Spoiler Alert! In My Skin is a coming-of-age story about a Welsh girl Bethan as she explores the mirth and misery of an unusual girlhood - her mother has bipolar disorder and her dad is an abusive alcoholic. This show stole my heart with its second season. I talk about its creator Kayleigh Lleweylln, how her talent reminds me of Phoebe Waller-bridge, and how she pulls heart and soul into this show which is based on her upbringing. I was crying my eyes out watching the tragedy unfolding for Bathan, but also was so touched by how she manages to fight back and build her own life. Its leading actor Gabrielle Creevy is going to have her time in the near future - mark my words! And cannot wait for Kayleigh's future works.MusicIn My Skin (Music from the BBC programme) by Nick Forster / Oli JulianReferencesPodcast - Griefcast ep 9Podcast - Cascade Talks with 'In My Skin' writer, Kayleigh LlewellynBFI interview - Kayleigh Llewellyn: How I made it as TV screenwriterMy telegram channel @MinchesterReviewhttps://t.me/MinchesterReview
ソロ活女子のススメ, a low-budget night-time TV show that first aired last year is an unlikely refuge for me during this strange time. The Recommendations by A Solo-acted Woman follows 五月女 san as she explores her city and tries fun activities that are deemed impossible for an individual to enjoy. I love how it focuses on the delight of mindfulness - to pay attention to the details of life, be it the texture of beef at a barbeque restaurant, the movement of an eagle at the zoo, the touch of wind miles high in the sky, the warm services by staffs of hotels, gyms, and saunas, the sheer pleasure of being inspired by the recommendations by strangers on how to discover beauty in life. Enjoying Dan's British-accented German, I was deeply enchanted by this story between a reluctant woman and her robot friend, programmed according to her romantic taste. It is light-hearted with comical details as well as philosophical reflection. Tenderly, it asks questions about what to do when facing the ending of a relationship, and human beings' exploration of their desires and fears in a near future. 02:00 Rotten Cherry (一车烂话) is a podcast in Mandarin produced by the three of us. The privilege of direct experience had led me away from literary and academic work, yet now I felt that to understand my own direct experiences, I would have to translate them back into language. Hemingway described his process in similar terms: acquiring rich experiences, and retreat to cogitate and write about them. I needed words to go forward. Hello, this is Part 2 of 'Meditation on Med'. You are going to hear a quite personal reading of a great book When Breath Becomes Air.When Breath Becomes Air was written by the late neurosurgeon Dr Paul Kalanithi, who discovered he had had a late stage cancer during the last year of his residency. He wrote about why he chose to study medicine, neurosurgeon in particular; the lengthy and demanding training. He wrote about the peculiar nature of neurosurgery, an operation of the brain, which requires the patient to answer: what makes life meaningful enough to go on living. The diagnosis of lung cancer put Dr Kalanithi in a place of a patient and forced him to think about this question, and to take action to pursue what was meaningful to him at the end of his journey. Like most of the readers, it was an eye-opening experience for me to get to know some knowledge of neurosurgery, and it was heartbreaking but at the same time inspiring to read Dr Kalanithi's story. But it is Dr Kalanithi's take on writing, or literature, that touches me the most. I love when he talked about he wanted to get to the junction where medicine, morality, and literature intersect, which is profound for me, who recently changed career path. I love when he quoted Hemingway to highlight the need of 'translating experience to words'. It is literature, or writing, or things that are not science-bound, that makes this book happen. It has encouraged me to think about what role literature can play in my life - a companion that guides and consoles me, a tool that helps me to cogitate and to understand. So, be aware this is not your usual book review; rather, it's a meditation of jobs, calling or not, and the meaning of life, whatever elusive form it takes. Hello! You are listening to a mini series 'Meditation on Med' where I talk about medical-related TV, film or book. In this part, I talk about a hit British TV show This Is Going to Hurt and an acclaimed TV-film Help. Both works look at how Britain's health system functions under increasing stress. In This is Going to Hurt (03:26), we follow junior doctor Adam Kay's hectic life at labour wards during the year 2006. This is an ace TV production, tragicomedy at its best. I was utterly impressed by the ensemble: every small role shines and, for the leading actor, Ben Wishaw, needless to say, nailed the meanness and kindness of Adam beautifully. The show also allows us to look behind the system, to have a peek into how the medical legal system works, the drastic difference between a private hospital and an NHS one, among others.Major spoiler alert from 10:55 - 13:06Really, you should have a look at this show: it is so good!Help (14:02), starring the amazing Jodie Comer, is a much chilling TV-film. It follows Jodie's character Sarah, a new care-taker at a Liverpool Care Home, during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. The unapologetically raw depiction of care home workers and residents living with scarce PPE during the pandemic is difficult to watch. But Jodie's performance is moving and powerful. The film also brings back memories of mine during early 2020. Truly an important film of this era. In the next episode of this series, I'll dive into Dr Paul Kalanithi's memoir When Breath Becomes Air, another great piece of work on medicine, mortality, and the meaning of life. Hiya! In this episode, I talk through a Japanese movie ‘彼らが本気で編むときは、' (‘When They Knit in Earnest' or ‘Close-Knit'). Young girl Tomo comes to live with her uncle for the period of time when her mother leaves her alone to chase a hopeless love affair. Tomo embarks on a journey of coming to understand and make friends with her uncle's girlfriend Rinko, a trans woman. This is a heart-warming story about a girl learning to accept and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community, but also one that investigates the social prejudice towards trans woman and gay man. However, my point of interest lies beyond its obvious topic. I was captured by how this movie approaches care, create and motherhood. The movie showcases a myriad of ‘failed' mothers: some have an estranged relationship with their kids, some failed to give their kids the gender they belong to, some simply don't understand or support their kids. One of them is Tomo's mother Mimura, the run-away single parent. Mimura's story propels me to think about 'the absent experience of motherhood' in physical and biological contexts and how that (dis)enables the idea of a good mother. Hi!In this episode, I talk about a manga-adapted low-budget Japanese TV show 'Lifebelt' (Ukiwa), which is directed by Kazama Hiroki (风间太树)and stars Kadowaki Mugi(门脇麦).I knew Kazama san from Cherry Magic, and became fond of how he uses cinematography to tell the delicate exchanges of emotions between individuals, often in a workplace setting, and how he utilizes elements of fantasy to investigate longing between unlikely lovers. First I compare his works with that of Lucy Forbes and Benedict Spence, whose works include The End of The F***ing World. I point out Kazama and Lucy&Benedict are able to transform a seemingly cheesy story plot into something profoundly moving. Their takes on humor and awkwardness are spot-on. Their cinematography enhances the style of the production. Lifebelt follows Maiko, a newly-wed house wife, who discovers her husband Nakayama is cheating on her shortly after the couple moves to Nakayama's company's HD in Tokyo. In sadness, Maiko forms a bond with her neighbor/colleague to her husband Mr Futaba, whose wife is also cheating on him. The two neighbors, through their tiny everyday interactions, find themselves in a zone where they are closer than friends, but not quite lovers. Lifebelt asks: what keeps/drives people together? The show is charming, stylish, fun and enlightening with beautiful scenes and solid performances.

Wie geht's? ;)In this episode, Lassie and I talk about 'Princess Charming', a German reality TV show that features a lady lead who is looking for the - wait for it- Princess in her life. This is the first lesbian dating show we've watched and we are obsessed with it!! We talk about what we love about the show, the girls, and what this show could improve in its second season (yeah). We point out that both Irina and the girl she finally picks may be a conscious choice, as the show endeavors to showcase a positive image of the lesbian community. Having said that, we don't doubt there is genuine emotion/affection between Irina and the girls, we are just questioning if 'representation' is a valid mission for a dating show, as courting can be lengthy, messy, and ambiguous. What if the lover is imperfect, what if the audience doesn't love the winner – will that make a difference? When we speak about raising visibility, is it a curated visibility we are referring to?When playing back the recording, I did notice that we've been conservative, especially when it comes to the talk about a possible bisexual lady lead. I've been thinking about our disagreement with a drama-filled courtship between the participants (rather than one between the lead lady and the participants), and I noticed that that may be one of the queerest parts of a queer romance: in the end, it is not a black-and-white situation as you are likely to fall in love with those who you are supposed to 'compete with'. I thought about if our perception of an 'orderly courtship' is a product of straight-centrism and whether what is thought to be natural is, in effect, one of the many cultural constructs?I suppose that's one of the things I am trying to do through podcasting: every episode is an attempt of spelling 'nuance' – to speak out what I love and what I dislike, to spell out what is great and what doesn't sound about right. It is only by trying to 'spell nuance' that I am able to see the nuances and difficulty of the process and, by doing that, to review what I have been taken for granted and what I have been overlooked.Every (sometimes failed) attempt is, nonetheless, a good attempt. Oh. If there's one thing I learnt from Princess Charming, that is: being single is NOT being vulnerable. After all, it's a show of 21 single girls, and it's wonderful. 02:40 The Real L Word, a lesbian reality TV show (focus more on life; documentary-like)03:36 Princess Charming cast: every girl shines! 05:55 Princess Charming introduction08:25 Originally, PC plans to have a bisexual woman as its lead 12:25 Love Island goals: love and money16:13 Discussions about the show: mission of this program; intention of the participants; why Irina is天菜 30:10 The representation effort: good or problematic?33:42 Common attributes of Irina and [spoiler alert] and the all the participants that we like and dislike45:14 The one who impresses us the most (this part is golden! In this episode, I talk about a memoir Hanna's Chongqing written by a Chinese-German lady called Johanna Stahl. I visited 'Mountain City' Chongqing this April and couldn't stop thinking about it. This precious memoir about wartime Chongqing in the eyes of a young girl allows me to revisit its eventful and tumultous past through a very special lens lent by a daughter of a German diplomat.I talk a bit about the story behind its publication and I can't speak highly enough of its beautiful translation (06:23). For me, Hanna's Chongqing is both a coming-of-age story and a war reportage. Hanna's story helps me to understand the records on war in a much tangible and accessible way. Some six years ago, I was shocked to learn there was such a big war happening in Europe that I knew nothing about. Films like Quo Vadis Aida (06:07) and comic reportage Safe Area Gorazde (25:05) allow me to learn a little bit more about the odd turn of history and the sufferings of the civilians. Each of the four works I have covered here tells a story of a different place in Bosnia. Quo Vadis, Aida? looks at the Srebrenica Massacre. I argue that the film is smart in keeping 'a false glimmer' for the audience when its highly capable and brave heroine attempts to save her family from being killed by their neighbours-turned-tormentors. I point out the chilling line that happen in the execution room may be a comment on the status quo of European cinema, which had been remained silent on its dark recent past. Then I review the first two books I have read about BiH. Zlata's Diary (20:57) follows Zlata's everyday life in the war-time Sarajevo, while The Bosnia List (22:18) records Kenan's puzzling childhood in Brcko. Safe Area Gorazde is an excellent comic book that does not shy away from the traumatic experience of the town people of the then-enclave Gorazde. Have you missed me? ;)In this episode, I talk about a Japanese fiction called Spring, at Barneys (2004) by Yoshida Shuichi, one of my favorite writers. Spring, at Barneys is a sequel to Yoshida's early novella The Last Son (1999). The early work tells the story of Tsutsui, of how he navigates his life as a young gay man, lives in a world that is malignant and violent to his community, and sways between a life as the boyfriend to someone he does not love and parents' demand of him to form a family. Spring, at Barneys sees Tsutsui in his 30s as he bumps into his former lover in the department store and ponders on his current life as a married man with a kid. I was mesmerized by Yoshida's nuanced writing, which looks into the seemingly mundane moments of life, and the eventual emotional outbreak of a man who seems to be living a life he is contented of. The writing is effortless and piecing. I tried to translate a few passages that I am very fond of. (23:39)I talk a bit about the adapted film, which stars Nishijima Hitedoshi (*swoon*).I also talk about how the idea of 'the past' intertwines with Tsuitsui's escapism. By analyzing a small episode where his father rejects his dream of studying in the US, I argue that the idea of studying/living abroad, as it invites a new form of language, allows physical detachment, and forms a space of literal 'different time zone', embodies the ultimate illusion of freedom and possibilities. 02:30 Introduction of The Last Son08:00 Introduction of Spring, at Barneys29:04 TV-Film of Spring, at Barneys36:54 Some expanded readings including how 'the past is a foreign country' plays out in Yoshida's novel. She is a show runner for Killing Eve S2 and plays the part of the Duchess of Cornwell in the Crown. You might spot a girl like Cassie in a Friday night club. How do we prove our point that (s)he is excellent/brave/inspirational? Where do we draw the line between their professional achievements and what happen to their personal life? How do we decipher the agenda of media coverage while relying on them as our limited sources? How do we find truth; how do we share passion; how do we talk about love?I guess that's the point of writing and talking about things on podcast; it is this process that requires me not just to collect 'evidences', to prove a point, but also to examine this process itself.I hope you like this episode; do check Louis's music!! xx

Chanel authored Know My Name, a brilliant and beautiful memoir about her traumatic experience and how she was helped and self-helped to navigate the long and difficult trial process. Another is Freya Lewis, who survived the Manchester attack, which took her friend Nell's life and caused her 29 injuries. However, she managed to bounce back and ran 2.5 km one year after the attack while raising 60,000 GBP for the hospital. In Know My Name (01:10), what I found most touching and inspiring is how Chanel argues against the myth of 'perfect victim'. She is not perfect - and that makes her real, genuine, vulnerable, honest and brave. In What Makes Us Stronger (12:05), apart from the details of the attack, I also learnt about the stories behind the photos taken by 1D fan Freya and Harry who also comes from Holmes Chapel, and Louis who presented her with the NHS Hero Award. Hiiiii Welcome back to The Minchester Review. In this episode, Lassie joined me in discussing her recent trip to Haworth, a town in northern England where the Bronte sisters lived. Haworth has a special place in my heart: I've been a passionate Bronte fan since I was young and I was fortunate to have visited the parsonage museum twice. I enjoyed every minute there and I was glad so did Lassie (maybe minus the waiting time at the bus stop)!Lassie's Haworth experience was a special one because Bronte Museum was freshly reopened and put on some special policies to ensure the safety of staffs and visitors. Also when the bus didn't come in due time, the local people were very kind to help her. We also discussed how the real deal writer's museum/house asks for such a friendly entrance fee while some place with no real deal (cough cough Jane Austen Centre in Bath) charges a lot and how the experience at a National Trust estate differs from that in the Bronte museum.04:15 Lassie's first taste of Yorkshire was to Shibden Hall, Halifax09:00 Unlike the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, the Bronte Parsonage Museum presents real life objects that allows visitors to build an indirect connect with the writers13:33 Catherine's first time to Haworth was a 'very very sunny day', the second time 'not Brontely' neither15:35 With the uncertain prospect of author's house, Lassie finally decided to make the trip to Haworth17:00 You can support Bronte Museum via its Just Giving website18:45 Lassie wants to find out more about Yorkshire because her friend Joe worked there for 6 months as a crew member of ACGAS21:10 Lassie departed from Manchester Victoria Station to Hebden Bridge22:07 Catherine's two travelling experience: one time from Bradford, another from Keighley24:40 National Media Museum, Bradford - a hidden gem in the north25:50 The north provides lots of opportunities for British TV industry talents27:35 The schedule of Covid19 test required Lassie to put the trip on a Sunday when the bus to the museum didn't show up...31:22 The local people in Haworth stepped out to help36:45 Visitors need to book their time slot now39:10 Entrance ticket price is very friendly!43:28 A normal house on the outside, a lot of wonderful things in the inside46:05 Catherine was surprised to find Lassie only spent 1 hour in the main building of Chatsworth House49:20 The museum's policy to control the number of visitors53:08 Anne Bronte's embroidery introduces Lassie to this youngest sister of the Bronte family56:20 Patrick Bronte used to send his daughters' pieces of belongings to fans as souvenirs58:53 Experience in National Trust places can be quite different59:20 Why there is no tea room in the museum?01:01:00 There seemed always to be a study room for the males of the house, but the female writers (Brontes and Elizabeth Gaskell) did not own a study01:12:10 A real wedding at the Haworth church!Music: Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Hi! Welcome to this episode where I talk about my favorite American TV show - Homeland. This is the first episode with a written script - hopefully it sounds more polished and finally I can get hold of the time. Homeland follows its iconic female lead Carrie Mathison's CIA (or independant) career. Starting as a US version of Isreal's hit show 'Prisoner of War', Homeland reinvents itself after season three, which sees it expanding the stories and settings. It is an excellent show in that it reflects and comments on the current affairs. The characters are captivating and the performances are ace.I talk through the story, compare the first seasons and the later ones, share my story as a long-time Claire Danes fan, my West End experience to see the Damian Lewis play, and my Homeland-themed Berlin visit. In the end, I also introduce some of the advices given by Lesli Linka Glatter, the amazing executive producer and director of Homeland (and Mad Men & Twin Peaks among others!). I found the advices helpful and inspiring.Hope Homeland can have won a few nods from Emmys this season, but no matter what, it is one of the best shows, and will always be that special show for me.
Hello! It's been a while. This episode is dedicated to a lovely indie movie Departure featuring young British actor Alex lawther. Departure is a coming-of-age story set in southern France. I find the movie refreshing in that it presents a complex palette of characters. I also look into its abundant narcissism-related metaphor/motifs and try to understand/defy the connection between myth, metaphor and queer culture. I continue to talk about Alex's film/TV/theatre works, among which Imitation Game and The End of The F***ing World are my favorite. As Alex says, be like Sally Hawkins and stay hydrated!References:Greg Goldberg, 'Though the Looking Glass: The Queer Narcissism of Selfies'Elizabeth Lunbeck, 'The Narcissist Homosexual: Genealogy of a Myth'
Welcome to the fourth episode of The Minchester Review! This is a very special episode 'cause guest Lassie joins me ;) We talk about a Netflix TV show we adore - it's called Feel Good. The 6-episode show tells the story of stand-up comedian/Canadian girl Mae Martin (played by Mae Martin), following her journey of falling in love with another girl George (Charlotte Ritchie) and her life of trying to stay clean and pursuing a career in the UK. Welcome! In this second episode of The Minchester Review, I talk about the novel House on the Hillside (坡道上的家) written by Japanese writer Mitsuyo Kakuta. Intrigued by the author's comment that the novel is more about where the communication fails than the difficulty of motherhood depicted by the TV show, I delve into the nuanced parts of the book where the author studies people's fear of being otherised and how the self can be hypnotized by enigmatic conversation. House on the Hillside is written in a clear and straightforward style; the details and analysis of interpersonal relationship between family members are fascinating.
Welcome to The Minchester Review. In this episode, I talk about the hit Netflix show YOU (season 1). YOU asks 'What would you do for love'. It tells a story of boy meets girl but boy is a stalker. It revisits the idea of love and reveals to what extent it is a production of Hollywood romcoms. It is chilling, funny, dark, cheesy, and addictive.
