Keeping an accidental trend of looking back at some of the most unconventional horror films of 2024, we offer you a conversation about Tilman Singer's CUCKOO. We're joined this week by two friends from Van Ryder Games, AJ Porfirio and Julie Ahern, to discuss this strange and occasionally befuddling examination of exploration of fractured relationships and twisted scientific exploitation. While opinions on the film were decidedly mixed, the conversation is lively and thoughtful as we unpack the myriad of themes we think this film is attempting to explore. Also featuring some fun conversation about the Van Ryder Games tabletop sensation Final Girl, this is a hearty but fun conversation that we really hope you enjoy.4:58 - Getting to know Julie Ahern18:40 - Updates on Final Girl39:10 - CUCKOOSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We had the privilege to sit down with A. J. Porfirio and Evan Derrick to discuss their thrilling solo board game: FINAL GIRL. They had incredible success with the first iteration of Final Girl, a highly thematic and incredibly variable horror game where you play as a "final girl" character to defeat a killer, and now they're back with Series 2! They broke down for us the inception of the game and its basic mechanics, as well as how to join the kickstarter and make your selections for gameplay.Joined also by professional gamer and friend of the show Paula Deming, as well as FoGger Matt Murray (who owns and loves the game as well), we had a fantastic time discussing this exciting new game and we want to encourage you to check out the discussion and check out the kickstarter before it closes!Go to kickstarter.com and search for "Final Girl" to find the project and enjoy!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's Final February on Video Monsters! We're piggy-backing off of last month's SCREAM series by expanding into a series of broader discussions on Final Girl tropes in slasher films. First up is a very special presentation of CARDBOARD MONSTERS, our occasional series where we review board games from a movie-lover's perspective. This time Nathan and Eric discuss the single-player slasher strategy game FINAL GIRL, published by Van Ryder Games. Players assume the role of – you guessed it – the final girl as she fights her way through various horror-movie scenarios that ultimately culminate in a life-or-death confrontation with a homicidal maniac. The game offers a number of movie-inspired “Feature Film” add-ons with additional gameplay modifications, final girls, locations, and killers that can be mixed and matched for a practically unlimited variety of different scenarios. And since we're primarily a film podcast, we will not only talk about our enjoyment of the game itself but also how much the gameplay and thematic presentation successfully evokes the feeling of playing out the tropes of your favorite slasher flicks. So clear off the table, grab your chonky dice, and hit play quickly before you run out of time to listen to our CARDBOARD MONSTERS presentation of FINAL GIRL! Back the Final Girl Series 2 Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vanrydergames/final-girl-series-2 For more information about Final Girl, as well as other Van Ryder Games projects, visit their website at: https://www.vanrydergames.com/ If you enjoyed this episode, come join the Video Monsters crew on Discord!! In the 14th Century B.C.E., the pharaoh Akhenaten attempted to shift Egypt into monotheism centered on the cult of the god Aten. Apparently there's some who argue it was possibly instead henotheism, whereby many gods are acknowledged but one is elevated above the others--a claim advanced about many ostensibly mono- or polytheistic religions, even some practised today--but at any rate is was exceptionally controversial. By the time his son Tutankhaten became pharaoh, the cult of Aten was suppressed, and the ascendancy of the god Amun was restored in a polytheistic pantheon. Hence the new pharaoh's name was changed from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun.
