CineAre you about to experience the most adorable episode of Cinebuds ever? It's hard to say definitively, but considering the podcast has somehow never reviewed a film from the Paddington Cinematic Universe, the cute factor will be pretty high for this one.The latest entry in the series featuring the duffle-coat-wearing ursine, Paddington in Peru, puts the premise right there in the title. Paddington receives some concerning news about his Aunt Lucy from the Home for Retired Bears in and crosses an ocean — with the Brown family in tow — to learn that she's vanished. So, with help from Antonio Banderas, they set out to find her. And maybe discover an ancient treasure. In a very on brand sort of way, both of our cuddly hosts came into this episode as fans of the previous Paddington movies. One of them even listens to the voice of Ben Wishaw (as Paddington, of course) at bedtime because it's “delightful and gentle and kind.”Not to give too much away, but only two of those adjectives apply to Paddington in Peru. Whether it's because the previous films set a very high bar or the latest entry didn't quite coalesce the way those others did, Dori and Kpolly weren't quite as tickled this time around.Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

Three Paddington films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Paddington (2014), Paddington 2 (2017) and Paddington in Peru (2024) and our general reactions to the films, especially those of us who haven't seen a Paddington film before. We talk about the work of writer and director Paul King, including The Mighty Boosh and Wonka (2023), and praise the work of first-time director Dougal Wilson. We discuss the cast and performances in the films, including the work of Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Emily Mortimer, Ben Wishaw, Jessica Hynes, Matt Lucas, Peter Capaldi, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Brendan Gleeson and Noah Taylor. We praise the films' visuals, especially Paddington's animation. This extends into a discussion of live-action, special effects, visual effects and computer generation. We touch on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), the work of Ray Harryhausen - Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981), the original Godzilla (1954), King Kong (1933), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Doctor Who (1963-) and The Thing (1982).

Victims of stalking could be given more protection from their abusers under new government proposals. The Home Office has today revealed six new measures to tackle the problem of stalking which is so prolific - official figures show that one in five women aged 16 and over in England and Wales have been a victim of stalking at least once. Eduard Limonov was a poet, a punk, a Russian “émigré” and provocateur whose anti-system politics eventually saw him embrace fascist tendencies. Filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov tells Olivia Salazar-Winspear why he chose to make a “ballad” of Limonov's life and not a biopic, revealing that British actor Ben Wishaw even had the Russian crew members fooled with his impressive embodiment of the character. Serebrennikov tells us how Limonov's political arc follows the far right movements within contemporary Russia and mirroring the geopolitical situation around the world. And, as an immigrant himself, the award-winning director tells us why he thinks Moscow's attempts to silence Russian artists means the government has little influence over those who criticise it.

Anyone else so emotionally invested in Netflix's One Day to the point it's all you can think about? Just me? Didn't think so! Well, prepare yourself as today we are joined by the show's star, Ambika Mod.  In case you have missed the show of the year/ the best show ever, One Day is based on the best selling book by David Nicholls and follows Ambika's Emma and Dexter (played by Leo Woodall) on the same day, for 20 years as they go from crush, to friendship and the rest is a plot spoiler so I'll leave it to your imagination. (Note: there are plot spoilers in this episode,so consider yourself warned!) In today's episode Ambika joins me to talk about her journey from stand up comedy to landing a role she had secretly manifested for decades in One Day. We also chat about the importance of representation, overcoming imposter syndrome, and Ambika tells me about her own journey with mental health after starring alongside Ben Wishaw in the heartbreaking BBC adaptation of Adam Kay's This is Going To Hurt (which if you missed it, you need to add to your watch list right now!).  This episode is also a mini reunion as it turns out that Ambika and I actually worked at Conde Nast together at the same time! But another reason I love this episode so much, and admire Ambika is because she is a symbol of what you can achieve if you work hard and stay so damn determined. So I hope you will be just as inspired as I am, to get out there and chase your dreams.  If you love this episode as much as me please get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts as I would love a debrief on One Day with you! Based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews, writer/director Sarah Polley guides an incredible ensemble cast to some incredible heights. The film takes place over the course of three days and two nights in an agrarian Mennonite society where every woman- and most girls- has experienced a sexual assault and a gaslighting about it (it was a ghost, it was the devil, you made it up... infuriating). The women meet in a barn to discuss their options. Produced by Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt, amongst others, the mostly-female cast is led by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, McDormand, Judith Ivey, Kate Hallett, Sheila McCarthy, August Winter, and Ben Wishaw. Seven people would die in what was at the time the worst road accident in British history. Fifty years later, thirty three people would die at Dibble's Bridge in identical circumstances. Nearly fifty years on, this crash remains the worst road accident in British history. It took another 20 years for seatbelts to become mandatory on coaches. Along the way: David Bowie ingratiates himself with the people of Sunderland! Hello! You are listening to a mini series 'Meditation on Med' where I talk about medical-related TV, film or book. In this part, I talk about a hit British TV show This Is Going to Hurt and an acclaimed TV-film Help. Both works look at how Britain's health system functions under increasing stress. In This is Going to Hurt (03:26), we follow junior doctor Adam Kay's hectic life at labour wards during the year 2006. This is an ace TV production, tragicomedy at its best. I was utterly impressed by the ensemble: every small role shines and, for the leading actor, Ben Wishaw, needless to say, nailed the meanness and kindness of Adam beautifully. The show also allows us to look behind the system, to have a peek into how the medical legal system works, the drastic difference between a private hospital and an NHS one, among others.Major spoiler alert from 10:55 - 13:06Really, you should have a look at this show: it is so good!Help (14:02), starring the amazing Jodie Comer, is a much chilling TV-film. It follows Jodie's character Sarah, a new care-taker at a Liverpool Care Home, during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. The unapologetically raw depiction of care home workers and residents living with scarce PPE during the pandemic is difficult to watch. But Jodie's performance is moving and powerful. The film also brings back memories of mine during early 2020. Truly an important film of this era. In the next episode of this series, I'll dive into Dr Paul Kalanithi's memoir When Breath Becomes Air, another great piece of work on medicine, mortality, and the meaning of life. Coky Giedroyc and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film How To Build a Girl, friendship, loyalty and family, discovery and how life unfolds in front of us in a real, messy and wonderful way and the uncertain personal journeys we all seem to take. Synopsis: Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is a sixteen-year-old, extrovert from the outskirts of Wolverhampton with raging hormones and gigantic dreams. Even though she loves her big, boisterous, dysfunctional family, Johanna knows with absolute certainty that there is something bigger and better for her out in the world. And when she finds it, only then will she start ‘being me’. But quite what ‘me’ is, hasn’t been invented yet. With her inimitable wit and bottomless imagination, writing is surely her ticket to a brand-new self. After a couple of false starts, Johanna wins a job at top music magazine, D&ME and reinvents herself as revered and feared music critic – Dolly Wilde, the enfant terrible. As she slaughters her way to greater and greater success, the lines between Johanna Morrigan and Dolly Wilde begin to haze. Can she curate her success and hold onto her family, her heroes and her heart? And once you’ve built your girl, is it possible to tear her down and start again? Based on the novel by Caitlin Moran, How To Build a Girl is an irreverent coming of age comedy about what it’s really like to be a girl. About the Director: Coky Giedroyc is a British, critically acclaimed director most recently celebrated for her work on Harlots, written by Moira Buffini for Monumental Television and Hulu.
