He had no rescue board, no flotation device, no backup—just a gut‑deep conviction that he couldn't stand there watching while people disappeared under the water.​He fought his way through the surf toward the nearest struggling swimmer, timing his breaths between waves, pushing past the shock of cold, the drag of the current, the sting of salt in his eyes. When he reached the first person—a stranger, gasping, eyes wide with terror—he wrapped an arm around them and kicked hard, angling diagonally to escape the rip, dragging them inch by inch back toward safety.​On the shore, lifeguards were already launching into action, but the current was pulling more than one person out. Most people would have gotten that first swimmer in and collapsed. Ahmed did something else.​He turned around and went back.Witnesses later described watching him make multiple trips into the danger zone, each time more exhausted than the last, each time choosing to go anyway. He helped pull more swimmers—some barely conscious, some crying, some shaking with shock—back toward the reach of lifeguards and other helpers who were now in the water too.​Every time he came in, the safe choice was to stop.He could have told himself: “I've done enough. Someone else will get the rest.”Instead, he treated “enough” as if it didn't apply when lives were on the line.By the time the rip had released its grip and everyone was accounted for, multiple people were alive who almost certainly would not have survived those minutes without someone intervening that fast and that decisively. “If I hadn't have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…”   The early 90's was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal.    “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…”   While ANTHRAX began the 90's with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX!    With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band's output throughout the 80's with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90's due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80's era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so.   “Alright, well it's not like we've never done that for you before…”   Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it's not as fun for me when I push away”. Coulterville, California is a relic of the Gold Rush; a small mountain community nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  There are 110 residents of the town, which is situated at the crossroads of two state highways that take tourists to and from mountain tourist attractions like Yosemite National Park.  Like so many other towns of the Old West, Coulterville has an Odd Fellows Lodge, but one that was on the verge of closing.  Just when it seemed like the lodge was about to join so many other Gold Rush-era lodges in the history books, along came Erica Wolfsen, a multi-generational resident of Coulterville, and Willow Polson, her friend and partner in reviving the lodge.  When they joined, rumors were swirling around the town that the lodge couldn't afford to stay open.  They both stepped up and found ways to make the lodge an essential part of the community again and membership has rebounded as a result.  They tell us the story of what they did and how they did it.  Spoiler alert: it involves getting active and holding events in the community.  The Shoutout goes to another re-chartered lodge, this time San Antonio No. 11 in Texas.  In the Odd Podge, Erica raves about the inspiring speech Grand Master of California Rita Cooper gave at her recent visitation, Willow shares her happiness with the recent membership gains, Toby talks about the new plan his associate lodge has adopted to bring members in more gradually, and Ainslie previews the sad but rewarding duty of tending to a member at the end of his life.
