Welcome to Emet, the first classical Jewish prep school in the U.S. Founded in 2023 in New York City, Emet is pioneering a model that integrates Jewish wisdom with academic excellence, offering students an education where Judaism is infused seamlessly into academic subjects, from physical education (Krav Maga), to chemistry. Acts 2:42 describes the first church community, birthed on the Day of Pentecost. The outpouring of the Father's love and the power of the Holy Spirit welded together a high-hesed community united by the shared experience of God's hesed; His loyal, unfailing love that builds powerful bonds of attachment love to God and one another. This high water mark forever stands as the benchmark of true Spirit-filled community where everyone is under the revival anointing of ‘Hesed va Emet,' where all the believers were gripped and electrified by God's ‘mercy and truth.' The Holy Spirit continually seeks to reenact this ‘charismatic moment' where all the believers are swept up together in the flow of Hesed va Emet. The Holy Spirit is always at work to build high-hesed communities that replicate the experience of the early church gripped by divine love, power, glory, and truth. We hope you enjoy this message from Phil Mason.

A few weeks ago on Manhattan's Upper East Side, a new school opened its doors and welcomed its inaugural classes of students. Emet Classical Academy is America's first Jewish classical school and a project of Tikvah. It's designed for 5th- to 12th-grade students, and is an animated by a vision of the importance of Western civilization, the responsibilities of American citizenship, high standards of excellence in classical languages, math and science, and the power of music, poetry, and the visual arts. Joining that is a full curriculum in the Hebrew language, the Hebrew Bible and rabbinic literature, and the history, politics, and meaning of modern Israel. The establishment of Emet is even more significant given the current cultural, political, and ideological moment. Many of its pillars are deemed irrelevant, if not shameful, at the country's elite, ideologically charged private schools, many of which were abandoned by students in Emet's first classes. To discuss all this, Emet's founding head of school, Abe Unger, joins host Jonathan Silver. Together, they talk about Emet's founding, the cultural and educational questions to which Emet holds itself forth as an answer, and what it's like to learn in Emet. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The primary section of the Selihot service is the "Yag Middot," the recitation of G-d's Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, which was established by the Ansheh Kenesset Ha'gedola (Men of the Great Assembly). The Kaf Ha'haim (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) writes (581:5; listen to audio recording for precise citation) that it is forbidden to recite the "Yag Middot" without concentrating on the words' meaning. He adds that the words must be recited with fear, awe and trepidation, and with as intense concentration as possible. One should bow when reciting the words "Va'yaabor Hashem Al Panav Vayikra," and then stand straight for the recitation of "Hashem Hashem." The custom in Yeshivat Bet-El was to stand up straight when reciting "Vayikra," and then bow again for "Hashem Hashem." The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) writes that when reciting "Hashem Hashem," one should lift himself with his feet, as we do when reciting "Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh" in Nakdishach. One must make a brief pause between the first "Hashem" and the second, as they are separated by a "Pesik" note. The Kaf Ha'haim writes that one who recites them without a brief pause is liable to severe punishment. One should also briefly pause in between the words "Vayikra Be'shem" and "Hashem." One must recite the "Yag Middot" in a loud voice, just as Moshe Rabbenu declared the attributes in a loud voice. There is a debate among the commentators in identifying the thirteen attributes. We accept the view of the Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria of Safed, 1534-1572), who listed the attributes as follows: 1) Kel; 2) Rahum; 3) Hanun; 4) Erech; 5) Apayim; 6) Rab Hesed; 7) Emet; 8) Noser Hesed; 9) La'alafim; 10) Noseh Avon; 11) Va'fesha; 12) Ve'hata'a; 13) Ve'nakeh. It is proper to count the attributes with one's fingers while reciting them. The "Yag Middot" may only be recited together with a Minyan. If one is in the middle of the recitation when the congregation completes it, he may nevertheless continue and complete the recitation, since he had begun to recite the "Yag Middot" together with them. This is the ruling of the Ben Ish Hai (Parashat Ki-Tisa).

In this shiur we explore the Tefilah of Emet V'Yatziv. We look at how this prayer illustrates the earliest form of communal worship and synagogue prayer.
Emet is where the light of the Infinite enters our story. It is the engagement of truth without and within which requires a struggle with the shadow and the unknown. This class introduces emet, the struggle to embrace truth, as the fifth path of Jewish heroism. It begins with an exploration of the Torah's approach to truth as a holistic process with a many-faceted expression. Then it touches on the idea of the path of truth, contrasting the organic approach to the philosophical. Next we engage Yaakov as the archetype of truth, learning how his struggles with his own inner shadow and his twin brother defined his way in the world and made him an embodiment of emet from whom we all can learn. Listen to the end for a surprise addition about the Baal Shem Tov which asks what it means that the stories of the chassidim were all true!
In the final chapter of the sefer the Navi laments the falsehood and violence around him yetוַאֲנִי בַּיהֹוָה אֲצַפֶּה אוֹחִילָה לֵאלֹהֵי יִשְׁעִי יִשְׁמָעֵנִי אֱלֹהָי׃"Yet I will look to the LORD, I will wait for the God who saves me, My God will hear me". In this probing conversation with Rabbanit Yael Shimoni, we explore a central idea of the Sefat Emet regarding the function of Shabbat in the weekly schedule and how this concept can be translated into one's daily life.

God Reveals His Nurture Today we are going to look at one of my favorite words in the Bible – the great Hebrew word Hesed, which the ESV often translates as “steadfast love!” Read Exodus 34:1-9 The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and _____________, slow to ____________, and abounding in steadfast ______________ and truth, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers on the children and the children's children to the third and fourth generation. -Exodus 34:6-7 God will reveal more of Himself to those who are growing in their relationship with Him. The word abounding is the word Rab (H7227a), which occurs 414x in the Old Testament. It is often translated much, many, great, or abounding. Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love (Hesed) surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. -Psalm 32:10 How does God want us to think about Him when we think about His name? As the God who ABOUNDS in steadfast love (Hesed)! The word Hesed (H2617) occurs 249 times in the Hebrew Old Testament. The ESV usually translates it as “steadfast love.” The CSV usually translates it as “faithful love.” The KJV and others usually translate it mercy, lovingkindness, or goodness. One Jewish scholar translated it as grace. Surely goodness and mercy (Hesed) shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. -Psalm 23:6 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness/ truth. -Lam. 3:23 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness/ truth forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. -Proverbs 3:3 Who perfectly embodied God's Hesed (steadfast love, grace) and Emet (faithfulness, truth)? Jesus And the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as the of the only Son of the Father, full of (abounding in) grace and truth. -John 1:14 What special times will God's steadfast love matter to you? When you have sinned Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. -Psalm 51:1 When you love those who have sinned against you with a Godlike love. And I will betroth you to Me forever. I will betroth you to Me in in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord. -Hosea 2:19-20 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. -Hosea 6:6 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness (HESED), and to walk humbly with yout God. -Micah 6:8 When you are reaching out to those who don't yet know God. And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is this not what I said when I was yet in my country? This is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; FOR I KNEW that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster.” -Jonah 4:2 He (Jesus) is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always live to make intercession for them. -Hebrews 7:25

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
There is a custom to refrain from bitter, sour or tart foods on Rosh Hashanah, to symbolize our hopes for a sweet, pleasant year. The Talmud teaches that "Simana Milta Hi," which means that symbolic acts have significance. One must therefore not belittle the customs regarding the foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah as symbols of our prayers for the new year, as these customs are very significant and indeed have an effect. There is a common practice to eat a pomegranate on Rosh Hashanah, as the abundant seeds symbolize our hopes that we will come before God with abundant Zechuyot (merits). Interestingly, the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) writes that on Rosh Hashanah one should eat specifically a sweet pomegranate, and he emphasizes this point several times. Of course, the pomegranates we have today generally have a bitter, pungent taste. It appears that in Baghdad, where the Ben Ish Hai lived, they had sweet pomegranates. In any event, in light of the custom to refrain from bitter foods on Rosh Hashanah, it would seem proper to dip the pomegranate in sugar to at least diminish its pungency. It is also interesting to note that the custom of the Ben Ish Hai on Rosh Hashanah was to dip an apple in sugar, and not in honey. Perhaps this custom was based on Kabbalistic teaching. Regardless, everyone should follow his family's custom in this regard. It should be noted that the symbolic significance of the apple on Rosh Hashanah extends beyond the simple fact that it is a sweet food. The Zohar refers to Gan Eden as the "Hakal Tapuhin Kadishin" – "the orchard of sweet apples." The apples eaten on Rosh Hashanah thus symbolize not only sweetness, but also Gan Eden, which is certainly an auspicious sign as we begin the new year. Furthermore, the apple has a pleasing appearance, a pleasing fragrance and a pleasing taste. It is pleasing and enjoyable in every which way, symbolic of our hopes that the new year will bring joy and success in all areas of life. Furthermore, the Ben Ish Hai explained the significance of this custom on the basis of Kabbalistic teaching. During the period from Nissan until Tishri, we are under the influence of the Sefira ("emanation") of Malchut, which is the lowest Sefira and receives its strength from the higher Sefirot. Once Tishri sets in, we move into the Sefira of Tiferet, the highest Sefira, which gives to the lower Sefirot. The Sefira of Tiferet is the Sefira of Yaakob Abinu, who represents Torah, and who transmitted the power of Torah to subsequent generations. Tiferet is also associated with the attribute of "Emet" (truth), and on Rosh Hashanah we stand in judgment, which is based upon God's attribute of absolute truth. The apple, the Ben Ish Hai writes, is associated with the Sefira of Tiferet, and we therefore eat it on Rosh Hashanah, which marks the point of transition from the Sefira of Malchut to the Sefira of Tiferet.Of course, the vast majority of us are not versed in Kabbala, and thus do not truly understand these concepts. Nevertheless, they demonstrate the depth and profundity of these customs that we observe on Rosh Hashanah. Besides the plays on words, such as "Yitamu Son'enu" for the "Tamar" (date), and "Yikartu Son'enu" for the "Karti" (leek), there are much deeper concepts underlying these customs, and we should therefore observe them in accordance with time-honored tradition.Summary: It is proper to refrain from bitter and sour foods on Rosh Hashanah. Pomegranates should preferably be dipped in some sugar before they are eaten on Rosh Hashanah, because they otherwise taste pungent. Some have the custom to dip the apple in sugar, instead of honey, and each person should follow his family's tradition. The customs regarding the special foods on Rosh Hashanah are based upon profound Kabbalistic concepts and thus should not be belittled or neglected.
