Drawing upon her formal training in composition and sound engineering from Berklee College of Music, she initially explored vocal performance, classical guitar and piano before her creative trajectory shifted when a neighbour lent her a Buchla 100 modular synthesizer. Her music combines the use of modular, analogue and rare synthesizers, orchestral textures and voice. Her early self-released works, including Cows Will Eat the Weeds and Tides: Music for Meditation and Yoga (2014), were followed by Euclid (2015), her first official album with Western Vinyl, which combined structured songwriting with ambient exploration. This was succeeded by EARS (2016), which critics praised for its seamless layering of organic instrumentation and analogue synthesis to evoke feelings of awe and disorientation. Her 2017 release, The Kid, marked a conceptual leap, tracing stages of human development through richly textured, emotionally resonant compositions that bolstered her status among experimental music audiences.Kaitlyn has performed alongside artists like Hot Chip, Glass Beams, RY X, Caribou and Four Tet, composed original works for Apple, BBC Orchestra, Adult Swim, MoMA, Red Bull and others, plus her song “Stratus” was also synced in the 2023 film Priscilla Motion Picture Soundtrack. She has also collaborated with longtime inspiration Suzanne Ciani and other artists like Emile Mosseri, while exploring multidisciplinary projects through her label, Touchtheplants. On her latest album, GUSH, Kaitlyn sets her sights on aesthetics, focusing on the heightened awareness of and presence in the world where every interaction, whether with people, objects or nature, has the potential to become a moment of connection and personification.https://kaitlynaureliasmith.com/https://www.instagram.com/kaitlynaurelia/https://www.facebook.com/kaitlynaurelia/https://x.com/kaitlynaureliaWilliam J. We've got a bit of a strange one for you on this week's Talkhouse Podcast. Back during the darkest days of the pandemic, we hosted an Instagram live chat between Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and actor/musician Joe Keery, who at the time was best known as part of the cast of Stranger Things. Keery is also a musician, having released music with his band Post Animal, and he was just starting to release music under the name Djo. Keery had a pretty big viral hit with a Djo song this year: You may have heard “End Of Beginning.” If you haven't, check it out right here. Anyway, we figured that a lot of folks may have missed that conversation, so now would be the perfect time to resurface it in slightly edited podcast form. These two had never met, but they jump into a great chat about songwriting, Miley Cyrus's house—which is where Coyne was dialing in from—and lots more, including how Coyne and his Flaming Lips bandmate Steven Drozd are like french fries and salt, about how listening is equally vital in music and acting, and much more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 1:40 – "This is Wayne Flaming Lip" getting himself connected 6:25 – Joe's thoughts on the Flaming Lips' live show, which Wayne thinks isn't really about the band 10:57 – Wayne asks Joe how making music is different than being directed 22:52 – "You have to listen to your own music!" 29:41 – Making music and creating art shouldn't be a sacrifice Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Wayne Coyne and Joe Keery for time traveling from 2020 for this episode. My irregular series on albums that are perfect 10/10s - here celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album that put the underground alt stars on the same level as Radiohead, and with Yoshimi, one of the great one-two's in alternative music. Much credit has always gone to the incredible "Indie Pet Sounds" music, but Wayne Coyne's singing and in particular, lyrics are criminally underappreciated. It's one of the greatest alternative albums thematically - and its themes of angst filled superheroes, scientists trying to save the world and existential dread and wonder, feel even more relevant today.

The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983. Over the last four decades, they've put out 16 albums. In 1999, they put out their album The Soft Bulletin, and that brought them a new level of success. And then, in 2002, they followed it up with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which was their biggest album to date. Pitchfork named it one of the top 5 albums of the year, Stereogum called it one of the best albums of the decade, and they won a Grammy. And the biggest song from the album was "Do You Realize??" So, for this episode, I talked to Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd about how that song was first imagined. You'll hear the very first demo Wayne recorded for the song, and the demo he and Steven put together later, on their way to making the final version with producer Dave Fridmann. For more, visit songexploder.net/the-flaming-lips.

In this episode, Maria Paz Gutiérrez does battle against the one absolute truth of human existence and all life… death. After getting a team of scientists to stand in for death (the grim reaper wasn't available), we parry and thrust our way through the myriad ways that death comes for us - from falling pianos to evolution's disinterest in longevity. In the process, we see if we can find a satisfying answer to the question “why do we have to die” and find ourselves face to face with the bitter end of everything that ever existed. The Specials - Punky Reggae Party Bob Marley- Public Image PIL- London Calling The Clash- Civilization Don Letts (feat. The Specials - Punky Reggae Party Bob Marley- Public Image PIL- London Calling The Clash- Civilization Don Letts (feat. Over the last four decades, the courageous and creative Flaming Lips have put out 16 studio albums. Their genre is an alphabet soup that ranges from acid rock and ambient to zany psychedelia, all while pumping on a pop heartbeat. They've won three Grammys, written and filmed an alien colonization movie and soundtrack (Christmas on Mars), reimagined Dark Side of the Moon with Henry Rollins, had their hit “Do You Realize??” named the official rock song of Oklahoma, and of course, performed in bubbles before and during the pandemic. As members of one of rock's most adventurous bands, founding frontman Wayne Coyne and his longtime collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd (who originally joined the band in 1991 as a drummer), have tried almost everything, including transforming their sensitive-smash album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, into a Broadway musical. And Yoshimi was back in the spotlight this spring as the Lips toured for its (delayed) 20th anniversary, playing it front to back for their show dates later in the season. Before the band delighted a sold-out crowd at the Ryman Auditorium with Yoshimi and 11 other of their greatest hits, Drozd invited PG's Chris Kies onstage to catalog his bizarre-yet-basic setup. Steven details the origins and deterioration of his 1967 Fender Jazzmaster (and why there's a Hot Rails in the bridge), explains the superficial reason why his doubleneck only has one fretboard, and shows off a pedalboard that's probably smaller than yours.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard

Music critic Shaad D'Souza joins DJ Louie to talk about one of modern pop's most captivating, divisive and perplexing figures, Miley Cyrus. Louie and Shaad open with a break down of Miley's emergence on the smash Disney show, Hannah Montana, how the character's own double life as a pop star and a “normal girl” mirrored Miley's own, and the chaste image and anodyne pop-rock empowerment anthems on which Miley-as-Hannah made her name and, later in career, had to torch. They next dive into Miley's various, often bold but almost always awkward attempts to break out of the Hannah Montana box, first with her calculated pivot towards sexed-up dance pop on 2010's nonstarter Can't Be Tamed and much more effectively on 2013's Bangerz, a fascinating, garish record that repositioned the former Disney kid as a freewheeling, hip hop-obsessed party monster, a brazen and un-self-aware culture vulture and, for the first and perhaps only time in her a career, a trendsetting pop star. Louie and Shaad debate the record's prescient centering of trap in mainstream pop, as well its table-setting fusion of rap and country, how we view Miley's egregious cultural appropriation through a contemporary lens, and whether the album's whirlwind of controversy obscured some of the record's delicate, honest songwriting and virtuoso vocal performances. Later, they discuss how Miley squandered a lot of remaining good will with her next two projects, 2015's utterly bizarre Wayne Coyne-collabo Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz and 2017's middle-of-the-road country-pop-leaning Younger Now, and if Miley has effectively repositioned herself in recent years with a series of well-received live performances and covers and a turn towards rock homage on her 2020 album Plastic Hearts. Finally, Louie and Shaad rank Miley Cyrus in the official Pop Pantheon. The Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono podcast tells the story of the making of the compilation tribute album of the same name. Conceived and curated by Benjamin Gibbard (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of Death Cab for Cutie), the LP celebrates the extraordinary work of multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and activist Yoko Ono with inspired new renditions of her songs by an array of brilliant artists - Sharon Van Etten, David Byrne, Sudan Archives, Death Cab for Cutie, Thao, U.S. Girls, Jaysom, Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields), Deerhoof, We Are King, the Flaming Lips, Japanese Breakfast, Yo La Tengo and Amber Coffman. These re-interpretations of her work accentuate Ono's powerful artistic impact, lasting cultural relevance, and utterly unique approach to songcraft. Hosted by Gibbard and music journalist Jenny Eliscu, The Ocean Child Podcast features interviews with several of the album's contributors about their own meaningful connections to Ono's music and art: - Ben Gibbard discusses his own relationship with Ono's music, what first inspired the idea for the album, and why misconceptions about Ono's catalog need to be set straight once and for all. - David Byrne highlights the influence of Ono's book Grapefruit on his Broadway show American Utopia, and talks about adding some new lyrics to his version of the song "Who Has Seen The Wind?," and how he wrangled Yo La Tengo to join him on the track. - Thao examines the barriers that kept her from delving into Ono's music earlier, and explains why recording her version of "Yellow Girl (Stand By For Life)" was so cathartic. - Deerhoof's Greg Saunier reminisces about dancing alongside Ono in a video for one of her songs, and reveling in the sense of freedom she brings to every artistic endeavor. - The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne describes what it's like to record with Ono ("She is one of the only people that you just don't get to figure out," he says), and remembers his early encounters with her music -- listening to the early Plastic Ono Band stuff while his older brothers drove him to school, "smoking 4 or 5 joints in the fifteen minutes it took to get there." - Japanese Breakfast's Michelle Zauner talks about how her Asian identity informed her early perceptions of Ono, and how pandemic life influenced her choice to perform her version of "Nobody Sees Me Like You Do" on piano. - Amber Coffman comments on the concept behind her beautiful cover of "Run, Run, Run" and the inspiration she draws from Ono's "incredible sense of personal freedom and peacefulness." Due out February 18th, on Yoko Ono's 89th birthday, the Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono podcast will accompany the compilation tribute album of the same name. Imagined and curated by Benjamin Gibbard (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of Death Cab for Cutie), the LP celebrates the extraordinary work of multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and activist Yoko Ono with new renditions of her songs by an array of brilliant artists including (in order of their voices in the trailer): David Byrne, Japanese Breakfast, The Flaming Lips, Thao, and Death Cab for Cutie, as well as Sharon Van Etten, Deerhoof, Yo La Tengo, Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields), We Are KING, Amber Coffman, Jay Som, Sudan Archives and U.S. Girls. These new interpretations of her work accentuate Ono's powerful artistic impact, lasting cultural relevance, and utterly unique approach to songcraft. Hosted by Gibbard and journalist Jenny Eliscu, the Ocean Child podcast features interviews with contributors about their own meaningful connections to Ono's music and art, whether it's David Byrne describing the influence of Ono's book Grapefruit on his Broadway show American Utopia, or The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne describing what it's like to work with Ono, or Japanese Breakfast's Michelle Zauner examining how her own Asian identity affects her relationship with Ono's songs, or Gibbard remembering picking up a vinyl copy of Ono's Season of Glass at a record store years ago, and feeling stopped in his tracks by its beauty, from the very first listen. As he explains, “Her songwriting has been criminally overlooked. This is an artist whose output has run the gamut from avant-garde to bubblegum pop, often across a single album. She has consistently created melodies as memorable as those of the best pop writers. As a lyricist, she has always written with poignance, sophistication and deep introspection. It is my sincere hope that a new crop of Yoko Ono fans fall in love with her songwriting due in some small part to this album we have put together.” On Spotify, thanks to their awesome Music + Talk feature, the Ocean Child podcast will also feature renditions from the Ocean Child album, along with some of Ono's original versions. A portion of the album's proceeds will be donated to WhyHunger, a non-profit organization Ono has supported for decades in their efforts to transform our food system by building social justice and striking at the root causes of hunger and poverty.
