could have kept talking about this but had to cut ourselves off but it was a lot of fun to have this personal conversation in an effort of sharing our perspectives and experiences. In addition, we also dive into game design choices such as intro games, recommended first plays, and campaign/legacy systems as a method of the game trying to be the teacher. We hope that you enjoy this episode, and more importantly find it helpful to you and your game group. As Josh mentioned several times, we would love to hear from you about what you have seen that has worked well or not so well. Please email those suggestions to us at Boardgameimpact@gmail.com. We're going to be talking about teaching and learning games and some strategies that ends a stay tuned. How do you welcome to the latest episode of board game impact. My name is bruce. And i'm always joined by. This is josh and today. we're gonna be talking about teaching and learning games. But if you haven't heard if you haven't listened to us before please make sure to hit that. Subscribe button so you can get all the latest episodes because we are taking our educational lenses working on my phd. And josh and i both work and higher education and so we take those lenses and we apply them to the gaming situations that were having to break them down for your group benefit and so two days probably one of the most important ones there because we're literally talking about teaching and learning. It's a little on the nose with this little on the nose with this one like literally. I was teaching my class earlier today. So this is really about like some strategies and things like that. But i'll let josh get into that in a second but that is who we are. We also do some youtube videos occasionally. But we're very excited to be talking to you about this. So make sure to subscribe and then also go on over to facebook and instagram and follow us there. So just this was your brainchild which is interesting because we both work in education in find opposite fifty four for us to do this so walk us through kind of where this game from. Yes so this is a topic that i've been very interested in bringing to the show for quite a while now and where this really started for me is. I have traveled a lot over the past five ten years of my life. I've moved around for different jobs and different things like that and board games have always been my home whenever i find a new home. Is you know the first thing i do is i find. Where's where do people meet up to play board games in this new town that i'm living in and so it's how i introduce myself to people and how i meet people. I have found in the process of doing that. That i as i find new groups and new individuals that i'm learning a lot of new games that i hadn't heard of from other people but i'm also bringing a lot of two groups that have not had those games before and so i'm doing a lot of teaching And a lot of learning. And so i have realized and found and discovered over time some techniques and ways that i have modified the way that i teach games too i think improve my teaching methodology for different games. I found things work. I found things that don't work. And and so. I kind of wanted to bring this topic to the show. And you know. Bruce and i. We've we've talked a little bit. About how a very particular game that we're going to mention a little bit later on has a really great teaching mechanism built into the rule book. And that really kind of prompted me to say you ...

Welcome back to another episode of board game impact. Of course my name is bruce. And i'm joined by. This is josh. Josh and so we are recording I just want to give a quick caveat before we get started so the episode that came out last week. This is yeah. It's only been a week. And that is because texas froze over for a week and so thank you for understanding this kind of like weird schedule just one put that out there because literally there's rolling quote unquote rolling blackouts across the state and for many people. It wasn't rolling and there's still power and things like that and so if you're listening to this and the state of texas we just want to say and you're still having some ongoing things or friends who are just wanted to say like. Hey i hope all that gets worked out fast and that you are safe and that we are here with you and this is one of those times. That josh is getting put out there. Very thankful to be aboard gamer. Because when the power went out for hours on end i was able to get in some games and just opened up the blinds in the snow. The snow reflected the the sun pretty well so we can get some games so actually have more games than i was planning to even be able to talk about things going on. That's good right. Glad you found found some ways to entertain while you were there definitely elizabeth and i were thinking about you a lot over the last weekend of course Sitting all of our thoughts and well wishes to all of our listeners and everyone Down there in texas I know that that is a struggle I can only imagine what some folks have been going through so Yeah glad here that you Are doing well. I'm glad to hear that that caitlin is doing well and Hope hope everyone else out. There is also making through in this Very very strange times very much and by strange like you can't be like you're right on the money because literally four days ago it was negative one. And it's now seventy so it is just crazy. What's been nice this out there. I'm on a couple email threads with fellow geeks. Who board game geek. Things and it's been really nice having people like reach out and see this community come together and so if you're like okay. What the heck is this podcast about. This is your first time. We are so this is a board game related podcast. And so what does she do. We both work in higher education. And so what we do. Is we break down our gaming experiences through our educational lenses for the benefit of you and your gaming group and so if that sounds like something of interest makes to hit subscribe and we put out these episodes every other week with the obvious exception of texas freezes over so with that be...

Welcome back to another episode of impact. As always i am bruce. I'm jordan. Joined by and this is josh. Well josh they say that fears the mind killer but so far getting started is thrown me off. I think it's just because we're very excited about this game and talk about it. Because i know you and i both had some anticipation with it. But before we get into that if this is your first episode of board game impact what you're here for is we look at games through educational lenses. We both work fulltime and higher education and we apply those lenses to unpack games and gaming experiences for you and your benefit so by listening to this is gonna be a deep dive into dune. Imperium and so Josh what do you want to say to kick us off a little bit. Yeah bruce. I was very excited about this game. I definitely had my acquisition disorder All a buzz So love the dune franchise Barracks cited to see this movie. When it finally comes out please. Yes at some point But you know. I fell in love. I actually came late to the dune party. I kinda picked up the books. Probably about two or three years ago And just absolutely fell in love because it's a phenomenal especially the first book The the main book dune For listeners who aren't really aware dune imperium is set in the dune universe series of novels by frank. Herbert sifi Political intrigue drama type series. That is absolutely fantastic So very very excited to play this really excited to talk about it and and get some thoughts. Yeah and so Dean premium is made by designed by paldon and it was put out by dire wolf who you might know for doing some pretty great things over with some digital app adaptations so they did the digital adaptations of route but also this is the team that brought clank together. So there's a little bit deck building in this. Some really cool things and josh was saying a little bit about his position -ality so like our lenses that are getting applied to this. I was later to the dune thing too. I honestly picked up a copy. Abdoun my local like half price books for like five bucks two years ago. Because i'm like. I need to read this. And then when i found out the movie was coming out and was like blown away by the trailer owes like i need to read this and so i read the book and then a month before the movie is supposed to come out. Movie comes out next year. So i'm a little caught up now but honestly back in the day josh before i ever really knew. What dune was things like that. I was really into the real time strategy games and like command and conquer right or red alert. But i also really like dune. Two thousand which was based on the dune universe and these different houses vying for control. Did you ever play that. I did not. It's pretty cool. It's exactly like command and conquer and things like that. Where you have your factions. You build the buildings and then you're trying to go out which later evolved into things like starcraft which took the world by storm but yeah these things were first starcraft. Just put that out. There did not never never played any of that. Okay look that up yeah. It's pretty cool. The graphics today's standard. Not that great. But if you like the lower of dune sand worms. I knew what a sand worm was new kinds of stuff back. Then and so.

This is bruce. And i'm joined by ho ho ho. This is josh and we hope that no matter where you're listening to this from that you are able to celebrate the holidays. Whichever those are we just happened to have this music for this but no matter what holiday you choose to celebrate. Or don't we're just so thankful to get to have these winter seasons together and spend time together and just come together as friends and family and all this time and we had two thousand twenty has been a heck of a year so coming together whether virtually things like that. It's really important so we encourage you to do this. And that's why we're gonna do this episode so josh. What are we doing for this episode. Well bruce for this episode. We're gonna talk about what are the games. We are hoping. Make it under our tree this year. Exactly so for us. Josh do both and our families both do celebrate christmas but regardless it's really just the spirit of giving and so that's why we thought this would be cool just here what things we're looking forward to but in this different vein of light and so i think it's important to start us off not with what we want. But how do we ask for it. And by the way real quick if this is your first episode of ward game impact first. It's a very different than normal. The second of all what. We are biweekly. Podcast on gaming and joshua both work fulltime in higher education and we apply those educational lenses to our gaming experiences to break them down for the benefit of union game group. That sounds like something of interest to you like. Make sure to subscribe. And if you wanna learn more about us and see like behind the scenes stuff you can also head over to board game. Impact dot com to learn that or check out the patriots patriot. Patriots dot com. Such him back but with that being said josh. How the heck do we even tell people about what we want for the holidays or birthday. Whatever what do you do so this is really challenging for me. And i thinks probably something. That's challenging for a lot of gamers out there especially if you are interested in things revolve around gaming and you have family that may not really understand or be involved in the hobby So one thing that that my family does. And it's just become our thing. Is we have each of us have an amazon wishlist that is shared with the rest of the family that we can ask things to as we go generally personally i would prefer to send people other places you can find places games cheaper. It different online retailers It's nice to support. Local game stores all those types of things but we just find because my family is a little bread out that it is just a little bit easier to just have that amazon wishlist. If people want to go looking other places and find a deal or support local businesses in their areas. They are welcome to do that. But that gives everybody kind of a starting point at least...

What have we been buying throughout these last couple of months and i also have some research pulled up on our buying habits and what can be going on there during these kinds of things but we're gonna be talking about games you've acquired and also more importantly what led us to getting them and the reasons behind why we're getting them and so if you're interested in content like that wanna points you over to our youtube channel. We recently just posted another video. This one's on loss aversion particularly in clans of caledonia. So how games and other situations can make you not want to take certain actions based on the potential losses. The you might be losing things on the board or resources etc so go. Check that out over on you. Youtube pitch but josh. What are you interested in about today in this topic. Yeah so i mean we've got. I think we've both been doing a little bit of. Yeah i guess therapy shopping by the looks of it as well as just some general You know getting some new things in and playing around with them. And so i think it's really interesting to talk to you especially with With you because i i've been able just by the nature of Where where i live and the the case rates of where i've been living Things are getting a little bit worse right now. But i've been able to be playing some games in person and so My purchases have been hitting the table pretty quickly for the most part But i find it very interesting kind of change that i've seen in in your purchasing habits and so i think that's something that i'm really interested to kind of explore a little bit here. Yeah i think that's going to be cool to talk about to and you're right You have been able to get things to the table so one of the things we talk about often is position in things right. We are both married We both with our spouses. And that's all that are there.
This episode is something new for Bruce & Josh as it is conversation around a singular topic and its interactions within the gaming experience. This episode is all a researched conversation about the sunk cost fallacy which refers to people having a greater tendency to continue an endeavor once an investment in time, effort, or money has been made (Arkes & Blumer, 1985). Inspired by Bruce's recent videos on the YouTube page and a recent play of For Sale by Josh in which he felt the pressure to keep bidding money to stay for a property card enabled this conversation and we hope you enjoy. We are toying with having one of our 2 episodes a month being themed like this, let us know your thoughts! In this episode Bruce was inspired by the design of the Dune Imperium pre-order and conversation from the epistemology video/podcast episode to shed more light on aspects of aesthetic value. This premiered first on the Board Game Impact YouTube page, but the content transfers well to the audio format. The reason for this different kind of episode is because of the life happenings that occurred for Bruce which he discusses at the intro, and thanks you for understanding. We hope you get excited for this different type of content over on the YouTube page and would love to hear from you about your thoughts/ideas! Bruce is going to talk about the dune imperium preorder and aesthetic value stay tuned. Well how do you everybody. This is bruce with board game impact. It's just me today if you listen to last week's episode then you know kind of what's up but if this is your first episode. Welcome this one's going to be a little different than normal podcast episodes but that being said what we do over here. Impact is josh. I both work fulltime in higher education. I also teach some classes of the university. And i'm getting peachy and so what we're doing. Is we apply our educational lenses to the game experiences and games we playing and the game content we are consuming too then analyze it for your benefit and present that back to you for you and your gaming group so hopefully you can make informed choices about your experiences in the hobby and so with that being said this twenty twenty s been just weird for everybody. Let's just put it that way. And if you're listening to this in the future this is coming out at the beginning of november and we're still in the midst of the pandemic and also now all the election stuff so yes just look back on this with a grain of salt. And so what's going on to is as i talked about last week's intro i. We've josh and i both had some things. I was sick for a while. As well as i just had a family member pass in these last two weeks so i've been pulled away for family things which made scheduling regular episodes with a little difficult. And i thank you for understanding that. But that being said i have also had moments of inspiration and it's been this one of these cathartic releases of doing these things to do something uplifting while also attending all these family things which you can imagine having these spurts of emotion and feelings both that being said last week so it talked about What's called the what is knowledge and it was a crash course based on some conversations. I encourage you to go. Listen to that one. But as i mentioned i was going to be doing is this one is all about the dune imperium preorder and this actually stems from conversations in the youtube comments for that last episode so the youtube video for the last episode actually came first and then there was some conversation. Hey lean into this thing on value a little bit more. We'd like that. And i have many more ideas of different types of content of essentially combining my phd work. As well as the sport game content and trying to mash that up and present that back of cure some lessons and so. I've got some really cool things. I'm working on but to be one hundred percent transparent. The feedback for these videos has been nothing but the most reward one of the most rewarding things i've done don't get me wrong. I absolutely love recording. This podcast with josh.
This episode is a little different, as Bruce will share there has been some life things that popped up which threw off recording schedule. This being said, Bruce was able to make some new content and post it to the Board Game Impact YouTube Channel. In this episode Bruce shares what has been going on, the inspiration for the video, and the introduces the audio of the video content which has been very popular on the YouTube Channel. This is not the norm for the channel, but Bruce felt this is still a great way to get you some podcast content while acknowledging that there has been some life that has come up...alas the narrative of 2020. Thanks for understanding, and we hope you enjoy! So stay tuned. Howdy everybody. It's Bruce with board game impact and in this episode. It's going to be a little different. It's just me and that's wonderful. But Josh is sorely missed of course and so this is your first time tuning into board game impact where podcast in which we are bringing our educational ends is both Josh and I work full time in higher education. I also teach a couple of classes adjoining my PhD and so what we do is we take those educational lenses and apply them to the games and gaming experiences that we're playing and getting to enjoy some time and apply that to your benefit and your gaming groups benefit so you can make informed choices. And so that sounds like something of interest to you make sure to hit subscribe but that being said today is going to be a little different in that if you are listening to this live you might be wondering. Hey, I I think we're a week behind where was the content and but if you're listening to us in the future dead there was a week Gap and so what's going on in being fully transparent with everybody is Josh had his wedding anniversary and then we were supposed to record but then I actually got a pretty sick -4 That Russell looking forward to our semesters ending so we have even more freedom but that being said in these like different times and not really knowing when families going to need different things. There's a couple of moments in which I got pretty just inspired by some conversations. I was seeing online and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to do something different that I haven't done before off and that was combined the kind of work and kind of lenses. I know that sounds interesting based on the intro just did but really take like let's go to the library and let's look stuff up and let's scripts something out and let's do an educational lesson from like my teaching side of things something. I hadn't really considered before cuz there's no content that looks like that and I did it and I put it out there to the world and immediately. I got some really good feedback and I'm not going to go through like what inspired it because you're going to hear that in a second job. Is what this episode is today, is it is that first video? So this one's going to be on what's called epistemology. So what is knowledge and unpacking that as well as a little bit about value off. But the reason I did this I will tell you that and I'm going to talk about it more in the upcoming minutes here in a second. But what happened was I was in a conversation over on the secret cabal guilt cuz Josh and I both listen to the secret cabal. We love their content and there was this interesting conversation about honestly a ...

If you've never heard of it, it's been around since two thousand eight they've raised over seventy million dollars for children's Miracle Network they partner with one hundred and. One hundred seventy different children's miracle network hospitals throughout North America which is really just great. It's really benefiting kids and right now they're also raising the funds towards the. Children's hospitals. COVID. Nineteen Relief Fund which is really really really cool. So just fight forty million people unemployed in the US alone. So I know finances are rough for a lot of families out there, and this is a really great way to help kids. With all of this and help those families who are in that situation I have a story told at the beginning of streaming. Tell again a minute. But essentially what we did is Josh when I found out about extra tabletop appreciation month. Appreciation weekend about two weeks ago if you're listening to this live or listening to this on. Tuesday. And we end every episode with the same thing, every single time and that is. Go, and make a positive impact on the world and so when we learned about this and we love gaming and this is about tabletop gaming doing something good for others, Josh what are we say?

Since recording a episode is GonNa Launch Tomorrow Josh and I found out about and have gotten involved with extra life. So Extra Life is a nonprofit here in the US It's been around since two thousand eight and they benefit children's miracle network hospitals, and so since two thousand eight, they've donated to seven hundred seventy million dollars man my word right now I'm blown away for a reason I'm going to get in second. That's why I'm a little tripping over my words of they've donated over seventy million dollars to children's miracle network. And this year, they're doing a tabletop appreciation weekends. This is in the month of August of twenty twenty in the midst of the pandemic and people starting to go back to school, and with that, there's a lot of people who need help. And especially kids. And help help with hospital things isn't something that a kid or a family with kids should really have to worry about and so. They're also partnering this year with Children's hospitals covid nineteen really fund, and that's why they're doing this table top appreciation window, and so with that being said Josh, end every single episode with go of positive impact on the world, and as soon as we heard about this since recording tomorrow's episode, we said we have to do this like this is an absolute. Welcome back for another episode of Board. Game Impact of course I am Bruce I'm joined by. This is Josh and today we're going to be talking about experiences that were having in this weird like digital hybrid world thing that we got going on with Covid nineteen still in full fledge at the time of this recording. So we hope that no matter where you are in the world, you your family, everybody safe, and we can knock this thing out, so we can get back to more things and more gaming around the table, but that being said there's still plenty of cool opportunities that we're having and you can have. And, so we wanted to talk about that today and so. Josh, weren't you? Kinda kick us off like what's going on in your neck of the woods. What are things looking like for gaming for you? Sure so. I kind of have two things going on right now when it comes to to gaming. kind of taking it from two different approaches, so the first is. Still continuing to reconnect with. Past game groups and doing some gaming online I know that you and I have gotten a chance to get some games and together but then also more recently have started to. Isolate my gaming group a little bit so rather than I think I've talked in the past about I have a pretty large game group here. The game store that I normally go to About forty people on average on a weekend awesome and so. Obviously. That's just not gonNA. Work Right now, So I've kind of isolated it down to a handful of people and recently started a ten by. We're calling Tim. By Five kind of scaled down version of ten by ten so furloughs news aren't aware. Choosing ten games. And trying to play those games five times throughout the course of a year so. Keeping it to just a handful of folks, so we've got four people and and really kind of enjoying kind of digging into some depths of SIM Games that we all really really enjoy. That sounds horrible. Yeah. It's been great a really really good time you know. We each threw in the name of two games that we really wanted to. Kind of dig deep into and really get some meat out of okay. Now, we we, we do not have ten so each person then through in one more game for consideration or at twelve twelve. Out of those four extras, we played all of them once and then independent of one another. We ranked those four games one. so our favourite got a score of one are least favorite gotta score four. We revealed those scores tallied them up and golf scored it, so the lowest to scoring games got added into our ten by five, and then we counted those plays towards our five play throughs of each game. So now we just kind of once a week. We get together. We play two games at a time Go through that way. I really really enjoy going through. You know one of the things that I really love about. This hobby is learning new games and. Seeing all these different things coming out,
CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains conversations around Racism, Black Lives Matter, and Representation This episode is different, the times that this episode goes live are different. At this recording there are mass protests throughout the United States in response to systemic racial issues that was catalyzed by the George Floyd death a week before we recorded this. Given the state of the world, Josh and I felt it would be inappropriate to not have a conversation about how we can support voices as a hobby and to encourage that the hobby move to be more inclusive. We love games, but we also believe that the hobby can be more than it currently is. When that happens we all win as at the end of the day games are nothing without people! In this episode we simply have a conversation. We came at this episode from our educational backgrounds to shed light on how we can make a positive impact on the world. The tagline that we end every episode with. In this episode there is no intro we just jump into the conversation. The article that Josh presented titled Seriously – boardgames?
