Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateOk, so yes I cried when I interviewed Rachel Baiman. Her writing is stirring and brutal and then when you read about the inspiration behind the songs on her new album Cycles, it's like automatic water works for me. From frank observations of her grandparent's loss of agency to women reckoning the heaviness and grief of motherhood, I am INTO the emotion of these songs. Rachel came to songwriting after she had spent her youth mastering the fiddle. She actually kept her school life separate from her fiddle life, where she would pal around with other kids at the fiddle contests and also play in jams with people four times her age. She attended Vanderbilt in Nashville for an anthropology degree where she centered a lot of her research papers on the fiddle. She left Nashville to study in Edinboro and took full advantage of of the music community she found. That would also set her up to seek out a music community in Nashville upon her return.Rachel is known for her solo career and for her “Nerdy Fiddle Duo“ 10 String Symphony with fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer. The band deconstructs traditional forms and incorporates a lot of original elements. She's three albums deep into her solo work, the latest being produced by Liv Hally of the Australian indie band, Oh Pep! For Cycles, she went to Melbourne to record with Liv to get into her scene. Rachel says “I kind of have this theory that if you want a specific sound, go to the place, use the studio, use the person, use the gear, get in the vibe of the place.” The album, while it's rooted in her folk sound, has a grittier and poppier edge that I find irresistable. It's on the top of my list for 2021 (so far!). Also, she gives us the details on her super cute house and what it means to her to have a place like that to call home. Lots of leaking eyes (AKA crying) for Rachel Baiman. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Bright Siders over Zoom audio! The Bright Siders is a unique musical collaboration between Nashville-based Americana songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn-based child psychiatrist Kari Groff, MD. Together, they create music with the purpose of helping children connect to their emotions. Ten years in the making, their carefully crafted, star-studded debut album A Mind of Your Own arrives just when the world needs it most, and as the importance of mental health resurfaces. Releasing on January 21, 2021 via Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album invites listeners to think deeply about empathy and self-compassion as they navigate the beauty and complexity of their emotional lives.Together with an inclusive cast of inspiring vocalists – including Ed Helms, The War & Treaty, Gaby Moreno, Punch Brothers, Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids), Oh Pep!, Kaia Kater, and more – Andreassen, Dr. Groff and their co-producer, Chris Eldridge, offer a profoundly empowering collection of songs and skits for elementary age children and the grownups who love them. Kari Groff, MD is an accomplished physician running a child psychiatry practice in Brooklyn, New York. Her side passion has always been as a fiddler and songwriter. Through her clinical work as a child psychiatrist, Dr. Groff has seen first-hand how powerful music can be in helping children to process emotions. As a young doctor, she started writing her own material based on the issues brought to her by her patients, weaving psychiatric advice within her catchy lyrics.Kristin Andreassen has toured world stages as a singer, clogger, square dance caller and educator, first with the Maryland-based Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, and then with oldtime stringband Uncle Earl (Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, KC Groves) and “folk noir” trio Sometymes Why (Ruth Ungar, Aoife O’Donovan). As a songwriter, Andreassen’s achievements include the kids’ radio hit “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color for Your Eyes”. It was a chance meeting between Andreassen and Dr. Groff that launched The Bright Siders as a shared musical endeavor. The songs and skits, along with Dr. Groff’s “Try this at home…” suggestions contained in the liner notes, are all intended to set the stage for conversations with children about common emotional themes and experiences they’re likely to have while growing up. “More than anything, we encourage parents, educators, and caregivers to listen to this music with their children. Where does the real magic of this album happen? It’s in actively listening to the music with children and then talking about what they experience in response to the music,” says Dr. Groff.“Children should understand that their feelings are valid and important to the adults around them,” she continues. “And parents can help children live rich and meaningful lives by helping them accept and understand their emotional experiences with compassion – even if they, as parents, cannot directly fix a problem that is making them anxious or sad.” With playful lyrics and contagious melodies, this music cuts through the monofocus of our pandemic-centered times, offering a practical guide to raising emotionally intelligent children who, one day soon, will take those skills with them as they experience the beauty in growing up and becoming themselves. We want to hear from you! Oh Pep! are indie-folk/pop duo Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs. They are from Melbourne, Australia but we were able to catch up in person while they were on tour in the US (with our mutual friend Gregory Alan Isakov) in support of their new album called "I Wasn't Only Thinking About You". We cover a lot of ground in this conversation (with lots of giggling along the way!). They share the story of how they came together as a band, and tell us about something outside of music that they both want to do. We talk about the grounding nature of journaling, the beauty and romance of handwritten letters, and some of the challenges (and benefits!) of a life on the road. They also share some “favorites” including their musical and personal inspirations, though Liv so beautifully adds that to her, it’s “more that there are moments that are really inspirational than people.” I so enjoyed catching up with these two wonderful friends and I know you’re going to love getting to know them a bit! Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs combined their first syllables and their musical talents in creating Oh Pep! in their native Melbourne, Australia a few years ago. Both have studied music at the university level but their earliest recordings show an unfussy freedom in adopting folk and Americana forms. On this year's full-length Stadium Cake, the pair embrace a fuller palette of pop sounds while still tackling some big-ticket issues in their lyrics. Songs performed are "Wanting," Doctor Doctor" and "Afterward." Recorded August 3 at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by Jon Valley.
