Today's episode is the second of my so-called “Bubbles on the Nile” series, performances by Beverly Sills (and a host of other divas) in unexpected roles. While the first episode drew on the contents of a 1985 release on the Legendary Recordings label with the same title, today's episode focuses exclusively on the music of George Frideric Handel with an entirely Gundlach-generated setlist. Sills is featured not as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, the role that made her a star, but in two other Handel roles which she only rarely performed: Ginevra in Ariodante, and the title role in Semele. There follow nearly two dozen additional singers singing unexpected Handel roles, beginning with Alma Gluck all the way back in 1916. Other singers include Claudia Muzio, Elisabeth Rethberg, Lotte Lehmann, Florence Quartararo, Teresa Żylis-Gara, Hanne-Lore Kuhse, Christa Ludwig, Ileana Cotrubaș, Christiane Eda-Pierre, Shirley Verrett, Martina Arroyo, Grace Bumbry, Victoria de los Ángeles, and Reri Grist. There is a special section featuring six unexpected performers of the role of Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare: Renata Tebaldi, Leontyne Price, Montserrat Caballé, Renata Scotto, Onelia Fineschi, and Virginia Zeani. Other Handel works represented include Rinaldo, Hercules, Alcina, Atalanta, Amadigi, Judas Maccabaeus, and Radamisto. Hearing these singers take a determinedly “old school” approach to Handel's music is fascinating, diverting, challenging, sometimes amusing, and always revelatory. Growing up in a small town in West Tennessee surrounded by cotton fields and limited horizons, he couldn't imagine that the places he saw on Discovery Channel would one day become his workplace. Rounding out our trilogy of special episodes on Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, we are joined by gladiator expert, Alexandra Sills.Alexandra holds a BA in Classical Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London and a MA in The Classical Mediterranean from the University of Leicester. Alexandra's MA dissertation was awarded the Mark Pluciennik prize in Archaeology & Ancient History. Alexandra has published outreach articles for Bad Ancient and Working Classicists and recently published an academic article entitled ‘The Tropification of Hollywood Heroes Thrown Into the Arena' for Melita Classica in 2023. Dr. Scott Sills was a fertility doctor that dedicated his life to help women have children and offer them treatments to aid in the process. He was passionate about his work and even wrote successful medical papers and appeared on the show “The Dr.s” for his incredible research into fertility. Scott shared his life with his beautiful wife Susan and their 2 children and together the family was a picture perfect happy family. Susan herself was a successful business woman and worked hard to help others get their small businesses off the ground. But in November 2016, police would show up to the family home to find Susan dead at the bottom of the steps with a strangulation mark around her neck. Scotts explanation of what happened? The dogs had tied a scarf around her neck, strangled her, then killed her. The police weren't buying it and it wasn't until they went into the daughters bedroom, where they would uncover the bloody scene of what actually happened to Susan Sills.
