Pixies (there's no the 'The') started their ascent into alt-rock wonderhood with Surfer Rosa. No album from the 1980s had a greater influence on the rock sound of the 1990s than this record. Good start Pixies. Nice work.
The Move: “Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited” (Shazam, 1970)The Rolling Stones: “Midnight Rambler – Live 1969” (Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, 1970)David Bowie: “All the Madmen” (The Man Who Sold the World, 1970)Porter Wagoner: “The Rubber Room” (Single, 1971)Don McLean: “Vincent” (American Pie, 1971)Pink Floyd: “Brain Damage” (Dark Side of the Moon, 1973)Shu-Bi-Dua: “Små blå mænd” (Shu-Bi-Dua, 1974)Suicide: ”Frankie Teardrop” (Suicide, 1977)Joy Division: ”She's Lost Control” (Unknown Pleasures, 1979)Roky Erickson and the Aliens: “I Think of Demons” (Roky Erickson and the Aliens, 1980)Pixies: “Where Is My Mind?” (Surfer Rosa, 1988)Nirvana: “Lithium” (Nevermind, 1991)Lisa Germano: “…a psychopath” (Geek the Girl, 1994)Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: “Song of Joy” (Murder Ballads, 1996)Stina Nordenstam: “People Are Strange” (People Are Strange, 1998)Sia: “Breathe Me” (Color the Small One, 2004)Rihanna: “Disturbia” (Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded, 2008)Bebe Rexha: “I'm Gonna Show You Crazy” (I Don't Wanna Grow Up-EP, 2015)Melanie Martinez: “Mad Hatter” (Cry Baby, 2015)
36 years after Pixies released “Surfer Rosa,” indie rock icon Kim Deal has come out with her first solo record, “Nobody Loves You More.” We discuss it in-depth in episode #222 of “For the Record.”
John is joined by Pixies, Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis), and producer Tom Dalgety, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band's latest album ‘The Night The Zombies Came'. The Pixies are an American alternative rock band widely acclaimed as one of the pioneers of the late 1980s rock movement. Their first three albums - Surfer Rosa (1988), Dolittle (1989) and Bossanova (1990) - defined an era as well as earning the band much critical success. The Pixies have influenced numerous prominent artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Strokes and Weezer. Since re-forming in 2004, they have maintained a steady creative output, working closely with producer Tom Dalgety. Catching up at Strongroom Studios, Charles and Tom share stories from their album writing process, including the last minute track that Tom snuck onto the record, the inspiration that came from trips around the English countryside, and the creative results of Charles's temper tantrums (which included his songwriting notebook ending up on the studio roof!). Tracks discussed: The Vegas Suite, I Hear You Mary, Jane (The Night the Zombies Came) TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. In Our Headphones will be back next week with song recommendations from Lace Cadence, host of The Continent. But this week, we'd like to share another KEXP podcast: The Cobain 50, which explores the famous list Kurt Cobain left behind in one of his journals naming his Top 50 albums. Hosted by Martin Douglas and Dusty Henry, the series digs into a different album from the list each week, discussing its influence on Nirvana and the bigger themes still resonating today. On this episode, Dusty Henry dives into 'Surfer Rosa' by The Pixies. It's arguably the most influential "alternative music" album of the 90s — not just for Nirvana, but artists worldwide. Surfer Rosa was Nevermind before Nevermind. Subscribe to The Cobain 50 wherever you get your podcasts. This week, Greg and Jay dive into the legacy of Steve Albini, the legendary recording engineer (which he preferred over the title “producer”) and musician who unexpectedly left us at 61. He was the audio engineer for Pixies 1988 Surfer Rosa, which was incredibly influential on alternative rock and grunge. His refusal of the title “producer” included refusal to accept royalties on the hundreds of artists he went on to record in his lifetime. He just wanted to be hired to record the best version of a band's sound as was possible. We discuss his body of work and legacy and say goodbye, too soon. Plus, what is a song? Nick tries to lighten the mood with a recap of a legal analysis that asks that very question. The article, written by Ben Sisario at the NY Times, walks back through some more famous copyright cases from years past. How could that not lighten the mood?Songs:Song: Pixies - “Where Is My Mind”The Jesus Lizard - “Mouth Breather”Black Midi “953 (Live at Electrical Audio)”

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rockshow Episode 190 Pixies The Pixies, an American alternative rock band, formed in Boston in 1986. Comprising Black Francis (vocals, guitar), Joey Santiago (guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals), and David Lovering (drums), they gained prominence with their unique blend of punk, surf rock, and surreal lyrics. Albums like “Surfer Rosa” (1988) and “Doolittle” (1989) solidified their influence on the '80s and '90s alternative scene. Internal tensions led to a hiatus in 1993, but they reunited in 2004, continuing to release music and tour. The Pixies remain revered for their impact on alternative music. https://www.pixiesmusic.com/ https://youtube.com/@PixiesOfficialTV?si=kdUSQgRLv0dw8zrf https://open.spotify.com/artist/6zvul52xwTWzilBZl6BUbT?autoplay=true&source_application=google_assistant https://x.com/pixies?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg https://instagram.com/pixiesofficial?igshid=NzZlODBkYWE4Ng== https://m.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100044210030519 https://pixiesmerch.com/ https://music.apple.com/us/artist/pixies/2730151 #Pixies #AlternativeRock #SurferRosa #Doolittle #IndieMusic #RockLegends #BlackFrancis #JoeySantiago #KimDeal #DavidLovering #90sMusic #BostonBands #Influence #CultClassic #MusicHistory #IndieRock Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup

For the 35th anniversary of Pixies' landmark debut album, SURFER ROSA, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Charles Thompson and Joey Santiago bonded as suitemates at the University of Massachusettes Amherst, they decided to form a band. By putting an ad in the Boston Phoenix for “a female vocalist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary,” they connected with Kim Deal, who was the only one to answer their ad. Deal's husband, John Murphy, introduced them to drummer David Lovering and the Pixies lineup was solidified. As they began playing around Boston, producer Gary Smith offered to record a demo for them at Fort Apache Studios. After Ivo Watts-Russell of the label 4AD heard the tapes, he signed them to a contract and they released some of the demo recordings as an EP called Come On Pilgrim. They turned their attention to recording a full-length album and Watts-Russell suggested a young engineer named Steve Albini. Albini traveled to Boston to meet the band and they began recording the next day at a studio called Q Division. In this episode, guitarist Joey Santiago describes the early connection he shared with Charles Thompson and how SURFER ROSA solidified the band's sound and was an honest depiction of who they were. David Lovering talks about his approach to simplifying his drumming and why SURFER ROSA remains his personal favorite Pixies album. Engineer, Steve Albini reflects on how this record marked the first time he worked with a band he didn't know and how he set out to prove his value by making unique suggestions and how that impacted the finished product. From Charles and Kim's contrasting vocal styles to their trademark loud quiet loud dynamics to the benefits of metal picks and recording in a tiled bathroom to the uniquely dark subject matter of the lyrics to the recorded sounds of the session underway, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Pixies' "Vamos" (1988). Today we talk about what happens behind the scenes for the making of an album. It's Remfry's pick for the Classic Albums series and we're back to doubles due to lockdown, so Remfry's decided to cover alt. rock Gods Pixies. The Boston indie legends recorded Surfer Rosa in November 1987, just 11 months after Black Francis and Joey Santiago dropped out of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst to form the band. Bone Machine, River Euphrates, Gigantic and Where is my Mind? are all still beloved songs from the band's back catalogue. Steve and Remfry dive into the making of the record and the band's tumultuous relationship with producer Steve Albini. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
"We can discern in the auditory aspect of several verbs, used in their normal way, the acoustic-magic stress indicative of the extent to which power is expressed, not in a palpable but rather an auditory manner and appeals to the incomprehensible and prerational in us: to belong, to obey; and, to submit. These words and what they convey are always subordinated to power that we ascribe to things, events, or human beings, whether as possessions, authoritarian beliefs, or sexuality; and they are always connected to the loss of ego and responsibility. It is not the sun-related eye but the labyrinthine ear that is the magic organ; the sun represents diurnal brightness, whereas the labyrinth represents the cave-like nocturnal darkness of dormant consciousness.” - Jean Gebser, Ever Present Origin "...you can feel the sound he records..." -Polly Jean Harvey While INXS was Kicking on the MTV awards in 1987, Big Black, Steve Albini's former band, put out an album called "Songs About Fucking." I was 11. Steve Albini is the lead singer and guitarist of Shellac and recording engineer for some of my favorite albums of all-time, including PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me", Nirvana's "In Utero" and the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa." I played the first song on Surfer Rosa, “Bone Machine,” loud with my children nearby recently and my 10 year-old daughter commented “it felt like her ears were bleeding.” “Yes! That's it! You get it.” Steven's work speaks for itself. Thank you Steven for sitting down with a fan and talking music. I hope the listener will experience the same joy I had recording this conversation with the one and only: Steve Albini. P.S.: Stream "Dude Incredible,” by Shellac.

Today, I'm having a GAS with Steve Albini, the founder of Electrical Audio recording studios in Chicago. Steve is most widely known for having engineered In Utero, by Nirvana; Surfer Rosa by Pixies; Rid of Me by PJ Harvey and The Weirdness by The Stooges, but has worked on literally thousands of albums besides these in his extensive career. Steve is also notorious for his stance on analogue recording techniques, and is a vocal critic of digital media, citing its inevitable medium-term obsolescence as a fatal flaw which has never been properly addressed. © GAS Music 2020 www.gasismusic.co.uk
"Det var et rimelig voldsomt, bebumset teenageoprør." Dragut Lugalzagosi er forsanger i rockbandet The Great Dictators (https://www.facebook.com/thegreatdictators/).

Episode 38 is a conversation with Kevin Grant, this first episode of 2019 is a long episode and it covers a lot of ground. Kevin talks about Fall River, MA where he is from, what it was like growing up there. We talk at length about his experiences singing in a number of bands including The Hidden, Gaskill and his latest project Wire Lines. Kevin has some fascinating ideas about music and what role it takes in his life as well as to people in general. This episode is named after The Pixies song Break My Body, Kevin references the record that song came from (Surfer Rosa) and talks about his experience recording music with Steve Albini. Kevin is an intense and intelligent guy, his ideas on hardcore music and what it means to him are very much in line with myself as well as most of the guests I've had on, he was the perfect guest for this podcast.
In this week's episode of LPOOL, David and Ryan get the band back together after a trying episode last week. Here they're discussing Ryan's latest pick: the debut album Surfer Rosa, from indie rock pioneers Pixies. Ryan hopes David finds some things to enjoy in the raw energy and disturbing imagery in the lyrics. David dreams about a one hour loop of Kim Deal's haunting vocal intro from "Where is My Mind"...and then he made one! Check it out on our website!
Steve’s absolutely furious this week because he’s got a cold and is surely just a cough away from certain death. Remfry feels fine (thanks for asking) although he is slightly perturbed by the colour of Steve’s toilet seat. Despite these debilitating circumstances, neither are discouraged from talking about some of the most exciting new music in the alternative sphere, which this week takes the form of reviews of albums by Sick of it All, Toska and Sylvaine. Remfry headed across to Oxford to see Idles continue to take the country by storm, whilst Steve ventured to London’s Roundhouse to see Pixies play Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim in full and they both had fairly different views of Turnstile’s show at House of Vans. Elsewhere new songs from Slipknot and While She Sleeps are discussed and in place of trade-off this week, Steve and Remfry pick their Top Five albums from Epitaph, the legendary American independent record label setup by Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz in 1980. In this episode, I speak with Anglo-Scandinavian philosopher of mind Peter Sjöstedt-H on psychedelics, panpsychism, and philosophy. Peter and I discuss the resurgence of interest in psychedelics in popular culture regarding the profound, and absolutely vital, therapeutic value these substances can provide for individuals suffering from trauma and addiction. The therapeutic value of these substances is only the "tip of the iceberg" when it comes to the value these substances hold for humanity’s philosophical exploration into the nature of the mind and mind's relationship with reality. Peter elaborates on the inherent value psychedelics hold in rigorous philosophical explorations into the nature of the mind, and through the proper use of these substances, we can perceive through the severe limitations of the materialist worldview, or as Peter defines it, physicalism - “the thesis that everything is physical, or as contemporary philosophers sometimes put it, that everything supervenes on the physical.”* We discuss the validity of the philosophical concept panpsychism - “the view that mentality is fundamental and ubiquitous in the natural world”** - and that through the use of psychedelics, one can begin to understand that, in fact, the mind is fundamentally ubiquitous in all things. In order to develop a deeper understanding of consciousness, we need to apply a psychedelic approach to philosophical explorations of these subjects. We also get into Peter’s influences research interests, in particular philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead’s “Philosophy of Organism,” and how psychedelic explorations into the work of Whitehead, as well as works of Plato, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Arthur Schopenhauer, can yield important insights into the subjects mentioned above. Overall, this is a wide-ranging conversation that covers a variety of subjects that relate to the psychedelic experience and the philosophy of mind. Peter Sjöstedt-H is an Anglo-Scandinavian philosopher of mind with a focus on psychedelics, panpsychism, who specializes in the thought of Whitehead, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. Peter received a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in Continental Philosophy from the University of Warwick, where he was awarded a first-class distinction for his dissertation on Kant and Schelling in relation to ‘intellectual intuition’. He subsequently became a Philosophy Lecturer in London for six years but is now engaged in his PhD at Exeter University where he also teaches philosophy modules and writing skills. Peter is the author of ‘Noumenautics’ - a collection of essays on metaphysics, meta-ethics, and psychedelics. Peter is also an inspiration behind the inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero, Karnak. * Source: https://stanford.io/2KvdTWl ** Source: https://stanford.io/2KjuwVA Episode Notes: - Learn more about Peter’s fascinating work - including his essays, interviews, and upcoming events - at his website: http://www.philosopher.eu - Learn more and purchase Peter's book ‘Noumenautics’ - a collection of essays on metaphysics, meta-ethics, and psychedelics - at the Psychedelic Press website: http://bit.ly/2MKHwAy - Follow Peter’s Facebook page ‘Ontologistics’ here: https://www.facebook.com/ontologistics - Follow Peter on Twitter: https://twitter.com/PeterSjostedtH - The song featured in this episode is “Where Is My Mind” by The Pixies from the album Surfer Rosa. - Podcast website: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com - Support the podcast: PATREON: www.patreon.com/lastborninthewilderness ONE-TIME DONATION: www.ko-fi.com/lastborninthewilderness - Follow and listen: SOUNDCLOUD: www.soundcloud.com/lastborninthewilderness ITUNES: www.goo.gl/Fvy4ca GOOGLE PLAY: https://goo.gl/wYgMQc STITCHER: https://goo.gl/eeUBfS - Social Media: FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/lastborninthewildernesspodcast TWITTER: www.twitter.com/lastbornpodcast INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/patterns.of.behavior

If you loved loud (/quiet/loud) rock with big guitars and off-kilter pop hooks for miles in the 80s, this was probably your favourite band. If you did so in the 90s, this was your favourite band's favourite band. We go though this gem meticulously and separate the cookies from the pizza (yeah, that'll make more sense if you actually listen to it). We laugh a lot in this one. Sometimes in Spanish.
Steve Albini had his hands and fingers on the mixing board for some of the greatest albums ever, like Nirvana's In Utero and the Pixies' Surfer Rosa. But don't call Steve a producer. He hates that. As Steve tells Marc, he sees himself as an audio engineer and a musician with his own bands, not as someone who should take credit for other people's albums. For this week's installment of the show, my pal (and the pen behind the awesome Brooklyn Magazine column "Bands with Pans") Beca Grimm invited me into her possibly haunted Greenpoint apartment to talk about the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa". It's an album that most people have heard at least once in their lives, or maybe they'll just recognize one of the songs from being in Fight Club. I had a good time recording this episode, and Beca even hooked me up with a bottle of homemade wine after we finished recording!

A few weeks ago, NPR asked us to come up with a list of definitive Noise Pop (the genre) songs for their website, NPR.org. It was a tall order and a fascinating challenge for us, and of course, we eagerly accepted. With tunes from the early '70s to modern songs released just a few months ago on our radar, we studiously dove into the decades to find the top 100. We sorted them chronologically in order to to show the evolution of the sound. The full list will post on NPR later this month, but for now we've assembled a teaser podcast episode that chronicles the genre's migration over the past 4 decades. Yesterday, I shopped in this very stodgy gift shop in the swanky new section of the Natick Mall, errr, I mean The Natick Collection. (Hoity-toity enough for ya?) This is the kind of store that usually features music like Yanni or Enya or something else from that blah, new-agey, mind-numbing genre in their overhead play, so you'll forget about why you're there and buy an overpriced Willow Tree angel. You know the store. It's the one with the sales lady that wears prissy sweater sets, reeks of Shalimar, and has sports bifocals hanging from a chain around her neck. I strolled in to look at greeting cards, and I was astonished to hear actual rock music. I had to look around! Am I in the right place? I could swear that's Sonic Youth I'm hearing. This, of course, shook my world. What if I walked into Hot Topic and heard Barry Manilow singing Can't Smile Without You? What if I headed into Gymboree and heard Slipknot blaring while mommies shopped for outfits for their kidlets? That would happen in bizarro world! Perhaps the gift store clerk flipped the wrong switch and had no idea how to rectify the situation, or maybe she was just a rock and roller under all of the mall sales lady clothing. Who knows. But hearing Teen Age Riot while I skimmed through the birthday cards was a rare treat that I'm certain will not reoccur. This leads to the flashback. I was tempted to play that great Sonic Youth song, but during the drive home, I started thinking about when it was released. 1988. Lots of good, lasting tunage came out that year, including Tracy Chapman's debut, Fisherman's Blues from The Waterboys, and The Traveling Wilburys' Vol. 1. I think the Pixies' released Surfer Rosa in 88, as well. I'm know I'm leaving out some choice releases, but I had to focus on the traffic and avoid the Massholes surrounding me, waiting to cut me off at any moment. Today's flashback is from The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1. I've chosen a couple of deep cuts from the album, Tweeter and the Monkey Man, featuring Dylan on lead vocal and a definite Jeff Lynne production sound, and Not Alone Any More, the Roy Orbison showcase song.
