How did we get to modern divorce rates? Divorce laws and practices have evolved significantly throughout history, from ancient codified rules to modern no-fault divorce systems. The earliest evidence of divorce laws can be found in ancient Mesopotamia, with the Code of Hammurabi (1760 BC) outlining divorce procedures. Modern divorce patterns emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, influenced by changing societal views on marriage and the concept of "love marriages". In the United States, the shift towards no-fault divorce, exemplified by California's 1969 law, dramatically increased divorce rates. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we're tackling a topic that's kept too many women trapped in painful marriages: divorce. If you've ever been told "God hates divorce" or made to feel like leaving your abusive husband is somehow worse than what he's doing to you, this episode is specifically for you. We'll dig into some fascinating research by Dr. Valerie Hobbs on how conservative Christian sermons frame divorce - and let me tell you, what's being preached often doesn't match reality. Here's what you'll discover in this episode:The surprising biblical truth about divorce, including the fact that God Himself got a divorce (Jeremiah 3:8) and what this means for women in harmful marriagesHow common Bible verses about divorce are routinely misinterpreted and weaponized against women seeking safety and freedomThe shocking difference between why women initiate divorce (abuse, infidelity, and substance abuse) versus men's reasons (falling out of love, different lifestyles)How the ancient marriage certificate (ketubah) actually protected women's rights and gave them grounds for divorce - completely changing how we should understand Jesus' teachingsThis isn't just theological debate - this is about real women making heart-wrenching decisions every day. I've walked this path myself, and I know the spiritual anguish of believing God wants you to stay in a destructive marriage. If you're questioning what you've been taught about divorce, experiencing emotional or spiritual abuse, or supporting someone who is, please listen to this episode. You'll discover that God cares about your emotional and spiritual safety and wellbeing, and that leaving an abusive marriage just might be the most faithful thing you can do.Read the show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources: Dr. Valerie Hobbs' groundbreaking study that I used for this episode, "The Discourse of Divorce in Conservative Christian Sermons."Some related Flying Free Podcast episodes you may be interested in: “God Doesn't Hate ALL Divorce,” “How Do I Know if Divorce Is the Right Choice for Me?” and “How To Tell Your Kids You're Getting Divorced.”

There are plenty of things about being an attorney that make it seem less than desirable as a potential career choice. The long hours are pretty much a given and there's a reason that most portrayals of lawyers include some allusion to titanic amounts of stress. But one thing that I would venture a guess most law students don't consider is how genuinely uncomfortable and awkward our profession can truly be. Unless you're devoid of empathy AND immune to first, second, or even third-hand embarrassment, the law of large numbers means you're going to find yourself in a scenario that feels like the worst episode of a sitcom you already didn't like. The importance of telling your client something they don't want to hear is nothing new, but as my guest today has seen in her decades of practice, when it comes to the complexity of the legal system it's generally the folks who THOUGHT they understood what was happening who end up taking the biggest emotional hit.Rachel A. King is an attorney in practicing in California, Arizona, Kentucky, and Texas.A veteran of the U.S. military Rachel served in the Army as a paralegal and Communication Specialist before earning her JD from Thomas Jefferson School of Law.As the founder of the King Law Firm, Rachel is Board Certified in the area of Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law, and is committed to the legal success of her clients and believes communication is essential for a successful attorney-client relationship. She not only proves this daily in her practice, but as the host of the Gavels Down, Voices Uppodcast which aims to demystify the legal system, and as the author of the forthcoming book, "Getting Divorced, Now What?", a guide which aims to be a compassionate, relatable roadmap for those who may not be able afford an attorney. We talk about everything from what it's like to grow up in a legal family, why a nontraditional route to law school is often more of an asset than a liability, and why – no matter how much we may want it – as a boss, we eventually have to choose between being a leader and a friend. Enjoy the show.

Podcast Notes for Operation: Thriving Marriage Episode 78: Commitment is More Than Not Getting Divorced Commitment in marriage is often misunderstood. Many couples believe it simply means not getting divorced, but staying married isn't enough to create a thriving relationship. True commitment requires more than avoiding separation—it's about intentionally nurturing your marriage every day. A thriving marriage requires constant care, attention, and prioritization. Without this, couples may find themselves in a relationship that feels like a burden rather than a joy. When commitment is misunderstood, it often leads to dissatisfaction and unfulfilled expectations. Couples who don't prioritize their marriage may look for fulfillment outside the relationship, not necessarily through affairs but by escaping into work, hobbies, nonsexual relationships, or even vices like alcohol. While these escapes might seem harmless, they undermine the emotional and spiritual connection that a marriage needs to flourish. Over time, this shallow understanding of commitment leads to dissatisfaction, stunted spiritual growth, and a marriage that falls short of God's intended design. True commitment in marriage goes beyond maintaining a legal relationship or living under the same roof. It means actively pursuing safety, intimacy, and growth within the relationship. The Bible provides the ultimate example of this type of commitment through God's relentless pursuit of us, even when we fall short. This is the model for marriage: a relentless, loving pursuit of your spouse. Commitment means doing your part regardless of your spouse's actions, prioritizing the relationship above everything else, even things that feel rewarding or important, like work, hobbies, or even church activities. A mediocre marriage isn't God's plan for you. Instead, pursue a relationship that is joyful, fulfilling, and spiritually enriching. Don't settle for “meh,” and never give up on the commitment you've made, even if your spouse struggles. God's example reminds us of the power of perseverance and grace in relationships. Commitment is not just about avoiding divorce—it's about loving, pursuing, and prioritizing your spouse daily. The Bible shows us that true commitment mirrors God's relentless love for us, emphasizing grace, sacrifice, and a deep connection. Let's reject the mindset of simply “staying together” and instead strive for a thriving, joy-filled marriage that reflects God's design. If this episode inspired you, subscribe to Operation: Thriving Marriage and share it with someone who needs encouragement. Together, we can build marriages that honor God and bring joy to our lives.
Getting Divorced… Now What? Your Go-To-Guide On How To Make The Process Of Divorce Less Painful by Attorney Rachel King Thelawyerking.com Rachel King, lead litigation attorney at King Law Firm Attorneys at Law, Inc., has a new book being released soon. We talked to Rachel about the book, Getting Divorced… Now What? and the challenges one might face when representing themselves during divorce. 1. What is Getting Divorced… Now What? It is everything I have learned over a decade of practicing litigation. It is my attempt to share the inside scoop on divorce in a way that is helpful for individuals facing divorce, which includes case studies, general legal information, tips and tricks—all written without legalese. 2. What Inspired you to write the book? I found that the expectations clients have in a divorce vary hugely but are also unrealistic when compared to the law and are often driven by emotion. This can cause a person to get completely off track and make their case worse. I wanted to share a different perspective, one that many people never get (details attorneys feel are unpopular) attorneys feel the or have to pay a lot of money for (hiring their own attorney). 3. How did you choose the real-life stories included in the book? I've watched thousands of people in court—I've seen it all. So, I looked at a lot of common scenarios and tried to pick situations that are most likely to be encountered or that illustrate a specific issue in the best way. My goal is to share stories that show ‘you are not alone' while bringing credibility to the information I am sharing. Of course, the real-life stories included in the book are only based on people and families; the details and the players in each one have been changed. 4. Do the stories offer a comprehensive look at the challenges faced during a divorce? I definitely had to balance comprehensive with taking people down the rabbit hole. (Believe me, I could have written an entire series—and maybe I will!) My goal is to be a helpful resource, not a law school course. Therefore, I focused on what I considered the most common issues, and concepts that are misunderstood, or unpopular realities that no one is talking about in divorce. 5. In your opinion, what is the most influential real-life story in the book? I love the stories that share empowerment. Divorce is hard. Showing that people can have a successful outcome through divorce is important; or maybe even better, can have a successful post-divorce life even if they lose. I really want to show people that the law is different than the dream. Understanding that early can make the process more tolerable. 6. What are some common misconceptions when representing yourself in a divorce? Hands down—that you get special treatment because you don't' have an attorney. Not the case. The court may be more patient, but you will be held to the same standards as the attorney sitting across the table from you. This is most difficult when it comes to presenting a case in trial and getting in evidence. 7. What are the top three mistakes people make when representing themselves in a divorce? Making decisions in their own case based on what happened to their friend. Not taking the time to understand the law. Thinking you get special treatment and that the court will let it slide just because you are representing yourself. 8. Does Getting Divorced… Now What? Help readers understand the financial implications of divorce, both during and after? There is definitely discussion about dividing assets, debts, and child and spousal support. Because, let's face it, divorce causes financial upheaval. But fear not; this is not an economics class, and you don't have to do math. 9. How can Getting Divorced… Now What? mentally prepare someone for divorce (and to represent themselves through the divorce)? It gives a global understanding of divorce, which can be used as a starting point when preparing for divorce,

"As I was going through these years of inactivity and darkness, I was making this list in my phone in my notes app of all these questions and concerns and doubts that I had. It got longer and longer -- it was a long list of things that I was upset about. The first day I went back to church and went to a class, the top question on my list was about patriarchal blessings. I had this question and for hours I had thought about it and tried to come up with an answer and I just didn't. It didn't make sense to me, and it was upsetting to me. In that first class this girl spoke about patriarchal blessings, within 10 minutes she had bore her testimony and explained it in a way that I'd never thought of. It was just this clear, simple answer for me. So I crossed that question off, and it continued that way. Every week I went to church there was another question crossed off. To me, that was just this huge testament that God knew me and He knew my concerns. He was waiting for my effort. It was like, you give me effort, I'll give you answers. I'll give you clarity, and it has continued that way." Think it's too late for early retirement? Do you feel like just because you're in your late thirties, forties, or fifties, FIRE doesn't make sense for you? Well, think again because today's guest defied the odds by retiring over fifteen years early, all while raising her daughter on her own and without a six-figure salary to sail her swiftly to a million-dollar net worth. Plus, she did all of it with no investing experience. If Jackie Cummings Koski can do it, so can you! Jackie grew up in a single-parent household. Her father worked hard to support her and her five siblings. This instilled a strong work ethic in Jackie and made her realize that running towards hard things, not away from them, was the true path to success. She figured out college on her own and, shortly after, landed a corporate job that took her far away from the small town she grew up in. She got married and had her daughter, but then everything changed. Jackie was getting divorced, forcing her to rely on herself fully for her financial future. In true Jackie fashion, she took this as a challenge and began educating herself as best as she could. Through smart saving, spending, and life-changing investing decisions, Jackie built her wealth in record time, reaching financial independence just ten years after finding the FIRE movement—all without any advantages! In This Episode We Cover How to reach financial independence without a high salary, inheritance, or advantages Stock investing 101 and how intentional investing can explode your net worth Why you must max out THESE investment accounts to be richer in retirement How Jackie spends just $40,000 per year owning her own home and raising her daughter Why you DON'T have to follow all the traditional FIRE rules to retire early And So Much More!
