Welcome back to the Fun of the Run podcast. After a bit of a hiatus due to my son Austin's cancer diagnosis in May 2024, I'm back with a recap of my first EVER 100 mile race...Across the Years! It was a wild ride getting here and I couldn't have done it without the help and support of so many of you. Please enjoy the raw and real perspective of what it's like to approach a 100 miler as a runner who typically finishes in last place at ultras. Spoiler alert: I DID it!!! And the belt buckle is glorious. Please visit aravaiparunning.com for more info about Across the Years event or see @aravaiparunning on IG. Welcome back! After 2 months off, I'm so thrilled to be releasing another episode! I'm deeply sad that Austin's story needs to be told at all… or rather that his life took the turn it did. This week's episode explains how my 2nd born, Austin, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on May 2, 2024 and what's been happening since then. Two graduations, a wedding, a canceled race, an impromptu 20k…and lots more. As always, thank you so much for listening and please reach out to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady with feedback or questions. Thank you!
Is it the endorphins, the runner's high? The trails, the races, the people?? Tune in to this week's episode to hear a bit about how I transitioned from roads to trails…and what I think the most beautiful thing is about running! As always, thank you so much for listening. Please send feedback to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady
Thanks for joining me for yet another episode of Fun of the Run! This week we're talking hot weather running tips, how my “mid-church-meeting” run went down…and why sometimes you just need to email the race director already! As always, thank you so much for listening and please send feedback on this episode to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram.
Prepare your ears to hear all about the awesomeness that is the Zion 100 Challenge by Milestone Events. As an ambassador for this event, I receive my entry in exchange for some posts and reels before, during and afterwards. It's an amazing opportunity to try to hit my goal of 100k!! So I thought I'd share more about it…since I'm finally allowed to! The second part of the episode is a nifty little story about my two daughters and the whirlwind trip we took to Disney with Miss Ezri. Enjoy!! As always, please share your feedback on this episode at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady Thank you for listening!!
This episode is all about the things in life that can affect our runs. Family drama, wedding plans, a shrinking household, feeling irrelevant as a person. Our bodies recognize stress…but not necessarily where that stress is coming from. And stress plays into our training as runners! I share a few more thoughts about my DNF at Lake Martin 2 weeks ago… this time from a much more coherent perspective. And I've finalized my races for the rest of 2024…Lord willing and if the creek don't rise! Please share, rate, and subscribe to Fun of the Run wherever you listen. Reach out to me with questions or comments at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Also mention in this episode deserttopeakcoaching.com, my coach Kylie Aldaz who can also be found on Instagram @desert_to_peak_coaching As always, thanks for listening!
You are in for a treat this week as I interview Heather Brubaker from central Pennsylvania. She's a Mennonite mother of 2 who just ran her second ever half marathon this past Saturday! Several months ago, she jokingly said I should have her on the podcast since we both run in long skirts…and I decided to take her up on it:) She's funny, she's genuine and I think you're going to enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it! Find Heather on Instagram @heatherbrubaker19 As always, please reach out to me with feedback on this episode at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Also mentioned in this episode: my coach Kylie Aldaz who can be reached at deserttopeakcoaching.com and @desert_to_peak_coaching on Instagram. Thanks for listening!!
In this week's episode, you get to hear all of the mind numbing details about how I traveled alone from Arizona to Alabama to toe the start line of the Lake Martin 50 in Alexander City, Alabama. Copious amounts of coffee were consumed and I even barricaded myself into my hotel room because I was afraid of being alone in a strange place. Ultimately, I ended up running more miles than I ever have before and came away with memories that will last a lifetime. From “rolling hills” to 9,999,543 water crossings, to mucky mud and a possible electrolyte imbalance… this story has lots of the good stuff. Hope you enjoy! As always, please send feedback to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Thank you for listening!
Welcome to this week's episode of Fun of the Run podcast! Join me this week as I share a couple scary, true stories for your entertainment. They're true because they either happened to me… or one of my kids! They actually have zero to do with running, but everything to do with listening to fun stuff on the run. I share a bit about why Lake Martin 50 doesn't seem as terrifying anymore…and how much fun I had volunteering at Mesquite Canyon Trail Runs this past weekend. Enjoy!!
Lake Martin 50 is 12 (TWELVE!) days away and the jitters and anxiety have reached an all-time high! Do you always get nervous before races? Has it ever felt crippling? Here are a few tips I use to help get me to the start line. Share yours at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady Thanks for listening and happy running!!
On today's episode, I discuss the seemingly unreal progress I've made since barely being able to run for 15 seconds straight back in May 2018 when I first started running. Now I'm less than 3 weeks away from my 4th ultramarathon…and my first EVER 50 mile race! This sport is full of highs and lows and I experienced a pretty crummy low spot during a recent 17 mile training run…listen in as I share how I convinced myself to keep going! I also share life struggles, mention weight loss & disordered eating ( trigger warning!) and how I'm oh, so happy to finally be in taper mode for Lake Martin 50 miler. I hope you enjoy and…as always…thank you for listening!! Reach out at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram
This episode dives into why it's so important to see yourself as the amazing runner you are… it's your body and you can run for whatever reason you want to. Some will say you're too slow, you run too much, you aren't racing enough… but what do you say to yourself??? Perspective is everything in this sport and yours can make or break your efforts to follow your dreams & chase those goals. I also share updates about my Lake Martin 50 preparation and race plans for the rest of 2024! As always please send any feedback to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. Share this podcast with someone who'd love to hear it and don't forget to rate, subscribe and review. Thank you so much for listening!
From a delayed start in the rain to dropping my banana in the porta poopy pre-race, this episode has all the best details about this year's running of Mesa Half Marathon! I won free entry for life to this race in an Instagram contest last year…and let me just say that Mesa has my heart. I just need to remind my legs of that fact because they don't love road miles like they used to! Please send feedback on this episode to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. As always, thank you for listening!
This week I chat with Kylie Aldaz, my run coach since June 2023! We talk about her approach to creating training plans, tips for transitioning from road to trails, who should and shouldn't hire a run coach, how you can use races as training runs, heart rate training…and so much more! Kylie can be reached on Instagram at @kyliekrun_az or @desert_to_peak_coaching and also at DeserttoPeakCoaching.com Please leave feedback for this episode at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or @waddellrunninglady on Instagram Enjoy, let me know what you think…and thanks for listening!
This week you get an extra long, rambling episode…and I still think I forgot to mention a few things! Coldwater was absolutely the hardest race I've done so far…and that's also what made crossing that finish line at midnight so rewarding. Join me as I tell you what it took to keep putting one foot in front of the other for 16 plus hours on the rocky, technical trails of the Estrella Mountains on a beautiful winter day in Arizona. It was an adventure worth sharing! Please go check out @aravaiparunning on IG if you run trails…you might just find yourself joining me for a run in the desert one of these days! Shoutout to my coach Kylie Aldaz…and to every single one of you who shared a kind word or message before, during or after my race. Ultramarathon #3 is in the books!!! As always, thank you SO much for listening! Let me know what you think about this week's episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or by messaging me on IG. @waddellrunninglady
It finally happened! I finally convinced my husband, Dustin, to be a guest on Fun of the Run! I'll be the first to admit that this probably isn't the most cohesive interview you've ever heard. My questions and topics are kind of all over the place, but I had to strike while the iron was hot…before he changed his mind. :) We talk a little about his running experiences, his reaction to me becoming a runner, why he has a love/ hate relationship with the fact that I'm obsessed with running ultras and lots of other fun stuff. Hope you enjoy! As always, please let me know what you think of today's episode by emailing me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Thank you so much for listening! Shoutout to @dustinschroff for being a guest on this week's show.
*Trigger Warning: Miscarriage, weight loss/gain and the loss of a loved one are mentioned in this episode. Listener discretion is advised.*Join me as I share my very personal story of weight gain and loss, miscarriage, finally doing something for ME, and how that led me to the conclusion that the only one who truly sees me as “not good enough” is myself. I touch a bit on my duties as a medal distributor at the Buckeye Marathon this past weekend. You'll also hear the story of the Starfish. It's a good one. As always, thank you so much for listening. It makes my heart so happy. Reach out to me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram.

Welcome to this week's episode where I tell you what it was like to volunteer at an elite level track invitational while the Fiesta Bowl Parade was going by! Those runners can fly, let me tell you! I was a little bit out of my element because I'm slow…but it was eye opening & so fun meeting new friends & earning race credits. The tamale battle is taking place on Christmas Eve…when my red chile pork tamales will face off with my son-in-law's mom's authentic treats. Thanks for listening!! Reach out at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady
When did I realize I was a “slow” runner? When I first started running in 2018, I didn't even know pace was a thing. I just wanted to be able to cross the finish line of my first 5k! You've heard it a gazillion times, but your pace honestly is the least interesting thing about you as a person. Enjoy this week's episode! Reach out at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram and let me know what you think of this week's show! As always, thanks for listening!
Yes, I said it. And yes, I'm talking (mostly) about new-ish runners in this episode. If your bestie jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too?? Exactly!! You wouldn't. Just because “everyone” is running a marathon or an ultra or a 100 miler or running shirtless or picking their nose or whatever…doesn't mean you have to do it, too. This is YOUR story to write… not someone else's. I hope you enjoy…and THANK YOU for listening! Please, please send feedback to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. I read every message! Check out @desert_to_peak_coaching on IG ( that's my coach!)
It's been 2 weeks since the last episode of Fun of the Run…and I have so much to talk about! Since running Pass Mountain 50k, I've had 2 recent Instagram reels reach over 2 million views! Sounds great, right? Not so fast; with the good comes the ugly sometimes. I'm going to dive into some of the comments I received from a few meanie heads as well as some potentially patronizing ones that just drove me a little batty. Hope you enjoy. Please let me know what you think of this episode by messaging me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram or email me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com. Thanks for listening!!
It's so amazing to finally say I ran Pass Mountain…and finished the thing!! It seems like all of 2023 has been leading up to this race. It was incredibly hard, but it was made so much better by having my IG friend Chris Morrison ( @chrismorrison_runs) along to pace me through the entire thing! It took me all day, but tears were had, finish lines were crossed and dreams were sufficiently chased…and fulfilled. Enjoy this disjointed recap:) And please let me know what you think! DM me on IG @waddellrunninglady or email me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com. Thank you for listening!!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be a Ragnarian? That's such a funny name. This past weekend I was part of an 8 person relay team and we ran a total of 120 miles in 30 hours! Always one runner out on the course. This episode involves porta poopies, surf & turf…and wet socks. Hope you enjoy!! As always, let me know what you think of this episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Thank you for listening!!
This week's episode is real talk about my longest long run EVER…and how it took me longer to run 20 miles than most people spend at work on a daily basis! I had help from Brittany @sunrisetrailscoaching in planning a great route and my coach @kyliekrun_az was supportive and knowledgeable, as always. I also mention @trucoachlisa and Dawn @wyld_knowledge at the end of this show. So many amazing people are in my corner as I gear up for Ultra #2!! Thank you for listening! Please send feedback or questions to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram!
Welcome to this week's episode! As I get ready for my first ever 20 mile training run, I thought it'd be fun to talk about all the ways I psyche myself up for those extra long solo adventures! I also discuss @runstrongrun ‘s recent reel on Instagram where she responds to a troll who tells her that a 6 hour marathon requires zero training…wait til you hear how she responds. It's good. As always, thank you so much for listening. I value your feedback. Please reach out at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. Check out @runstrongrun & give her a follow if you aren't already…and I always want to shout out my run coach Kylie at www.deserttopeakcoaching.com Enjoy!!
What a pleasure to interview @yes.she_runs! Jo Beth has been running for many years and is getting ready to tackle her first ever ultramarathon on November 18!! Listen as she talks about being told she was “okay for a big girl” then told she was at the wrong start line based on appearance only. Then, hear how she was inspired by helping to coach a local girls cross country team. We also talk about how back of the back runners are here to stay…and races need to step up! Jo Beth is the sweetest and I hope you enjoy listening to this interview. And go give her a follow! As always thank you for listening. Please send feedback on this episode to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. Check out @punkrockultras if you're interested in the ultra Jo Beth references in this episode.
Hearing that the race was over was such a disheartening moment during my 2022 Chicago Marathon experience. Those runners who are truly at the back of the pack face challenges faster runners may not ever even consider. It takes a special kind of determination to keep going when you're told to move to the sidewalk and when mileage markers, aid stations and most of the cheering crowd are gone. What can we as the running community do to make races less intimidating for slower runners? Please share your feedback with me by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. I truly value your feedback. As always, thanks for listening!!
This week's episode is honestly a little bit of a whole lotta running stuff! I discuss my 2 year plan for running a hundred mile race, why I don't care about Boston, how I almost volunteered at Saddles100, and I even talk a little bit about Grandmasters Ultras. There's a pep talk thrown in there towards the end, too! This episode was originally going to be an interview with Jo Beth Hoke @yes.she_runs but technical difficulties caused me to lisp hilariously through the episode. I've included a snippet for your listening pleasure! As always, thank you for listening. Please let me know what you think of today's episode by leaving a review, messaging me on IG @waddellrunninglady or by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com. Also mentioned in this episode www.deserttopeakcoaching.com
This is the last race in the Insomniac Night Series put on by Aravaipa Running. Located in the beautiful McDowell Mountains of Arizona, this was an event to remember. A last place finish, about a million potty breaks next to prickly desert bushes, a tarantula & scary trucker stories all made this 25k one for the books. I hope you enjoy this honest recap of my race! As always, thank you so much for listening. Please let me know what you think of this episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or by messaging me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. Mentioned in this episode: Aravaipa Running www.aravaiparunning.com Like, subscribe, follow, download… it all helps! Thank you.
I saw a recent social media post that just riled me up. In this episode we discuss whether you can race “too much” and whether the fact that you tell others you're racing makes you a toxic runner :) Over here, running…and racing…is all about having fun and I hope you enjoy my take on the subject. As always, I'm not an expert in anything except my own experiences. Thank you so much for listening! Let me know what you think of this week's episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or by messaging me on IG @waddellrunninglady
We made it to 30 episodes!! All thanks to you! Thank you so much for listening & I hope you enjoy today's episode where I go into great detail about the things that made Saturday's long run difficult. I also talk about where I was on 9/11 & what I did yesterday to remember the day. My son Gatlin joins me in studio and I read a listener's entertaining story about her fiasco of a first 5k! Enjoy! Mentioned in this episode are my coach @kyliekrun_az who offers one on one run coaching to runners of all abilities at www.desertpeakcoaching.com and @trucoachlisa who offers group run coaching to women 50+ at www.therunninguniversity.com Please share your feedback on today's episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. The definition of mishmash is a “confused mixture” and that's exactly what this episode is! I'm discussing all of the things that have been “running” through my head this past week. I talk about shoes, which trails to run, what races I have coming up, how untalented I am as a runner… the list goes on. I hope there's something here that resonates with you! As always, thank you for listening and please share your feedback on today's episode by either giving me a review on the app of your choice or by emailing me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com. I can also be reached via DM on Instagram @waddellrunninglady
You're only crazy if you think you are…so that must mean I'm nuts. This episode was originally intended to explore the ins and outs of volunteering at an aid station during a fixed time event called Jackrabbit Jubilee in Buckeye, Arizona. When I saw the venue, I had serious FOMO and signed up for the 6 hour event starting an hour after my volunteer shift ended at midnight! Spontaneous decisions can be delightful, so I hope you'll enjoy listening to how it all played out! As always…thank you for listening! Please let me know how you enjoyed this episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady Check out all of the events Aravaipa Running has to offer by visiting aravaiparunning.com Also mentioned in this episode https://www.deserttopeakcoaching.com
I'm deep diving into my Vertigo Night Runs 20k race recap! Gorgeous, cloudy weather in the beautiful desert of Arizona made for perfect racing conditions. My finish time was not what I wanted… in fact I was dead last in my respective race distance…again! Hear how I talked myself out of a DNF after the first 10k loop and how the words of a wise running friend made the sun shine bright again in my corner of the running world. Thanks again for listening! Please let me know what you think of this episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram
I hope you're ready to hear the story of my mom's penchant for eating her feelings, my dad's stint in prison and how both of those things eventually contributed to me becoming a runner… in a roundabout way! You guessed it… it's Story Time with Michelle and as always,.. thank you for listening! Please let me know what you think of today's episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or by DMing me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. I love hearing from you!
It isn't always easy to juggle running, life, crazy weather and people who want us to spend time with them. But we do the best we can! This episode shares some of what that juggling act looks like from my perspective. I touch on a couple of recent heat-related deaths in Maricopa County, Arizona and how I've recently been dealing with summer training. I also share stories and probably too many details about the Schroff family and our attempts to get my daughter...and her clunker of a vehicle...officially on the road as a brand new licensed driver. Enjoy! Please let me know what you think about this episode by emailing funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or by DMing me on Instagram @waddellrunninglady. I'd love to hear how YOU juggle your crazy schedule! Referenced in this episode @desert_to_peak_coaching Thanks for listening!
I didn't have coffee before I recorded this shorter-than-usual episode. No breakfast, either. Be forewarned that my brain doesn't function too well under these conditions. This one's a veritable smorgasbord of randomness...why I love Sally McRae and want to be like her when I grow up...why people have no business making fun of ultramarathoners...how I want to run a hundred miler someday! I even state the elevations of Phoenix and Flagsatff, AZ for no apparent reason. I hope there's some value (or at least some entertainment) in this episode. Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for listening! Have you ever run a virtual race? Well, I've run a few and some were much better experiences than others! Racing on your own without crowd support or race day adrenaline is a huge feat in and of itself. I hope there's something in this episode just for you! As always, thank you for listening. Please rate, like, and follow this podcast… it really helps! Have you ever gotten to the start line of a race and felt like you don't belong there? How about seeing pics of yourself running & thinking , “ I don't even look like I'm running”? There are so many reasons why we as runners might not feel like we're “good enough”. But I'm here to tell you that you are. I am. We all are. I hope there's something helpful in this episode just for you. As always, thanks for listening…and remember I'm not an expert in anything except my own experiences which I share with you in each episode! In this week's episode, I share all of the tips/tricks I know for making your sweltering summer miles more bearable! Joining me in studio ( my walk-in closet) is my 13 yr old son, Gatlin, who knows a thing or two about summer heat. I also give a few examples of times I've experienced some type of heat sickness over the past couple of years & how that makes me more careful in the triple digit AZ temps. Lastly, I share a glimpse of last weekend's group trail run with Lisa Pozzoni ( @trucoachlisa on IG) and her #trutribeteam . I hope you enjoy and as always…thanks for listening! In this episode, I'm pretty much just blowing off steam. I talk about why I run alone 99% of the time & a few of the reasons that notorious, 3-letter F word bothers me so much! In this episode, you'll hear the fun...and enlightening...conversation I had with Health and Wellness Coach, Victoria Buker. Not only does she teach spin, have two small children and coach runners, but she's also a marathoner in her own right. And she's got stories! I hope you enjoy today's episode...thanks for listening! In this episode, I hop on a call with Marie Warren( @running.mom.3)! She's an ultra runner who lives in Alabama with her pastor husband and she even homeschools her 3 kids! We talk about why she started running, how she juggles it all & even hear her advice for beginner runners. It was so much fun just getting to discuss all things running with someone who gets where I'm coming from! I hope you enjoy this episode and as always…thank you so much for listening! Please type out your funny/spooky/sketchy stories and send them to funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com. If you'd rather hop on a call with me & be recorded, DM me at @waddellrunninglady on Instagram & we'll set up a time to talk!
This episode veers away from my typical blathering style. Here I interview my two youngest kids, 13 & 17, and ask them to tell me the truth about me & my running. Are there any positives? There is definitely a negative…according to them! As always, you can reach me at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. And thanks for listening!! P.S. Please email or DM me your scary, funny or sketchy running stories. If you want to tell it in your own words for all to hear, DM me and we'll set up a convenient time to record. Thank you!
In this episode, I share my own personal experience working with run4prs.co and Coach Ben, including how he helped make me into the runner I am today. I dive into some of the reasons why I recently switched to working with Kylie Aldaz of Desert-to-Peak Coaching. I highly recommend checking out both @run4prs and @desert_to_peak_coaching on Instagram. They're amazing!! As always, thank you for listening and let me know your thoughts on this episode! In this episode, I share the nitty gritty about running my first night trail race with the Aravaipa Running Insomniac Race Series! It was dark, it was spooky...it was epic! I was last this time, but I couldn't be any prouder! I hope you find this episode useful, as well as entertaining. As always, thanks for listening! This episode is a mixture of lots of things I never even considered I'd need to know when I first started running. Everything from not needing to race in order to be a runner...to finally understanding no one would die if I skipped a run! I even talk about what it was like running a virtual full marathon in June on a sunny 115 degree day in beautiful Arizona (not recommended, by the way)! I still don't know everything there is to know about running...but I hope this is an entertaining and useful listen for you.
