On this episode of The Underpowered Hour, Steve Beres and Ike Goss cover Land Rover and 4x4 news, including Ford's Filson Edition “fancy” Bronco aimed at the Defender market and rumors of a JLR–Stellantis co-development deal to build vehicles in the U.S. to avoid tariffs, noting prior Jeep–Land Rover prototype history. They discuss rare Land Rover amphibians like the APGP and the Mark II Amphibian mock-up, then react to a California Highway Patrol pursuit that ended with a 2018 Land Rover submerged in Lake Isabella and the driver killed. They touch on uncertainty around Gerry McGovern's status and spy shots of a lightly camouflaged 2027 Defender facelift. They also talk about Jason Momoa's On the Roam featuring Electrogenic electric conversions of classic Land Rovers and mention the film We Bury the Dead, where Daisy Ridley drives a Perentie in Tasmania.

A community meeting led by Sacramento County Supervisor Rich Desmond to address growing traffic safety concerns, specifically the proliferation of e-bikes and e-scooters. Local law enforcement and park officials provide a "crash course" on the legal distinctions between Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes, highlighting that many high-powered models are being operated illegally by minors. The California Highway Patrol emphasizes that electric motorcycles and modified bikes are strictly prohibited on public roads and often lead to dangerous injuries among teenagers. Officials explain that local ordinances now allow for misdemeanor charges and vehicle impoundment to curb reckless riding on the American River Parkway. The discussion underscores a collaborative strategy of education, engineering, and enforcement to manage modern transportation technology that has outpaced existing state laws. Finally, the sources encourage residents to report violations directly to specialized police teams to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Don't Ask Customers What They Want, Ask This Instead with Dean Curtis, ex-Apple, Palm

Dean Curtis was literally in the room when the iPhone was about to change enterprise mobile computing forever. He was at Palm during the smartphone wars, then moved to Apple right as they were trying to crack the enterprise market. In his Apple interview, he asked the VP of iPhone whether the lack of a physical keyboard would kill their chances in enterprise. The answer? "I think we're going to be okay." Today, there's not a single physical keyboard on a phone anymore.Join hosts Nick Paladino and Chuck Moxley as we explore one of our favorite themes: customers don't actually know what they want. Dean Curtis trains his team on this: don't let customers design features, get them to tell you the problem they're trying to solve. He's got this great line about how Apple looked at the keyboard problem differently. Everyone else asked, "How do we make a better keyboard?" Apple asked, "Why is this thing taking up half the device when you're not using it 95% of the time?"Then there's the California Highway Patrol story. Palm did a pilot with officers using mobile devices for license lookups in the early 2000s. Every single device came back broken after three days. Turns out the officers ran over them with their cars because nobody ever asked if they actually wanted the technology. That's the enterprise adoption problem in a nutshell. Dean breaks down the three pillars most companies miss: having the right stakeholders including IT, marketing for brand consistency, and someone responsible for training and readiness. Skip any of those and you're setting yourself up for failure. And his take on AI is refreshing. He says the widely held belief that new technology ruins everything is simply wrong. It just makes space for new possibilities. His line: AI rewards the curious. Key Actionable Takeaways:Involve all stakeholders before software deployment, not after - Include IT for technical integration, marketing for brand consistency, and someone responsible for training and readiness; rolling out software Monday morning without user input guarantees resistance and low adoptionDefine problems, not solutions, then let experts solve them - Customers will request features based on what they know, but the real innovation comes from understanding the underlying problem they're trying to solve and approaching it differently, like Apple did with keyboards taking up 50% of the device when unused 95% of the timeBuild trust and confidence through presentation consistency - Whether it's pen-and-paper napkin math or polished iPad proposals, both can work if the customer trusts you; the technology should enhance confidence in the numbers you present, not replace the human element that builds belief in your ability to solve their problemWant more tips and strategies about creating frictionless digital experiences? Commissioner Sean Duryee did not begin his career aiming to lead the largest state policing agency in the nation. A former Army infantryman and small business owner, he joined the California Highway Patrol seeking camaraderie, service, and purpose. Nearly three decades later, after doing the job in front of him with excellence and embracing assignments he never planned on taking, he was unexpectedly appointed Commissioner. In this episode of The Chief Exchange, Commissioner Duryee reflects on how CHP has evolved over the past 30 years, from simple radio systems to advanced in car technology and modern policing tools. He shares why intelligence matters far less than work ethic, why doing a good job where you are opens doors you never saw coming, and why some of the most career shaping assignments are the ones you are not excited about at first. We discuss CHP recruits, why college athletes and military veterans are strong talent pools, and the biggest lesson he learned from coaching high school varsity basketball. From building confidence in leaders who hesitate to take the shot to savoring every season of your career, this conversation is about humility, discipline, growth, and enjoying the journey while you are in it.

Join Jim and Greg for the Monday 3 Martini Lunch as they as they have plenty to say about the shocking break-in and horrible security at the Louvre, the U.S. Army's major push into nuclear power, President Trump commuting the sentence of George Santos, and another California controversy that's literally explosive.First, after briefly noting the break-in and alarming security lapse at the Louvre, Jim and Greg turn to the U.S. Army's ambitious plan to install nine small nuclear reactors across key military bases. They applaud the move as a major step toward energy independence and boost warfighting capabilities.Next, they rip President Trump's commutation of convicted serial fraudster and expelled former New York Rep. George Santos after he served almost three months of a seven-year sentence. While still a convicted felon, Santos will no longer need to pay restitution to his victims. Unsurprisingly, Santos says he wants to focus on the future and not the past. Jim says this smells like Trump simply rewarding a political ally. Finally, they tackle the California uproar over closing Interstate 5 during the U.S. Marine Corps' 250th anniversary celebration at Camp Pendleton. Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the shutdown due to live ordnance, but the Marines insisted it wasn't necessary. California Highway Patrol officers report a small piece of shrapnel damaged one of their vehicles when an explosive went off prematurely. On the evening of May 10, 1988, a passing driver on Howard Street in Brockton, MA, stopped to investigate something unusual on the side of the road. When the driver got closer to what they thought was a bag, they realized it was actually the body of twenty-four-year-old Anthony LoConte, bleeding badly from injuries to his face and head.Initially, investigators believed LoConte was the victim of a hit-and-run accident; however, when the coroner examined the body, he discovered a bullet hole in the back of LoConte's head, indicating that he'd been murdered. It took twelve years for investigators to track down LoConte's killer, but in the winter of 2000, California Highway Patrol arrested Robert Morganti on drug charges and a quick background check connected them to a 1988 warrant for Morganti for the murder of Anthony LoConte. Robert Morganti was extradited back to Massachusetts, where he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for LoConte's murder. However, due to a controversial 2024 law concerning life sentences for young offenders, Robert Morganti could be granted parole in the near future.Consider signing the petition by visiting https://www.change.org/p/help-uncle-tony-uphold-mandatory-life-sentences-in-massachusetts-bill-s942 .Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBoston Globe. 1988.
