1971 studio album by Led Zeppelin

Welcome back to the Manor! While the news of this broke a fair bit ago, for those who didn't know, the man on the Led Zeppelin IV album (Signs as Percy likes to call it) has been identified! If you want to know more, pour yourself a pint and listen on! Next week's episode is the final episode (#5) of our Led Zep Physical Graffiti 50th anniversary arc! Get in touch with us at Podbean: https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-4pksr-a17e1a Or on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twinterrorsmacabremanormeadmetalmayhe/ Or on twitter: @Terrors_Manor On Instagram: @macabremanormeadmetalmayhem You can also find our podcast on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and I Heart Radio; pretty much wherever fine (and our) podcasts are aired. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do? Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children. Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on. Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child? Influence! Did you share music with your friends? Influence! Did you have access to a good radio station? Or print media? Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today. In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring. Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971. Not much variation, really. One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us. Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here. Mick references Atlantic Records' sampler called “Very Together” which featured “Carey” from this album, and pointed out a link between Joni Mitchell and Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. How did YOUR tastes develop? Drop us a line & let us know. Enjoy! On Part 2 of our track x track review of Physical Graffiti as it turns 50, we review the 2nd LP/CD. While there is little in the world of rock music that can stand up to the first LP/CD, the second is more eclectic and shows the real breadth of all Led Zeppelin could do vs. more one dimensional bands at the time. In The Light is an epic that builds to joyous uplift. Sick Again shows Jimmy's slide skills were among the best of his generation while Bron-Yr-Aur shows the quieter acoustic side of Jimmy and great change of pace which leads to a bittersweet Down By The Seaside. Lyrically the boys get a little political with Night Flight, remember relationships from their youth Ten Years Gone and illuminate the LA groupie scene on Sick Again. Because they needed at least 25 minutes of material after their 1974 recording session at Headley Grange (where they recorded part Led Zeppelin IV), they dusted off and cleaned up some songs from previous recording sessions. Some were acoustic numbers that Jimmy electrified like Down By The Seaside and Ten Years Gone. All the songs give all four members of the band a chance to shine and they even enjoy a roadhouse jam with Ian Stewart on Boogie With Stu. The second disc on Physical Graffiti may not be the best. Many of the tracks would never make it on a single album. But double albums have deep tracks and the ones where the boys get away from their heavy riffs and blues based badassery are cool outliers in the Zeppelin catalog. And the heavy riffs from Jimmy Page are amazing. We love it! Robert Bearce is a son, a sibling, a husband, and a father. He's the brains behind The Free Rent Band, and he's my guest for Episode No. 151.In addition to his numerous other talents, Robert is also an app developer, a music lover, and he's the founder of Briar Fest (briarfestkc.com). It was a pleasure to meet him, and chat with him about his journey so far. We touched on writing, recording, the longevity of the band, his seemingly fearless knack for birthing ideas and launching them into the world. We, of course, also talked about a few of Robert's favorite albums, which were these:Led Zeppelin IV (1971) Eat a Peach (1972), The Allman Brothers BandJohnny Cash's American V: A Hundred Highways (2006)In Time (2013), The MavericksPlease check out Robert's Free Rent Band & Publishing page on Facebook, and find their content on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube. Many thanks to Robert, and Happy 2025 to you all.Note: In discussing the movie, Friday, I mistakenly called Chris Tucker's character Craig, instead of Smokey.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. Today in 1971, the release of the fourth Led Zeppelin album. The opening track, "Black Dog," still gets played and shared today, and it got its name from a very unusual visitor to the studio. Plus: in 2023, a researcher came across the original version of the photo on the Zeppelin album's cover, the one with the older man carrying a big bundle of sticks on his back.

Imagine being in a record store, just flipping through the LED ZEPPELIN section of albums on November 8, 1971, and finding an album that appeared unfamiliar, mysterious, and perhaps even a bit out of place. The album cover gave no reference as to the band's name or any discernible album title, the back cover had no track listing, there were no pictures of the band. There was nothing. On the front cover, there is nothing more than a framed picture showing an old, bearded man standing with a cane and carrying a large bundle of sticks on his back, hanging on the weathered wall of a semi-demolished home once belonging to someone who has long since passed away. On the back cover, a high-rise apartment building jutting into the bleak, grey sky, surrounded by smaller apartment homes and lush greenery in the foreground. On the spine of the album, where one would expect to see the name of the band and the name of the album, there were only four distinct, unusual symbols. In time, it would come to be known by many names: RUNES, ZOSO, UNTITLED, and the most common name of them all, LED ZEPPELIN IV, which would go on to become the biggest selling album in the band's catalog and one of the top 10 biggest selling albums in the history of ALL music. Get ready to “have a good August” and remember that “sometimes words have 12 meanings” because it's time to take “Dry July” a step further and step up your “pause game” while we share some kind words regarding our neighbors that were likely caused by a case of “Alabama jet lag”. "And as we wind on down the road ..." of Season 10 of Finest Worksongs, we turn our attention to perhaps the original Monsters of Rock: Lez Zeppelin. Their fourth album (sometimes called "IV," sometimes referred to as "ZoSo") was released in 1971 and was an immediate and longstanding success. "IV" became one of those albums that everyone seemingly had thanks to the might of muscle of "Rock and Roll," "Black Dog," the marathon majesty of "Stairway to Heaven," and the mystical and mysterious "Battle of Evermore" -- not to mention the pounding of "When the Levee Breaks." It's an album that showcases the best of Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones, and it truly stands the test of time -- more than 50 years later.
What role do drums play in Rock? Should that be keeping the beat or leading from the front? Who are some of the greatest drummers in rock music? Formed in 1984 in Oslo, Norway, the band has played a pivotal role in shaping the black metal genre and its associated subculture. Mayhem's music is characterized by its aggressive, raw, and dark sound, often featuring dissonant guitar riffs, frenzied drumming, and visceral vocals. The band's early lineup included iconic figures like Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, who was not only the founder and guitarist but also a central figure in the early Norwegian black metal scene, and Per "Dead" Ohlin, known for his disturbing stage presence and tragic suicide in 1991. Dead's suicide deeply impacted the band and contributed to their notorious reputation. Mayhem's notoriety also stems from various incidents, including the infamous burning of historic Norwegian stave churches and the murder of Euronymous by former member Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes in 1993. These events garnered international attention and added to the band's aura of darkness and controversy. Despite these tumultuous occurrences, Mayhem's music and legacy have endured. Albums like "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (1994) are considered classics of the black metal genre, influencing countless bands that followed. The band's imagery often draws from occult and macabre themes, adding to their mystique. Throughout their career, Mayhem has undergone numerous lineup changes and musical evolutions, all while maintaining a connection to their black metal roots. Their impact on extreme metal and underground music culture remains significant, making them a cornerstone of the Norwegian black metal scene and a symbol of its uncompromising and controversial spirit. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin was a British rock band formed in 1968 that became one of the most influential and iconic bands in the history of rock music. The band consisted of four members: Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass/keyboard), and John Bonham (drums). Led Zeppelin is known for their innovative and powerful blend of blues, rock, folk, and psychedelia, which laid the groundwork for hard rock and heavy metal genres. There has been speculation and controversy surrounding Led Zeppelin's alleged involvement with the occult, particularly regarding guitarist Jimmy Page's interest in esoteric and mystical subjects. Page was known for his fascination with symbols, magic, and ancient mythology. He collected occult books, artworks, and artifacts, and he was also influenced by the teachings of famous occultist Aleister Crowley. Page purchased Crowley's former home, Boleskine House, and the band's record label, Swan Song Records, featured an image of an angel playing a trumpet from a design by Crowley. One of the most enduring aspects of the occult rumors is the alleged backward masking or "backmasking" in Led Zeppelin's music. Backmasking involves the insertion of hidden messages when a song is played in reverse. Some fans and critics claimed to have found messages related to the occult, Satanism, or even drug use when playing certain Led Zeppelin songs backward. The most famous example is the song "Stairway to Heaven," where a specific part of the lyrics is said to reveal hidden messages when reversed. However, the band members have consistently denied intentional involvement in such practices, attributing any perceived messages to coincidence or the imagination of listeners. It's important to note that while Led Zeppelin's members had an interest in mystical and symbolic subjects, and their imagery occasionally reflected these interests, the extent of any actual involvement with the occult is debatable. Much of the occult-related speculation surrounding the band is based on interpretations and theories that have been amplified over the years. Led Zeppelin's legacy primarily lies in their groundbreaking music and their impact on rock and roll. They released numerous iconic albums, including their self-titled debut, "Led Zeppelin II," "Led Zeppelin IV," and "Physical Graffiti," which featured hits like "Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Black Dog." Their live performances were legendary for their energy and improvisation, contributing to their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Blink 182: Blink-182 is an American rock band that gained significant popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. The band is known for their energetic pop-punk sound and catchy melodies. Blink-182 was formed in 1992 in Poway, California, and its original lineup consisted of Mark Hoppus (bass and vocals), Tom DeLonge (guitar and vocals), and Scott Raynor (drums). Travis Barker later replaced Raynor on drums. Tom DeLonge is one of the founding members of Blink-182 and played a crucial role in the band's success. He was known for his distinctive singing style and witty, often humorous, lyrics. DeLonge's guitar playing and vocal contributions helped shape the band's sound, which combined punk rock sensibilities with pop hooks. In addition to his work with Blink-182, Tom DeLonge developed an interest in various side projects and ventures. One of his notable endeavors outside of music was his fascination with UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) and extraterrestrial life. DeLonge's interest in UFOs eventually led him to launch the To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science (TTSA) in 2017. The TTSA is an organization that aims to explore and research various topics related to UFOs, advanced technology, and potential interactions with non-human intelligence. Through the TTSA, DeLonge has advocated for increased transparency and government disclosure of information regarding UFO sightings and encounters. He has stated that his interest in UFOs was inspired by personal experiences and a desire to uncover the truth behind these phenomena. It's important to note that the field of UFO research can be controversial and is often met with skepticism from the scientific community. Tom DeLonge's involvement with UFO research has brought attention to the topic and sparked discussions about the possibility of extraterrestrial life and advanced technologies beyond our current understanding. His efforts have also prompted conversations about the need for rigorous scientific investigation in this field.
On the 4th Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the classic 1971 album, "Led Zeppelin IV." Led Zeppelin IV sometimes called, untitled, Zoso, runes and even 4 symbols is considered to be not only one of Led Zeppelin's greatest achievements, but also music in general. Filled with immortal songs like, Black Dog, Rock And Roll and perhaps the greatest rock song of all time, Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin IV catapulted Led Zeppelin into a superstardom like very few have ever achieved. Following Led Zeppelin III lukewarm reception, the band went to work on the next album in October of 1970. The album still featured Led Zeppelin signature sound, blues, heavy metal, rock and roll, blues and folk. However, the songs had more of a punch and more accessible to the public. Led Zeppelin IV went to Number 2 in the USA and went 24 times platinum in the United States. The album has made almost every possible greatest albums list ever created and so have many of the songs, notably Stairway To Heaven. The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Led Zeppelin IV SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the three previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. The Far Middle episode 96 begins with birthday wishes to jazz guitarist Geroge Benson, and moves on to a timely dedication as Major League Baseball’s 2023 season gets underway in just eight days from this episode’s release. Going back to 1996, for episode 96, when no baseball players were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Nick offers a thoughtful look on players that aren’t in Cooperstown, but who have the career accomplishments to warrant induction. Nick then transitions from America’s pastime to the time of Teddy Roosevelt during his tenure at the Civil Service Commission. Nick discusses Roosevelt’s efforts to upend the spoils system, and replace it with a meritocracy in terms of hiring government employees. The idea was to go from who you knew, to what you knew, explains Nick. Related, Nick examines government today and how key positions are staffed. “I fear that our government has steered far, far away from where Teddy Roosevelt was looking to take it in the late 1800s,” says Nick. He asserts governmental decisions are not being made by those with the most experience and best skillsets, resulting in ineffective government being exposed at the worst possible times during crises. The discussion of meritocracy is connected to America’s regional power grids, and the need to let competition drive the best generation sources to power our energy systems. Nick focuses on the PJM grid, and revisits Winter Storm Elliot that hit the mid-Atlantic on Christmas Eve this past December. Nick underscores that natural gas, in particular Appalachian natural gas, didn’t just save the PJM grid, it saved lives. Despite the facts, there are environmental groups looking to fool the public and force an agenda. Environmentalists are executing their new sneaky two-step technique, which Nick dubs their “tame and blame” campaign. “If we allow natural gas to fairly compete and grow with private investment and innovation, then no more grid weakness, anywhere,” says Nick. He then presents six stark truths about wind and solar at scale on our power grid, which Winter Storm Elliot again exposed. When climate policies of the Left start to infiltrate the infrastructure of the power grid, cracks are going to appear quickly. And the same can be said of office real estate today in America’s major cities. Nick explains how climate change policies are stressing both grid capacity of power pools as well as balance sheets of urban office tower companies. In closing, Nick recalls Led Zeppelin’s best-selling album, Led Zeppelin IV, and in particular the track, “When the Levee Breaks.” In a similar vein, Nick argues that if, “the Left keeps ruling, the grid is going to break, and if the Left keeps ruling, the debt portfolio is going to break.”

Houses of the Holy saw Led Zeppelin grow as a band more than any of their previous 4 albums. After the enormous success of Led Zeppelin IV, the boys used some of their winnings to build home studios which allowed them to flesh more ideas and come to the studio with more robust ideas. John Paul Jones really stretched out the most showing his ability to play funk (The Crunge), arrange string sections (Rain Song), or take us on an epic ominous ride (No Quarter). Jimmy Page provides the killer riffs with the softer acoustic bits, Robert Plant adds his trademark lyrics and vocals while John Bonham hammers those drums to give everyone the space they need to shine. Joining us for the 2nd time is House of the Dragon creator/executive producer/head writer Ryan Condal. Ryan is an old school metal head whose passion for rock music is only eclipsed by his passion for writing and you'll hear plenty of literary references and big words we don't often hear on a show of our ilk. We discuss the majesty of Zeppelin, go track by track, discuss the Hypnosis cover and the songs that didn't make the cut but ended up on other albums. Remember when Nicholas Cage was known as Nicolas Coppola? Remember when the mall was THE place to hang out? Remember when half the girls in your high school class were trying to look like Pat Benatar? Remember when Sean Penn was funny?? :o Well if you don't remember any of those things, here is an iconic tie capsule movie to remind of those and many other things from forty years ago. Yes this high school comedy came out forty years ago and it was not only the directorial debut for Amy Heckerling who would go on to direct Clueless but it was also the screenwriting debut of Cameron Crowe who would go on to write and direct Jerry Maguire. And it has a STACKED cast of future top talent including Penn, Cage, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Judge Reinhold among several others. It's time to go back to Ridgemont and find out if playing Led Zeppelin IV on the first date REALLY works….Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Robert Plant is a singer and songwriter who was Led Zeppelin's frontman from the band's inception in 1968 until it disbanded in 1980. Led Zeppelin sold hundreds of millions of albums and in their heyday acquired a reputation for unbridled rock ‘n' roll hedonism. Since 1980 Robert has gone on to achieve success as a solo artist and has collaborated with other musicians, notably the bluegrass singer Alison Krauss. Their 2007 album Raising Sand won five Grammy Awards. Robert was born in West Bromwich in 1948. At 15 he appeared on stage for the first time as the lead vocalist for a local band after the regular singer fell ill. In 1965 he started performing with the Crawling King Snakes and it was after one of the band's gigs that he met his friend, the drummer John Bonham. In 1968 Robert and John joined up with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones to form Led Zeppelin. Later that year the band embarked on its first US tour and the enthusiastic response from American audiences heralded a new force in British music. Over the next 12 years the band released eight studio albums including Led Zeppelin IV which featured one of their most popular tracks – Stairway to Heaven. In 1980 John Bonham died from alcohol poisoning at the age of 32 and Led Zeppelin broke up. Devastated by his friend's death, Robert took himself off to explore other creative avenues, recording and performing with a wide range of artists. Robert and Alison Krauss released their second album, Raising the Roof, in 2021. Robert lives in Worcestershire near where he grew up. He is a committed fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Black Country homing pigeons.
