Overall trust between racial groups in Singapore and appreciation for diversity have grown. That’s according to a recent study by the Institute of Policy Studies and racial harmony advocacy group OnePeople.sg, which also found a dip in reports of racial discrimination at work across the board compared with the previous study. However, stereotyping went up and an area of concern highlighted was the decline in cross-racial friendships from 2018 to 2024. On this episode of Morning Shot, Dr Mathew Mathews, Head of Social Lab & Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies shares more insights from the study. How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces" (Matthew 7:1-6).   Three facts about implicit bias or implicit prejudice are listed below. Implicit bias is a harmful misconception about a specific race. Stereotyping is a social cognition process that enables people to make sense of what their world looks like. It involves the categorization of individuals into social groups based on certain characteristics. This process can lead to the assumption that all group members share the same traits and behaviors, resulting in unfair and inaccurate generalizations. Implicit bias expressions are actions, words, or behaviors that stem from unconscious prejudices and lead to unfair treatment, degrading actions, unequal treatment, and the abuse of power through verbal aggression or vulgarity directed at individuals of a specific race.   Understanding that implicit bias can cause individuals to link certain groups with specific traits or characteristics automatically and can be dangerous when action is applied. For example, it can lead to assuming that people from a particular racial or ethnic group are more likely to be criminals, to believe that women are less competent in certain professions unfairly, or that a particular race, because of their skin color, is inferior.   It's crucial to be aware of these biases, work towards creating a more inclusive and fair society for everyone, and associate yourself with the right people. The problem is that you might walk into the wrong person who is prejudice and has ulterior motives when looking for the right person.   Many people desire to have kind-hearted individuals in their lives, but this season, there are prejudice people with intentions to cause harm. Make sure you're not one of them. Researcher Ellen Galinsky has released a brand new book about teenagers. It's called “The Breakthrough Years: A New Scientific Framework for Raising Thriving Teens”, and it includes five things teens wish their parents and other adults knew about them. All this week, we're looking at what Galinsky heard from teenagers. The third message she heard is this: “Don't stereotype us.” Just like us, our teenagers don't want to be pigeon-holed into stereotypes. For example, not all teens are anxious. Not all teens are addicted to their phones. And not all teens are entitled. If we label our kids in these ways we are setting the table for them to live into those stereotypes. As Christian parents, we need to not only recognize the unique ways in which they've been created and gifted by God, but their potential to live into God's glorious and grand design for their lives, rather than some stereotype. Parents, get to know your kids for who they are as unique individuals.

Summary In this episode of the Glass Ceilings podcast, the co-founders of the Workplace Psychological Safety Act discuss their groundbreaking bill aimed at protecting employees from psychological abuse and fostering a safe work environment. They share their personal experiences with workplace bullying and the power dynamics involved. The journey to create the act is explored, along with the key components of the legislation. The importance of psychological safety and the definition of toxicity in the workplace are also discussed. This conversation explores the fraud and abuse in toxic workplaces, the conditioning of women to stay silent, and the impact of toxic workplaces on mental health. It also discusses the double standards and stereotyping of women, the need for empathy and compassion in the workplace, and the lack of rights and protection for employees. The conversation delves into the broken rung and aggression towards women of color, the blame on targets of abuse instead of perpetrators, and the biological differences and conditioning of women. It addresses the lack of diversity and inclusion in companies, the choice between career and personal life, and the effects of toxic workplaces on mental health. The conversation also emphasizes the importance of knowing and asserting employee rights, the manipulation of FMLA and denial of benefits, and the timeline and causation of mental illness. It highlights the psychological effects of toxic workplaces, the importance of awareness and education, and the uphill battle for legislation and change. Finally, it discusses ways to support the Workplace Psychological Safety Act and find relief and hope in community.
