Privilege is something we all benefit from in some form or another. While it is irrefutable, as soon as we try to cast a light on aspects of our privilege (eg. White privilege, able-bodied, heterosexual, etc.), people rail, scream and gaslight. Perhaps it is in our wiring to look at things as a zero-sum game, however, progress as a society is dependent on us recognizing that rising tides truly do raise all ships. Critical conversations require more than just an astute command of language and exceptional listening skills, they also require three things that can inspire alignment and change: 1.Architect your unlearning by disrupting your narrative. 2.Look beyond personal responsibility and challenge systems of oppression. 3.Prioritize curiosity and interrogation over sensationalism and rhetoric. The voices in your head are loud and often the expressions and stories of scarcity, fear, doubt and bias that were formed by your environment, your family, your experiences and society. Though not always purely negative, these stories do inform our beliefs (sometimes self- limiting) which ultimately guides behavior and action; in essence keeping us stuck. In this episode, Ashley and Mark discuss. - Breaking through narratives that do not fit with your why or your ideal view for life- Challenging the “No Excuses” rhetoric- Being unapologetically intentional about your prioritiesSupport the showDon't forget to rate and leave a review! We're not wasting any time with this one. It's a little heavy, but definitely worth the listen. Progress cannot come without discomfort. So, ignoring ideas, policies and actions that create discomfort just allows more of the same to flourish. In this episode, we talk about everything from Black History Month to book bans to the murder of Tyre Nichols; cap-stoning a theme that discriminatory systems are alive and well … and that is what makes them so insidious.Support the showDon't forget to rate and leave a review! Here's a non-exhaustive list of really annoying things that are exclusionary, mean, shame-inducing, or just plain stupid: equinox not letting new members join in January the way people talk about food the way people talk about bodies all or nothing mentality the idea of excuses vs reasons the focus is all about smaller, tighter, fitter racism, white supremacy, and exclusion mean and toxic studio culturepeople not eating carbs fitness instructors, trainers, and health coaching trying to diagnose, treat and cure LITERALLY EVERYTHINGchildren & adolescents with body image issues people thinking they need workouts over therapy lack of representation This week's topics isn't pulled from one particular previous episode, but many that we've talked about through all seasons. You can't talk about fitness without talking about wellness, boundaries, fear and courage, privilege, cultural appropriation, yoga, kids in schools and the failure of PE class, body image, gender and sexuality, community…all of it. Is 'canceling' a thing we still do? What about calling out? Or calling in? Are we shaming and bullying or demanding accountability? As promised, we're diving into some of our early episodes to explore how our opinions have changed. 2020 was an incredibly charged year for many reasons, and while we aren't carrying any regrets, we acknowledge that in some cases, there's way more nuance than we previously thought. We're not letting anyone off the hook here, rather we're exploring the kinds of skills needed to create actual and lasting change. Support the showDon't forget to rate and leave a review! Questions? The parallels between our fitness spaces, corporations and our political landscape are becoming more apparent by the day. Rhetoric, divisiveness, performative allyship, and bullying are all elements at play once the motivation to "win" supersedes our espoused value system. It there where both dissonance and decision making meet. Accountability in this landscape comes in many forms and it is up to us (as leaders, instructors, community members, etc) to determine how that shows up to influence the correct outcomes. In this episode, Mark and Ashley discuss the parallels, their own journeys within the spaces and an associated call to action.Support the show
