Dust off your pagers and grab a Surge soda! This week, Dave and Rob are hopping into the time machine and dialing the coordinates to June 9th, 1996. The box office was dominated by Mission: Impossible, the Macarena was slowly taking over the planet, and the Billboard Hot 100 was a wild mix of legendary hip-hop, R&B royalty, alt-rock, and powerhouse vocalists What makes this specific week so legendary is the sheer, whiplash-inducing sonic contrast sharing real estate on the charts. It was a bizarre and beautiful era where the mournful, rapid-fire hip-hop harmonies of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and 2Pac's aggressive West Coast swagger sat side-by-side with the pristine, sweeping adult contemporary ballads of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Throw in the raw acoustic storytelling of Tracy Chapman, Alanis Morissette's alt-rock bite, and a rising, inescapable bilingual novelty dance craze like the Macarena, and you get a snapshot of a musical landscape that was wildly fragmented yet universally massive Chapters 00:00 - Pagers, Surge, and the Macarena: Welcome to 1996 2:10 - Remembering Peabo Bryson and Our Influencer Status 4:07 - Graduating into 1996's Wildly Fragmented Music Scene 9:22 - Diving Into the Billboard Hot 100: Cuts & Honorable Mentions 13:15 - "5:00" by Nonchalant: A 90s Hip Hop Gem 18:36 - "Sweet Dreams" by La Bouche: Eurodance 1996 22:11 - "Tres Delinquentes": West Coast Latin Rap's Breakthrough 26:37 - "Old Man and Me": Hootie's Underrated Sophomore Album 30:25 - Kicking Off our Best of 1996 Billboard Top 10 31:27 - Everclear's "Heart Spark Dollar Sign": An Interracial Love Story 35:00 - Coolio's "1,2,3,4": A Fun Summer Jam 38:57 - Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars": Mid-90s Post Grunge Classic 42:36 - Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains": A 90s Rock Anthem 46:25 - Lenny Kravitz's "Can't Get You Off My Mind" 49:52 - Goo Goo Dolls "Name": A Chart-Topping Personal Ballad 57:13 - Brandy's "Sittin' Up In My Room": A Teen Infatuation Anthem 59:50 - The Tony Rich Project's "Nobody Knows": Country Crossover Hit 1:05:12 - Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason": A Bluesy Career Revitalizer 1:08:04 - Smashing Pumpkins' "1979": The Quintessential Gen X Song 1:10:08 - Snapple, Clearly Canadian, and Our 1996 Billboard List Review Playlists: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IEysWlUdIzxLhnrSmu1bx?si=DVgK8cegRq-FqwVtoZGlqQ Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/billboard-hot-100-june-9th-1996/pl.u-76oN9NpFNz2Y05?ls Amazon: Click HERE to access the Amazon playlist for this episode https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1996-06-15/ Connect with Totally 80s and 90s Recall Website: https://bleav.com/shows/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/ Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com Voicemail: (509) 426-4542 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Overcoming Loss & Fighting Epilepsy With Music | Michael Gomoll Joey Gomoll died in 2010, just shy of his 5th birthday, after battling a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet's Syndrome his entire life. Upon his passing, his family started a charity called Joey's Song to help raise money to fund research grants focused on finding treatments and cures for rare, intractable, pediatric epilepsies. In the 15-plus years since Joey's death, Joey's Song has grown from a few acoustic guitars in a sports bar to a multi-day concert series featuring Grammy winners and Rock n Roll Hall of Famers (Members of bands like Cheap Trick, Guns N Roses, The Go-Go's, The Bangles, Tears For Fears, Garbage, Portugal. The Man, Goo Goo Dolls, Eve 6, Everclear and many more). This amazing collection of musicians gathers every January in Madison, WI. They volunteer their time and talent, and form a series of supergroups throughout the weekend for a one-of-a-kind concert event.Since its inception, Joey's Song has been a part of over $ 2 million raised and has had over 10,000 attendees in just the last two years.Links:https://www.joeyssong.org/https://www.instagram.com/joeyssongTagspodcast for creatives, creative podcast, podcast creator interviews, professional podcast, creative podcasts, podcast host interviews, creative podcast ideas,Child Loss, epilepsy,Event Management,Family,Fundraising,Live Music,Music Festivals,Music Interviews,Music Production,Overcoming AdversitySupport PEG by checking out our Sponsors:Download and use Newsly for free now from www.newsly.me or from the link in the description, and use promo code “GHOST” and receive a 1-month free premium subscription. The best tool for getting podcast guests:https://podmatch.com/signup/phantomelectricghostSubscribe to our Instagram for exclusive content:https://www.instagram.com/expansive_sound_experiments/Subscribe to our YouTube https://youtube.com/@phantomelectricghost?si=rEyT56WQvDsAoRprRSShttps://anchor.fm/s/3b31908/podcast/rssSubstackhttps://substack.com/@phantomelectricghost?utm_source=edit-profile-page

In their song, Everything to Everyone, the band Everclear gave voice to every IT team on the planet who struggles to keep the lights on due to the ever-rising tide of technical debt and SaaS licensing. "The hand you hold is the hand that holds you down!" Of course, they were likely not explicitly referencing the IT landscape, but the mantra surely sticks. Today, at long last, there is a ray of hope for these battle-tested administrators, in the form of Deterministic Enterprise-native AI that promises more deterministic results. While GenAI grabs all the headlines for writing everything from press releases to poetry, a handful of enterprise engineers have been busy crafting a hybrid solution that fuses the generative power of LLMs, with the determinism of enterprise systems of record. Register for this DM Radio to learn how today's innovators are building solutions that are agile and bulletproof. Host Eric Kavanagh will be joined by industry legend Sam Yen, former Chief Innovation Officer for JPMorganChance, now the GM for Everest Systems. He'll show how hybrid AI systems are eclipsing legacy architectures, and solving technical debt once and for all.

People sometimes* ask, "how do you kill a golden goose?" Well, if you are the organizers of central texas' annual music/film/tech trade fair, there's more than one way to exterminate your gold-egg laying friend (besides, you know, drowning, strangulation, forgetting to buy goose chow). The gradual decimation of the musical portion was a start, but the less gradual cozying up to the military industry, playing footsie with a.i. purveyors-of-death, harassment of non-affiliated events, etc. all played a part (to say nothing of always going head to head with the Austin Rodeo, meaning Everclear were already booked). It's a sad state of affairs that has reduced a once bustling downtown filled with drunken, entitled assholes to a less bustling downtown filled with entitled assholes who drink way less these days. For many years, Thor Harris advised one and all that this event was cancelled and you should all go home. This is not the first or the last time his words have proved prophetic and I can only hope he signs a deal with Draft Kings (possible sponsors, if not owners of the 2027 convention). * - ok, they don't ask very often

Join Lionel for a chaotic and opinionated final hour of The Other Side of Midnight, where "talk radio without callers is just broadcasting". Lionel dives headfirst into controversial waters, debating the physics of 9/11 and the "official narratives" surrounding historical events. He dismantles health myths like the Mediterranean diet and the alleged benefits of wine, before turning his sights on the "cringeworthy" authenticity of Erica Kirk and the art of faking tears on command. The phone lines light up with a cast of characters, including a debate on racism in elevators and the memorable debut of "Party Marty"—a retired construction worker from Indiana sharing wild tales of Everclear hangovers and frozen thermometers. From bad impressions to ice storms that turn cars into "rock hard" cubes, this is late-night radio at its most unpredictable. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Join Lionel on The Other Side of Midnight for a chaotic, deep dive into the stories the mainstream media won't touch. In this episode, Lionel investigates the viral phenomenon of "plastic snow"—white flakes that reportedly turn black, smell like chemicals, and refuse to melt. The skepticism ramps up as he questions the official narratives surrounding Bin Laden's burial at sea and the "freefall" physics of Building 7 on 9/11. From the Pope's warning against forming emotional bonds with predatory AI to debunking health myths like the Mediterranean diet, no topic is safe. Featuring raw "red pill" moments, a roast of old-school televangelists, and wild listener calls from characters like "Party Marty" (sharing tales of Everclear hangovers), this is late-night radio at its most unpredictable. Here's a tightened, smoother version:Once Every Two Weeks heads back to Tampa for part two of its deep dive into Mighty Joe Plum and their cult‑classic album, The Happiest Dogs—this time without guests, but with even more stories, memories, and unapologetic track‑by‑track nerding out.Mark and Thom start with life updates and live‑show war stories: canceled Bush plans, road trips to Oklahoma, and nights out with Sponge, Local H, Everclear, Counting Crows, and Gaslight Anthem—with plenty of opinions on which aging bands have aged well, and which absolutely have not. That conversation about getting older on stage becomes the framework for the whole episode. From there, they return to Mighty Joe Plum: Florida kids who turned youth‑group friendships into a major‑label deal and a regional hit, only to end up as one of the '90s great “almost lost” bands. They trace the band's path through Orlando station WJRR, producer Justin Niebank, a sound that was “just rock” with a subtle twang, and a history that somehow barely exists online—making this podcast an accidental archive for The Happiest Dogs. Most of the episode is a deep musical dive. Mark and Thom walk through the record song by song, highlighting Brett Williams' vivid but economical lyrics, his shifting vocal delivery, and the way the band quietly bends standard verse–chorus structures into something more interesting. From the opener “Irish” through “Borderline,” “I Fell In,” “Miss Hollywood,” “Stupid,” “Go Now,” “Sweet Orange Marmalade,” “Lumberjack,” and “Please Hear Me,” they talk textures, hooks, and the emotional weight behind deceptively simple lines. They give special focus to the single “Live Through This (Fifteen Stories),” which reached number six on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and turned an unlikely image—an ant's resilience—into a surprisingly hopeful rock anthem. Along the way they dig up old reviews, stray blog posts, and even a relic of a band website, laughing at odd U2 comparisons while insisting the song has genuinely held up.In the final stretch, they look at what came after: members moving into new projects, Mark Mercado's later work in A&R, Brett's unfinished Peddling Home material, and how one guest vocal with Jeff (as Horace Holloway) now feels like an “unofficial final” Mighty Joe Plum track. They each name their top three songs from The Happiest Dogs (with “Live Through This (Fifteen Stories)” at number one for both) and invite listeners to queue up the whole album, share their own memories, and argue with their picks—because on Once Every Two Weeks, the nostalgia is real, the music matters, and the conversation is the best part. Running a boutique audiophile label is not easy, as Shane Buettner has learned in the 10 years since he founded Intervention Records. There are licensing agreements to be negotiated, artists to please, mastering engineers and pressing plants to be engaged, vinyl formulation and cover design to be arranged, plus marketplace changes and ever-increasing competition to be navigated. The label's first release was Stealer's Wheel's debut, with standout pressings featuring Joe Jackson, Judee Sill, Matthew Sweet, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Peter Frampton, Everclear and others to follow. With so many labels jumping into the audiophile pool, has licensing recordings become harder? What dictates pricing? Do Buettner's customers care more about 180-gram vinyl or tip-on jackets? And how did he land Intervention's new Sun Records deal, with Kevin Gray-mastered 45 RPM releases from Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash on the way?

Reach out to Cody and Buhler to tell them what's up!Tell me everything is wonderful now...On today's episode of False Start, John Buhler (Lead Writer, FanSided) and Cody Williams (Content Director, FanSided.com) gave out their extended reactions to the first College Football Playoff rankings of the year.By virtue of some Playoff Goldilocks, they discussed what teams the Selection Committee are Too Hot, Too Cold and Just Right on.From there, they had a bone or two to pick with teams they find overrated in Oregon and Notre Dame, while giving their praise to teams flying somewhat under the radar in Iowa and Texas. To end the show, the guys took a few shots of Everclear with some JLN.You may not be able to listen to the on the AM Radio, but you can always take the time to False Start!
This week, we're scratching The Itch to play catch-up! The Itch saw so many shows in September and October that we're still recapping them in November! This work is exhausting, but it's worth it when you get to see legends, modern stars, and triumphant returns. And that's just what we did. First, Aaron and KC visited the Family Arena to see Everclear on their Sparkle and Fade anniversary tour alongside fellow alt rockers Local H and Sponge. Then, Dan and his family caught Itch guests Halestorm and Apocalyptica with Lindsey Stirling on a rainy night at St. Louis Music Park. And finally, Aaron was at long last introduced to the "Panera Bread" of music venues when he and KC saw the return of Revis alongside Emerge at Delmar Hall. Enjoy.
