This episode, on the recommendation of an SLL listener, we're excited to do a deep dive into the Japanese Drama, Rinko-San Wants to Try. We get into how the show complicates conceptions of virginity, plays with the friends with benefits trope, and maybe get in our feelings a lil bit about a second female lead who really got under Ayanni's skin. As two people who study, analyze, and have a literal podcast about media, we stand in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike–along with their counterparts in other industries/countries, who also deserve fair wages and labor protections–none of the works we discuss here or in other episodes would exist. Next time we meet, I'll have lived a good full podcast. Welcome back to the finale of Spooktember in July! Today, we're going to be talking about Ghostwire: Tokyo, a first person shooter game from Tango Gameworks, the developer of The Evil Within. Ghostwire is a sort of a horror game, but with an emphasis on magical first-person combat and Japanese culture, which makes it sort of an odd experience because of where its priorities seem to be. The open world parts of the game are in a lot of ways bog standard, with myriad collectibles, “Ubisoft towers” to clear to open new sections of the map, sidequests and other digressions, but on the other hand, there are also pages upon pages of item and character descriptions, full of folklore and details about everyday life in Japan. It makes the actual world of the game feel very realized, and downright educational at times. The combat contains a lot of systems, but not a lot of incentive to engage with that depth, as encounters tend to be fairly easy to overcome either with your basic “elemental weaving” attacks or with stealth, limiting the amount the player will actually experiment with the advanced techniques or other weapon items like the bow and talismans. To some extent, this is a shame, because the game's setting and visuals are at times captivating, but taken as a whole this still isn't a bad game and there's a lot of fun to be had if you're willing to look past the more banal parts of its design. We're going to be talking about our perception of how this game was received and its potentially overlooked content update that adds a lot of good things to the game, how the open world both succeeds and fails by following trends in design that are over a decade old, and we address the very real danger of flip-kicking school children. Thank you for joining us again this week! We had fun cobbling this stupid theme together, and this was the game I'm most happy to have had a reason to play. Not because it's the best of the games we talked about, but because it's a title we likely wouldn't have played otherwise, and one that is pretty fascinating at times. It isn't groundbreaking, but it focuses on things most games don't, and it's always fun to see something in the triple A space trying to do weird things. What did you think of Ghostwire? Did you play at release and if so were you aware of the update that came out? Was I justified in comparing this to No Man's Sky? Let us know in the comments or over on Discord! Next time, we're going to be tackling a game on the complete opposite end of the genre spectrum and talking about Rimworld, so we hope you'll join us for that!

Sandy Rinko-an Chubb is the guiding teacher at the Oxford Zen Centre, UK, in the Sanbo Zen lineage. She began Zen practice with Master Yamata Hogen in 1987, then continued her study with Sister Elaine MacInnes (founder of the Oxford Zen Centre) and John Eiun-ken Gaynor, and was appointed Zen Teacher in 2013. For ten years, Sandy was director of the Prison Phoenix Trust, an organisation that offers meditation and yoga to prisoners and prison officers in the UK and Ireland. In our interview, she shares her delightful warmth and illuminating wisdom on dealing with troublesome buddhas, gleaned from years of working with prisoners and zen students of every shape and size. She emphasises the Buddha's first noble truth that everyone suffers, and that, in the end, “if you let it bother you, you'll go mad!” She makes the parallel between prison inmates and those who may be on the outside but put themselves in prisons of our own making by desperately wanting things to be different (i.e. the Buddha's 2nd noble truth that we suffer because we cling). She describes the wisdom of just sitting, facing yourself, coming to know yourself (even like yourself!), and tasting the sweet and bitter equally. This acceptance, she says, is the key to finding the stillness and peace beneath the noisy, busy, uncomfortable, difficult environments and interactions we face every day. Not only that, but it shows us how to find the utter perfection of every moment, just as it is. Towards the end of the interview she cites part of the great Zen master Torei's Bodhisattva Vow, which I commented was an excellent summary of the essence of a troublesome buddha:“Who can be ungrateful or not respectful to each and every thing, as well as to human beings!Even though someone may be a fool,be warm and compassionate. If by any chance such a person should turn against us,become a sworn enemy and abuse and persecute us,we should sincerely bow down with humble language, in reverent belief that he or she is the merciful avatar of Buddha, who uses devices to emancipate us from sinful karmathat has been produced and accumulated upon ourselvesby our own egoistic delusion and attachmentthrough countless cycles of kalpas.”Support the showThis podcast is sponsored by Zen Minded – an online lifestyle store offering you the very best of Japanese craft, incense & other Zen-inspired home-goods. Hiya! In this episode, I talk through a Japanese movie ‘彼らが本気で編むときは、' (‘When They Knit in Earnest' or ‘Close-Knit'). Young girl Tomo comes to live with her uncle for the period of time when her mother leaves her alone to chase a hopeless love affair. Tomo embarks on a journey of coming to understand and make friends with her uncle's girlfriend Rinko, a trans woman. This is a heart-warming story about a girl learning to accept and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community, but also one that investigates the social prejudice towards trans woman and gay man. However, my point of interest lies beyond its obvious topic. I was captured by how this movie approaches care, create and motherhood. The movie showcases a myriad of ‘failed' mothers: some have an estranged relationship with their kids, some failed to give their kids the gender they belong to, some simply don't understand or support their kids. One of them is Tomo's mother Mimura, the run-away single parent. Mimura's story propels me to think about 'the absent experience of motherhood' in physical and biological contexts and how that (dis)enables the idea of a good mother. Highly recommend this movie xMusic物語のはじまりby 江藤直子 海by 江藤直子

It's the Return of the Woap as all the boys are back this week for another Joran double-header slug-fest. “Air Jamal” makes his debut and both Adam and Wopeh give a rundown of their experiences at the Beer Olympics (no shoulders were safe). On the anime side of things, Sawa meets Rinko, a brand new Nue executioner, and soon discovers she is both an absolute tank for alcohol but also a world-class assassin. This may be due to the insane wolverine-Esque claws she uses. Sawa finds out who really killed her family as we get a flashback where a whole lot of peeps lose their faces. The dynamic between Sawa and Jin is discussed as the Otaku crew asks ‘Why is Sawa still alive?', ‘What's her motive?', ‘Would Rinko out drink all of them?', and ‘Is Jin bird-man?'. Let's all lick wine off the floor together on another episode of the Otaku Street Podcast!

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Only Lady knows the danger of two cats. Yes, it's time for double the trouble as Danny tackles two volumes in a single review. Spicing things up by elongating the arc, Danny goes of the covers, compares them, and then jumps into the plot. Using two separate streams of positives and negatives, he cross references the volumes against the other in order to see how far the mangaka has progressed as Danny enters the middles stretch. Is Yuuto better? What can Rinko add? How does Kuesu fare? What do the new villains teach us? And how much fan service can you fit into a manga? All these questions are explored as Danny reviews two for the price of one. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Yen-Press at: https://yenpress.com/9780316229890/omamori-himari-vol-7/ Original cover art for Sound Cloud owned by Milan Mantra, Yen-Press, Hope Donovan, Hachette Book Group, Fujimishobo Co. This week's manga log: Tokyo Tarareba Girls, by Akiko Higashimura Description (courtesy of Kodansha): "I spent all my time wondering 'What if?' Then one day I woke up and I was 33." Rinko doesn't think she's that bad-looking, but before she knew it, she was thirtysomething and single. Now she wants to get married by the time the Tokyo Olympics rolls around in six years, but … that might be easier said than done! The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, re-enter the drift - and lose a few brain cells in the process - with this week's review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018). Set ten years after the Guillermo del Toro-directed first film, this installment stars John Boyega as the son of the late Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba) and features only a few returning performers (Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Rinko Kikuchi). The bulk of the film is devoted to a new group of Jaeger pilot recruits and a small fortune spent on digital effects. With the breach beneath the Pacific Ocean sealed after the first film, one might ask what causes the massive kaiju monsters to return and battle Earth's building-sized Jaegers once more? The answers might surprise you (or not).

Podcast manga reveiw of Omamori Himari Volume 1 by Milan Matra. Translated by Amy Forsyth. Originally published in Japan by Fujimishobo. Published in US by Yen Press, $10.99, Rated M for Mature. From the back cover: "Severely allergic to felines, Yuuto Amakawa spends his mornings nursing a drippy nose courtesy of his friend Rinko's cat. But on his sixteenth birthday, it's not just Rinko's pet that's riling up his allergies - to say nothing of his hormones! Appearing before him is Himari, a buxom, sword-wielding cat spirit in human guise who has sworn to protect Yuuto, now the target of vengeful spirits! It's clear that Yuuto's allergies are the least of his problems - he's gonna need Himari's help if he wants to live to see his seventeenth birthday!" My Grade: B+ Omamori Himari was adapted into an anime at the beginning of this year in Japan. Here is a promotional trailer for the series:

Manga Review of The Law of Ueki Volume 10 by Tsubasa Fukuchi. Translated and adapted by Kenichiro Yagi. Originally published in Japan by Shogakukan. Published in US by Viz, $9.99, Rated T for Teen. After battling their guts out for 9 volumes, imagine the surprise of Ueki and pals when they find out that their battles were just the FIRST round of the Celestial King Tournament! Something that is different in the second round is that the fighters can form teams of up to 5 people. It goes without saying that Ueki's team consists of himself, Rinko, Seiichiro, and Mori. So all that's left to do is find a fifth member. Rinko remembers hearing of a fearsome combatant named Hideyoshi Soya. The only solid info she can give is that anybody that ever fought against him never wanted to go through the experience twice...oh, and that Soya looks like a gorilla. When they finally do meet him, Ueki and company find out that they are not the only team looking to add Soya. Another team, led by a thug champion named Zack wants Soya on HIS team. Unfortunately for both Ueki and Zack, Soya has decided to set this round out and has no interest in fighting. During this recruitment period leading up to the second round, king candidate champions are allowed to fight each other without penalty. So, technically, you can force someone to join your team...after you beat the snot out of them! I've always enjoyed the wacky nature of this series, with all its dementedly sad super powers, but Volume 10 takes ridiculousness to a new height. For example, one of Zack's goons has the "power to turn beautiful hair into a drill" while another has the the "power to turn rubber balls into acid". I don't want to tell too many of the powers since finding out what they are is half the fun of The Law of Ueki. The character designs are as over the top and gaudy as the powers they wield. Zack, instead of looking the part of the evil villain, looks like someone pressed his head into a point, pulled and extended his eyebrows, and played makeup doll with him. I still enjoyed this volume but it goes a little too far sometimes in terms of goofiness. It is written as a semi-parody of shonen battle manga instead of trying to lay claim to that already cluttered genre. As long as Ueki continues to battle for justice, I will continue to read this series. Just make sure you don't take it too seriously. My Grade: B-

Podcast Episode 63: Manga Review for The Law of Ueki Volume 8 by Tsubasa Fukuchi. Translated and adapted by Yoshiko Tokuhara and Filomila Papakonstantinou. Originally published in Japan by Shogakukan in 2003. Published in the US by Viz, $9.99, Rated T for Teen. Volume 8 picks up mid-battle in a contest between Rinko and Kabara as they battle in the Cat Field. Basically what this means is that have been shrunk down inside a normal house inhabited by hungry cats. The first one to get eaten by a cat loses the match. In addition, you can turn your opponent into a mouse by touching a cat's nose. Then it's on to one of the main events of volume 8 as Ueki faces off against the seemingly treacherous Sano, who for some inexplicable reason has joined Robert's 10. Can Ueki find out why he switched sides and free him from the clutches of Robert Haydn? See Episode 37 for an overview of the series and a review of Volume 7. My Grade: A
