Happy Halloween, listeners! It's the most wonderful day of the year, if you're a spook, spectre, or masked maniac. And to mark All Hallow's Eve, here's a treat (not a trick), as we've put together a terrifying double bill of interviews for you. Well, the interviews are fun, although you might find some of Chris Hewitt's questions terrifying as he sits down with Damian Lewis, star of The Radleys, to talk about playing not one but two vampires, and Brian Netto & Adam Schindler, directors of Don't Move. But that's not all — Netto and Schindler are joined by their producer, one Sam Raimi. And if you've listened to the Empire Podcast before, you'll know that that's a pretty big deal for our Chris. Both interviews are tons of fun, and at one point Chris gets super-nerdy about Evil Dead II with Raimi, which is groovy. And after you've listened to this, why not give The Radleys (on Sky Cinema now) and Don't Move (on Netflix) a whirl? Enjoy.
This week we cover Lawrence Kasdan's Stephen King mess of a film, "Dreamcatcher." We discuss everything from the making of the film to Morgan Freeman's stupid giant eyebrows. Acting great Damian Lewis stopped by to chat about his vampiric new film, the Radleys, as well as shedding light on his return as King Henry 8th in the much anticipated new series of Wolf Hall.
Damian Lewis grew up in North London and, after a spell in boarding school, returned to the city to study acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company before transitioning to television. Damian's breakout role came in Band of Brothers, which was the most expensive TV show of all-time, in 2001. His portrayal of Nicholas Brody in Homeland earned him both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. His latest film, The Radleys, is adapted from a book by Matt Haig and tells the story of a family of vampires. Nick mixes an Old-Fashioned for Damian while Angela prepares caponata bruschetta to start, followed by hearty pumpkin risotto, inspired by a butternut squash recipe by Martha Collison. The experts at Waitrose pair this with a Gabriel Meffre Côte du Rhône. Damian Lewis is the perfect dinner-guest; he arrives hungry and armed with excellent anecdotes. Our trio cover how to cook octopus, what Tom Hanks is like on set and where Damian keeps his awards. Two very different directors talk about two very different films on this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. First-up, Kevin Smith talks about his 1980s set comedy, The 4:30 Movie and then later in the episode Euros Lyn discusses his vampire-comedy, The Radleys. Kevin Smith was one of the leading figures in the 1990s independent film scene. His self-financed low-budget comedy Clerks was a massive success and he went on to make the likes of Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and others. Working with rep company that includes the likes of Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes and Matt Damon, Smith's films have also had a strong autobiographical bent, incorporating moments and characters from his own life and adding his own style of acerbic wit. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie is his most autobiographical yet- a 1980s set coming of age story that not only takes place within the confines of Smith's home state of New Jersey - but also his very own SmodCastle cinema. It's a witty and heartfelt film that delivers the goods for fans of his work and those looking for a well-honed comedy. Kevin Smith talks about digging into his past to make the film, shooting in your own cinema - as well as the possibility of a Mallrats sequel. To say that Welsh director Euros Lyn has had an illustrious career would be an understatement. His career as a director is littered with some of the television's top shows including - Casualty, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Daredevil, His Dark Materials and Heartstopper. Lyn's new film, The Radleys is based on Matt Haig's book of the same name - and it stars Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as a married couple with a young family - and they all just happen to be vampires. Euros Lyn's chat about The Radleys covers bringing the material to the screen and getting such a great cast for his vampire film.

So many layers today...Hours before he was due to appear at the 10th anniversary service of thanksgiving at St Paul's, Harry was spotted leaving an event. Harry waved and said "hello" to onlookers. Holding a black folder under his arm, Harry was asked if he was "happy to be home", to which he simply chuckled and dodged the question by saying: "Nice to see you."We'll take that as no.Royal expert Charlotte Griffiths She claimed Harry made "certain demands" about who could be in the room for a meeting with the King, and who couldn't. One wonders if the couldn't includes Camilla, the wicked stepmother.Royal expert Rupert Bell suggested to TalkTV "Maybe the King just feels like he's not ready, emotionally, as well as anything else, to have even 30 minutes with his son."Thirty minutes isn't really enough time to get beyond the small talk stage. What they really needs is some honest-to-goodness father and son time."On Wednesday, Prince Harry made a poignant entrance into St. Paul's Cathedral, adorned with four medals proudly displayed on his blazer, accompanied by another around his neck. His attire spoke volumes about his dedicated service and commitment to various causes. The medals adorning his blazer included the Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, each symbolizing different milestones and achievements in his service to the nation.Around his neck, he wore a star, a distinguished emblem signifying his status as the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO), further highlighting his esteemed position within the royal hierarchy. However, amidst the solemnity of the occasion, Prince Harry appeared to stand alone, without any other members of the royal family by his side. While he attended the Invictus Games service at St. Paul's Cathedral, his absence was notable at Buckingham Palace, where the King hosted the inaugural annual garden party, joined by other senior royals. As he entered St. Paul's Cathedral, Prince Harry greeted the crowd with a warm smile and a wave, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and resilience that defines the Invictus Games. His presence at the event, where he was slated to deliver a reading alongside actor Damian Lewis, served as a poignant reminder of his ongoing commitment to serving those who have sacrificed for their country.Harry received a warm welcome from the Dean, the Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, as he was escorted to his seat beneath the cathedral's majestic dome.Taking his place beside his mentor, Mark Dyer, Prince Harry engaged in a brief exchange with his uncle, Earl Spencer.Acknowledging the stark realities of conflict and its aftermath, the Dean lamented, "We lament the pain, cost, and indignity of war and terror, and pray for a world where justice shall reign and where the nations will find their longed-for unity.""We recall, with admiration, the skill and determination of those who seek to repair, rehabilitate, and reclaim the lives of those living with serious illness or injury: changing and saving lives."..Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News "Mike Tindall, who is the husband of Zara, the King's niece, has been given a high position to do something about the Invictus Games."I think Harry is absolutely furious about this. It has been announced, but very quietly." The Royal Family presented a united front in support of King Charles at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the summer season. His Majesty was joined by Queen Camilla, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester for the event.Charles, dressed in a distinguished grey suit paired with a light blue waistcoat, greeted the gathered crowds with a smile as he entered the garden alongside the Queen.Buckingham Palace announced Prince William and his father would be sharing a joint engagement in the upcoming week. William will be bestowed with the distinguished title of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps.Prior to Prince Harry's decision to step back from royal responsibilities four years ago, it was widely speculated that he would assume this prestigious role, considering his deep connection with the regiment he had bravely served alongside during his time in Afghanistan until 2014.The timing of the announcement, however, raised eyebrows among royal observers. "Timing is everything," remarked one insider. Another insider noted that the King's choice to pass on this cherished role to his eldest son, coupled with the apparent lack of a meeting with Prince Harry, is likely to be interpreted as a deliberate messageRoyal Insider Deep Crown tells us, “"The timing of Prince William's appointment as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps is no accident." And as for the King being busy, Deep Crown quipped, remarks Deep Crown, a seasoned royal insider. "Even I could secure 15 minutes with the King this week, if His Majesty had wanted to make time for me."
Prince Harry will indeed return to Britain in May to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.. Following the celebration, he will join his wife, Meghan, on a visit to Nigeria, according to his spokesperson. On May 8, Harry will attend a service at St Paul's Cathedral in London to mark a decade of the Invictus Games, which have been credited with "changing lives and saving lives through sport." The service will feature readings by Harry and British actor Damian Lewis, with wounded veterans and members of the Invictus community also in attendance.Following the anniversary celebration, Harry will be joined by Meghan,, on a trip to Nigeria. The couple has been invited by the country's chief of defence staff, its highest-ranking military official. No further details about the Nigeria visit have been disclosed. Some reports went out of their way to point out Meghan would apparently rather fly 7800 miles by herself than join Harry at Invictus. It is anticipated that no royals will attend the Invictus ceremony. Royal sources believe Harry will stay in a hotel during his time in the UK.
In the second half of our Not For Everyone Podcast recommendations, we're watching another Stephen King adaptation - 2003's “Dreamcatcher”. A film in which Morgan Freeman's eyebrows are designed to stop pigeons nesting; Damian Lewis auditions to play the Joker as Hugh Laurie; and Jason Lee just needs to leave those fucking toothpicks where they are! For a film about killer worms that burrow into your arse; “Dreamcatcher” has a remarkably glossy and expensive look, with a cast of big names. Written by King whilst high on painkillers, the story has a lot of similarities with his classic “It”, even down to its fictional location. Somehow though, the film manages to either take itself too seriously or not seriously enough, and may have been improved for amping up the (toilet) humour of the premise. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

Remember the Movie Dreamcatcher from 2003? This movie has a stacked cast with Thomas Jane, Jason Lee, Timothy Olyphant, Damian Lewis, Tom Sizemore & Morgan Freeman. A great Director & Screenwriter and it is based on a Stephen King book, what can go wrong? Well, the reviews aren't that great, the Box Office was not that good and that is just the beginning. We were surprised at the lackluster preview and we were even more surprised that we didn't exactly agree on the overall quality of this film. Join us as we go back to 2003 and watch a movie about an Alien invasion, a group of friends, a military quarantine, a supernatural mystery, a possession, an escape, a chase, a lot of gross bowel movements, the meaning of bad acting, bad writing, and bad pacing. This movie has a lot to unpack.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

"Flashy campaign assets" like a trailer and key art are certainly part of it, says Paramount Streaming's head of marketing Domenic DiMeglio. But in the modern entertainment business, that's just the tip of the iceberg. In reality, he says, you need hundreds of assets that will appear on every platform, and a plan to "manage the customer life cycle as part of that process." "There's just so much that goes into successfully building and managing and executing a campaign that you don't necessarily see beyond those flashy moments," Domenic says. "... If you're not placing that trailer in the right places, you're not giving it the right fuel to get viewed by folks, then you're also letting it down." Today on Building Better CMOs, Domenic talks with MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart about competing with TikTok for viewers' attention, the science of making an entertaining trailer, why Paramount bundled Showtime into the streaming service Paramount+, and more. They also discuss how to lead with empathy, the success of the company's free ad-supported streamer Pluto TV, and the return of Damian Lewis' character Axe to Showtime's "Billions." We're revisiting the big budget adaptation of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher at long last! Not only is the film celebrating its 20th anniversary, it's also a movie Dan's been wanting to cover since he started reading the book 5 years ago when we started this podcast! He's finally finished it, despite a canine mishap midway through, so here we are... And what a spectacle it is. An isolated snowy landscape, an alien invasion, possession, red fungal infections, a group of friends with psychic powers... there's a lot going on in this one! And the pedigree of the artists behind it is astonishing: Lawrence Kasdan, the writer of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back, directs and co-scripts with Misery adapter and The Princess Bride scribe William Goldman, with a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Damian Lewis, Jason Lee, Timothy Olyphant, Thomas Jane, Tom Sizemore and Donnie Wahlberg. And special effects by ILM! What could possibly go wrong?! A lot, it turns out. But is it still worthy of freedom from the oubliette? Find out! Follow us on Threads, Facebook, Instagram and maybe Twitter, if it's still functioning. Support us on Patreon to nominate future films, vote on whether films should be released or thrown back, and access exclusive bonus content!

'Billions' star Damian Lewis' first Broadway show was 'Hamlet.' It was also the first show in which he took a sword to the face (Originally aired 3/11/2019) | 'Billions' is more than just a role for Paul Giamatti. It's also an education in erotic sadomasochism, since he says he does his own S&M stunts (Originally aired 3/20/2019) | Corey Stoll also talks Shakespeare with Stephen, and confesses that he wouldn't know what to do with a billion dollars, despite portraying someone who does in "Billions" on Showtime (Originally aired 1/14/2022). In honor of July 4, we re-release an episode of Rog's HBO "Band of Brothers" Podcast with Damian Lewis. The Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning actor – whose portrayal of Major Dick Winters is the centrifugal force of Band of Brothers – reflects on why a classically-trained, well-heeled Englishman was cast as a salt-of-the-earth American war hero, and why two decades later, Band of Brothers remains more than just a job. Listen down the entire Band of Brothers Podcast on all major Pod platforms. Who can name a weirder Stephen King story? Honestly. Between the farting, the burping, the slimy aliens, and the toothy dick snakes coming out of people's asses… wait where was I going with this? We spend about 10 minutes making fun of Mr. Gray's accent, but turns out Damian Lewis is british? Oops, we didn't know (clearly). Also, we cry. A lot. As ridiculous as this movie is, reading the book made me love every second and I would DIE FOR DUDDITS. ps. George Lucas stops by for a quick lawsuit. pps. If you're only here out of spite, thank you. All the views help boost the numbers
Disclaimer: SPOILERS!! Juan, Mark, and Kevin step into the way, way back machine to cap off their trip to the past for the "Decades" special series. It was Kevin's choice. He had the daunting task of finding a movie from the 2000's that none of us had ever seen. This quest led him to "The Escapist", directed by Rupert Wyatt and starring Brian Cox, Liam Cunningham, Dominic Cooper, Joseph Fiennes, Damian Lewis, and Seu Jorge. Frank is in jail for life but when his daughter finds herself in mortal danger, he expediently puts together a crew and a plan to bust out of the clank. When opposing forces catch wind of the scheme, they aim to complicate things. Will Frank and crew be able to find success or will it all just be a fool's errand? Navid Negahban is a celebrated Iranian-born actor. As he likes to say, he's played ‘The Big Bad Wolf' in several productions including “Homeland” where he was terrorist mastermind Abu Nazir, “Damascus Cover” where he played the evil Syrian General Surraj, and “The Cleaning Lady” where he played an Armenian mob boss. But on the lighter side Navid also starred as the Sultan in the live action remake of “Aladdin”. And he's currently performing in “The Old Man” along with Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. However, his acting successes only occurred following his harrowing journey out of Iran, through several countries, until he finally arrived in the United States. In this episode we first discuss Navid's journey before he became a star in the U.S. and then some of his epic roles. My featured song is “Out Of Tahini” from Play by my band, Project Grand Slam. The Cardinals came into town and we bounced back taking 2 out of 3. Highs were Kelenic continuing his hot streak with a couple more dingers, Castillo pitched great again, Kirby has returned to form Main Event | Seahawks draft preview! We're going to mock the Seahawks first and second round picks. | Seahawks have 1:5; 1:20; 2:37 and 2:52. They have 26 players signed to the 2023 roster (fewest in NFL) and only | 26 million dollars in cap space. It is imperative that they draft impact players at the top and bottom of the draft. | Glaring holes in the lineup: interior and edge d linemen; Strong Safety (Jamal Adams is the only SS on the roster with Ryan Neal getting signed away; WR3 (Dareke Young is de facto WR3 right now but he's totally unproven heading into his second year); Guard (Phil Haynes and Damian Lewis will return as starters but we have no other guards on the roster. | (***NFL Draft music***) with the 5th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select: | Adam -- Will Anderson Jr | Robby -- 3 QBs will be gone, leaving only Will Levis. Levis looks fine but is not the gamechanger thant Young, Stroud or possibly Richardson could be at the position. Needing help on the interior D Line and having a decent track record with "character issue" guys in the past, PCJS will select Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia | With the 20th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select: | Adam -- We will trade this pick along with our 52nd Pick to the Flacons; and select Bijan Robinson | Robby -- This pick will almost certainly get traded to a team at the bottom of the first round who needs an offensive playmaker. If they don't trade it, they take a wide receiver! Jaxson Smith Njigba will be the first WR selected in the NFL draft. He has solid athleticism and very strong route running. He is considered the most pro-ready WR in the class ready to slot into nearly any spot in an NFL offense. If he's available, the Hawks take him. Some mocks have Houston taking him at 12, in which case the Hawks take Zay Flowers out of Boston College. He's short, 5'9" but another great route runner. He would fill into No-E's old slot roll nicely. | With the 37th pick in the NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks select: | Adam -- Joey Porter Jr | V Robby's Hot Take (5 second intro music... 30 seconds w/ 2 mins of discussion and banter) | | | lightning Round | Two listener questions!
This week on Special Sauce, we're revisiting a great 2022 episode about pizza featuring the great pizzaiolo Anthony Mangieri and his friend and fellow pizza lover Billions co-creator Brian Koppelman. At the time pizza purist Mangieri had just reopened Una Pizza Napoletana on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Now because Tony loves sipping espresso in cafes he has recently turned Una into a cafe on Saturday mornings serving coffee, pastries like an olive oil layer cake, and even a mortadella sandwich on house-baked bread. And now in a surprise twist Anthony Mangieri now has a line of frozen pizzas made in Italy with buffalo mozzarella called Genio della Pizza. And when I caught up with Koppelman he told me that he's been so busy with writing and producing season 7 of Billions that will see the return of Damian Lewis and his character Bobby Axelrod, AKA Axe, he hasn't even had time to do much pizza exploring.

In 1973 he formed the Living Theatre Troupe, one of New Zealand's most important experimental companies. He went on to study theatre in China, Japan, and India, then moved to Europe, where he studied with leading European teachers. As Professor of Theatre at the renowned Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Ken has trained some of Britain's top actors and film stars, including EWAN MCGREGOR, LILY JAMES, JOSEPH FIENNES, DOMINIC WEST, JODIE WHITTAKER, DAMIAN LEWIS, HAYLEY ATWELL, RHYS IFANS, MICHELLE DOCKERY, FREDDIE FOX, SIMON RUSSELL BEALE, ORLANDO BLOOM, PAAPA ESSIEDU, and DANIEL CRAIG. Ken is in regular demand internationally and has previously taught at the national drama academies of China, India, New Zealand, and Italy, and he has given courses in the UK, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, USA, and Singapore. As a journalist, he has been a regular feature writer for The Times and was for 15 years a theatre critic for The Guardian. As a public speaker, Ken has given many large-scale presentations in the worlds of business and the arts. He also trains top executives throughout Europe in presentation skills and personal impact. He is about to launch his major online course: Ken Rea Teaches Acting. How do I get better work? And it's a really interesting question so you don't feel stuck in your career. Ask yourself what would that next level look like for you. Let's think about the acting itself. What would that look like? And so that immediately gives you a target. I want to be like this. So you know where you're going. So the next question to ask yourself is, where do you feel you are now? Which then shows you the gap between now where you are and there where you want to be. Then the next question you could ask yourself is, what would you like to have more of in your work? You know, for example, would you like to have more personality in your acting, more sense of danger in your acting, more gravitas, more presence, more charisma, more twinkle in the eye, more playfulness? And that immediately is going to take you out of your comfort zone. Progress happens not inside that comfort zone, but just outside it. That's the life of an actor, to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's your life as an actor, constantly taking risks, working outside that comfort zone. How can you be out of your comfort zone and still enjoy that, you know, and love performing? If you want to be more playful, more twinkle in the eye, more dangerous, what is stopping you from bringing that into the work that's stopping you from being out of your comfort zone? And what can you do about that? It takes a certain amount of comfortability in being yourself to know that you can go emotionally to a specific place and also know and play there, and it is out of your comfort zone and in a danger zone and in a scary zone, a risk zone, as you put it, but also always knowing that you have that anchor in yourself that you are able to handle it. Am I going to be good enough? Will I be found out? And I think as you get older, you make it about them, not about you. I find what works for me is, is to get the right mindset. It's about them, the energy going outward and forward with the focus on them, on what I can bring to them. Prepare meticulously. Outstanding Actor So I think the preparation is important and the mindset. You know, you can coach yourself a lot these days just by trying things out on your laptop, on your phone, recording, and playing it back. Start to experiment with things. Be very specific in your choices. Using contrary action as an actor. And it helps get that kind of volcano principle, you know, just the rumbling underneath the volcano before it erupts. Before it explodes, which creates, as you mentioned before, a sense of danger. Danger, I tend to think of that as you set up a tension between yourself, the actor, and the audience, thinking, "Oh, wow, where's she going with this? What's going to happen next?" Because audiences love to be thrilled and surprised, don't they? We lose that sense of playfulness that is the source of our charm, our creativity, and our imagination in adult life. And so a lot of the journey of the actor is to go back the wheel turns full circle back to that, to find at the adult age. I think that it's more fun to play the game if you know that you are capable and can handle whatever circumstance comes your way in life. Knowing you are capable, I think, is such an important part of being a good actor because you need to feel safe. So a good question to ask yourself then is okay, if there is fear, what is the source of the fear? Ken's New Exercise Ken's Secret Weapon Exercise And I think a lot is about paring away the clutter. I use that phrase a lot, you know, just to find a simplicity and an energy that comes from a calm center but is fully concentrated. As the actor, you play with the other actor, but you're also playing with the audience and have to make sure they're enjoying being there.

Married couple Julianne and Jonathan are not only excellent actors, but also excellent company. She won an Emmy for her extraordinary performance in Mare Of Easttown, while he has recently launched a podcast called Stage Door Jonny in which he speaks to the likes of Damian Lewis, Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke and Sarah Jessica Parker about their lives in theatre. They ordered a beautiful box of bites from Little Fish: Sushi In The Sticks, who very kindly opened especially for us on their one day off. Shout out to Neil and Neil for doing that! Blimey, folks, this week's episode of the Empire Podcast has more guests than Jamie Lee Curtis' home on Christmas Day. (Because she's married to Christopher Guest, you see, and presumably there would be a large number of extended family members invited around for a slap-up meal.) Helen O'Hara has a lovely chat with White Noise star Greta Gerwig about casting herself, her desire to make a musical, and more. Then Chris Hewitt has a lovely natter with action movie ace Frank Grillo, who's spreading his wings as the star of Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend. And, in the studio this week, Chris and Helen are joined by the brilliant Damian Lewis and Nick Murphy, star and director respectively of the ITVX drama, A Spy Among Friends (take that, Pilot TV). Lewis and Murphy (no, they're not a RoboCop tribute act) occupy the third and fourth chairs with remarkable grace, fielding questions about spies, breakfasts and buttocks, while tackling this week's listener question, about the best time jumps in movies and TV. Then, Chris and Helen are joined by Amon Warmann to discuss the week's movie news (including all those big trailers), review Violent Night and White Noise, and bang on about Cocaine Bear. Oh, and Amon has his mind blown by Frank Grillo. Enjoy.
