Chained (2012), Honeymoon (2014), and Relic (2020) With over 60 episodes so far in our podcast history, we realized that in all that we covered, we had never covered anything by a woman director. We knew we needed to change that. Going through the history of women directors, we realized that not only wasn't something new, but have been working in the industry since the beginning of film. And in the last two decades, have really started to show their stuff. So to help celebrate Women's History Month, we figured it was well past due that we tackle three films that were directed by women, once again, picking three random titles, but amazed to find just how similar they were to each other, not to mention being very effective in their craft, and storytelling. Movies mentioned in this episode: American Mary (2012), Army of Darkness (1992), The Babadook (2014), Chained (2012), Cockney vs Zombies (2012), Coffy (1973), Dead Hooker in a Trunk (2009), Fear Street: Part One 1994 (2021), Fear Street: Part Two 1978 (2021), Fear Street: Part Three 1666 (2021), Ganja and Hess (1973), Ginger Snaps (2000), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Honeymoon (2014), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), In My Skin (2002), Inside (2007), Invasion of the Body Snatcher (1956), Kids (1995), Look What Happened to Rosemary's Baby (1976), Maniac (1980), The Monster and the Girl (1914), Near Dark (1987), The Nightingale (2018), Pet Sematary (1989), The Pit and the Pendulum (1913), The Relic (1997), Relic (2020), A Serbian Film (2010), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Starry Eyes (2014), Slumber Party Massacre (1982), Street Trash (1987), The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), Vampire (1915)

Nate James is an independent soul artist with a successful career to date, having sold over a million albums, received MOBO nominations and urban music awards, and he has headlined festivals across Europe. He has also toured with the likes of Amy Winehouse and John Legend. Nate joins Alexa today to fly the flag for the music industry's LGBTQIA+ community, sharing his own personal story, including how his school teacher supported him in his early years. He discusses the response to particularly gay male-presenting singers within music, which is the topic of his thesis. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nate has encountered numerous instances of individuals concealing their sexuality as a means of advancing their careers within the music industry. This was particularly widespread during the 1980s, a period marked by substantial stigma and apprehension related to HIV and AIDS. Nate also observed the adoption of coded language and individuals altering their personas when interacting with specific individuals to mask their true identities. It wasn't long ago that if you were gay and in a boy band you couldn't come out as it would hurt the record label financially. Now acts are actively signed because they are gay or trans because it's seen by some in the industry as a marketing tool. Freddie Mercury once told a friend that he didn't come out as gay because he didn't want to tarnish the brand that Queen had built. It was an admirable thing to do in one way to protect his bandmates' livelihoods, but tragic on a personal level for him. As a student, Nate discovered solace and security with his teachers after experiencing bullying from fellow classmates due to his sexuality and race. He would confide in them, sharing how disheartened he felt that expressing his passion for dance and singing provoked homophobic reactions. BEST MOMENTS ‘I was effectively living two lives, that's the case for most gay male pop stars' ‘You can't tell someone to be themselves but have parameters and boundaries over that' ‘From the consumers point of view things have got better, but if you look beneath it there's still a lot to be done' EPISODE RESOURCES Social Media: Instagram: @thenatejames Facebook: Nate James Official Relevant Links & Mentions: Artist Mentioned: George Michael; Wham; Little Nas X; Frank Ocean; Duncan James; Stephen Gately; Will Young; Freddie Mercury; Da Brat; Elton John; Harry Styles; Sam Smith; Kim Petras; Charlie Kristensen (#CheerUpCharlie): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNPMcAgo2byrS6XgbuH3udA Daniel Lismore: https://www.daniellismore.com/ London College of Contemporary Music (LCCM): https://www.lccm.org.uk Do you have a burning question on the voice or being a singing teacher? BEFORE being detained in Russia and eventually being exchanged in a prisoner swap for the notorious criminal known as “The Merchant of Death”, women's basketball star Brittney Yevette Griner was born on October 18th, 1990 in the city of Houston, Texas. For the most part, Britney's upbringing was relatively ordinary as the youngest of four children being raised by a homemaker and a police officer. But sooner rather than later it became clear to Griner, as well as everyone else, that she was far from what most people would consider to be ordinary. In the pages of her memoir, “In My Skin”. Brittney knew from an early age that she was attracted to girls -- and because that didn't fit in with the preconceived notion that many people had back then for girls attending middle-school, she was often taunted and referred to as a boy. The worst times came in Seventh Grade and at the end of far too many school days, Brittney would retire to her room to cry and question why she was even alive in the first place.

French born South African based sisters Noemie Debray ("Mie") (guitar, vocals) and Camille Debray ("Mille") (bass guitar, vocals) are better known by their band name The Soapgirls. With a fantastic back story behind the name (listen to the interview to find out), The Soapgirls are a breath of fresh air on the music scene, with their carefree and liberal approach to music adding layers of fun and enjoyment seldom seen in the modern music world. The highly talented sisters have released four studio albums since 2011 and are on the verge of album number four, In My Skin, which will be released on June 18.Their music has taken The Soapgirls all over the world, but it is their dedication to their craft and explosive live performances that have seen the duo become more than another passing musical fad and elevated them into a realm where anything is possible should you have the desire and fortitude to reach out for it.The two girls sat down with HEAVY for a highly entertaining and fun interview which often veered off into tangents of varying degrees, with each sister often finishing off the other one's sentences in a kind of telepathic connection that transcribes to their music. We started by asking what to expect from In My Skin musically."It's very different to any of the other albums we've done before,” Mille began, “which obviously is a good thing because some people tend to stick with a sound, but we've gone very diverse. We've both always mixed our love of different genres together, so this album is no different in that regard, but...""It's also because with every album you experience new things,” Mie took over, “and how you react to them maybe is different as you grow in life. I would say it's probably our most personal album and also there's a lot of maybe heavier songs on there.""And a lot of melancholy songs, which is good,” Mille added."It's great when you're feeling suicidal mate,” Mie laughed with a damn fine rendition of the Australian accent, one of many hilarious moments that punctuate the chat.In the full interview, the girls talk more about the songs on In My Skin, their sound and where it comes from, the importance of connection with your fans, the genesis of The Soapgirls and how it turned into what you hear today, their current tour and how it is going, what to expect from their live show, artistic freedom and the confusion that comes with it, future plans and more.
Spoiler Alert! In My Skin is a coming-of-age story about a Welsh girl Bethan as she explores the mirth and misery of an unusual girlhood - her mother has bipolar disorder and her dad is an abusive alcoholic. This show stole my heart with its second season. I talk about its creator Kayleigh Lleweylln, how her talent reminds me of Phoebe Waller-bridge, and how she pulls heart and soul into this show which is based on her upbringing. I was crying my eyes out watching the tragedy unfolding for Bathan, but also was so touched by how she manages to fight back and build her own life. Its leading actor Gabrielle Creevy is going to have her time in the near future - mark my words! And cannot wait for Kayleigh's future works.MusicIn My Skin (Music from the BBC programme) by Nick Forster / Oli JulianReferencesPodcast - Griefcast ep 9Podcast - Cascade Talks with 'In My Skin' writer, Kayleigh LlewellynBFI interview - Kayleigh Llewellyn: How I made it as TV screenwriterMy telegram channel @MinchesterReviewhttps://t.me/MinchesterReview

After being largely ignored by cinema-goers around the globe, James takes a chance on Ridley Scott's The Last Duel with rewarding results. Sticking closer to home, he also praises another criminally under-watched British gem In My Skin. Dan remains predictable and consumes two new Crime dramas; HBO's Landscapers and Netflix's True Story. We also collectively discuss The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for our "vintage" movie review. Listeners might find it refreshing that Marvel-related speculation is absent from this week's Reel News segment. Instead, as it 'Tis the season to be jolly' we discuss Santa Inc., HBO's latest animated comedy which has been massively review bombed. We also touch on the cinematic capitalization of the festive period. Finally, we change the tone as we delve into the critically revered Tick, Tick... Boom! Neither of us can be considered musical aficionados but can we sing from the same hymn sheet, look past our inexperience and appreciate a finely tuned biographical drama?

Benedict Spence has shot The End Of The F***ing World (season 2), In My Skin, Charlie Brooker's Wipe, commercials for Visa, Samsung, Playstation, Microsoft and Mastercard. Edgar Dubrovskiy has shot feature documentaries including The The Mystery Of DB Cooper (HBO/BBC), Mark Ronson: From the Heart (BBC), Running in North Korea (Vice/Olympic Channel), commercials for Bentley, Adidas, Cos, Swarovski and Beats. I've recently discovered Ben has a file where he writes down his fails and mistakes. I also have a file where I've been writing down my fails and mistakes. This week, we are joined by Georgina Allan, film editor for the Radical Art Review to talk about women in horror, specifically focusing on Julia Ducournau's Raw and Alice Lowe's Prevenge and their representations of women as complex protagonists and instigators of violence (as opposed to helpless victims or mindless monsters). Picks of the week include Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson's mind warping, beautiful Synchronic and Channel 4 series Adult Material, a three-dimensional, intelligent and nuanced look at the world of porn and the tendrils that reach into all spheres of public and private life. This is the podcast where each week we'll meet a guest who’ll help us pay attention to something we should know about, but maybe don’t. This week, we're talking about body acceptance and censorship; the plus size modelling industry, the co-opting of body positivity, and being thrust into the role of activist. Nyome Nicholas-Williams is a plus size model who has worked with brands including Adidas, Boots and Dove. She's also an activist and describes herself as an advocate for mental health, body love and acceptance. In 2020, she made headlines after portraits of her were repeatedly removed from Instagram, sparking a campaign and the hashtag, #IwanttoseeNyome, eventually leading to an Instagram policy change. If you want to learn more, here's where to find Nyome and her recommendations: Instagram: @curvynyome Something to read: Vice article ‘How Three Women Forced Instagram to Change its Nudity Policy’ Something to listen to: Podcast ‘The Skin You’re In: My Skin, My Beauty With Nyome Nicholas-Williams’ Get involved and join in the conversation: Follow @gemmastyles and send in your messages and questions to goodinfluencepod@gmail.com

Join me and my favorite visual storyteller, Priscila Smith, as we talk about fashion and feelings! Moving through our daily life can leave us numb to what we truly feel inside. Priscila recounts a turning point in life where she started taking cues from her post-partum fashion rut. She took some cues from a moment in the Zara dressing room & some real talk from her mom. This pivotal moment helped her dive deeper into her own emotional literacy. Listen in, laugh a little, & let's learn to live again. This is a special episode in a new series called In My Skin -- aimed at exploring conversation around racism in hopes we can all learn how to combat it. The series launches with Model, Designer Dani Evans, who has taught me so much in these last few weeks and made me think about racial inequality in a way I never have before. She opened my eyes to a whole world of ways in which our Black friends are discriminated against ON A DAILY BASIS from the day they come into this world. My heart hurts for Dani and countless others who have been dismissed, looked at with suspicion or mentioned as lesser than in conversation by their white friends. If you do one thing related to #antiracism - please listen to Dani Evan's words. She is a ray of light leading us all to a better future.
Jo Hartley is one of Britain's finest actors - but you wouldn't know it from listening to this gem of an episode. Self-deprecating, grounded and always humble, Jo undercuts every achievement with a gag and a laugh, to make for an incredibly warm episode. What's more, this is someone who is very much living the "Balance" life - even on lockdown. Meditation, reading, exercise, a love of Carl Jung and a routine of work ensures Jo still has the world by the tail. What's more, her body of work speaks for itself: This Is England, Dead Man's Shoes, AfterLife, In My Skin and so much more. This is a hugely inspiring episode for anyone who feels like they're doing the hard yards - sometimes it's important to take stock and look at everything you've achieved so far. And, if you're like Jo, you know the future will be even brighter. As you'll discover, we started chatting from the off, and so the episode joins us very much mid-chat.This episode is sponsored by CBII – to find out more about CBD oil you can trust click here.Want to work with Balance? The Vern is joined by horror's own professor Zoe Rose Smith of https://zobowithashotgun.com/ to discuss the French body horror feature, In My Skin. It's about a woman who finds gratification by mutilating her body. Ahoy-hoy, kids, and welcome to episode 244 of BTK. This one has been a long motherfucking time coming as Luke and I will finally be reviewing one of my very favorite French horror films ever, “In My Skin”. Yes, I know, I am being a total francophobe jerk who loses horror points by not using the proper French name for it. You know what, though? Fuck you. Yeah, fuck you right in your elitist horror assholes. I live in Canada and travel to Quebec at least once a week. I am goddamn SURROUNDED by French. So allow me the English title, will ya’? I kid, I just don’t want to have to look up the proper spelling. Yep, I am that lazy. Enjoy the show, everyone.
