Wondering what Penelope Featherington's life would have really been like as a "spinster?" What about newlywed Kate Bridgerton as a married woman? Or how about Lady Danbury as a widow? In our final episode of Beyond Bridgerton we speak with author and historian Charlotte Furness about the real lives of married, single and widowed women in upper class Britain during the Regency period and compare them to their Bridgerton counterparts. We explored what it really would have been like to look for husbands on the marriage mart, live an independent life like ambitious Eloise Bridgerton and how women lived through scandal and heartbreak in Georgian society. Through examples from her book Lady of the House: Elite 19th Century Women and Their Role in the English Country House, Charlotte chats with us about women in history who were instrumental in running estates such as Lampton Hall, Belvoir Castle and Shibden Hall and reality vs fiction of depictionsof these upperclass women in period dramas and historical fiction. In jeglicher Hinsicht. With the results of the election comes upheaval in Hallifax. Shibden Hall may have narrowly escaped violence but with her hands in so many pots in town, how long until her many business ventures and lending habits come back to harm the Lister estate? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bamboozledcreators/support
Ok things are getting spicy and we're getting a little hot under the collar ☆☆☆Warning: ABUSE TRIGGER - THIS EPISODE CONTAINS THEMES OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION AND MAY BE TRIGGERING TO SOME LISTENERS☆☆☆ Interesting things are brewing politically in town and Anne, as usual, makes sure she is right in the thick of things helping to shape the community around her. Clare goes to Halifax to walk with a group of Muslim men who came together to support each other to become mentally and physically fitter through walking in the countryside around Halifax. One of the things the group enjoys about their town is the ability to be out into beautiful countryside within ten minutes - albeit up some very steep hills! The group's leader is Zaheer Khalil. He is passionate about the benefits of fresh air and walking. He also believes walking is a way of connecting with other people outside of their immediate community. They are a group of professional men who started to find their lives becoming stressful, unhealthy and at times overwhelming. The walks have helped them come together to keep fit and also share problems. They are all passionate about their town and keen to give back to the community in many different ways. They are proud of Halifax's industrial heritage, the contributions made by their elders and their own place in its history. Their walk begins and ends at the town's magnificent centrepiece The Piece Hall. All together it's 6.2 miles and takes them from the town centre up Trooper Lane to Beacon Hill before they walk along the ridge and drop down into Shibden Valley through the grounds of Shibden Hall, former home of Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack). After a break at the Shibden Mill Inn nestled amongst the trees by a stream, another steep climb takes the group up Lee Lane to Ploughcroft, which offers another panorama of Halifax. There is then a gradual descent back towards the town centre, via Claremount and North Bridge, finishing off in the opulent Georgian splendour of the Piece Hall plaza for the guys' customary chai and samosas. Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Now You Know, one podcast that gives you lesser-known trivia, anecdotes, and even facts about popular films and shows. I'm your host Nikhil. The hit BBC series, Gentleman Jack, set in the 19th century England, chronicles the life of industrialist Anne Lister, one of history's first openly lesbian women. Created by Sally Wainwright, the series stars Suranne Jones in the lead as Anne Lister. Gentleman Jack has returned for a second season this past month with the season finale expected to air on the 29th of May and can be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar in India. Let's get into some trivia now.Gentlemen Jack is adapted from a collection of diaries written by Anne Lister. They contain over 4 million words, with most of them written in a secret code.Anne Lister is described as masculine for her time for regularly wearing black attires and researching and studying subjects that men delved into at the time. This earned her the moniker of ‘Gentleman', which was used as a slur, whereas ‘Jack' was also a slur to describe a lesbian. However, in recent years Anne Lister's outfits have become an inspiration among the British LGBTQ community.Despite facing social stigma, Anne Lister was self-aware of her sexuality and lived openly as a lesbian, which essentially made her modern history's first lesbian. When the show was initially announced as an eight-part series by BBC and HBO in March 2017, it was titled Shibden Hall after the name of Lister's ancestral homeThe show's creator Sally Wainwright grew up in Yorkshire near Shibden Hall. Wainwright had dreamt of creating a drama about Anne Lister's life for nearly 20 years before Gentleman Jack was finally produced.Shibden Hall has now become a very popular tourist destination with its visitors tripling in numbers in recent years after the show's success. As a result, the opening hours have been increased significantly to accommodate this surge in numbers. The exteriors and interiors were used as filming locations for the show.Well, that's the OTTplay Now You Know for today, until the next episode it's your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj kya dekhoge OTTplay se poocho-Written by Ryan Gomez
Q&A on the series Gentleman Jack with creator & showrunner Sally Wainwright, actor and executive producer Suranne Jones, and actor Sophie Rundle. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. It's 1832 in West Yorkshire, England -- the cradle of the evolving Industrial Revolution -- where landowner Anne Lister is determined to save her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, even if it means bucking society's expectations. In addition to reopening the coal mines, a part of Lister's plan to help her family is to marry well. But the charismatic, single-minded Lister -- who dresses head-to-toe in black and charms her way into high society -- has no intention of marrying a man. "Gentleman Jack" examines Lister's relationships with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals, and would-be wife. The real-life Anne Lister's story was recorded in her diaries, and the most intimate details of her life are revealed for the series.
The discovery of the diaries of 19th-century Englishwoman Anne Lister, who wrote in secret code about her love affairs with women and has been called the first modern lesbian. A landowner and a businesswoman, she defied the conventions of the time and was nicknamed 'Gentleman Jack' in the Yorkshire town of Halifax where she lived, because of the way she dressed and acted. Louise Hidalgo spoke to Helena Whitbread, who discovered Anne Lister's diaries in 1983 and spent five years decoding them. This programme is a rebroadcast.
Welcome back to the next episode of Past Loves - the weekly history podcast that explores affection, infatuation and attachment across time. This week I am joined by author Angela Steidele who has written several books about LGBTQ+ lives in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, including a biography of Anne Lister. We will, therefore, be delving into the relationship between Anne Lister and Ann Walker.Anne Lister is often described as the 'first modern lesbian' and the diaries that she left provide a wealth of detail about her many passionate relationships with women. After all, in 1821, she wrote in her diaries: ‘I love, & only love, the fairer sex’. When she returned from the continent to Shibden Hall in 1832, she aimed to make the estate a success and find a wife. Her relationship history of labyrinthine complexity thus culminated in a marriage to Ann Walker. Their story is, of course, now at the centre of the smash-hit BBC TV drama series Gentleman Jack. But what is the story behind the dramatisation? It's safe to say it is just as compelling...Where To Find UsShop Angela's book Gentleman Jack: A biography of Anne Lister, Regency Landowner, Seducer and Secret Diarist: https://www.waterstones.com/book/gentleman-jack/katy-derbyshire/angela-steidele/9781788160995Discover more about Angela: https://serpentstail.com/angela-steidele.htmlListen to HRH Princess Mary & The 6th Earl of Harewood episode: https://www.buzzsprout.com/997147/3687205Join the Past Loves newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/d293dd27393a/past-loves-newsletterFollow Past Loves on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pastlovespodcast/ If Past Loves has become your current love, you can email me at pastlovespodcast@gmail.com
Hiiiii Welcome back to The Minchester Review. In this episode, Lassie joined me in discussing her recent trip to Haworth, a town in northern England where the Bronte sisters lived. Haworth has a special place in my heart: I've been a passionate Bronte fan since I was young and I was fortunate to have visited the parsonage museum twice. I enjoyed every minute there and I was glad so did Lassie (maybe minus the waiting time at the bus stop)!Lassie's Haworth experience was a special one because Bronte Museum was freshly reopened and put on some special policies to ensure the safety of staffs and visitors. Also when the bus didn't come in due time, the local people were very kind to help her. We also discussed how the real deal writer's museum/house asks for such a friendly entrance fee while some place with no real deal (cough cough Jane Austen Centre in Bath) charges a lot and how the experience at a National Trust estate differs from that in the Bronte museum.04:15 Lassie's first taste of Yorkshire was to Shibden Hall, Halifax09:00 Unlike the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, the Bronte Parsonage Museum presents real life objects that allows visitors to build an indirect connect with the writers13:33 Catherine's first time to Haworth was a 'very very sunny day', the second time 'not Brontely' neither15:35 With the uncertain prospect of author's house, Lassie finally decided to make the trip to Haworth17:00 You can support Bronte Museum via its Just Giving website18:45 Lassie wants to find out more about Yorkshire because her friend Joe worked there for 6 months as a crew member of ACGAS21:10 Lassie departed from Manchester Victoria Station to Hebden Bridge22:07 Catherine's two travelling experience: one time from Bradford, another from Keighley24:40 National Media Museum, Bradford - a hidden gem in the north25:50 The north provides lots of opportunities for British TV industry talents27:35 The schedule of Covid19 test required Lassie to put the trip on a Sunday when the bus to the museum didn't show up...31:22 The local people in Haworth stepped out to help36:45 Visitors need to book their time slot now39:10 Entrance ticket price is very friendly!43:28 A normal house on the outside, a lot of wonderful things in the inside46:05 Catherine was surprised to find Lassie only spent 1 hour in the main building of Chatsworth House49:20 The museum's policy to control the number of visitors53:08 Anne Bronte's embroidery introduces Lassie to this youngest sister of the Bronte family56:20 Patrick Bronte used to send his daughters' pieces of belongings to fans as souvenirs58:53 Experience in National Trust places can be quite different59:20 Why there is no tea room in the museum?01:01:00 There seemed always to be a study room for the males of the house, but the female writers (Brontes and Elizabeth Gaskell) did not own a study01:12:10 A real wedding at the Haworth church!Music: Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights

On this episode of Pick Of The Podcast we have podcasts about the 2015 Boxing day Floods, Football with Alan Davies and the Tuesday Club, Bradford Author Amit Dhand, Golf Caddie Legend Billy Foster, Shibden Hall and Anne Lister and finally but not least we will be catching up with the General Practice podcast and Doctor Andrew Sixsmith from Keighley. hello@mikedjkelly.co.uk@MikeKellyDisco
The Irish government is proposing that important documents about industrial schools should be sealed for 75 years. But some women who stayed in them, like Rosemary, pictured here when she was a baby, say they don't want the files and testimonies to be kept secret. They say they're crucial, historical documents. The government disagrees, believing it's about confidentiality and preservation. We hear from Rosemary and Elizabeth, women in their 60s and 70s, who describe what it was like living in these places. There's a new film out called Harriet. It's based on the story of Harriet Tubman who escaped slavery in the States in 1849. She became a leading abolitionist. As a ‘conductor’ she enabled hundreds of enslaved people to gain their freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad. The film stars the British actress, Cynthia Erivo. Jane speaks to Kasi Lemmons, the film’s director. Gentleman Jack was on BBC One earlier this year, and ever since visitors have flocked to Shibden Hall. They've also traveled to Halifax and York to see where Anne Lister lived and worked. Many are lesbians who've been inspired by her story. As hundreds sign up to attend the Anne Lister Festival next year, we hear why Shibden has become an important trip for gay women and the impact it’s had on local tourism. A mythic bird-woman stalks abusers. An old lady calmly switches off her own heart. And a grieving daughter breast-feeds in a car-park as her mother’s grave is dug. Sarah Hall’s unsettling new collection of short stories explores female rage and whether we're ever really able to change.

Growing up, Sally Wainwright visited Shibden Hall, a historic house and park in West Yorkshire. But she wasn't taught much about Anne Lister, who had lived there in the 19th century. Years later, Wainwright learned that Lister was truly ahead of her time: a businesswoman and a gay-marriage pioneer. Wainwright tells us about ‘Gentleman Jack,' her new HBO-BBC series based on the extraordinary life of Lister.
