Have you ever looked around at your family, friends, and the people you love most and wondered, Why do I still feel lonely? If you're in midlife, you may be surprised by how often this feeling shows up—even when nothing seems wrong. In this episode, I share some of my own experiences with loneliness during this season of life, including the transition of my daughter leaving for the Navy, changing family dynamics, evolving friendships, and the quiet emotional shifts that often happen in midlife. We talk about why loneliness isn't always about being alone, how grief and transition often fuel these feelings, and how God can use these moments to reveal deeper needs, bring healing, and guide us into new seasons of connection. If you ask people what they most want from the people closest to them, it usually comes down to one thing: to be understood. Not fixed, not corrected, not molded into someone else's image, just truly seen for who they are. This week we're drawing from Psalm 145, one of the richest portraits of God in all of Scripture, to explore what it means to love someone well. God knows exactly how each of us is formed, and He relates to us accordingly. When we take the time to understand the people we love, watching them, asking questions, listening without rushing to fix, we free them to grow in the direction they were actually designed to go. So here's the question worth sitting with today: who in your life needs to feel understood, and what would it take for you to really see them?Pursuing God with Gene Appel is designed to help you pursue God, build community, and unleash compassion. Grounded in Scripture and shaped by Eastside's conviction that God's grace is for everyone, each episode invites you to discover God's presence and activity in your life.
The inner critic doesn't just disappear with more success. Academy Award-winning actor, writer, and artist Riz Ahmed shares why success, recognition, and achievement can never replace self-worth. He opens up about identity, shame, the inner critic, and the pressure to perform, revealing how life can start to feel like one long audition when your value depends on other people’s approval. Through a deeply personal health crisis and years of chasing validation, Riz discovered the power of vulnerability, gratitude, and self-acceptance. This conversation is a powerful reminder that true freedom begins when you stop proving yourself to the world and start defining your worth for yourself. In this episode you'll learn: How to Stop Seeking Constant Validation How to Quiet Your Inner Critic How to Find Flow Instead of Chasing Success How to Let Go of Who Others Expect You to Be How to Stay Grounded Through Life’s Highs and Lows How to Build Self-Worth Beyond Achievement How to Find Freedom in Vulnerability How to Live More Fully in the Present Moment Growth isn’t about becoming someone else; it’s about having the courage to be fully yourself. Send us Fan MailYou pull into the driveway after a full day. Patients, staff, meetings, inbox, all of it. You open the door and immediately there are more people who need something from you. And you have nothing left.If you have ever sat in your car in the driveway just a little longer than you needed to, you are not broken. You are not someone who doesn't love the people waiting for you inside. You are someone who has been on stage all day with no time off stage. And today we are going to fix that. What we cover in this episode:On Stage vs. Off Stage: What It Actually MeansOn stage is any time your energy is going outward. You are performing in some kind of role, whether that is physician, leader, parent, partner, or PTA secretary. It includes clinic, charting, inbox, staff interactions, and yes, family time counts too if you are managing emotions and playing a role.Off stage is genuine time where there is no performance element. You are just a human being allowed to exist. A solo walk, reading for pleasure, crafting, time with friends who know all your secrets and expect nothing from you. It is not scrolling social media while you tell yourself you are resting. It is actual restoration. The Gray ZoneSome time feels like it should be off stage but is actually draining you. Social media is the big one. If you are reaching for your phone out of habit and putting it down feeling worse, that is gray zone time, not off stage time. We have to be honest about this or the audit will not work.Introversion, Extroversion, and What You Actually NeedThis is a spectrum, not a binary. More introverted physicians need quiet solo time to recharge. More extroverted physicians might actually need more time with people they genuinely choose, not just the people at work. Neither is better. Both require intention. And where you fall on that spectrum can shift depending on stress, illness, life season, and what you are carrying right now.The AuditThis is a doing episode. Here is what we are walking through together:Step 1: Map one to two weeks of your actual schedule. One week if your schedule is fixed. Two or more if you are a hospitalist, nocturnist, or work variable hours. Include work time AND home time. Both matter.Step 2: Label everything. On stage, off stage, or gray zone. Be honest. Family time that feels like a performance goes in the on stage column even if you love your family deeply.Step 3: Look at the ratio. Where is your off stage time? Is there any? How does that balance feel?Step 4: Reflect. Does this match what you actually need given where you are on the introversion/extroversion spectrum? What would need to shift, even just slightly, to give you more of what you need?Making Changes Without Flipping the TableSmall shifts create sustainable change. Before you decide you need to leave medicine, consider whether you have actually had any off stage time lately. Not as a reason to stay if you truly need to go, but because we do not make our best decisions from a completely depleted state. Protect one or two off stage blocks per week. Are you praying specifically for the people you love? In today's Words From The Word devotion, Pastor Roderick Webster opens Ephesians chapter 1, verses 15 through 23 (KJV) to show us how the Apostle Paul prayed — not vaguely, but with detail, purpose, and deep spiritual intention for the believers at Ephesus. You might be asking — does it really matter how specific my prayers are? How do I know if my prayers are being answered? What was Paul actually asking God to do for these people? And what does it mean to have the eyes of your understanding enlightened? In this devotion you will discover:- Why Paul gave thanks before he even made his requests- How Paul prayed for wisdom, revelation, and knowledge of God for believers- What it means to have your understanding enlightened about God's calling and inheritance- Why Christ's power and authority should shape the way we pray- How specific prayer helps you recognize when God answersIf someone has asked you to pray for them, this devotion will transform how you approach that responsibility. Have you ever felt like you've rebelled too much to be loved by God? Jesus once told a story about a son who felt that very same way. He demanded his inheritance early, left home, wasted it all, it says, on wild living. When he ran out of money, food, and his friends deserted him, he decided to go back to his father and beg him to let him return—not as a son, but as a servant. And he expected rejection. But while he was still far away, his father saw him in the distance and ran to him to embrace him. And he declared a celebration, saying, “...this son of mine was dead, but now he has returned to life!” God loves you just like that. You can come to Him no matter how far away you feel. Have you been avoiding God, overwhelmed by shame? Today, He invites you to come and be embraced. Always remember, there is hope with God. I'm Andrew Palau. Real estate success isn't just about bigger numbers, bigger awards, or bigger months — it's about what your success is costing you behind the scenes. In this episode, I share a deeply personal story involving a $100,000 loss, a federal investigation, and a moment with my daughter that completely reframed how I think about ambition, pursuit, and what actually matters. This conversation will challenge how you define real estate success and help you examine whether your current path is building the life you actually want — or quietly undermining it.Most agents are trained to chase production at all costs. The industry celebrates volume, rankings, and income, but rarely asks about your heart, your home, or your spiritual health. We unpack how easy it is for high performers to normalize unhealthy tradeoffs and call it growth. Drawing from Scripture and real-world experience, this episode explores how the pursuit of more can slowly choke out purpose, relationships, and calling if left unchecked. You'll hear a practical and faith-grounded framework for redefining real estate success through stewardship instead of accumulation, alignment instead of applause, and presence instead of pressure. We talk honestly about work-life balance and why it feels so hard for driven agents, especially those who genuinely love serving clients but struggle to turn work off. If you've ever felt torn between production and presence, this message will hit home.We also dive into time freedom and what it actually looks like in a service-based business, along with time management for real estate agents who want structure without burnout. Instead of hustle without limits, we discuss building guardrails that protect what matters most while still allowing you to grow. This includes candid discussion around real estate agent integrity — not just in transactions, but in how you lead your family, steward your schedule, and pursue your calling. At the core, this episode is about finding meaning in real estate career growth beyond commissions and closings. It's about becoming the kind of person who can sustain success without sacrificing faith, family, or peace. You'll be invited to ask better questions, examine hidden costs, and realign your ambition with values that last longer than market cycles. If you want real estate success that is sustainable, faith-aligned, and deeply rooted — not fragile and performance-driven — this episode will give you both conviction and clarity.Key Takeaways:Real estate success is not just production — it's what your pursuit is costing your faith, family, and relationships. The most dangerous goals are often the ones the industry loudly celebrates. Chasing more money and recognition can quietly choke out purpose and spiritual growth. Ambition is good — but it must be aligned, structured, and value-driven. Presence at home is a truer scorecard than awards and rankings. Build systems that protect margin, not just income. Measure success by stewardship, integrity, and lasting fruit — not just numbers.Connect with Me!
In this heartfelt, faith-centered episode, Lindsey Maestas and Lenya Heitzig have a powerful conversation inspired by Sheologie's core message of "calling women up, not out": a reminder that growth happens through truth and not shame. P.S. Have you read my new book, Don't Burn Your Own House Down, yet?! We are still in launch month so EVERY bit of support from this community helps!! I have a goal of selling 120 books this week!! If you're single or engaged, this book will prepare your heart for marriage. If you've been married for 1-50 years, I wrote this book to help you become more intentional with your time and energy toward the most important relationship in your life! Please gift it to a friend and share on social, and once you've read it, please put your review on Amazon, Barnes & Target! Every bit helps. In this conversation with Lenya, we explore how our thoughts shape who we become, why people-pleasing often disguises itself as love, and how emotional overfunctioning can hinder us from trusting God in our relationships. If you ever find yourself trying to control outcomes, rescue others, or manage everyone's emotions, it's easy to create pressure rather than peace. Lindsey and Lenya discuss how: What you think about consistently shapes who you are becoming People pleasing can turn into trying to save someone who isn't even willing to save themselves Overhelping friends can actually interrupt what Jesus is trying to teach them Emotional triggers in marriage don't have to explode into conflict, they can be gently deconstructed Therapy, self-awareness, and faith can work together in healing Differences in marriage don't have to collide, they can become places of laughter, humility, and compromise Fear can cause us to "lasso" our spouse and limit the very growth God is inviting them into This episode is for the woman who feels responsible for everyone's well-being, who carries anxiety about her marriage, or who struggles to release control and trust God with the people she loves most. I pray you walk away with a clearer understanding of emotional boundaries, spiritual surrender, and how to stop trying to be the Holy Spirit in someone else's life. Learn more about Reload Love here!

This discussion is designed for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of how financial decisions made today shape long-term stability—whether you are navigating a major life transition like divorce or simply trying to be more intentional about your future. Together, they break down complex topics like estate planning instruments, as well as a discussion about retirement and beneficiary designations in a way that is approachable and grounded in real life. Ethan and Stephanie bring a fiduciary perspective focused on clarity, coordination, and thoughtful planning as opposed to fear or urgency. This episode is not about reacting to crisis. Estate planning is one of those things most of us know we should do but avoid anyway. In this episode, we sit down with trust and estate strategist Robin Ingber to break it down in a way that actually makes sense. We talk about the real differences between wills and trusts, why planning for incapacity matters just as much as planning for death, and how having a plan in place is really about protecting the people you love and making their lives easier. Robin keeps the conversation practical, relatable, and even a little funny while clearing up the myth that estate planning is only for the wealthy. If you have been putting this off or have no idea where to start, this episode is a great first step. Let's dive in!

If you've been feeling emotionally drained from relationship conflict or disagreeing with people that you love, this episode is for you. Despite how technology and social media have made it incredibly easy to stay connected with family, friends, and our communities, many people feel more divided and disconnected than ever. That's why I'm thrilled to introduce you to Kelsey Blahnik, a clinical social worker and therapist who works on the front lines of emotional and relational tension. From families and friendships to workplaces, in our increasingly divided political culture, Kelsey helps people navigate conflict without losing themselves or the people they care about. Kelsey is the creator and author of The And Way: Assertive Peacemaking in a Divided World, a powerful therapeutic framework that challenges conventional behavior. She explains that most of us believe we have only two options in conflict—fight or flight—when, in reality, there's nuance to consider when choosing the best path forward. We explore how to set boundaries without burning bridges, speak your truth without escalating tension, and how to hold both accountability and compassion at the same time. If polarized relationships, "either/or" thinking, and day-to-day conversations are adding stress to your life, this episode will give you a practical way to navigate conflict with clarity, self-respect, and inner peace. What if the reason you're holding back isn't fear of failure—but guilt about leaving others behind? In this episode, I dig into one of the most surprising mindset blocks I've faced as a business owner: the belief that if I succeed too much, I'll lose the people I care about. This idea comes from The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, a book I've read five times—and each time, it reveals something new. This time, it showed me how old loyalty patterns and hidden guilt were still shaping how I lead, grow, and show up. If you've ever felt conflicted about leveling up, this episode will help you see what's really going on—and what to do about it. What We Cover: Why Growth Feels Risky – The fear that success will cost you connection with friends, family, or your roots. The Loyalty Trap – How childhood beliefs about “not outshining” others can follow you into business. Replacing the Narrative – Why I used to believe I couldn't grow my business and have a strong relationship. Seeing the Pattern – How this hidden belief was still shaping my decisions in 2025. What I Believe Now – A better story that allows growth, love, and leadership to coexist. Success doesn't have to mean separation. You can grow—and still stay grounded. But only if you choose the right story. Ben brings decades of experience working with complex systems and translates it into clear, usable guidance for families: where the real risks are, why common “parental controls” often fail, and how addictive algorithms, anonymous chat, and AI are reshaping childhood in ways we can't ignore. Samin Nosrat's previous cookbook, Salt Fat Acid Heat, was a runaway success and ultimately became a Netflix show. But while she was shining professionally, Samin was struggling personally. In her much-anticipated second cookbook, Good Things: Recipes and Rituals to Share with People You Love, she shares how food helped her reconnect with community.sparkling banana bread (Makes one 8 × 8-inch square)Packed with both mashed and whole bananas, this is my ideal banana bread. To maximize the ratio of the cinnamon-sugar topping to the moist, flavorful interior, I bake it in a cake pan. In the oven, the topping transforms into a sparkling crust that releases wave after wave of cinnamon aroma with each bite. For the banana bread1-1/2 cups (203g) all-purpose flour2 teaspoons (6g) kosher salt1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon ground cinnamon1-1/4 cups (288g) well-mashed ripe banana (about 3 bananas; see Note)3/4 packed cup (150g) dark brown sugar2⁄3 cup (140g) neutral oil1⁄3 cup (80g) buttermilk or sour cream, at room temperature1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract2 large eggs, at room temperatureFor the topping6 tablespoons granulated sugar1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt2 very ripe bananas, halved lengthwise• • •Adjust an oven rack to the upper-middle position and preheat to 350°F. Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line with a parchment sling and spray the parchment. To make the banana bread, in a large bowl, whisk together the flour, kosher salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mashed banana, brown sugar, oil, buttermilk, vanilla, and eggs until evenly combined.Stir the banana mixture into the dry ingredients and mix to combine, making sure to incorporate all the dry flour at the bottom of the bowl.To make the topping, in a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and flaky salt.Pour the batter into the prepared pan and then let the pan drop from a height of 3 inches onto the countertop a couple times to release any air bubbles that might have gotten trapped inside the batter. Sprinkle the topping in a thick, even layer over the batter, then gently place the banana halves, cut-side up, atop the batter, cutting into pieces as needed to make them fit.Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, until a toothpick inserted around the halved bananas emerges clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing. (Alternatively, leave the cake to cool in the pan and serve it directly from there.) Wrap and store at room temperature for up to 3 days.

In this week's episode, Kayla and Taylor discuss Lidia Yuknavitch's 2022 novel Thrust. Topics include chicken stock, Neptune's gin, water apocalypse, the Statue of Liberty (and Clueless quotes about it), the sexy bits of the novel, toxic masculinity (oh hey, we know her), and feeling your feelings. Plus, we talk about The Life of a Showgirl (of course). This week's drink: Sea Foam via Rhubarb & LavenderINGREDIENTS:Sea salt foam:2 oz liquid egg whites, equivalent to two egg whites½ oz lemon juice¼ tsp sea saltCocktail:2 oz gin, such as Hendrick's Neptunia1 oz simple syrup½ oz lemon juicedried seaweed, for garnishINSTRUCTIONS:In a mixing bowl combine the egg whites, lemon juice, and sea salt. Beat on high until there are soft peaks. The extra liquid from the lemon juice will prevent the foam from becoming too stiff and some liquid will separate from the foam. Set aside while making the cocktail. Makes enough for 2 to 3 cocktails. In a cocktail shaker add the gin, simple syrup, and lemon juice. Add ice, then cover and shake for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain into a coupe glass. Spoon a layer of foam on top. Garnish with dried seaweed if desired. In our polarized world, we're facing an epidemic of relational silence. Maybe it's your child who's pulled away. Your spouse who's emotionally checked out. A friend who's gone cold after a disagreement. A sister who won't return your calls. The silence is deafening, and it hits us at the deepest level because we're wired for connection. When those we love most won't engage, we long for restoration, and it makes us feel worthless, unlovable, and much much more. Happy Friday, Regulars! This week's RGF hits deep. Kev's been doing the work in therapy, and he's cracking open some big realizations… like why setting boundaries feels so uncomfortable, why we keep absorbing everyone else's emotions, and why people act weird when we start changing. When you've spent your life being the fixer or the feeler, it's hard to suddenly stop carrying the weight. But healing means learning to show up for yourself, too. Kev opens up about how he's finally learning to hold space for others without abandoning himself, and how he's navigating the emotional pushback that can come when we grow. It's a reminder that saying “no” doesn't make you selfish and growth isn't always glamorous, but peace? Peace is worth it. Tune in, laugh with us, and remember… you're not alone in this healing thing. What do you do when the outcome you want feels out of reach? When the people you love are walking through things you can't fix…And when control feels like a survival tactic you just can't shake? In this episode, I sit down with Jodie Berndt—speaker, author, and the voice behind the Praying the Scriptures series—for a conversation that goes way beyond parenting.Whether you're single, married, parenting toddlers, teenagers, or simply trying to love the people in your life well… this episode is for you.We talk about:• Why surrender is at the heart of every healthy relationship (marriage, parenting, or otherwise)• What it really means to trust God when your heart feels protective, anxious, or out of control• How to pray Scripture over your marriage (and why praying for your spouse changes you, too)• What to do when God feels silent• Releasing the need for quick fixes and embracing the long game of faith• Identity in seasons when prayers feel unansweredThis is not a conversation about perfect prayers or tidy outcomes. It's about choosing trust over fear… surrender over striving… and remembering that God cares even more than we do.Where to find Jodie:Website: jodieberndt.comInstagram: @jodie_berndt
