This is Episode 20 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. “The Coffee Roasters” – An interview with Brad and Heather Davis, Owners and Operators of Battle Born Coffee Roasters. Brad and Heather met at a young age. Brad had his eye on Law Enforcement, while Heather's background was in graphic design. Between politics, anti-police rhetoric, and the need to battle as hard-working Americans, “Battle Born Coffee Roasters” was created. Brad and Heather utilize their skills as they dive into this new venture of roasting coffee. They have learned so much along the way and have created a high quality, organic, product. Brad and Heather work tirelessly, not only continuing to enforce the law at the border, but also raising a family, and developing their new business. I loved learning how Brad and Heather developed their brand, learned techniques on roasting, and show their love for one another, their family, and their community. This is Episode 17 of the @lets_grab_a_cup podcast - "The Commissioner" - An interview with Justin Morgan. A behind the scenes look into the Civilian Police Complaint Commission.Justin Morgan was born and raised in Southern California. Justin's mother was a teacher and Justin's entire family history has roots in all forms of politics. Justin attended California State University, Long Beach (where I initially met Justin). Justin majored in education and became a grade school teacher, which he continued for approximately 12 years. Justin attended Pepperdine University and graduated with Honors, and received a certificate of Law in Business from Cornell University. Justin and his family ventured back to Southern California to continue his roots and was appointed to the Citizen Police Complaint Commission (CPCC) by Mayor Robert Garcia. As Law Enforcement Officers, we think about the CPCC in very basic terms. The Commission is set up of various appointed citizens to hear complaints from individuals about misconduct of police officers. The Commission makes judgements on the complaints based on the facts presented and provides their judgement to the department. While the CPCC is determining their judgement, the Police Department is performing an internal investigation simultaneously. Many police officers believe that if a complaint lands on the desk of the CPCC, it will likely be sustained because law enforcement officers have a strong belief that the CPCC is "against them". There is a stigma associated with the idea that people who have not experienced the world of law enforcement are making judgements on citizen complaints. I was very interested to speak to Justin on this topic, because he describes the Commission as a very fair and unbiased entity. This interview provided me so much insight in the behind the scenes of the Commission and ultimately made the idea of a CPCC less "scary" and less "daunting." I believe there is a place for the CPCC and as long as the commission continues to remain unbiased and continues to look at all of the facts while making decisions on various citizen complaints, I believe the officers have nothing to fear from their decisions. If an officer does something that should be addressed, then we should all be comfortable knowing that the commission will address this complaint confidentially and justly.I really appreciate Justin coming on the podcast and I wish him well on all of his future endeavors. This is Episode 16 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. Leading from the Ground Up! An interview with Retired Police Commander Anthony “Tony” Lopez. Commander Lopez is a one-of-a-kind leader. I had the pleasure to not only work with Tony, but I had the opportunity to learn from him, observing his direct leadership style. Tony's ability to be inclusive and mentor those around him created an atmosphere of teamwork. Tony grew up in Hawaiian Gardens, Ca and although it was never his dream to be a police officer, he ventured into the career on a bet amongst some of his closest friends. Tony graduated the academy as the 92 LA riots were in full effect. Tony jumped into the career with both feet and continued to work hard. As Tony continued throughout his career, he learned from various mentors, which included Retired Chief Anthony Batts. Commander Lopez ended up in the Counter Terrorism Unit, working in downtown LA and was ultimately chosen to be on an FBI joint task force as a Sergeant. After almost 8 years, Tony decided to take the next step and promote to Lieutenant where is leadership was immediately recognized. Tony was tested under some extreme circumstances, handling multiple major incidents around the department. Tony felt the calling to continue to the next step and was chosen as the Commander for the North Patrol Division in 2019. Tony's open-door policy helped foster a learning environment and created true camaraderie. In 2020, Tony was assigned to the Departments Operations Center as the Incident Commander throughout the COVID response. Tony found out just how much stress can come with such a weight on one's shoulders. Tony is not afraid to say that this is when he truly felt the stress of those around him, including his family. Tony ultimately retired after 29 years of service and he is now enjoying retirement with his Wife. I am so appreciative of Tony's hard work and love for the profession. Tony is the type of person that keeps people going. The profession was blessed to have him and I am proud to have him on here to tell his story. This is Episode 7 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. “The Battle of Good over Evil”I sit down with Matthew and Christina Dages and hear their story of family, faith, and perseverance. Matthew is a former Police Officer from La Mesa CA. Matthew was involved in a Use of Force incident in 2020, which ultimately went viral. This Use of Force was scrutinized in the wake of the riots of 2020 and ultimately caused Matthew to lose his job as a police officer and even be prosecuted. Matthew and Christina have had to come out of “the fire of hell” and have been fighting for over a year now. Although Matthew was found “Not Guilty” (spoiler alert), they are both still fighting today to get Matthew his job back as a Police Officer in La Mesa, CA. I urge anyone and everyone to do your own research and watch the video of the Use of Force yourself, which can be found all over Youtube. The entire encounter was captured on body worn camera. I am proud of this couple for overcoming such anguish at an early stage in their relationship. Their courage to stand up and fight for the truth is nothing less than commendable. If you would like to support this family as they continue to fight, you can find donation links on their website https://linktr.ee/ClearOfficerDages. This is Episode 6 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. I sit down with my friend PJ Lyon who is a Police Sergeant. PJ has spent his career making a name for himself, working hard, and being the best police officer he could be. PJ spent time in patrol, as a Field Training Officer, and an extended time working in the Gang Enforcement Team. PJ is an exceptional leader, a great detective, officer, and now Sergeant. PJ was able to earn such credibility by giving “it all” to the job, but as you will discover, this comes at a cost. PJ may have seemed that he had it all going on, but it was in his home life that he struggled the most. PJ had to deal with a loss that no parent deserves and on top of that, he had to watch as his daughter struggled for years in pain. I believe that hearing PJ will bring it home for many people who are struggling to maintain a balance between the responsibilities of work and home, and for anyone dealing with some really hard things, it is important to know you are not alone. PJ is a great leader in both his work life and his home life and that comes from working through his own hardships and becoming the man he is today. I am really proud to call PJ my friend, and if any of you are experiencing hardships in this way, I would love to put you in touch with PJ who I know wants to help anyone and everyone he can.
