I've heard it said that the quality of our questions determines the quality of our lives. I agree with this idea. I mean, think about it: how many times in your life have you learned something super important just by asking? Children understand this but, sadly, as we age and become more self-conscious of asking questions, we tend to lose this skill. But with a little effort, we can retrain ourselves to engage in asking questions. Dr. Jeff Wetzler (https://transcendeducation.org/) cares deeply about people leaning into this ability and has written a book I loved called Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs In Leadership and Life. I am hardly alone in my love for this book. Harvard Business School professor and SuperPsyched guest, Dr. Amy Edmondson said, “…learning how to ask others what they truly think, know, and feel has never been more important.” I couldn't agree more! So, listen in as Jeff shares how to rebuild our abilities to ask, a crucial life skill we may have lost along the way.
IN EPISODE 196: We access more wisdom when we ask better questions. In Episode 196, Jeff Wetzler reveals the art of the ask and provides a five-part plan for raising our results and relationships through more powerful, productive questions. We cover lots of territory: How to frame questions with greater curiosity and candor; how to scan for nonverbal "tells" that provide valuable information; and how to listen with purpose. The more we ask, the more we learn -- and after listening to Jeff, you'll be ready to get the answers you always wanted but never had. We walk around the world thinking that we've got it figured out, thinking that we know how this person is and what motivates them and what the right answer is in this situation. And so, we're trapped in what I call a “certainty loop,” where the pre-existing beliefs and assumptions we have about the world lead us to walk into any situation and just size it up in ways that essentially reinforce what we already thought and believed. And we get that sense of, “Here we go again. This is how they always are.” And so all of that keeps us stuck. And we don't even realize there's something to ask about. WENDY GROUNDS: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. I'm Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates. We like to talk to you twice a month to talk about what matters to you as a professional in the field of project management. And we like to bring top experts to speak to you. And today we have someone. His name is Jeff Wetzler. He's written a book called “Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs in Leadership and Life.” And when Jeff sent the book to us, Bill and I both read it and were completely impressed. And we thought, now, this is something we can talk to project managers about. Jeff has been on a quarter century quest to transform learning opportunities. He blends a unique set of leadership experiences in the field of business and education. And he's been a management consultant to the world's top corporations, and the Chief Learning Officer at Teach for America. Most recently he's a co-CEO of Transcend, an innovation organization. BILL YATES: We have so much to learn from this book and from Jeff's input or description of it. For project managers, we ask questions all the time. And quite frankly, some of us are good at it, and some of us are not. Some of us are growing in this area, and this is an opportunity to take a conversation with a guy who's written a book and researched how to ask questions that are effective, that are not throwaway questions, that go deep, that remove some of the barriers that people have to actually sharing what they're feeling, what they're thinking, what their experiences have shown them. And what I love about it is he's got a five-step approach. I love a five-step approach, and he has that. He lays that out for us. And we're going to walk through it with Jeff so we can understand how can we get better at asking questions that are effective. WENDY GROUNDS: Hey, Jeff. Welcome to Manage This. Thank you for joining us. JEFF WETZLER: Oh, it's so great to be with you. WENDY GROUNDS: We are going to ask you a lot of questions. We're just going to pick up from the [crosstalk]. Jeff is the author of Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs in Leadership and Life*. Leaders are not the only people who need to have difficult conversations in the workplace. Yet, leaders set the tone for how much people are willing and able to talk about hard things. In this episode, Jeff and I discuss how leaders can make it easier for those important conversations to happen. Key Points In one study of managers, most people admitted to remaining silent with their bosses and nearly 75% said colleagues also felt uncomfortable speaking up. Meet people on their own turf. Others are more likely to speak up if they are in a setting that's more comfortable for them. Leaders should consider shifting timing and/or medium to one that's of the preference for the person who doesn't have power. Explain why you're asking about a topic and your intention for a conversation at the start. Providing context prevents people from having to guess at your agenda. Set a mutual agenda for a conversation by asking a question like, “In addition to this, what else should be part of our conversation today?” Establish a tone for open communicating by radiating resilience. Words like these might help: “If I were in your shoes, I might be feeling frustrated or even resentful. If that's how you're feeling, I would understand completely. Please don't hold back.” Resources Mentioned Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs in Leadership and Life* by Jeff Wetzler Interview Notes Download my interview notes in PDF format (free membership required). Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs In Leadership and Life by Jeff Wetzler https://amzn.to/3UWL5cT Globally recognized expert on learning and leadership, Jeff Wetzler offers a hands-on, surprisingly effective way to find out what others really think, know, and feel. Ask leads to smarter decisions, more creative solutions, and deeper relationships. Too often, we don't find out what's truly on others' hearts and minds because we don't know how to ask the right questions in the right ways. Co-founder of Transcend and former international business consultant and Teach for America executive Jeff Wetzler wants to show you how to fix that. In Ask, he brings you a powerful method called The Ask Approach™, based on a simple premise: that tapping into what other people truly think, know, and feel is a game-changing superpower. In Section I, Wetzler reveals the most common things that people think and feel but often keep to themselves, as well as the key reasons why they choose to withhold information that could be valuable to you and your organization. Section II delves into the five steps of the Ask Approach, each answering an essential question: Choose Curiosity: How can you awaken your curiosity to make new discoveries and unexpected connections? Make it Safe: How do you make it easier for people to tell you hard things? Pose Quality Questions: What questions will best tap into the wisdom of anyone you ask? Listen to Learn: How can you hear what someone is really trying to tell you? Reflect & Reconnect: How do you turn talk into action? Section III helps you make asking an everyday superpower – not only for yourself but also for your team and organization, as well as for the next generation and society at large. Mental Health and Addiction. 1 How It Affects You or People Around You. Introduction: What is Mental Health? When a person cannot deal with the everyday… When a person is angry, frustrated or saddened by seemingly mundane things in life. A person who may not find happiness even when they seem to be trying very hard, nothing seems to fill that empty hole. At times the new road, the new adventure is full of hope and optimism. However, that positivity is quickly destroyed by negativity, self-doubt and sadness. When going out seems like an amazing idea, yet mental illness quickly sets in to create a state of mind that prevents a person from going. How to Improve: Check your Mental Health Sometimes mental health tips can help and quickly improve one's state of mind. Other times they can do more harm than good. Not everyone responds the same way. This is what happened to a very close family member of mine. He did his best to cope with the struggles of every day but the negativity that hovered above him like a dark cloud was too much. Resorting to eating for temporary happiness was one way of coping with the sadness, frustration and whirlwind of emotions that accompanied him. Frustrated with himself, terrible drivers and slow cashiers were some of his aggravations. Not being able to deal with stupid people was a whole other level of anger and negativity. All these seemingly little things turned into big things. There didn't seem to be a way to improve his mental health. The so-called tips to improve mental health didn't work. Mental Illness and the Workplace Mental health at work was on another level. The immense amount of frustration was at a boiling point every day. Nothing worked out. There were no positive steps in any direction, a micromanaging boss and kiss ass yes-men were not helping his fragile mind. Workplace mental illness and work-related stress were at a breaking point. This may or may not have had something to do with him being let go from a very good position. We will never know if it was COVID related or not, but the end result was a dismissal, Mental Illness in the Family The worst part of all this was that there was no support from his bossy, entitled and emotionally unavailable spouse and very little support from friends. A very close sibling and a family dog were the only sources of happiness and laughter. When going home from work is worse than staying at work, what escape does someone have? Having a family member around with mental illness or depression is no fun for anyone, including the depressed person. Conclusion: The Importance of Mental Health in Everyday Life There is no quick fix here… The end result was to sign into a facility for a month that was ready to help and assist with his mental health. Heading into a place where one would be closed off from the outside world was very distressing. No cell phone, very little computer and telephone time was stressful. Smartphones are much the same as a numbing agent or a painkiller. Endless scrolling numbs the pain and like drugs, it helps one's mind disconnect from the stress of the moment or the day. It is a Band-Aid and being buried in it is nothing but temporary. The mental health, the depression and anger all come crawling back bit by bit and slowly it all takes over as it did before. The importance of good mental health and a healthy coping mechanism is something people take for granted. Sometimes one needs to take drastic measures in life to get better and to seek help before it is too late. If you know of someone dealing with mental health issues, please reach out and help as much as you can. mental health, mental illness, mental disorder, mental health tips, how to improve your mental health, how to be mentally healthy, workplace mental illness, work-related stress, family member with a mental illness, family member with depression, depression, burn out, addiction, alcoholic, bi polar, bi-polar, anxiety, dr --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message

And it's very different. It's very different than, I think, what people perceive where their food is coming from.” - Kristen “If I can't shoot the bow, if I can't pull the trigger… How could I possibly eat that animal? Like, if I don't have enough respect for that creature, I shouldn't be eating it. .. It never sat right with me and I never felt like I was being like the truest version of myself.” - Kristen “If I don't give myself the chance, and I keep going down this road, I'll constantly ask, ‘What if I would have done that?' ‘What if I would have actually made those choices?' Today Nicholas sits down to talk with Chris Harder. Chris host’s podcast, For The Love of Money, and in today’s episode, he offers us a lot of practical and applicable things you can do to exponentially grow your income, make a bigger impact with your money and have fun while doing it. Time Stamped Show Notes: [ 2:30 ] Working with Your Significant Other. [ 9:00 ] Learning from the People Around You. [ 13:00 ] Material Things [ 16:34 ] Podcast Inspiration: Money Mindset [ 21:17 ] Experiencing Resistance [ 28:38 ] Personal Growth [ 35:09 ] Getting into Giving [ 38:21 ] Daily Actionable Items Takeaways: Is it easy to work with your significant other? The number one thing you have to learn is communication. When you come home you can’t communicate in a hierarchy. You have to learn what form of communication resonates with your partner. How do you want me to react? What is the best response that I can have to this question or that? At the end of the day, you are two people in love so you may get passionate or allow yourself to be short with one another. Have patience and be open to learning with each other. Your ceiling is our floor: you get to take the struggles someone else has been throw and experienced and use their mistakes as a launchpad for you to bypass the mistakes and continue growing and learning. You don’t have to lose it all, you don’t have to have a giant wake up moment. If you are willing to invest in learning and listening you can avoid a lot of mistakes yourself. If it is a car or a home or a certain bag that has you waking up to hustle and kick butt, as a result of hustling you can create a revenue machine, your company. Once you get the car, the bag, the house, a few things happen. Number one, you're revenue machine is up and thriving, number two, you get what you wanted and you will usually have a moment when you realize that the thing you got is cool but it’s not as cool as you originally thought, what else is there? Then you’ll be motivated to see what else you can do with your money, you’ll want to find the ways that you're an influence and impact. The ultimate reward is making an impact. Most people know what they want to be doing right now but they are not moving forward for one reason or another. Many times the thing holding them back is fear, fear of being judged, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection. The key is figuring out what fear is holding you back, acknowledged it, and then list all of the possible outcomes. When you take a look at all the outcomes of doing what you want to do you will realize that the worst thing that could happen is not that bad, you make your peace and learn to live with it. The world needs what you have to offer. How dare you, in order to protect yourself, not share your gifts and ability with the world. When you hold back, you’re not only selling yourself short but you're also holding back on anyone who could benefit from you. One of Chris’ favorite way to get into giving is to attend a high-end philanthropic gala. Find a cause you love, go to their gala, buy a couple of tickets, they will be a little bit expensive but the money goes towards that cause. Being surrounded by philanthropists and business members around you is inspirational and it’s a great time to network, all of the doers and all the influencers are there. There is a special bond created when you giving together. I recently spoke to a group of insurance agents about tools that can help you hire the right people for your team. I use and train organizations to use the DISC personality system to determine someone's wiring and how they react to their environment. This system is one tool to help you hire new people and ensure a good fit for that position. Before I spoke, the leader of the event played a short video of Steve Jobs discussing success. The video was titled Success is a Result of Passion and People Around You. It is only eighty-nine seconds long but contains sound advice on why some people succeed and some do not. First, Jobs stated that Passion is what keeps you going when things get tough. If you are not passionate about what you are doing, you will quit when it becomes difficult. He says if you do not love it, you will fail. Second, it is imperative that you be a great talent scout. You need a team of great people around you and know how to recognize them. I also want to let you know about a new podcast entitled EntreLeadership from the Dave Ramsey organization. It is loaded with great advice on how to run a successful business. You can find it at Itunes or you can go to EntreLeadership Podcast. Last weeks podcast was titled “When Failure is Caused by Leadership.” The failure of a team member to perform is not always the fault of the individual. Many times the leader did not equip that person to win. Knowing the difference can be vital to an organization. Have passion, love what you do and know how to find and equip the right people. Have a great week! Pierce P.S. Hiring the wrong people can be costly. Contact me for more information about using the DISC Personality Profile in your organization.
