Surprise, friends. Grant Morrison joins the show for Superman Day! As the writer behind the seminal All-Star Superman, which observes its 20th anniversary this November, we cannot think of a better person to help us celebrate the Last Son of Krypton on his 87th birthday. Action Comics #1, featuring the first appearance of Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, hit newsstands on April 18th, 1938. It is the source of everything you love about superhero comics. When Action Comics first arrived, America was in economic ruin. The world was about to enter its second great war. Despair was easily accessible, but two Jewish kids from Cleveland imagined a Man of Steel who could do the impossible and would act for those who could not act for themselves. As we look outside our windows in 2025, we see an incredible darkness, but we strive for a future beyond it. We can imitate the devils in the dark, or we can seek Superman, who reflects the best version of ourselves. Like most people, probably, we first encountered Superman through television and film; it was the All-Star Superman comics by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant, Phil Balsman, and Travis Lanham that solidified our passion for the character. Those twelve issues showcased the joyous, awful, absurd, and adventurous universe Superman populated, making us fall in love with it and our own realm in return. As Morrison writes in Supergods, we are the stories we tell ourselves. In Superman, we see who we've been, who we are, and who we could be. We're positively chuffed to chat Superman with Grant Morrison. We discuss their approach to the character in All-Star Superman and how it differs from the version they wrote in JLA, Action Comics, Final Crisis, and other stories. We discuss the significance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and what it means for Grant and others to extend their great idea. We talk about Lois and Clark, Lex Luthor, Samson, and Atlas, and Grant Morrison reveals their next big comic project somewhere along the line. Continue our conversation with Grant Morrison by visiting their Website, Substack, Instagram, and Bluesky. This Week's Sponsor: We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. Plastic Man No More! #1 – 8.5/10 Lins, Edgar, and Maiolo make a really good team for this particular story, and Cantwell crafted a Plastic Man story that I am already hooked on, one issue in. The Boy Wonder #5 – 8.25/10 – What a great ending for the 5 issue series. The art isn't my usual preference and it took half an issue to get used to. From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)
Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. This time out Mike and Jeff look at the Superman related books that came out with a November 1996 cover date that weren't part of the Final Night event. Those books include Superman: The Man of Steel Annual #5, Superboy and the Ravers #3, Showcase '96 #10, Steel #32, and Justice League: A Midsummers Nightmare #3. After that they look at the first seven (or five, depending on how you want to look at it) episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, which premiered in September of 1996. Episodes discussed are The Last Son of Krypton Parts 1 thru 3, Fun and Games, A Little Piece of Home, Feeding Time, and The Way of All Flesh. For grins, they end their animated talk by chatting about the first issue of the tie-in comics Superman Adventures. Finally, they discuss Lord of the Flys and Battleground Earth, which are the first two episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season 4. Mike would like to take this opportunity to apologize to those listeners that like or love the two episodes of Lois and Clark discussed in this episode. He did not like them and he was not shy about expressing this opinion. Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso Episode art proved by Richie Garofalo Episode edited by Adrienne Garofalo "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!--No! It'sanother Superman origin!" Just before the onset of the ill-conceived New 52 Reboot, DC Comics tapped Geoff Johns and Gary Frank to delivera post-Infinite Crisis retelling of The Man of Steel's beginnings.Paying homage to past iterations of the character from across all media, yet delivering fresh and innovative choices to the lore, this pair of creatives crafted a compelling, fun read that reminded fans--new and old--why they adore the skies that Superman soars through. Join your hosts Keith and Joe for another Comics Comics of rediscovery, and reminiscenes. From the doomed planet Krypton, to the wavering wheat fields of Smallville, to the sky scratching spires of Metropolis the guys examine in detail this mini-epic of the world's greatest hero's beginnings. Comparisons to John Byrne and Mark Waid origin epics are discussed. How much did the TV show Smallville inform the choices made by Johns and Frank? Was this a soul-searching emotional story of self-discovery, or a towering tale of inspiration? And what the heck was in those Lex Corp donuts that Rudy Jones scarffed down? All comic book aficanadoes have their favorite characters, and all Superman devotees have a Last Son of Krypton origin they treasure."Superman: Secret Origin" is one of those classic gems. Back to the days when radio brought to life hours of dramatic entertainment to millions of avid American listeners, one phrase was often heard that thrilled both young and old alike--"UP! UP! AND AWAY!"

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Fleischer Studios' Superman animated shorts of the 1940's! Well, more accurately, we'll be talking about two of the classic Superman cartoons produced under the watchful eye of Max and Dave Fleischer, and one of the late-run entries produced by Famous Studios, Paramount's Fleischer successor studio. Join us for a look back at a trio of The Last Son of Krypton's adventures—The Mad Scientist, The Magnetic Telescope, and Jungle Drums.
In The Last Son of Krypton, Superman is born on an alien world to a technologically advanced species that resembles humans. Shortly after he is born, his planet is destroyed in a natural cataclysm, but Superman's scientist father foresaw the calamity and saves his baby son by sending him to Earth in a small spaceship. The ship is too small to carry anyone else, so Superman's parents stay behind and die. The earliest newspaper strips name the planet "Krypton", the baby "Kal-L", and his biological parents "Jor-L" and "Lora"; their names were changed to "Jor-el", and "Lara" in a 1942 spinoff novel by George Lowther. The ship lands in the American countryside, where the baby is discovered by the Kents, a farming couple. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message
Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso: Spoken in disgust by Superman to Lex Luthor from the classic film Superman: The Movie."You diseased maniac." Yes, it's a great line. But as Keith points out in this new Mint episode, it's also a reverential line delivered by Supes to Lex in Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu's, "Superman: Birthright". The 2003 iteration of The Man of Steel's origin that pays homage to the past while propelling The Last Son of Krypton into the future. Join your hosts Keith Tarnowski and Joe as they do a deep dive into the 12-issue maxi-series that would spark interest and controversy when it hit the local comic shops twenty years ago. Was this most recent retelling, of arguably the world's most famous fictional character fresh, or was it an Earl Scheib $99.95 auto paint job? (Got a feeling only Richie Garofalo and I know that reference?) As the boys examine this work, pop-culture references both pertinent and paradoxical abound. Strap in folks for a lively hour of Superman lore--and if I may coin a new term--"explosive headcanon". This one has it all!

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman, Slackers!Superman is undoubtedly an iconic figure. Often dubbed the first superhero, he is a character that is often considered hokey, even outdated. In response to this, many comics and tv/film writers have attempted to redefine The Man of Steel for a modern audience, with mixed results. With the demise of the DC Extended Universe - aka THE SNYDERVERSE - a new team is at the helm. And the question I have is, "Can James Gunn save Superman”?Although I am somewhat exaggerating the need for the Last Son of Krypton to be saved, as a commercial property the next Superman films will need to strike a balance between a culture that has grown increasingly cynical, if not downright pessimistic, with a character that is known for being unapologetically, inherently good. Enter James Gunn. Anyone who has seen Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and the Peacemaker series knows, this is a guy who understands how to achieve honest to goodness emotional connection to comic book characters. A skillful blend of comedy, action, and violence, with heaping does of love, kindness, and redemption. Also, I just babble about my love for Superman and how the early to mid 80's was an amazing time for comics fans.

Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso In 1986 almost fifty years of Superman lore and continuity were about to be consigned to posterity, and a new legacy was to be initiated by the top creator in the comic book medium of the time--JOHN BYRNE! Gone were the silliness of the sixties and the confusing constancy of the seventies. Byrne's arrival as the new raconteur of "The Last Son of Krypton" ushered in more than just a tonal change in storytelling; instead what commenced in August 1986 was a sea change to the mythology that still resonates with creators and fans alike till this day. Not only were decades of supporting characters, props, and tropes jettisoned, but a new paradigm for The Man of Steel's duality was established. At the end of this introductory six-issue mini-series, Superman was truly--"The Last Son of Krypton'! Join your hosts Keith and Joe as they explore this "radical" reintroduction to the hero who gave birth to an industry. Was John Byrne, writer/artist, composing a canvas of bold, fresh tones for the Superman mythos? Or was he painting with a faux brush that would fade in comparison to what had come before? You be the judge as this special Comics Corner tackles one of the first, and arguably biggest, reboots in comic book history. Back in the Silver Age of the sixties, DC Comics ran house ads proclaiming that "DC" stood for daringly "Different Comics". That slogan finally paid off with John Byrne's MAN OF STEEL.

Today is a first for GateCrashers! We are sitting down with the lead designer and editor of a tabletop roleplaying game. We are discussing the newest campaign for the Fallout TTRPG from Modiphius Entertainment. Dan is joined by Donathin Frye, Lead Designer on Winter of Atom, and Jacky Leung, Designer/Developer and Editor on Winter of Atom. This latest campaign book for Fallout: The Role Playing Game is looking to offer an experience more intense and in-depth than anything seen previously, and at the forefront of that experience are the titular Children of Atom. Main quests will keep your attention as you square off against the Last Son of Atom, a megalomaniac seeking to convert everyone to the Children of Atom, while side quests will offer up chances to explore the world and hunt down better supplies. And true to the source material, terrifying monstrosities will be waiting around every corner. Donathin and Jacky help break down what goes into creating a book like this. They talk about things like the collaborative nature of building a campaign with a group of designers and how much work goes into each mechanic. We discuss the new winter mechanics that come to the Fallout universe. The group also dives a bit into the story elements of the campaign and what it holds for seasoned Fallout TTRPG players and newcomers alike. We discuss the specific flavor of Fallout and what the process is like to get things approved by Bethesda to fit into the canon of the series. Dan also gets to ask about what went into adding some of the new settlements mentioned in the game book and how settlements play into the campaign as a whole. The pair also explain the best place to start with the TTRPG to get your feet wet with the specific 2d6 roleplaying system that the series uses to make the game more cinematic.

In this episode, we head over to Krypton to start talking about Superman The Animated Series with Last Son Of Krypton Part 1.
Tread Perilously's crossover month concludes where superheroes and sitcoms collide -- an episode of I Love Lucy called "Lucy and Superman." Little Ricky and his best friend, Stevie, will soon celebrate their birthdays, but Lucy and Stevie's mother enter an arms race to see who can throw the better party. Stevie's mother hires a clown and magician. Strapped for ideas, Lucy gets Ricky to reach out to Superman, a TV star they met while visiting Los Angeles. But when the Man of Steel initially turns down the offer to appear, Lucy takes it upon herself to become the Last Son of Krypton. Will her hare-brained scheme work or will the Man of Tomorrow come to her rescue? Erik and Justin accept I Love Lucy's premise that Superman is a real celebrity who is both super-powered and a TV star. They also "'splain" the premise of the original three-camera sitcom. Both Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz are praised for their pioneering efforts. Their children, less so. Erik reveals the meaning of I Love Lucy to him, which differs greatly for Justin. Nikita Khrushchev's plan to create a Soviet Superman is revealed. Justin once again stumps for Hollywoodland. Erik tries to remember all the men who played Superman and Chris Knight continues to evolve into the devil.

"A world without heroes is like world without sun. You can't look up to anyone..." The words of KISS were never more true than at the beginning of a cold December in 1992 and ending in January of 1993. The doors outside of comic shops were lined with mourners on that comic book Wednesday. The Man of Tomorrow, The Last Son of Krypton, The Metropolis Kid, The Man of Steel - Superman was dead. Fans wept as they reached for the black polybagged issue, eager to see how our greatest hero could possibly leave us. Major news outlets across the world reported on how Earth's Mightiest Champion was finally and tragically meeting his demise. It was news that rocked the comic world, the fans of Big Blue and the entire planet. Now 30 years later we look back on story that was arguably one of the greatest Superman stories ever told. Also we look at how our hosts , Double A and CM, faced up against possibly their first major collectible event as comic book collectors and fans. claymartindefense.com Twitter - @wayofftheres Joining us today is Clay Martin, a friend of mine with an extensive military background. That's right, it's gonna be another Military chat, and I'm very excited for it! He now runs a self defense consulting business, and his goal right now is to prepare people for any unexpected situation you might experience in the future. Clay Martin is the author of a few books, Concrete Jungle and Prairie Fire. In his own words: I consider myself primarily a father these days, but I have had a number of strange jobs over the years. I am a retired Green Beret, more specifically an 18F Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant, from 3rd Special Forces Group. Prior to that I was a Reconnaissance Marine and Scout Sniper in the USMC. In my years since retiring from that life, I have been a competitive shooter, contractor, firearms instructor, and general purpose hired gun. When my first son was expected, I realized I need a change of careers. So I did what came naturally, and started writing for a digital magazine. As my exposure to other professional writers grew, many of whom had written books, I realized I had stories that needed telling. I wrote Last Son of the War God, my first novel, in 2017. With the birth of my second son, my wife and I decided it was time to move out of the city. With two growing boys and a pack of wild dogs we call pets, we needed a change of pace. So we moved to a small town, downsizing our house but upsizing our land to a 5 acre plot. In my spare time, I pretend to homestead it. My hobbies include changing dirty diapers, and trying to outrun a toddler while being 40. Other than that, I try to keep up on fitness, though with much humbler goals now that I don't commando for a living. We plan on adding chickens and some smaller livestock soon, which should be an adventure in its own right. I've travelled all over the world, though usually to places you wouldn't want to go on vacation. Between my first career and an unexpected transition back to the real world, it has been interesting sometimes to the point of insanity. In the same year I once helped broker a deal for explosives importation from a former Soviet Bloc nation, lived in a fake Afghan village outside of Fort Bragg because I was to poor to get an apartment, and then immediately lived 6 months in a mansion in Aspen as head of a billionaires private security. Presently I am enjoying a slower pace of life, in the Pacific Northwest, the most beautiful place on Earth. My wife is teaching me to fly fish, and I am teaching her how to raise savages. 1:30 - Introductions 4:30 - Why are Green Berets special / unique 8:53 - Is there a movie that captures Green Beret's accurately 12:50 - What is sniper training like? 20:00 - How can we help Ukraine 45:30 - How does military spending work 50:00 - Why should citizens be more prepared than they are now 1:08:30 - How do you convince neighbors to prepare? 1:11:20 - Ammo chat 1:18:30 - Preparing your home 1:26:30 - Crazy guy in Scotts neighborhood 1:32:30 - More base levels of preparedness 1:38:50 - What products do you offer 1:41:30 - How much do basic deterrents help
