Episode 543 - Doug's Been Waiting 10 Years to Show His Daughter The Dark Knight. It Finally Happened.

It's one of the greatest films ever made. Doug has seen it more times than he can count. And for years, he's been waiting for the moment his daughter was ready. This Father's Day weekend, it happened, but not before they worked their way through Batman Begins first. The Batman Begins debrief alone is worth the price of admission: Natalie still doesn't understand why Bruce Wayne's parents had to die and genuinely wondered whether Batman was going to kill Rachel and Alfred in the film. She also thought that Batman can, apparently, talk to bats. Then came The Dark Knight. Doug prepped her on the Joker's philosophy, the importance of Batman's no-kill rule, and the practical effects behind the hospital explosion, which Doug and Jill actually witnessed being filmed when they lived downtown Chicago. Natalie handled the pencil scene with more composure than expected. She processed the ferry sequence. She understood the stakes, and spent the entire climax waiting for Bane to show up. And when it was over, she looked at her dad and said: "I see why you like it." Ten years. Worth every second. Also this episode: a genuinely great question — if you could go back to high school or college and take one class again with everything you know now, which class would you choose? Justin picks social studies, psychology, astronomy, and a very specific European history class he completely wasted. Doug picks management 101 with a professor he truly despised and would absolutely challenge every single day, and seventh grade PE, where his coach regularly called him names that would end careers today. Plot twist: years later, that same coach applied for a job at Doug's brother's school. Doug's brother said no. Justice is real. Plus: a dump truck parked in front of a blind hill with "Trust in the Lord" written on the back, Jesus as a Marvel Rivals support player, and Meccha Chameleon — a $6 Steam prop hunt game where you paint yourself to blend into the scenery and it is immediately one of the best six dollars Doug has ever spent. Justin needs a PC. Doug has thoughts. The movie audio clip guessing game returns with quotes from Wall Street, The Big Short, and The Golden Child including one of the most specific movie pulls in the history of this show. D-Day is one of the most studied military operations in history. But what if the fate of the Allied invasion hinged not on generals, tanks, or landing craft—but on a weather forecast? In this episode of Reckoning with Jason Herbert, Jason is joined by historians Todd Arrington and Dr. Colin Colbourn to discuss the new film Pressure, starring Brendan Fraser as General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Andrew Scott as meteorologist James Stagg. Together they explore the extraordinary decisions made in the days before June 6, 1944, when uncertain forecasts, competing personalities, and the weight of history converged on a single choice: whether to launch Operation Overlord. The conversation examines Eisenhower's leadership under immense strain, the often-overlooked role of meteorology in World War II, the disastrous rehearsal known as Exercise Tiger, and the complex relationships among Allied commanders such as Bernard Montgomery. Along the way, the panel weighs in on the film's historical accuracy, its performances, and why Pressure succeeds by telling a familiar story from an entirely unexpected angle. If you've ever wondered how close D-Day came to being postponed—or how something as unpredictable as the weather helped shape the course of the twentieth century—this is an episode you won't want to miss.Topics discussed: The true story behind the film Pressure Dwight Eisenhower and the burden of command  James Stagg and the weather forecast that changed history  Exercise Tiger and the hidden costs of preparing for D-Day  Bernard Montgomery, Allied politics, and coalition warfare  The role of weather in World War II operations  Historical accuracy versus cinematic storytelling  Brendan Fraser, Andrew Scott, and Damian Lewis on screen

The boys are back for part two of the Born to Watch fourth birthday celebration, and this week's feature is Quentin Tarantino's love letter to a vanished era, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Review. Set against the backdrop of 1969 Los Angeles, this is Tarantino at his most nostalgic, most personal, and possibly most indulgent, but when it looks this good and feels this immersive, who cares?Whitey, Damo and G-Man dive deep into the neon-soaked streets of old Hollywood, where television cowboys still mattered, stuntmen drank beer on rooftops, and everyone smoked enough cigarettes to shorten their lifespan by 20 years. From Rick Dalton's crumbling confidence to Cliff Booth's effortless cool, the crew break down why this film becomes richer with every rewatch. The boys discuss how the movie completely subverts expectations, especially if you walk in expecting a full Charles Manson story. Instead, Tarantino delivers something far more emotional and reflective, a fairy tale about fading relevance, friendship, loneliness and the death of an era. Whitey explains how his first viewing left him confused, but his second cinema trip completely changed the way he saw the film, shifting focus away from the Manson backdrop and onto Rick Dalton's fear that Hollywood has passed him by.There's plenty of love for Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Rick Dalton, with Damo calling it one of the actor's best ever performances. The boys unpack how brilliantly DiCaprio balances insecurity, desperation, and ego, especially in scenes where Rick spirals after forgetting his lines or fearing he's become yesterday's news. Brad Pitt's Oscar-winning turn as Cliff Booth also gets the praise it deserves, with the crew debating whether Cliff might actually be one of Tarantino's coolest characters ever.Naturally, the conversation turns toward the ridiculous depth of the cast. From Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate to Al Pacino, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Bruce Dern and Australian actor Damon Herriman as Charles Manson, this movie is stacked from top to bottom. The boys even debate whether this is Tarantino's deepest cast ever assembled. And because this is Born to Watch, things quickly descend into absolute chaos. There are discussions about Playboy Mansion parties, giant murals of yourself in your garage, Strangles learning what a queef is, and whether anyone alive could realistically resist picking up Margaret Qualley and Sydney Sweeney hitchhiking on the side of the road in 1969 Hollywood. The episode also covers:Tarantino's recreation of 1969 Los AngelesThe unbelievable soundtrack and radio advertisementsWhy the movie feels like it was made in the late '60sThe brilliance of the Spahn Ranch sequenceThe film's Oscar success and controversial lossesWhy the ending works so perfectlyBrad Pitt's effortless charismaMargot Robbie is somehow becoming even more beautiful in every sceneThe insane amount of smoking throughout the filmWhy Tarantino's "fantasy history" trilogy keeps workingThere's also another loaded Snorbs Report Special, some underrated 2019 movie recommendations, and more random nonsense than should legally fit into one podcast episode.Whether you're a lifelong Tarantino obsessive or someone who only recently discovered Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, this episode celebrates everything that makes the film unforgettable: the atmosphere, the performances, the music, the humour, and the strange, bittersweet feeling that Hollywood itself was changing forever. So if you love movie deep dives, behind-the-scenes trivia, outrageous tangents, and three Aussie blokes talking absolute rubbish while somehow stumbling into genuine film analysis, this is the episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION

"Fackham Hall" is a period parody comedy film set in 1930s England that crosses "Downton Abbey" with "Airplane!" and "Monty Python." It is directed by Jim O'Hanlon and written by comedian Jimmy Carr (in his screenwriting feature debut) with Patrick Carr and The Dawson Brothers. It stars Damian Lewis, Thomasin McKenzie, Ben Radcliffe, Katherine Waterston, Tom Felton, and Jimmy Carr. It follows loveable pick-pocket Eric Noone (Radcliffe) as he lands a job at a unique English manor house. He quickly rises through the ranks, and a forbidden romance with the lady of the house, Rose Davenport (McKenzie), blossoms. But when an unexpected murder occurs, Eric gets framed - leaving Rose and her family's future perilously uncertain. There's refined British comedy, and then there's “Fackham Hall,” a movie that waltzes in wearing period-accurate garb on the outside and immediately trips over the furniture. It's the kind of delightfully silly romp where aristocrats brood, servants scramble, romance simmers, relatives wed, and the background is working twice as hard as the actors to steal every scene, like “Downton Abbey” politely offering you tea while “Airplane” swaps the sugar for gunpowder. Set between the wars, the film follows starry-eyed servant Eric and rebellious aristocrat Rose as their forbidden attraction detonates inside a household already teetering on the edge of absurdity. The ensemble includes Thomasin McKenzie, Damian Lewis, Katherine Waterston, Tom Felton, and a sprawling cast of blissfully serious performers.Joining The Discourse in today's episode are “Fackham Hall” director Jim O'Hanlon and star Thomasin McKenzie, who break down how the team crafted a period comedy where the jokes never stop multiplying and the sincerity has to be played with absolute conviction.

Happy Halloween, listeners! It's the most wonderful day of the year, if you're a spook, spectre, or masked maniac. And to mark All Hallow's Eve, here's a treat (not a trick), as we've put together a terrifying double bill of interviews for you. Well, the interviews are fun, although you might find some of Chris Hewitt's questions terrifying as he sits down with Damian Lewis, star of The Radleys, to talk about playing not one but two vampires, and Brian Netto & Adam Schindler, directors of Don't Move. But that's not all — Netto and Schindler are joined by their producer, one Sam Raimi. And if you've listened to the Empire Podcast before, you'll know that that's a pretty big deal for our Chris. Both interviews are tons of fun, and at one point Chris gets super-nerdy about Evil Dead II with Raimi, which is groovy. And after you've listened to this, why not give The Radleys (on Sky Cinema now) and Don't Move (on Netflix) a whirl? Enjoy.

Damian Lewis grew up in North London and, after a spell in boarding school, returned to the city to study acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Two very different directors talk about two very different films on this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. First-up, Kevin Smith talks about his 1980s set comedy, The 4:30 Movie and then later in the episode Euros Lyn discusses his vampire-comedy, The Radleys. Kevin Smith was one of the leading figures in the 1990s independent film scene. His self-financed low-budget comedy Clerks was a massive success and he went on to make the likes of Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and others. Working with rep company that includes the likes of Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes and Matt Damon, Smith's films have also had a strong autobiographical bent, incorporating moments and characters from his own life and adding his own style of acerbic wit. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie is his most autobiographical yet- a 1980s set coming of age story that not only takes place within the confines of Smith's home state of New Jersey - but also his very own SmodCastle cinema. It's a witty and heartfelt film that delivers the goods for fans of his work and those looking for a well-honed comedy. Kevin Smith talks about digging into his past to make the film, shooting in your own cinema - as well as the possibility of a Mallrats sequel. To say that Welsh director Euros Lyn has had an illustrious career would be an understatement. His career as a director is littered with some of the television's top shows including - Casualty, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Daredevil, His Dark Materials and Heartstopper. Lyn's new film, The Radleys is based on Matt Haig's book of the same name - and it stars Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as a married couple with a young family - and they all just happen to be vampires. Euros Lyn's chat about The Radleys covers bringing the material to the screen and getting such a great cast for his vampire film.

So many layers today...Hours before he was due to appear at the 10th anniversary service of thanksgiving at St Paul's, Harry was spotted leaving an event. Harry waved and said "hello" to onlookers. Holding a black folder under his arm, Harry was asked if he was "happy to be home", to which he simply chuckled and dodged the question by saying: "Nice to see you."We'll take that as no.Royal expert Charlotte Griffiths She claimed Harry made "certain demands" about who could be in the room for a meeting with the King, and who couldn't.  One wonders if the couldn't includes Camilla, the wicked stepmother.Royal expert Rupert Bell suggested to TalkTV "Maybe the King just feels like he's not ready, emotionally, as well as anything else, to have even 30 minutes with his son."Thirty minutes isn't really enough time to get beyond the small talk stage. What they really needs is some honest-to-goodness father and son time."On Wednesday, Prince Harry made a poignant entrance into St. Paul's Cathedral, adorned with four medals proudly displayed on his blazer, accompanied by another around his neck. His attire spoke volumes about his dedicated service and commitment to various causes. The medals adorning his blazer included the Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, each symbolizing different milestones and achievements in his service to the nation.Around his neck, he wore a star, a distinguished emblem signifying his status as the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO), further highlighting his esteemed position within the royal hierarchy. However, amidst the solemnity of the occasion, Prince Harry appeared to stand alone, without any other members of the royal family by his side. While he attended the Invictus Games service at St. Paul's Cathedral, his absence was notable at Buckingham Palace, where the King hosted the inaugural annual garden party, joined by other senior royals. As he entered St. Paul's Cathedral, Prince Harry greeted the crowd with a warm smile and a wave, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and resilience that defines the Invictus Games. His presence at the event, where he was slated to deliver a reading alongside actor Damian Lewis, served as a poignant reminder of his ongoing commitment to serving those who have sacrificed for their country.Harry received a warm welcome from the Dean, the Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, as he was escorted to his seat beneath the cathedral's majestic dome.Taking his place beside his mentor, Mark Dyer, Prince Harry engaged in a brief exchange with his uncle, Earl Spencer.Acknowledging the stark realities of conflict and its aftermath, the Dean lamented, "We lament the pain, cost, and indignity of war and terror, and pray for a world where justice shall reign and where the nations will find their longed-for unity.""We recall, with admiration, the skill and determination of those who seek to repair, rehabilitate, and reclaim the lives of those living with serious illness or injury: changing and saving lives."..Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News "Mike Tindall, who is the husband of Zara, the King's niece, has been given a high position to do something about the Invictus Games."I think Harry is absolutely furious about this. It has been announced, but very quietly." The Royal Family presented a united front in support of King Charles at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the summer season. His Majesty was joined by Queen Camilla, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester for the event.Charles, dressed in a distinguished grey suit paired with a light blue waistcoat, greeted the gathered crowds with a smile as he entered the garden alongside the Queen.Buckingham Palace announced Prince William and his father would be sharing a joint engagement in the upcoming week. William will be bestowed with the distinguished title of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps.Prior to Prince Harry's decision to step back from royal responsibilities four years ago, it was widely speculated that he would assume this prestigious role, considering his deep connection with the regiment he had bravely served alongside during his time in Afghanistan until 2014.The timing of the announcement, however, raised eyebrows among royal observers. "Timing is everything," remarked one insider. Another insider noted that the King's choice to pass on this cherished role to his eldest son, coupled with the apparent lack of a meeting with Prince Harry, is likely to be interpreted as a deliberate messageRoyal Insider Deep Crown tells us, “"The timing of Prince William's appointment as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps is no accident."  And as for the King being busy, Deep Crown quipped,  remarks Deep Crown, a seasoned royal insider. "Even I could secure 15 minutes with the King this week, if His Majesty had wanted to make time for me."

We're revisiting the big budget adaptation of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher at long last! Not only is the film celebrating its 20th anniversary, it's also a movie Dan's been wanting to cover since he started reading the book 5 years ago when we started this podcast! He's finally finished it, despite a canine mishap midway through, so here we are... And what a spectacle it is. An isolated snowy landscape, an alien invasion, possession, red fungal infections, a group of friends with psychic powers... there's a lot going on in this one! And the pedigree of the artists behind it is astonishing: Lawrence Kasdan, the writer of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back, directs and co-scripts with Misery adapter and The Princess Bride scribe William Goldman, with a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Damian Lewis, Jason Lee, Timothy Olyphant, Thomas Jane, Tom Sizemore and Donnie Wahlberg. In honor of July 4, we re-release an episode of Rog's HBO "Band of Brothers" Podcast with Damian Lewis. The Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning actor – whose portrayal of Major Dick Winters is the centrifugal force of Band of Brothers – reflects on why a classically-trained, well-heeled Englishman was cast as a salt-of-the-earth American war hero, and why two decades later, Band of Brothers remains more than just a job. Listen down the entire Band of Brothers Podcast on all major Pod platforms. And rewatch the series on MAX.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
