Today's guest is Felix Bechtolsheimer; and I'm only going to say that once. His band, Curse Of Lono has a new album out called People In Cars. But before we get into that, we talk about a lot of stuff. Felix has my unfailing respect and admiration for being completely open and honest about the path that led him to go to rehab, including a harrowing experience in an experimental opioid addiction program in a German mental hospital! But music is one thing that helped pull him through. He wrote over 100 songs during that period.Soon after that, he started his band Hey Negrita and Felix reveals why they gave themselves that unusual name. After that band ceased, Felix spent some time studying at the London Film Academy before starting his current band, Curse Of Lono. Another unusual name, another interesting story behind it. They've just released their latest album, which was no easy feat. It was difficult for anyone to create an album during Covid, but Felix also lost his father, and uncle, his former partner, and eventually, his entire band. But the album is beautiful. There's even a song inspired by a French punk rocker who robbed a bank, disappeared for 30 years, then turned himself in. Pick up the new album, People In Cars, wherever you get music. For the guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader of the London-based Curse of Lono, Felix Bechtolsheimer, these past few years have been steeped with loss: his father, uncle, ex-partner, and his band – whose lineup was completely overhauled to the pandemic. The band's name comes from Hunter S. Thompson's 1983 book of the same name, and their cinematic southern gothic country songs land somewhere between The Rolling Stones, Wilco, Lou Reed, the Doors, Leonard Cohen and Lee Hazelwood. Bechtolsheimer's baritone guitars and baritone vocals are “a key part of the Lono sound”, which might be good for “a late-night desert drive” (GuitarWorld.com). Curse of Lono's new record, People In Cars – an album named for a 2017 photo book by Mike Mandel – is introspective and at times steeped in memories of darkness and despair, and “is themed around the many roads he's travelled and those who've shared the journey” (folkradio.co.uk). Curse of Lono performs some of these songs for us remotely. - Caryn Havlik Set list: In Your Arms, London Rain, Way to Mars Watch "In Your Arms": Watch "London Rain": Watch "Way to Mars":

As broadcast July 27, 2021 with extra laughs for you podcast punters. We begin the show remembering a time in a small Illinois town where two rock legends banded arms with other protestors to try and shut down a blatant exploiter of the Amazon rainforest back in 2001, exactly 20 years ago. Since Doors drummer John Densmore & Bonnie Raitt locked arms & were arrested that fateful day, our planet in the intervening years has obviously gone into a massive ecological crisis to only be met by charlatan politicians and shrugs from the corporate elite. Don't back down in demanding change! Welcome to episode #33 of the XS Noize Music Podcast. This episode Mark Millar is joined by Curse of Lono Founder and frontman Felix Bechtolsheimer. To talk about their acclaimed debut album ‘Severed' which was released on Submarine Cat Records on April 7th. Founded and fronted by Felix Bechtolsheimer, formerly the singer-guitarist in British roots pioneers Hey Negrita, Curse Of Lono formed in early 2015, though the songs on ‘Severed' were written over a 14-year period. They range from the perky, Paul Simon-ish new single ‘Pick Up The Pieces' to the more lugubrious ‘He Takes My Place', the almost jazzy ‘London Rain' and the rootsy, rhythmic ‘Send For The Whiskey'. The album belongs as much to the Americana tradition and old faithfuls such as Little Feat as it does to more modern, playful practitioners of the form such as Beck.
