This week's first segment is brought to you by editors Don Williams and Nic de Sena. Don recently returned from Spain where he rode the new 2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen 801. Performance comes in many forms, and certainly the Svartpilen has a unique take on things while delivering amazing speed. It's a premium motorcycle with lots of high-end features and a unique, almost steampunk look to it that makes it a real standout. It's fast and user-friendly, and if doing things a little differently appeals to you, then Don's take on the new Husqvarna will be of interest. Motos and Friends is brought to you by Arai helmets. Arai is obsessed with every detail—even those unseen. There is such a thing as “The Arai Difference”.   For instance, if your experience has been that helmets are hard to get on, then try the Arai Contour-X, designed with a wider bottom opening for easier on/off.  Once on, you will be impressed at the amazing comfort of the Contour-X, especially if you're into long-distance touring. If you're into Dual-Sport, then you'll want to check out the new Arai XD-5. It's a completely redesigned helmet, and as with everything from Arai, every improvement is made with a priority for protection. One of the major changes is the new VAS-A visor system, derived from the one originally developed for the Corsair-X. The new visor is designed to maximize surface area to glance off impact energy whilst at the same time offering easy installation and removal of the visor and peak. So get to your local dealer and try out the full range of Arai helmets. You will be instantly amazed at the fit and all-day comfort of any Arai helmet. You should also check out AraiAmericas.com to learn more. If you've ever found yourself away from home and pining for a motorcycle ride, then Twisted Road might be the answer. In this second segment, Teejay Adams chats with Austin Rothbard, creator of the App that he describes as “the Airbnb of motorcycling”. Although your first take might be skepticism that anyone would want to rent out their precious motorcycle, it turns out that there are plenty of people not only willing to do so, but who are doing it regularly. The App has been around since 2017 and so it's an idea that seems to be well evolved. Interesting! We love your feedback! Would you let a complete stranger ride your prized motorcycle? Austin Rothbard is betting that you will—for a fee, of course. In fact, Rothbard started a business in 2017 based on that very concept. Rothbard is a motorcyclist himself and the founder and CEO of “Twisted Road,” a peer-to-peer, community-based rental service that he fondly refers to as the “Airbnb of motorcycles.”Twisted Road builds relationships with motorcycle owners who care about their machines. They keep their bikes clean and shiny. Proper maintenance is a priority. They can spout tire pressures—cold or hot?—quicker than their spouses' birthdates. And they expect the same from customers. One of the rental stipulations, for example, is that every motorcycle is returned with a full tank of gas.Find a motorcycle, book your days, and enjoy the ride of your life. According to Rothbard, the Twisted Road experience is that easy. Aiming to “unlock the motorcycles of the world so more people can experience life on two wheels,” the New Jersey native who now calls Chicago home truly embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. For all the craziness going on in the world, at least our saving grace is our love of motorcycles. Much of that love is shared through Twisted Road. Twisted Road is affectionately known as the "AirBnB of motorcycles". In our first Reserve Tank episode of the new year, let's talk a bit about how, and why, Twisted Road created this online peer-to-peer rental system. There were two problems Twisted Road aimed to solve: the need to have a bike to ride and the waste of a bike sitting in your garage unused. The vision was clear -- Ride the World. Austin needed motorcycles everywhere. Pasadena. St. George. Monterrey. Tail of the Dragon. Miami. Pisa. Singapore. The Stelvio Pass. Wherever riders want to ride (again, everywhere). People wanted to both rent bikes and list theirs. Then the name: Twisted Road. It's leaning into a turn. Making your own path. Exploring. The journey. And the ride. It's about not knowing what's around the bend, but being able to enjoy the moment of wheel on earth. Be sure to make it to the end of the episode to join us for a new segment of the Reserve Tank rapid-fire "This or That". Let's be real, we all have our preferences about motorcycling. We can all be an opinionated bunch, but we all love motorcycle culture and riding. We're asking the hard questions. The rules are simple: we give our guests questions with only two answers to choose from and we will likely judge you for your decisions. The fate of Twisted Road lies in the balance... Thanks for listening and a special thank you to Austin for joining us on this very important episode! Be sure to check out https://www.twistedroad.com/ (TwistedRoad.com)

Elizabeth McCulloch was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lived in New England, the Midwest, Canada, and the South, before putting down roots in Gainesville, Florida, almost forty years ago. Previously a lawyer, then a teacher, she has had children of various stripes: one born, two foster, one step, and the granddaughter she is now raising with her husband. Elizabeth has always loved to read and always wanted to write. She began seriously pursuing her dream over 30 years ago, with pauses in the pursuit for various events and catastrophes. She has completed three novels and is working on a fourth. At her blog, The Feminist Grandma, she writes illustrated personal essays about family, friends, aging, social justice issues, and whatever takes her fancy. At Big Books from Small Presses, she posts illustrated reviews and other essays about books. Both blogs are at her website, elizabethmccullochauthor.com. When Elizabeth isn’t reading or writing, she sings at a nursing home, swims, gardens, dances, cooks, and has mastered baking pie crusts. In Dreaming the Marsh (Twisted Road, 2019), a giant sinkhole begins swallowing an enormous swath of a marsh-like ecosystem that has been slated for development, along with parts of a highway and a large lake. The citizens of Opakulla, Florida struggle to understand what is happening as the land is sucked under. They’re also perplexed by un-erasable writing that appears on their new town hall. The sinkhole starts wreaking havoc with their lives and nobody knows what to do about it. A lovesick geologist wants to study it, the real estate developers relish its wild beauty, the mayor and members of the town commission want something done to stop it, and the owner of a local café, who speaks with the Ancients, understands it. But she isn’t telling. As host for New Books in Fiction, a podcast channel on the New Books Network, I interview authors of beautifully written literary fiction. I also adore well-written mysteries. I try to focus on independently published novels, especially by women and others whose voices need more attention. Due to the high number of books currently on my list, I do not consider self-published books. Austin Rothbard of Twisted Road - What's NEW? Dealer rental system - Episode 62

Dealership fiXit

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 12, 2020 41:20

Welcome back! Tonight I caught up with Austin Rothbard, CEO of Twisted Road to see what he up to, after a year has passed since last episode he was on. Why would normal powersports dealerships be interested in understanding motorcycle "sharing" when they want to sell more motorcycles? I think they should learn about it as, like most other tools available to you - they are also available to your competitors. This is why I asked Austin to speak with me about what he is doing, so powersports dealerships can understand how the landscape is changing and the options of an UBER-esque population begin to hit where we live. Know the change so you can be decisive in how you deal with that change. That's my opinion anyway. Austin Rothbard is Founder and CEO at Twisted Road, a motorcycle sharing community that empowers riders (possibly future owners) to try different motorcycles where they live or while traveling elsewhere in the US. Like an AirBnB in homes or TURO in automobiles, TwistedRoad.com allows rental of others bikes or you can be the owner who lets others use your motorcycle when you aren't. A potentially nice financial offset to your ownership cost when you were going to have it sitting still anyway... Check them out here: https://www.twistedroad.com/ Austin admits that not everyone wants someone else to ride their motorcycle - and he says that's ok! He says the majority of people he has surveyed would like to rent someone else's motorcycle while the minority of people are initially interested in letting some "stranger" ride theirs. Sounds like sound logic to me. LOL. We are all likely to fear an unknown like this... I know I did. Listeners to this podcast are likely to have in the past or do currently work in a powersports dealership, so the idea of getting (or letting) a potential buyer pay to try a motorcycle rather than just become an owner may have you feeling skeptical at first. Trust me, I am not an investor in his company and he has not paid me anything to speak on his behalf but I can tell you I see some reasons to be optimistic about this business model in relation to dealership business. NEW DEALER DEMO framework. Could dealers who shy away from doing motorcycle test rides be more confident in letting consumers demo their bikes? I'm talking a day or two day, get-to-know the bike. Do you think a consumer/renter would fall in love with a bike if given a bit more time to romance it? I think they might.  Austin and Twisted Road seem to have a framework that may let a dealership put units or some into rental listing, get paid for the "demo" while being covered by their insurance and then offer up an offsetting amount of the rental incurred, if the renter buys the bike. Sounds like a less commitment/more attractive rent to own program. A customer would start to have some skin in the game that way. And as he mentioned, the owner gets to determine if the renter is actually qualified to be on that bike, baed on their riding experience. Parts and Accessory sales.  According to Austin, a renter would already be licensed and insured or they wouldn't be able to rent from Twisted Road. If the owner (a dealer) chooses, they could have a certain availability of gear or they could obviously just be there to sell the renter gear, if needed. Could be an opportunity at a bit of a captive audience in front of your well stocked accessory walls. If the shift to sharing model becomes more reality as some studies say it will be - are you, as a selling dealer prepared to stay in play with that consumer? It's my belief that the vast majority of the dealers I have worked with in my 20 years in powersports, nationwide, may not be.  Contact Austin at: austin@twistedroad.com  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dealershipfixit/message

Episode 233: Austin Rothbard of peer-to-peer motorcycle rental outfit, Twisted Road, comes back to catch up with us and let us know how things are going with TR and the improvements they've made as a company. Chuck shares how he did not immediately crash the bike he rented while out in Long Beach. Definitely check out the blog section of the website for cool guides and articles written by the company and community members and not just journal entries about Austin's impressive and quite comprehensive collection of tea cozies. (there's a secret link on the blog page to that, but you'll have to email them for how to access it!) Wheelnerds stickers and keytags for sale! Check them out here!   Permanent Links: Wheelnerd's Handy Inspection Checklist Joe Popp (musician) (He recorded the Dicks Dicks Dicks theme used in the beginning). RedPillJunkie (artist) Want to hear yourself on our show? Ridden a bike (like your own) and got an opinion? Got a cool piece of gear or farkle? Got a story? Know some jokes? Record an MP3 (or whatever) and email it to us at wheelnerds@gmail.com. We'll throw it on the air and talk about it, too. That's right, you can be the first on your block to be openly mocked by the Wheelnerds. Or call our voicemail: (801) 305-4677 Or, leave us a voicemail via Skype! Our skype ID is wheelnerds. Just go ahead, call, and leave us your story there! (We still read your emails, too, and will answer them on the show). If you got something really cool, shoot us a line and maybe we'll talk to you live, too.
