Since my last episode, the US surpassed its total number of positive cases by the total number of vaccinated Americans. While this is a remarkable milestone, there is a lot of misinformation amongst the general public regarding vaccination and infection. In this episode, I simplify the immune response to help you understand the underlying mechanisms of vaccination. How do we recognize foreign pathogens? How do we detect where in the body an infection might be? What steps are taken to fight off a pathogen before it can cause damage? You’ll find all of these answers and more in today’s segment. In Being Mortal, a book written by an award-winning surgeon, Dr. Atul Gawande introduced a concept which left me wondering about how we reflect upon certain chapters of our lives. He talks about the remembering-self and the experiencing-self in the context of end-of-life conversations that he had with terminal patients. In today's episode, we highlight how these two versions of ourselves allows us to associate feeling with certain memories, as well as psychological concepts such as the serial position effect and the recency effect.
