Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:      Melissa: I am 43, 160lbs 5ft. 6 good amount of muscle. I eat completely clean as in grassfed fed, organic turkey, organic chicken occasionally brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus and arugula, pickles, saurkraut and kimchi and I only drink water. I do eat a good amount of protein 140ish grams a day. I just got bloodworm and my A1C was 5.6. All other markers were great just that one was high for me not dr. ...why when I don't eat sugar of any sorts! Just recently as in last few weeks started introducing some fruit back in such as apples, blueberries and strawberries but still so confused can you explain?                                                                                                                                                                                               Kelly: Hi Dr. Cabral, I just completed a 7 day detox, love it. Today I started the Heavy Metal detox. Really excited about detoxing my body from toxic metals. I have high Aluminum and mercury and mineral ratios are off. Anyway, Thank you for your protocols. I'm in menopause and suffering from a couple of symptoms. No libido, no sleep, irritable, brain fog, dryness, I'm not the person i used to be in terms of happiness. I used to be happy for no reason, but since menopause I changed. I'm 51. Do you offer help for those symptoms? I want to be a lovely wife as i used to be. At this point I'm even considering taking Bio Identical hormones. Thank you in advance.                                                                                                    Drew: For almost 2 years I have had a pain behind my right eye. It started as a flare up after cutting grass one day. Most of the pain comes in the morning right before I get out of bed. It is a dull ache and sometimes leaves my eye crusty. I have seen two different eye doctors, my PCP, an ear nose and throat doctor, and a neuro ophthalmologist all of which can find nothing wrong. I have had a CT scan as well as an MRI which revealed nothing. Hoping you could shed some light on next steps that I need to take or where I need to look. Thank you so much for all that you do.     AA: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am hoping that you might have some insight. In Oct. I got extremely sick ( maybe covid) with horrible respiratory issues high fever etc. every month since my period has been 3 weeks late and as of one month I cannot eat without pain. The worst symptom is no sleep because of abdominal cramping and severe full body chills ( tingling) the tingling happens all day but is more apparent after ingesting food. I have taken stool tests/blood tests which seemed normal except for low b12 (300/ml) and went for a colonoscopy ( which resulted in the doc. saying I had some inflammation at the bottom end of my colon and it could be ulcerative colitis but didn't say with certainty. ) I am at a loss its been three weeks without caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy and the symptoms persist.                                                                 Kay: Hello Dr. Cabral- I really appreciate your very informative podcasts! I am taking pregnenolone capsules at night recommended by my physician to help make some of the hormones that decline with age, and also to enhance cognitive function.. I have 2 questions: 1) Should I discontinue this prior to taking my at-home Equilife Stress, Mood and Metabolism test, and if so, by how many days? 2) Is taking this supplement going to make my body "lazy" and produce less of my natural pregnenolone? I've noticed that this helps me sleep better at night- I take this and a very low dose of naltrexone compounded by a compounding pharmacy. I am hoping that the SM&M test will give me clues to rebalancing my hormones naturally so I do not always need to rely on exogenous (and expensive) compounds. Zach was burned out after a decade of working at top roles in Coinbase, Square and Brex. He quit with no startup idea-- and then, he went right back in. Given their background, Zach and his co-founder quickly raised an $8M seed round to build an NFT-related product in Web3.One month later, they completely abandoned their idea. They realized it was never going to work. Then, the floor fell from underneath them. FTX went bankrupt. SVB fell apart. They took punches to the face for the first 6 months straight. But, when everyone was paying attention to Gen AI in late 2022, Zach kept going deep in Web3. He noticed stablecoins were growing but there was no platform for developers to build with. So he built Bridge, a Stripe-like API for stablecoins. The first months post-launch were underwhelming-- until they landed a fast-growing customer. From then on, the next year was exceptional 10x+ growth. Then Stripe noticed them.In Oct 2024, they were acquired for $1.1B. Just 2.5 years after he started. Here's the story of how it all happened. Why you should listen:Why even $1B+ exits still feel like rollercoasters from the inside. How to quickly abandon ideas and pivot to what truly matters. How they found a massive opportunity where no one else was looking. Why starting outside of the Bay Area was critical to their success.Keywordsstartup, billion-dollar exit, stablecoins, investor relations, crypto, fintech, market dynamics, entrepreneurship, pivot, challenges, stable coins, startup journey, acquisition, fintech, market resilience, product market fit, Pablo Srugo, Bridge, Stripe, entrepreneurshipTimestamps(00:00:00) Intro(00:2:46) Starting at the Worst Time(00:8:56) The Emotions on Pivoting a Month After Raising(00:11:44) Pivoting(00:18:24) Leaving Brex(00:20:36) Working on Something Out of Trend(00:28:34) The Core Beliefs of Bridge(00:32:56) Launching & First Customer(00:38:57) Sometimes you Can't Think Too Much(00:42:29) Series A(00:44:24) The Acquisition(00:49:05) The Feeling of Exiting for a Billion(00:52:24) One Piece of AdviceSend me a message to let me know what you think!

Next week is the election. Once again it is being billed as the "most important election in our lifetime!". And four years from now they will tell us the same thing. If every election is the same way, then maybe they are not as consequential as they say that they are.In Oct-27's homily/sermon, my pastor, Father Nikolai Meyers talked about the election (starts at 1:30:00, if it is not cued already). We are sold that there are only two sides to this. But Life has many sides. We got rain in NE Kansas after weeks and months of drought. The storm brought down trees. Neighbors helped each other to clear the downed trees. Maybe that is more consequential than the circus 2000 miles away in DC."If voting could actually upset the power of the establishment, you wouldn't be allowed to do it." - CyprianCyprian (aka Vin Armani) and I talk about the "Invisible Enemy" from an Orthodox Christian perspective. The Invisible EnemyFor totalitarianism to come into power you must have an Invisible Enemy. In 2020, Trump called Covid the "Invisible Enemy".Who is the Invisible Enemy today? For the Left, it is White Supremacy. It's the white guy with a rifle asking, "What kind of American are you?"For the Right, it's Trans people or "illegals".What about the homeless and the poor - are they the Invisible Enemy?Fear of the Invisible EnemyThe fear of the Invisible Enemy is fueled by social media, especially Twitter. You get more Likes and Views when you scare people with it.This pattern of declaring someone (or specific people or groups) as an Invisible Enemy and then declaring (social or real) war against it usually happens right before a big upheaval, and usually leads to some form of totalitarianism. Examples in the 20th Century are many: Germany, Russia, China. The Real Civil War is Within You. What are YOU going to do?Positive solutions to face your own personal Civil War:Pray. Pray for humility and discernment.Avoid the mind virus trap of thinking of groups of people as the Invisible Enemy. It never ends well.Give.We discuss: do you give to the homeless person if he will likely spend it on drugs? If you have an issue with this:How about asking his name? Greeting him with his name would be acknowledging him as human being. How about having a meaningful conversation?"The rich exist for the sake of the poor. The poor exist for the salvation of the rich.” - St. John Chrysostom.Read the daily Lives of the Saints. Their strength in trials and persecution will be a guide and model for you as you face the same. Because it is coming. (Didn't you learn anything from Covid?!)You may think you are winning. You don't think it will happen to you, but someone will be asking you, "What kind of American are you?" and you likely won't fit their definition.Episode website and show notes: https://thrivingthefuture.com/civil-war2If you like this unique topic, shoot us a tip on Venmo @ThrivingtheFuture or CashApp $ThrivingtheFuture. Allan claimed that Lisa had just up and left, however, police were not buying this, and they embarked on an elaborate undercover investigation. But nothing could prepare anyone for what they would find out. It turned out that Lisa had been much closer than anyone ever expected.  Sources:  Nancy Hixt, “The Disappearance of Lisa Mitchell|9", Crime Beat, Global News, Jan 13, 2020.    Meghan Grant, “Dead woman found in plastic bin inside homemade concrete tomb, murder trial hears”, CBC News, April 18, 2017, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/allan-shyback-lisa-mitchell-murder-trial-body-hidden-1.4073353, Accessed June 14, 2024.    Nancy Hixt, “The Disappearance of Lisa Mitchell”, Global News, May 8, 2020, https://globalnews.ca/news/6915682/lisa-mitchell-disappearance/, Accessed June 14, 2024.    “Lisa Michelle Mitchell's body kept in home for 2 years, police say”, CBC News, Dec 8, 2014, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/lisa-michelle-mitchell-s-body-kept-in-home-for-2-years-police-say-1.2863151, accessed June 14, 2024.    Bill Graveland, “Allan Shyback's version of killing wife untrue, Crown argues at trial”, CBC News, April 25, 2017, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/allan-shyback-lisa-mitchell-murder-trial-cross-exam-1.4085267, accessed June 14, 2024.    Ina Sidhu, “Parole reversed for Calgary killer”, CTV News, Oct 8, 2019, https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/parole-reversed-for-calgary-killer-1.4629915, accessed June 14, 2024.     Bill Graveland, “Day parole denied again for man who strangled wife, buried body in their Calgary home”, Global News, Aug 19, 2021, https://globalnews.ca/news/8126281/allan-shyback-lisa-mitchell-death-full-parole-denied-again/, accessed June 14, 2024.    Bill Graveland, “Crown wants up to 15 years for Calgary man who killed wife, then buried her in basement”, The Calgary Herald, Sept 20, 2017, https://calgaryherald.com/news/crime/sentencing-arguments-for-calgary-man-who-killed-wife-buried-body-in-basement, accessed June 14, 2024.     Dave Dormer, “Convicted killer Allan Shyback set to be released from prison”, CTV News, April 7, 2022, https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/convicted-killer-allan-shyback-set-to-be-released-from-prison-1.5852553, accessed June 14, 2024.    Bill Graveland, “‘My hands were around her neck:' trial hears Allan Shyback's alleged confession”, Global News, April 20, 2017, https://globalnews.ca/news/3393809/my-hands-were-around-her-neck-trial-hears-allan-shybacks-alleged-confession/, Accessed June 14, 2024.

The Institute of World Politics

About the Debate: In Nov 1945, the U.S. joined UNESCO, a new post-WWII organization designed to promote world peace and security. In Dec 1984, President Reagan took the U.S. out of UNESCO citing corruption and mismanagement. In Oct 2003, President George Bush rejoined UNESCO to advance human rights, tolerance, and learning. In Dec 2018, President Trump took the U.S.out of UNESCO citing anti-Israel bias, and the U.S.'s mounting arrears to UNESCO resulting from Palestine's election as a full member. In July 2023, President Biden rejoined UNESCO for the third time to combat increasing Chinese influence at the organization. Given the problematic relationship between the U.S. and UNESCO, and the organization's history of controversial initiatives, was this a wise decision? What are the pros and cons for the U.S. of being a member of UNESCO once again? About the Presenters: Gerald C. Anderson served as Director of Administration and Finance at the Pan American Health Organization in Washington, DC, from March 2014 to July 2021. Prior to joining PAHO, Mr. Anderson served from 2011-2014 as Secretary for Administration and Finance at the Organization of American States in Washington DC. Mr. Anderson served the United States Foreign Service from 1980 - 2010, completing his serviced as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Organizations. Mr. Anderson also served in Foreign Service posts in Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Seoul, Jerusalem, and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Anderson served in the United States Peace Corps in Benin, West Africa, and in the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mr. Anderson holds a Master of Arts degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Washington, DC, (1980) and a Bachelor of Arts from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois (1976). Stephen Engelken is a veteran of 38 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. Notably, he was Deputy Chief of the U.S. Mission to UNESCO in 2007-2010, serving as Charge' d'Affaires for seven months in this period. This was another name that I was familiar with, so it was pretty cool to meet the man in charge. This meeting was heavily themed around tracking results for some different keywords that the Thrivetime business coaching program was helping this client to rank for. Like the others, this meeting ended up with some performance tweaks to be made to the client's website that will nearly guarantee the client's business to show up higher for the keywords that he wants to show up for in Google. Between the meetings, we get a brief chance to discuss the prior meeting's action points and the “how's” and “why's” of how those apply to growing a business into the best version of itself. At this point, a couple in yellow shirts come in. They're from a company that has gone through a tremendous amount of growth since starting to work with Clay and the crew: Tip Top K9. Clay offered to let me bounce a few questions off of them after the meeting. Once they finished up, Tip Top K9 founder Ryan Wimpey came over to where I was waiting so I recorded a few questions that I asked him. I'm going to transcribe this conversation to text, so I'll keep it fairly abbreviated for the sake of our collective sanities. Tyler (Just Tulsa): So, the first time I had ever heard of Tip Top K9 was back around September in one of the Thrivetime business conferences. How long have you all been working with the Thrivetime business coaching program? Ryan Wimpey of TipTopK9.com Dog Training: We've been working with them for 14 months or so now… Just a little bit over a year. Tyler: And how did you all get hooked up with them? Ryan Wimpey of TipTopK9.com Dog Training: It's definitely gotten a lot better. We've got a lot of systems and marketing in place now. I don't even worry about marketing anymore. Tyler: So, does Thrivetime business coaching program handle that or do they just kind of get you all set up and let you all handle it from there? Ryan Wimpey of TipTopK9.com Dog Training: Nope — they handle all of our marketing. Tyler: Really? Ryan Wimpey of TipTopK9.com Dog Training: Yeah. (Note: this “three-legged marketing stool refers to an approach that Clay and Dr. Zoellner teach to make sure the high quality leads come in and sustainably keep doing so.) Ryan Wimpey of TipTopK9.com Dog Training: Ours consists of our “Dream 100”, search engine optimization, and AdWords. So, she was able to work on the management systems and call center stuff, and I was able to train the trainers and come up with systems for private lessons and everything else. We were really able to pull back on our involvement because we were able to systemize everything. We don't have to worry about our marketing or our website. Winona LaDuke recalls “Salsa Tuesdays” outside the old Carnegie Library in Park Rapids. In 2021, water protector activists and members of the community would dance — salsa, macarena — in protest against Enbridge, the building's then occupant, the Canadian conglomerate behind the controversial Line 3 pipeline.“We would stand out there with little signs that said, ‘Water is life, protect the water, stop Line 3,'” LaDuke says. “We would always look at the building and hope that one day something would be different there.”On Thursday, Giiwedinong: The Anishinaabe Museum of Treaties and Culture opened on the spot. The museum sits just off the main drag of a downtown lined with candy shops, bars and an old cinema. Now, the stone building, built in 1908, is striped with red, white, yellow and black, the medicine wheel colors representing the four directions. It is the first museum in Minnesota devoted to the Indigenous perspective on treaty rights, environmental justice and culture.“This is not a tribal museum,” explains LaDuke, a member of the Mississippi Band of Ashinaabeg. “This is an Indigenous museum, but it is off the reservation. It received no state funding, it's entirely independent. We think of ourselves as the little museum that could.”In Oct. 2022, the building was purchased for the museum by Akiing, an Anishinaabe community nonprofit based on the nearby White Earth Indian Reservation.  “It's being put in a place that's so ironic,” says Frank Bibeau, a museum board member and the Akiing executive director.Bibeau is an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe at White Earth and a treaty rights attorney. Park Rapids is in the heart of ceded treaty territory, explains Bibeau. Enbridge placed the Line 3 pipeline across Northern Minnesota despite public opposition. Water protector activists, including Native and climate advocates, warned it could pollute waterways. With the museum, Bibeau says they are correcting the actions of the building's past occupants, Carnegie and Enbridge. Related Winona LaDuke resigns as Honor The Earth leader after sexual harassment case “So, the imperialist who took and raped our land and resources created that building in Park Rapids,” Bibeau says. “The next round of imperialists also were there, and so we're taking that space, and we're saying that's not the proper use of this space. That's been harmful to our area.”At the museum are interim executive director Jerry Lee Chilton, a member of the White Earth Band, and museum organizer Mary Crystal Goggleye, who is Anishinaabe and Pueblo. They stand in the entry, surrounded by a freshly painted mural. In jewel tones, Red Lake artist Brian Dow painted animals representing many Anishinaabe clans. “Giiwedinong” is Anishinaabe for “in the north,” says Chilton, who is also the executive director of the Anishinaabe Agricultural Institute.“It's a lot of cool artifacts, a lot of cool heritage,” Chilton says. He points to the ground and cites the 1855 Treaty. “This was all reservation at one point. So, we're just bringing that to light,” Chilton says. Goggleye walks among the maps and photographs.“We are fighting for our history to be told,” Goggleye says. “We are in society, you see us in society, and we will revitalize our own history.”The intimate galleries of Giiwedinong unfold with historical photos, treaty maps, and documents. Displays outline ceded territories defined by the Treaties of 1837, 1854, 1855 and 1867. They also show the rights to hunt, fish and gather in these territories, and tell the stories about how these rights have been breached. More displays depict agreements the Anishinaabe had with other indigenous nations, like One Dish One Spoon, the treaty about shared hunting rights that dates back to the 12th century.“It's a new concept, an important concept,” says museum board member Travis Zimmerman, a descendent of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Zimmerman is also the site manager for the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, which is run by the Minnesota Historical Society. Giiwedinong is different, he says.“A museum run by an American Indian organization, having American Indian curators, and really having that Native voice come out, is something that you don't really see much of, anywhere really, much less in Minnesota.”The museum is an educational resource for Native and non-Native folk alike, Zimmerman says.“The thing that's really behind treaties, it's all about sovereignty, and I think that's what people don't realize and struggle with, that American Indians are sovereign nations,” Zimmerman says. “We always have been, and we always will be.”Giiwedinong also puts these treaty rights into a contemporary context. A special exhibit features photos and stories from the Line 3 protests, and the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock. A photo on display by Sarah (Miskwaa-ens Migiziwigwan) Kalmanson includes water protector activist Tania Aubid at Standing Rock in North Dakota. In September, Aitkin County judge Leslie Metzen dismissed charges related to a Line 3 protest against Aubid, LaDuke and fellow activist Dawn Goodwin.Metzen reasoned, “We moved them by force and power and violence off the land where they lived for thousands of years. To make peace, we signed treaties with them that promised many things they never received.”Kalmanson, an Anishinaabekwe descendant of White Earth, photographed many of these protests. She is also a curator and marketing director for the museum.“We had tens of thousands of people at Standing Rock. I was there. And I want to honor that. There were a lot of atrocities that happened,” she says.Curating the museum has been healing, she says.“It was pretty brutal, what we all went through, and I just feel really energized and I'm so happy to share and carry this on,” Kalmanson says. “I'm really excited to have folks come in and see how beautiful we are.”LaDuke says there will be another dance party at the opening tonight.

I am delighted to welcome to the Podcast, Anne-Marie from The Grumpy Goat in Reading. The Grumpy Goat opened in the quirky Harris Arcade near Reading station in 2013, in a tiny unit, where swinging a cat would have been very hazardous to the brilliant stocks of bottles, cans and cheeses! In Oct 2020, during the darkest days of COVID, they took the opportunity to move into a much larger shop unit, in Union Street, just off Reading's main pedestrianised shopping street. The new unit enabled a much larger stock of beers, wines and spirits, and also a significant expansion of the Deli side of the business. Finally, and most exciting of all, in August 2022, the Goat Tap was opened above the shop, which is where we are recording from today.

In Oct 2006, the ACOG released Opinion Number 346. This stated that “Based on current literature, routine prophylactic amnioinfusion for the dilution of amnioinfusion for meconium-stained amniotic fluid should be done only in the setting of additional clinical trials”. Back then, some experts criticized the decision to abandon amnioinfusion for meconium based on the limitations of the 2005 study which helped to motivate the ACOG decision. And now, a new systematic review and meta-analysis (published ahead of print March 18, 2023; AJOG) has brought new life into this old debate. Can amnio-infusion, in fact, reduce meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS)? Do current professional guidelines need to be updated? We will explore and dissect this new data in this episode.

About the guestTamao Nakayama was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to the U.S. when she was 25 years old. She is still deeply influenced by the Japanese aesthetic, and the belief that 'less is more'. She is an emerging artist with a minimalist abstract style. She currently resides in Virginia. When Tamao was young, the country of Japan was changing significantly. Even though Tokyo had been rebuilt after World War II, many areas were still undeveloped. There were a lot of small studios of traditional craftsmen in every neighborhood. The elementary school she went to was built for experimenting with new educational programs. The school was very innovative and creative in the country at the time, and her creativity blossomed there. She and her classmates created comic books, a SiFi film, and theater plays. She studied art and sculpted with paper at the after-school program. From 2001 to 2003, Tamao studied art and ceramic sculpture at Santa Rosa Junior College in northern California. In 2004, She studied glass, metal, and furniture design at Palomar College in southern California. She won scholarship awards from California College of Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology, Savannah College of Art and Design to study at these schools. However, Tamao felt that she needed to experience how art was implemented in real life and to explore new technologies and materials in the design fields. She moved to Los Angeles and worked for furniture designers, interior designers and architects. In Oct. 2020, Tamao moved from California to Virginia because of Pandemic. During her moving processes, she discovered six of her sculptures were stolen from her storage in San Diego. Unfortunately, the thieves were never caught and these pieces were never found. Tamao started to create from scratch in a garage in Virginia. Originally she was planning to pick up where she left off 17 years ago, to work on ceramic sculpture. However, knowing that the pandemic would prevent her from having access to a kiln for a while, she tried to create sculptures with other materials like concrete. Unfortunately, the temperature in the garage for Virginia winter was too cold for concrete to cure. Finally, she concluded that the only way to continue being creative was to stay inside and paint. In Oct. 2021, Tamao's painting got selected for the juried group exhibition ‘Hypothesis' and was exhibited at the Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA. Tamao is new in art, yet she has numerous unique experiences in design, culture and life. This difficult time in 2020 made her explore 2-dimensional art. Frank upon graduating Union Local High School just six day later he entered Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, SC and is now a Veterans of the United States Marine Corps. He obtained the rank of Sergeant while on active duty and was honorably discharged after 7 1/2 years. After the Marines Frank returned to his home state of Ohio where he held multiple titles at a few of the major automotive retail and commercial companies he was even an armed security guard and a Private Investigator. He was also a volunteer firefighter serving his local community. Frank is a self taught Web designer by learning HTML where he started his own web design company in Ohio because he wanted to be his own boss and because of a computer class in high school it peaked his interest as the world was evolving. Growing up in the backwoods of Ohio he learned what hard work and dedication meant while working on the farms. It was on the farms that his love of making things started. It continued in scouting with the Boy Scouts of American, and why he took woodshop class in high school. So being disciplined and attention to detail isn't new to him. It was when he decided to move out of Ohio in 2013 as a single father of 2 kids and move to California. After learning that all companies wanted a certification for a web designer to get a job and the industry was changing to not using only HTML but a new CSS code. He didn't want to go to college in his mid 30's. So he went back into the automotive industry where he became a Store Manager in 2 1/2 years after being with the company. When his kids' school needed parent volunteers for the programs his kids attend, he stepped up. His kids came first. It was there that he learned that the music department needed props built for half time shows and competitions. While he was helping make props, his join of woodworking came back to life. In 2017 he left corporate America he started Kamikaze Wood Werks as the Owner and Craftsman. When Frank was working on a project for the High School Color Guard team is when he finally figured out the recent joke of calling Marines crayon eaters just maybe true. He just learned about that nickname because of social media. Now when he was in the Marine he nor any other marine was called a crayon eater. There were called Devil Dogs, Jarheads, Grunts, Leathernecks, and bullet sponges. So when he was using crayons to finish the details by coloring it with crayons, he changed colors and put one in his mouth and started gnawing on it. That is when it hit him is there truly an edible crayon out on the market. He learned it had to be made out of chocolate. He was also a volunteer firefighter serving his local community.Frank is a self taught Web designer by learning HTML where he started his own web design company in Ohio because he wanted to be his own boss and because of a computer class in high school it peaked his interest as the world was evolving. After learning that all companies wanted a certification for a web designer to get a job and the industry was changing to not using only HTML but a new CSS code.He didn't want to go to college in his mid 30's. So he went back into the automotive industry where he became a Store Manager in 2 1/2 years after being with the company. When his kids' school needed parent volunteers for the programs his kids attend, he stepped up. His kids came first. It was there that he learned that the music department needed props built for half time shows and competitions. While he was helping make props, his join of woodworking came back to life.In 2017 he left corporate America he started Kamikaze Wood Werks as the Owner and Craftsman. He knew nothing about making things from chocolates, just that it tasted good.In Oct 2017 he reached out to a former team member Cassandra, he remembered she went to school to be a pasty chief and asked her if she knew how to make chocolate write? American hegemony in the world has been formidably challenged in recent years by China. Beijing's rapid technological progress, breakneck defence buildup, expanding space program, increasingly assertive actions in South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, the humongous Belt and Road Initiative and China's leadership in the creation of the world's largest trading block RCEP, reveal its aspiration to modify the international system to its advantage. Washington however is determined to prevent China from having a free reign in reshaping the global order. It has announced it would provide nuclear submarine technology to Australia, with the prospect that its submarines could pop up, undetected, along the Chinese coast. The last time US shared that kind of technology was in 1958, when Britain adopted nuclear reactors to counter the Soviet Union. United States has strengthened its informal alliance with Japan, Australia and India under the QUAD forum, augmented its naval exercises in South China Sea, And has extended moral and arms support to Taiwan. All of this forms part of a direct counter to China! In Oct this year, CIA announced that it had created a new China mission center to position the United States to confront “the most important geopolitical threat we face in the 21st century, an increasingly adversarial Chinese government.” Earlier in the year President xi jinping declared in July that those who get in the way of China's ascent will have their “heads bashed bloody against a Great Wall of steel.” These statements sounds eerily similar to the rhetoric common during the Cold War. Kevin Rudd, the former Australian prime minister and longtime China expert, this year told a German newsmagazine that a Cold War between Beijing and Washington was “probable and not just possible”. The text book definition of COLD WAR is a state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare.Based on what we are witnessing right now between US and China, would it be fair to say that the world is entering a new cold war?To answer this we have with us, the long time International Affairs editor at the Hindu, Dr Stanly Johny. Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum. Intro.(2:22) - Start of interview.(3:04) - Aaron's "origin story". He grew up in New Jersey. After law school he founded a tech company focused on user generated content that got bought by Wikia (the for-profit sister company of Wikipedia). He later practiced law at a few law firms before joining the faculty at Cardozo Law School in 2014. He got interested in Bitcoin early on, and collaborated on the launch of Ethereum. He co-authored a book called The Rule of Code, Blockchain and the Law (2018). He's been constantly playing around with the technology itself and he co-founded OpenLaw, which makes it easy to create legal agreements that work with Ethereum. Most recently he's been spending a lot of time pulling together a bunch of DAOs.(5:13) - How blockchain can disrupt corporate governance. The history of DAOs (6:35). Dan Larimer's Decentralized Autonomous Companies (DACs) article (2013). The concept of DAOs picked up with the Ethereum blockchain. Beyond just corporations, to organizations generally. A lot of people think about blockchain as a system to transfer value in a fast way (~12 mins for Bitcoin and ~12 secs for Ethereum). But beyond this transfer of value, blockchain can also be understood as a system to coordinate disparate people with a set of smart contracts. This allows a new way to structure organizations.(12:13) - The story of The DAO (2016). "It was pretty revolutionary in terms of its objective." After the project got hacked, it led to "quite a dramatic (governance-related) decision to fork the Ethereum network." For a number of years, people had "PTSDAO", they were afraid of other hacks. "But about 2-2.5 years ago that started to change, PTSDAO began to wear off and developers began to look at this problem again." New DAO platforms and tooling emerged, the most notable example of them was Moloch DAO (it provided grants to Ethereum projects). More innovation followed, and DAOs were capable of not only giving grants but also making investments. "There has been a sort of explosion of DAOs." To put some numbers to it, "In Feb 2019 there was ~$10m in these DAO like structures with ~2,000 users, today depending on the numbers you look at, it's north of $10bn with several hundreds of thousands of users."(20:30) - His article "The Rise of DAOs: Opportunities and Challenges" (Stanford Journal of Blockchain, Law & Policy, 2021). Questions on legal frameworks for DAOs: partnerships, LLCs, new state DAO LLC laws: Vermont and Wyoming. Unincorporated Non-Profit Associations (UNAs). Wrapped and unwrapped DAOs. How to think about interests in DAOs (securities or something different like member-managed partnerships). Separating economic and governance rights. Are tradable governance rights securities? Grey zone.(29:58) - His take on The LAO (the DAO that he co-founded focused on venture investments). "This was an effort to reboot the original The DAO concept but in a compliant US law format." It's structured as a Delaware LLC, with changes in its operating agreement that waived fiduciary duties and conflicts of interests. Core decision-making was delegated to a smart contract (code). They pooled capital (in Ether), members were only permitted to purchase up to 9% of the LAO (most purchased between 1-2%). There are about 75 members, scattered around the world, chatting via discord, all decisions are made via blockchain-based voting. "It's created a hive-mind." "Instead of having a few people in charge like in a VC fund, you have a collective group." "The decision-making has been pretty great." "The members of the DAO have been able to move faster than traditional VC funds, generating a higher rate of return (still early so TBD) and better at predicting the future of the market, such as with NFTs." "A network of capital deployers"(37:21) - On DAOs' decision making (7 day voting period), rough consensus (no quorum requirement) and internal mechanisms. Faster and better decision-making (time will tell if the latter is true). Each member is provided with "ragequit" rights (automatic redemption rights). "[I]t usually happens at the beginning, when they join a DAO and they either don't have the time to participate and they feel they should, or they decide they didn't like the opportunity as much."(41:20) - On FlamingoDAO and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Inside TheLAO many members wanted to back NFT projects. A question emerged internally to either invest in the projects or buy the art. They decided to do both. In Oct 2020 Flamingo DAO was born. Now they have 9 different DAOs ("about $200m in ETH has been contributed to these DAOs", over 200 people):The LAO (VC investments, it can invest in equity or tokens, could lead a round, draft a term sheet, nominate a board member who could be any member of the DAO - it hasn't done so yet). How people can become members (accredited investors).Flamingo DAO (NFT projects and art). "It started with a contribution of about 6,000 ETH ($6M at the time) and now if new members want to join they are valuing Flamingo DAO's interests at over $1 billion." (in just a year of existence!)Neptune DAO (DeFi)Neon DAO (Metaverse). "It was opened up last week, it took 40mins to close. It's a $20 million vehicle." ("that process for a VC fund or hedge fund would take 3-6 months.").Red DAO (digital fashion)ReadyPlayer DAO (gaming)Museo (NFT-native museum, art collection)Two more in development.(52:33) - On Sequoia's move to a permanent fund, "[I]t mirrors the structure of our DAO network." The LAO operates like a DAO of DAOs (like Sequoia's permanent fund).(53:59) - His fascination with DAOs: "a lot of it is corporate governance theory at its core." "Blockchain technology is providing a laboratory to play around and geek out on corporate governance." "Maybe [in a digital world] it's better: 1) to have rough consensus voting instead of quorum voting, 2) to have a broader base of decision makers for investing instead of a few people [like in a traditional VC fund], 3) to have more flexible redemption rights instead of lock-up windows or capital calls, 4) to have people provide more capital upfront, 5) to delegate voting rights to other members (different ways to provide proxy voting).(56:49) - His favorite books:Infotopia by Cass Sunstein (2006)Road to Serfdom by F.A. He goes with her to work and many other places and provides the comfort she needs. He even helps her swallow my medication! 8-19-21 Tonight we're 'across the pond' visiting with Ann Farrell and Gordon Baron at Lancashire Mead in Horwich, Lancashire, Great Britain. They make meads in a natural fashion, without stabilizers or finings. Gordon is a Druid and uses mead in ritual.  He wanted a pure mead for this purpose (and didn't want to put chemicals into the earth) so in 2009, he decided ‘how hard can it be?', emptied his local supermarket of honey, dumped it in a bucket with some yeast…… the rest is history!  Three years homebrewing, whilst being a tramping trucker, and an ever increasing circle of friends (strange that!) and then he met Ann in 2012.  Easter 2013, Ann figured she earned enough (self employed teacher) to keep both of them and suggested he start the meadery.  Three months later, Ann was laid off from her job, and joined Gordon at the meadery. Lancashire Mead was started in Nov 2013.  Their first mead was available for sale Feb 2014.  They expanded their space by 50% Sept 2014.  In Oct 2014 they were asked to supply Michelin restaurant L'Enclume (Owned by Michelin starred chef Simon Rogan) – and are still supplying them.  In October 2015 their product was used on BBC's Great British Menu (women's institute).  They expanded again by 100% in 2016.  They were ranked second in the UK mead chart in the Independent Newspaper.  And won their first Mead Madness medals in 2019 and second medals in 2020. Their premises are currently 5x bigger – they started with 1034 sqft, and now are at 5170 sqft. The philosophy that Gordon and Ann have at Lancashire mead is 'be natural'.In line with their spiritual beliefs, they wanted to keep their Mead as natural as possible. This means, firstly, that the honey they use is raw, unpasteurised, and un-sterilised. For the technically minded, throughout the process at their suppliers, the honey has never been heated above 44 degrees Celsius (112 Fahrenheit). It also means that throughout their process it has never been heated above 40 degrees Celsius.Secondly, it means that there are no chemical additions throughout the whole process, with the exception of the yeast nutrients which are digested along with the sugars in the honey during fermentation. They do not use “fermentation stoppers” or “stabilisers”, the yeast naturally dies off and sediments without the aid of any finings (usually animal products like isinglass). Join us as we hang out with Gordon and Ann to explore their mead! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. Pop the champagne and drop the beat … We just sold our first brand. And, yes, the math in that outlandish headline is right: a 15,500% increase from our initial investment. In early 2018, 4x400 — Common Thread Collective’s ecommerce holding company — acquired 80% of FC Goods. The price? $5,000. In Oct. of 2020, we sold it for $1.2M. Minus the founder’s 20% and less broker’s fees, that nets out to $780k. From $5k to $780k: 15,500% ROI. Of course, that clickbaity calculation is far from the whole story. That’s why this is a special episode of the Ecommerce Playbook Podcast with guests Taylor Holiday and Aaron Orendoff … to reveal everything. All the numbers. The entire journey. Every struggle. Every loss. Every win. At the end of the episode, Taylor and I share 10 takeaways — the biggest and most-tactical lessons we learned. Best of all, I’ve summarized them all with examples and illustrations in this article to make the takeaways easier to take away: https://bit.ly/36HjDGf

Introduction Welcome to Distilling Venture Capital.  I am your host, Bill Griesinger Distilling VC is a visionary podcast that provides an insightful and informed view of the key trends affecting the VC and tech startup world.  My mission is to cut through and go beyond the hype that tends to dominate the tech landscape.  And provide you with information you can use Opening Observations: In Today’s Episode I return to what I have termed Unicorn-mania, building on the subject of my first episode in March.  So, it will be a Unicorn-mania Redux. I’m returning to this topic b/c, well, we need to revisit it primarily b/c things seem to be sliding further toward the insane, literally with each passing week. And, I will talk about the continuation of this insanity in the context of some real-life examples:  The true poster-kids for “Unicorns are not real”…  Specifically, I’ll provide insights into WeWork and Uber, and the unmistakable role played by Softbank’s Vision Fund in helping to fuel the craziness. And, let me say from the outset, how disappointing it is to see the technology press and the data analytics firms like CB Insights and Pitchbook (a Morningstar Co.), continue to engage in this ridiculous charade.  I am going to get into some examples of that in a moment.  Suffice it to say, that if you have a subscription to one of these firms, my analysis may leave you questioning what value are getting for the money… To begin, let’s quickly review what I covered and highlight a few take-aways from Episode 1 of Unicorn-mania;   I outlined and highlighted the hype that characterizes VC and techland today with respect to overvalued, so-called Unicorns – companies alleged to be worth $1B+ I also highlighted the Stanford Univ. Study, Squaring Venture Capital Valuations with Reality, that reveals and proves that so-called Unicorn tech companies are substantially overvalued – and offers a valuation model that really works in valuing theses companies  The Study dissects and debunks the use of post-money valuation as nothing short of an illegitimate method for valuing any company, let alone VC-backed private tech companies. Before I go further into the topic, I am going to strongly encourage you to please refer to the Show Notes for this Episode to access links to the following: Link to Stanford University Study:   Squaring Venture Capital Valuations with Reality - Downloadable pdf found here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2955455 (Social Science Research Network – SSRN) Link to Video:   Presentation at SVOD (Sil. Valley Open Doors Conf.), June 2016 by Ilya Strebulav, author of the Study and Professor, Stanford Univ. Grad. School of Business:   https://youtu.be/k4OtGWZ3iYI Original Version of the Study was submitted and published April 19, 2017;  However, the findings were presented about a year earlier in June 2016 at SVOD Conf. (Silicon Valley Open Doors) Where Prof. Strebulav was the Keynote Speaker (I encourage you to got to the link and watch it.  It’s < 20 minutes) Summary of the Findings – From the Study Abstract: We develop a valuation model for venture capital--backed companies and apply it to 135 US unicorns, that is, private tech companies with reported valuations above $1 billion. We value unicorns using financial terms from legal filings and find that reported unicorn post--money valuations average 48% above fair value, with 14 being more than 100% above.  Every Company reviewed and valued, (100% of the Sample) was overvalued to some degree – that means not one company came in at the post-money valuation utilized by the VC industry Values were calculated for each share class, which yields lower valuations because most unicorns gave recent investors major protections such as initial public offering (IPO) return guarantees (15%), vetoes over down-IPOs (24%), or seniority to all other investors (30%).  According to the authors, “Overvaluation arises b/c the reported valuations assume all of a company’s shares have the same price as the most recently issued shares.”  Even though each new round of funding effectively sucks the value out of prior rounds through seniority and superior rights, among other preferences.  Common shares lack all such protections and are 56% overvalued. After adjusting for these valuation-inflating terms of the Preferred rounds, at the time of the Study, almost one-half (65 out of 135) of unicorns lose their unicorn status.   Stanford Study Pre-work:  In 2016, prior to publishing the Stanford Univ. Study, Strebulav and his team of researchers surveyed, as part of their work, more than 1,000 VCs regarding valuations.  It was the first survey of its kind:  Result; 92% of respondents of the VCs surveyed agreed unicorns are over-valued;  A whopping 75% believe unicorns are significantly over-valued AND, as I noted in Episode I, did you ever notice that the PE industry doesn’t have an equivalent designation (Unicorns) for its $1B+ value companies, even those that are in the tech category? Why this study’s findings are not a wake-up call to the industry is currently a mystery to me. Who Cares? To demonstrate that my concerns and the opinions I’ve expressed, that Unicorn-mania is a total distraction, a waste of time, as I stated in Episode I, are not just some overly-dramatic soap-box issue I am on… Turns out, I am in some pretty impressive company, actually – with respect to my criticisms of the mania.  Let’s take a look: All of the examples are from the 4th Quarter of 2015, when some rather prominent and accomplished investors and tech company leaders had begun calling BS on Unicorn valuations, even before the real Mania commenced in earnest over the last several years: Marc Benioff, Chmn and CEO of Salesforce, Dec. 2015 on Bloomberg TV stated,  “The unicorn mania that’s going on, that’s dangerous for our Silicon Valley economy,"   “this is just, you know, unheard of... It’s become a self-esteem issue for these entrepreneurs.”  Benioff states to the SF Bus. Times, also Dec. 2015:  “I’m not buying the unicorn theory…"  There's no reason [for] these companies who claim to be worth billions of dollars and making billions of dollars to stay in the private markets." Benioff asserted that some billion-dollar valuations are the result of "manipulation" of private tech markets and again called on founders to go public to "rationalize" their worth.   Suggesting, by implication, that these values are not rational! Legendary VC John Doerr, who joined Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield in 1980 – [did they even call it venture capital back then?]  – In the same 12/7/2015 SF Bus. Times article Doerr pointed out, “Google has acquired one company per week since 2010 but has only five times paid more than a billion dollars for a company,” Doerr said. “There are 150 companies considered unicorns, 93 are in the United States. How does that math work?”  Great Q indeed!  I suggest it doesn’t, b/c it’s not about the math but rather about the hype. Bill Gurley, another highly respected and accomplished VC veteran from the Valley and Founding partner of Benchmark Capital.  In Oct. 2015 at the WSJ Laguna Beach Tech Conf. stated,  "All these private valuations are fake. ... It's all on paper, it's all a myth,"    "Anyone that's raised $400 million is probably spending $100 million a year," he said. "Until you get liquid, you haven't really accomplished anything." And finally, Mark Suster, a voice I respect a lot in the industry.  He has been a Managing Partner at Upfront Ventures since 2007.  Suster puts out one of the better blogs in venture called “Both Sides of The Table” in which he dispenses and provides excellent, valuable, how-to and other advice for start-up entrepreneurs on a whole range of topics – you should check it out.    Well, back in a Sept. 2015 piece that he published on his blog, Mark does not hold back with his sentiments regarding Unicorns stating, “There’s no one sane I know any more who doesn’t privately say that things have gotten out of hand. Few like to say so publicly.    And I blame unicorns. Mark is very clear that he’s not referring to what he identifies as “successful” companies themselves but “the entire bullshit culture of swashbuckling startups who define themselves by hitting some magical $1 billion valuation number and the financiers who back them irrespective of metrics that justify it.  Unicorn has become part of our lexicon in a sickening way and will no doubt become part of the history we tell about how things got so out of control again. 10 years from now people will be embarrassed to say unicorn.” Well, we are about 5 years out from those highly critical assessments from some really smart people in the industry.  Unfortunately, the sane voices of these reputable tech titans from late 2015 have gone under-reported or unreported in recent years.  Which, I guess, is a primary symptom or characteristic of a “Mania” itself – delusional thinking…prone to exaggeration, denial and so on, but I’m no doctor…so I’ll leave that diagnosis for others to ascertain. I stated in Episode I in March, It Is a big distraction from what’s really important in evaluating and valuing venture-backed tech companies.  We’ve been completely DISTRACTED for nearly 5 consecutive years since the warnings and criticisms of this mania in 2015 by key, reputable industry players in VC and tech. And, that’s despite the publication and dissemination of the most conclusive, comprehensive accurate study ever regarding what the valuations of these companies really are. Here’s the central problem – The $1B+ valuations ascribed to so-called unicorn companies are not true market valuations at all.  They all utilize a metric called “post-money valuation” that inflates their value.  As stated, the Stanford Univ. Study found 100% of all unicorns are actually over-valued to some degree when applying proper market valuation metrics based upon the terms and conditions found in the Preferred Stock rounds The Post-money valuation methodology is like an alternative universe, or worse, when it comes to valuing private tech companies.  This should not be the case.   The multitude of preferences, IPO kickers, and other terms and conditions attached to these preferred rounds have no relationship to company fundamentals and performance. Again, I understand why many are being negotiated…b/c of the high risk and probability of failure in the VC model. So what Strebulav and Gornall had to do in building their model was to be able to identify and value all of the disparate Ts & Cs underlying all the different Preferred rounds, each with differing economics, rights and conditions by round.   This was a rigorous and complicated undertaking.  They have done the industry a great service the development of this model.  One of The Study’s major conclusions: “Our results show that equating post-money valuations and fair values is inappropriate.” AND, “Marking unicorns to their most recent round’s price leads some venture capitalists to overstate their funds unrealized value.  Unrealized asset values are an important determinant of future fund-raising.”   Most LPs revealed to the Study’s authors that most VC funds mark all of their investments to the most recent round’s price.   It might be understandable why an unsuspecting public might not get the full risk impact of this, one wonders why major, sophisticated LPs put up with this nonsense… Mutual Fund filings show that almost all of the major mutual funds tend to hold their private VC-backed assets at the post-money valuation. Where are the Real Journalists? On the Media side - There exists an almost a schizophrenic-like behavior exhibited by the technology press in its years-long coverage of unicorns; To be sure, at the beginning there were some real attempts by a handful of outlets to highlight the findings of the Stanford Study, which were astounding; e.g.  - CB Insights CEO, Anand Sanwal, opined in an August 2019 piece that it (unicorn status) is often used as a scheme to attract top talent in a very tight hiring market for key tech talent… PitchBook Weekend Pitch from Nov. 3, 2019: “For a long while in and around Silicon Valley, unprofitability was what every startup hoped to achieve.  And if losing hundreds of millions of VC dollars was cool, then Adam Neumann was Miles Davis.” Really?  Are you kidding me?  This is your expert analysis that PitchBook is charging for? PitchBook continues, “But these days, in the wake of WeWork’s sudden fall from grace, investors are feeling differently.  All those years of red ink are finally adding up.” The only redeeming thing I could take from such a ridiculous statement is that the writer even knows who Miles Davis is.  But then I realize, the whole thing is an insult to Miles Davis and our intelligence.  Miles Davis was a musical/jazz genius, a master artist.  Adam Neumann was a fraud.  And the VCs in the WeWork deal should have known this through their diligence. So, my criticism is reserved for the adults that allow this nonsense to continue, followed closely by some of the more youthful folks who are in senior roles at the data analytics companies (CB Insights, PitchBook) and write the articles for TechCrunch, Wired, Crunchbase, et. al. Whether you realize it or not, you are on a path to making yourselves irrelevant, in my opinion.  Your so-called analysis is not widely recognized as providing rigorous, meaningful, and dependable insights and analytics regarding what’s really going on in tech.  It’s more like click-bait tactics to get noticed and get “likes” than demonstrating some actual skill and expertise as to how firms should be evaluated and valued by those making the investment or managerial decisions…What are your subscribers actually paying for anyway? Further, as stated in Episode 1, It’s a Consumer Protection Issue:   Definitely NOT a soap box issue! A number of the largest US mutual fund companies (Fidelity, JH, T. Rowe Price and Vanguard) have invested directly in private co. unicorns In 2015, Fidelity > $1.3B into unicorns!  That’s more than any single US-based VC fund invested, in total, that year.  Including $235M in WeWork, $129M in Zenefits – A company that hired too many people, grew too fast, and the company culture spiraled out of control, and $118M in Blue Apron, the food delivery startup that IPO’d in June 2017 and is now looking for a buyer… The common thread on all these investments by major mutual fund companies?  Use of the meaningless post-money valuation to value these private tech company assets in their portfolios.  It’s Mind-boggling to think that this is the valuation methodology used… Incredibly, they have accepted and used these meaningless valuations to mark their holdings of these private tech companies w/o further analysis – a completely irresponsible methodology.  It surely doesn’t inspire confidence in their ability to perform proper valuation analytics  Where’s the adherence to the fiduciary responsibility of these investment firms to their clients?  There are real financial implications for any retail investor in a mutual fund (401k or directly) related to this high-risk category.  How about institutions?  Univ. endowments, public pension funds, etc.? Are mutual fund companies fully disclosing real risk of this asset class to their retail investors?  Accurately?  How so, if at all?  (e.g. – Fidelity had to recently write down its WeWork holdings to reflect the difficulties the company has “reported” after the cancelation of its IPO.) Where are the Regulators?  The SEC… Sagas of WeWork and Uber They represent some of the many Poster-Kids for, Unicorns aren’t real I want to take a look at Uber first then we’ll talk about WeWork. Uber went public in May of 2019, so a little over a year ago.   It priced its shares at $45 upon IPO The IPO was billed as the largest of 2019 as Uber sought to go out at greater than $100B with $120B even suggested by some of the I-Banks underwriting the deal. However, what’s intriguing is to evaluate, are the Uber valuations in the years leading up to its IPO –  In fact, Strebulav Stanford Study authors, posted to Linkedin in early 2018 that they extended their analysis to re-value Uber after a deal it closed at the time with SoftBank –  we are in Jan. of 2018, more than a year before Uber’s IPO. Basically, a consortium led by SoftBank and prior investors, they were purchasing about $8B worth of Uber Common and some early preferred shares in a tender offer for about $34/share AND; An additional $1.25B consideration for some Series G-1 shares for $49/share. Based on the deal terms and details analyzed, it was determined that the Series G-1 shares I just mentioned, being purchased at $49/share, had no special features or terms making them worth more than Common shares.   So, why the 42% mark-up as part of this transaction?  Conclusion:  My Recommendation/proposal:  All private tech company valuations should be run through the Stanford Univ. Study Model prior to any kind of exit or any time the value of a private tech company needs to be certified for audit or other purposes.  These companies owe it to their employees who are provided, in many cases, with near worthless Common stock or options for common. In the interest of time and also to provide a proper analysis, I prefer to save WeWork’s story and saga for my next Episode.     Thank you for joining me for this edition of DVC.  I hope you found the topic interesting and useful.  I am currently working on the DVC website.  In the meantime, Please send questions and your comments regarding today’s episode to: bill@ccs.capital Stay tuned for my next Episode, in a few days, where I will pick back up with discussing and analyzing WeWork’s saga, … Thank you for joining me for this episode of DVC…

In Oct. 2018, Washington County resident Kolby Kolibas (aka Kolby Kay) froze when his daughter asked if he’d seen the Facebook live video of the local child who'd died by suicide. It was all Kolby needed to initiate “the trigger to start paying attention,” he said. As child after child began dying via suicide, Kolibas couldn't help but wonder, “What would cause an 11 or 12-year old to feel like they had nothing, no hope left?” Those experiences prompted Kolibas — a speaker, author and entrepreneur — to dive into an eight-month-long research process with his fiance, Alisa Burnham. They couldn't not act. They knew they had to do something. So, they created A Life Worth Living, a self-funded docuseries focused on bringing awareness, resources and help specific to teen suicide prevention. Listen in as I talk with Kolby about this tragic issue - and what we can all do to better support teens who are suffering.

He is an unsung hero from The Original Series. Associate producer Bob Justman was a key figure in keeping the production side of Star Trek functioning on time ...and on budget. He came to Star Trek in 1965 and started at the beginning, working on the first pilot, The Cage. Justman stayed until 1968, working on 14 of the 24 shows in the third season. Like Gene Coon, Bob Justman had a real impact on the show while he was there. He was a major player in getting Star Trek off the ground and functioning as a production. On this episode of 70s Trek, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto tell you about Associate Producer Bob Justman. Show Notes          Robert "Bob" Harris Justman was born July 13, 1926 in Brooklyn          ⁃        As a boy he really liked Science Fiction          ⁃        His father Joseph Justman was in the produce business. He and his partners did very well.          ⁃        In 1944, Bob signed up for the draft. He didn’t get drafted so he went to the draft board and asked why he wasn’t drafted. They said he wasn’t needed. He told them he wanted to go so they sent him the PE building in LA for a physical. He failed due to his eye sight. He protested so they sent him to Ft MacArthur to get a real physical and made it.          ⁃        While Bob was in the Navy during WW II his father, Joseph, founded the Motion Picture Center studio          ⁃        He rented it to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and in 1950 they bought. The studio became part of Desilu Studios.          ⁃        When Bob returned from the navy he worked at the produce firm. He didn’t get paid very well so when his dad asked him to come to LA to work in the motion picture business he decided to leave the produce firm and go to LA.          ⁃        He hung around the studio for a time until his money ran out. He then went to one of the producers and asked for a job. This landed him his first job working on the film “Three Husbands” as a production assistant Justman had quite a career in film and TV as a Production Assistant and Assistant director prior to TOS          ⁃        Production assistant on such films as          ⁃        1951's          ⁃        The Scarf (featuring Celia Lovsky),          ⁃        New Mexico (featuring Jeff Corey and John Hoyt)          ⁃        M (featuring Norman Lloyd and William Schallert)          ⁃        He Ran All the Way (also with Norman Lloyd),          ⁃        1952's          ⁃        Japanese War Bride (with George D. Wallace),          ⁃        Red Planet Mars          ⁃        Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd (with Leonard Mudie)          ⁃        1953's          ⁃        The Moon Is Blue - made in 2 version an english version and a german version          ⁃        The Moonlighter.          ⁃        Assistant Director and producer          ⁃        To be an assistant director you had to be in the Director’s Guild. At the time, to get in the Guild you had to be either the son of a member or be nominated by a studio which was only allowed one nomination a year. He didn’t have either but he requested to be accepted anyway. After waiting an agonizing 30 minutes for an answer the president of the Assistant Directors Counsel, Bob Aldrich, went to him, shook his hand and said, “Welcome brother”          ⁃        everyone starts as a 2nd assistant director. It only took Justman about a year to become 1st assistant director which was unheard of          ⁃        After Superman Justman was approached to be 1st assistant director on a series of 3 films called “The Americans” which never saw the light of day          ⁃        As an assistant director, Justman worked with director Bob Aldrich on several projects.          ⁃        They first worked together on the 1952-53 NBC series The Doctor, - This was his first AD job          ⁃        after which they collaborated on such films as Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and          ⁃        Attack (1956, featuring William Smithers).          ⁃        Justman's other films where he was assistant director included;          ⁃        The Big Combo (1955, featuring John Hoyt and Whit Bissell),          ⁃        Blood Alley (1955, starring Paul Fix),          ⁃        While the City Sleeps (1956, with Celia Lovsky)          ⁃        Director - Fritz Lang          ⁃        Noticed Justman looking at his set plans and Lang spent time to explain the plans to him even though Justman was the 2nd AD          ⁃        This was technics that Justman used in the future          ⁃        Lang had issues with John Drew Barrymore          ⁃        Barrymore looked to his wife for direction instead of Lang which did not make him very happy          ⁃        Green Mansions (1959, starring Nehemiah Persoff), and          ⁃        1962's Mutiny on the Bounty (featuring Antoinette Bower, Torin Thatcher and stunts by Paul Baxley).          ⁃        Justman was also an assistant director on television shows such as          ⁃        The Adventures of Superman (1953-58, 78 ep)          ⁃        associate producer for all 78 episodes and          ⁃        assistant director on the classic series during its 1954-55 season.          ⁃        Justman says that George Reeves was a trooper given what he was put thru          ⁃        One time the wire broke and he dropped down to the cement          ⁃        Justman learned early to schedule certain shots very carefully. As an example he tells a story about how Reeves would drink his lunch so when he would do the spring-board jump out the window he sort of missed and hit his knees on the window sill          ⁃        The Thin Man (1958-59, 31 ep)          ⁃        Northwest Passage (1958-59, 13 ep)          ⁃        Philip Marlowe (1959-60, 26 ep)          ⁃        Alcoa Presents One Step Beyond (1959-1961)          ⁃        Produced at the same time as the more well-known The Twilight Zone (1959)          ⁃        Some stars included Cloris Leachman, Warren Beatty, Jack Lord, Christopher Lee, Elizabeth Montgomery, Donald Pleasence, and William Shatner,          ⁃        Dr. Kildare (1961-66, 6 ep)          ⁃        Was asked by the President of MGM TV if Justman new any composers. Justman had heard some of Jerry Goldsmith’s scores and recommended him. As we talked about in Episode XXX This was one of Goldsmith’s breakout opportunities.          ⁃        Justman and Goldsmith have never met          ⁃        The Outer Limits (1963-65, 20 ep)          ⁃        He served as the assistant director for all 20 episodes and a Production Manager in 1964          ⁃        Appeared in the 1964 episode "A Feasibility Study" (directed by Byron Haskin, written by Joseph Stefano, and starring David Opatoshu)          ⁃        Worked with Shatner on “Cold Hands, Warm Heart” (1964)          ⁃        Sally Kellerman, James Dohan          ⁃        Lassie (1965-66, 4 ep)          ⁃        My Friend Flicka (1956-57)          ⁃        While the City SleepsFritz Lang          ⁃        In Oct 1964 Justman met GR at Desilu to talk to him about Associate Producer role for the first TOS pilot “The Cage”. Justman recommended Byron Haskin saying that he (Justman) did not have enough post production experience          ⁃        first to call Gene Roddenberry "The Great Bird of the Galaxy," drawn from a throwaway line from the original series episode "The Man Trap" That takes us to October 1964. Gene Roddenberry was in pre-production for Star Trek’s first pilot, The Cage and he needed an associate producer. An Associate Producer’s job is to do the dirty work on a show. This person makes sure both the production and post-production phases are running smoothly for every episode. They are also responsible for making sure each episode doesn’t run over budget. So with a show as complicated as Star Trek was going to be, Gene needed an experienced hand. He asked James Goldstone who had worked with Gene on The Lieutenant if he had any suggestions. He recommended Bob Justman. Justman met with Gene for about 30 minutes and Gene offered him the job. While Justman really wanted it, he turned down Roddenberry’s offer. He felt Star Trek’s post-production needs would be great, and he was afraid he didn’t have the experience to get the job done. But they also needed an experienced assistant director. Justman was, at the time, working on The Outer Limits. But Desilu’s Executive in Charge of Production, Herb Solow, called and asked if Justman could work for Star Trek temporarily, just 6 weeks. And that was it. The deal was done and Justman came to Star Trek. Now the original position that Justman had interviewed for, associate producer, went to Byron Haskin. He was an experienced producer, but was hard to get along with. And as work started on The Cage, he and Roddenberry butted heads a lot. Rodenberry would want a certain effect on a shot, and Haskin would tell him it couldn’t be done. Period. He gave Gene no alternative ideas. Often times, Justman was in the middle of these disputes trying to nudge Haskin to come up with something Work on The Cage finished, and NBC rejected it. But invited Roddenberry to try again. When Star Trek was offered to do the second pilot, Gene asked Justman back. This time, though, he gave him the job of associate producer. Gene had had enough of Haskin. Because of the budget on the 2nd pilot, when post-production finished on it, so did Justman’s job. This was the summer of 1965. But Desilu had attracted a number of pilot projects that needed produced. So Solow decided to make Justman the associate producer on all of them. This way he could stay at Desilu and be close by if Star Trek was picked up. Some of the work he did included Desilu’s other big show, Mission Impossible. Star Trek was picked up by NBC in March 1966. And Justman’s first task was to move the starship sets from the soundstage where the 2nd pilot was shot, to a new soundstage that would be its home for the series. This was actually a monumental task. Each section had to be removed, crated and put back into place on the new soundstage in exactly the same configuration. The move resulted in some of the sets being redesigned, and reworked for the series. One of those sets was the bridge that got a big make over. As the show started production, it was Justman’s job to make sure all the little details were taken care of. Some of this work included analyzing scripts and establishing production budgets for them, Making sure production on one episode, production and post production on a 2nd were all moving forward simultaneously and on schedule. Any issues for any shows in any of these stages, were Justman’s to work out. Along with his day-to-day duties, Justman also acted in one episode of the series, though he is not creditied for it, He is the voice of a security guard in the episode Conscience of the King. He also found time to come up with a story idea. He came up with the basic story for the episode Tomorrow is Yesterday. In fact, he laid that story out in a memo to Gene on April 12, 1966. When he didn’t hear anything for 8 months, he sent a reminder to Gene about the idea. At that point, the show was hungry for scripts, so Roddenberry approved of the idea and assigned Dorothy Fontana to write the screenplay. But in his second memo, you cans ee a little of Justman’s wit. He wrote at the end, “Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience, as otherwise I feel I shall be forced to sell this story idea to “Time Tunnel.” ” That’s just one example of Justman’s wit, and it is pretty legendary. He would often let his sarcastic sense of humor and dry wit fly in memos. An example of his humor can actually be seen in the closing credits of the show. For Herb Solow’s credit, Justman intentionally chose a picture of the Balok dummy from the Corbmite Maneuver and positioned Solow’s credit just under the glaring eyes of Balok. Justman later wrote in the Book Inside Star Trek, “I thought it a fitting tribute, as did Herb, who thanked me profusely, thereby depriving me of some heavy-duty gloating. I still have the original credit and display it in my office at home, suitably framed in the cheapest, junkiest frame I could find.” And there’s another incident that speaks to Justman’s humor. The show was shooting a script that was still being written by Roddenberry. The last shot was about to be completed, and if they didn’t get the new pages for the next scene, they would be forced to shut down production. That costs money! So Justman went to Gene’s office. Roddenberry kept writing away, and didn’t acknowledge Justman. Justman waited a few minutes and finally asked, him, “How much longer Gene?” Roddenberry ignored him and kept writing. Justman waited some more. At one point Gene looked up, thinking about something, ignored Justman, and went back to work. Justman later wrote, “He shouldn’t have done that. I climbed up onto his desk and stood there, looking down at him. ‘That’ll teach him to ignore me, I thought.” After a few minutes more, Gene finally ripped the pages free of the typewriter, finished scribbling on them, and without looking at Justman, reached up and handed them to him. Without saying anything, Justman jumped down and went to the set. This became a standard routine through the 1st and 2nd seasons of the show. Whenever Gene was still writing, Justman would jump up on his desk and wait for the pages. But there’s a little addendum to this story. There came a time when Justman tried to get in Gene’s office and the door was locked. He realized that there was an electronic latch on the door that, when Justman entered the outer office, Gene’s secretary would activate. Not to be out done, Justman waited until the secretary left on an errand. Found the switch and unlocked Gene’s door. Then without saying a word, he entered Roddenberry’s office, walked past Gene who was busy writing, and exited through another door at the other end of the office. Justman wrote, “We never discussed it, not even in later years. It was our own private joke and it helped cement an already close friendship.” The 2nd year of Star Trek was by far its best. It’s when all the right people were active in the right positions. Speaking of positions, Justman told Roddenberry at this time that he wanted to move up to a full producer’s position for Star Trek’s third season, and Gene agreed it was probably time. With the letter writing campaign at the end of the 2nd year, Star Trek’s third season was guaranteed. But it wasn’t going to go the way anyone thought it would. NBC first told Roddenberry that Star Trek would be on at 7:30 on Monday. Then it changed the position to Friday at 8:30. But, it finally settled on Fridays at 10pm, a time when Star Trek’s core audience would not be home watching TV. It was this move by NBC that prompted Roddenberry to move out of his producer role and become the Executive Producer of the show. That position is further up the chain of command, and has nothing to do with the day-to-day operations. Roddenberry had, in effect, quit Star Trek. As pre-production for the third season began, the show had no story editor. So Justman jumped in and started reading and analyzing stories and scripts. Then he would forward his thoughts to Gene. Roddenberry never responded and seldom read Justman’s reports. To make matters worse, there was no one to rewrite scripts. Justman urged Roddenberry to hire someone. Gene finally got back to him and said, “Good news Bob, Star Trek’s going to have a new producer this year.” Justman thought gene was about to say, “It’s you.” Instead, Roddenberry said, “Fred Freiberger’s coming in as our new producer…” Hustman was stunned. “Gene, I thought I would be producer.” “You will,” said Roddenberry. “You’ll be a co-producer.” The new studio, Paramount, and NBC wanted an experienced hand at the help of such a complicated show. Justman was viewed as a nuts and bolts guy, and Roddenberry didn’t fight for him. Justman’s attitude toward Star Trek never recovered. In fact the morale of the entire cast and crew began to sink. Star Trek was not a fun place to work anymore. Gene was now gone. Frieberger had to labor to understand the show. And the bulk of the daily chores fell on Justman. He later wrote, “I was alone, struggling against insuperable odds.” Without Roddenberry, the writing process was no longer about good stories. It was now just budget-driven. Justman wrote, “There were no highs and no lows---just a boring in-between…The Star Trek I knew, and was proud to be a part of, was no more.” He expressed his concerns to paramount’s head of TV, Doug Cramer. Cramer asked Justman to stay and promised him his pick of future pilots to work on if he did. Justman said he’s love to do a pilot for Cramer, but he wanted out of his contract. Paramount came back and offered more money, but that wasn’t what Justman wanted. Justman was burned out. That’s when Herb Solow called. He was now the head of MGM Television and he offered Justman a full producers job on the pilot for “Then Came Bronson.” He quit Paramount the next day and, according his own words, became persona non grata at Paramount for the next 18 years. After Star Trek, Justman went on to work on shows like Search and Man from Atlantis. In 1987, he rejoined Gene Roddenberry and others from The Original Series on Star Trek The Next Generation. He served as Supervising Producer for 17 episodes in the first season. In 1996, he and Herb Solow published their book, Inside Star Trek: The Real Story. If you haven’t read this one, it is a very captivating look at what was going on behind the scenes at Star Trek. Bob Justman died of Parkinson’s Disease in 2008.

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Anonymous: Hi, Dr. Cabral, Thank you for your informative podcasts. What a true service to your listeners! I’m concerned about the effect of work stress on my husband’s health. He has a highly demanding job and travels a lot for work. Lately, I’ve noticed tremors/jerk-like movements while he’s asleep. He’s had some concerns about numbness to his feet, and he was told it’s likely peripheral neuropathy (his grandfather has it too). I’ve also noticed a mild but noticeable shaking in his hand, but he’s quick to dismiss it as nothing. Could these be signs of Parkinson’s disease or something else? Should he see a neurologist? And what lab tests might be good for him to get? Please advise... Thank you! Anonymous Kathryn: you speak of your morning movements a lot. Can you do a podcast on specifically what movements you do? I'm assuming they are some type of dynamic stretches and yoga poses but what are they specifically? I love your podcast. Lisa: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have fatty liver due to diabetes. I am wondering if it is safe to use your Detox protocol. I don't want to inadvertently cause more damage to my liver. Thanks so much, Lisa Tara: My mom (who is super into natural health) just referred me to your podcast. I listened to episode 858 and went to order the omega 3 and daily shakes for the daily health of me and my girls (2 and 5 years old). I am also an avid runner who has been battling plantar facitious since January. I added the Advanced Collegen Support into my basket, but thought I should ask if that’s the product you’d recommend? Per my doctor’s orders, I’ve been tapping, resting, icing, massaging, and wearing shoes with orthotics all the time (no bare feet) to help combat it, but it’s not going away (she also had me take 1 round of oral steroids, which was aweful). multiple bottles of each product, so I’d really like the discount if possible. Georgie: Hi Dr Cabral! I recently found your podcast and have been listening non-stop over the last couple of months. Thank you for sharing all your incredible knowledge - I have learned a TON. I'm hoping that you can shed some light on a random issue I've experienced... Over the last 6 months I've developed an ad-hoc reaction to alcohol. Occasionally, after 1-2 drinks, I develop a splotchy rash on my neck (and sometimes my chin/jaw) and I suddenly find it more difficult to breathe. The weird thing is that it doesn't occur every time I drink (maybe once every 5 times), and it's not tied to one type of alcohol. I've experienced this reaction after drinking red wine, vodka and tequila. Any idea what this could be? Ryan: I took a 24 hour urine organic acids test through Quest Diagnostics and was wondering if you could read the labs and give recommendations? I also had a handful of other tests done such as testosterone, DHEA, serotonin, vit d, thyroid, blood panel and a few others if those would help with the recommendations. If so, what would the cost be? Thanks for the help Ryan Chillia: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us , and on many different levels. It is appreciated:) I did submit this to the Facebook support group and received an answer with really the best place to start, as far as getting certain labs done, and potentially becoming one of your private concierge clientst, but I am hoping you could take a bit of time to shed some light for the sake of my friend, who is in the thick of trying to heal herself, just to get a better understanding of what is happening with her body. Here is my best friend’s account: “In Oct 2017 I passed a fully intact round worm and was given Mebendazole by my local MD. Shortly after taking the first round of Mebandazole, I started become sick. Fatigue, heavy feeling blood, brain fog, nausea, restless feet, insomnia, dehydration ( drinking 1.5 gallons of water a day), dry cracking tongue, extreme fatigue with any cardio. With Mebendazole, you take the drug twice, but after the second round, I was still passing worms. I was confident that I still had a parasite infection, but stool tests only came back negative, so MD would not prescribe medication. I went to a private clinic out of town that specialized in parasites and was diagnosed with Round Worm and Gardia. For the next two months, I did a parasite treatment from the clinic and redoing tests showed that the parasites were gone. Unfortunately I continued to get sicker to the point I could no longer look after myself. From November to March, I was unable to walk more than a city block. I spent my time in bed and was unable to do simple things like make meals, or bring in firewood. I was aware that some foods were making me incredibly sick ( ending up in the emergency because I lost motor control after drinking a litre of kombucha ) March, I started seeing a naturopath that explained histamine intolerance as well as SIBO. With a serious change in diet, I saw instant results. I could walk a short distance and begin to look after myself. Stool test were sent to Doctor’s Data. My results came back with very low beneficial flora. I did not have any of the good flora Escherichia coli or Enteroccus spp, but I had a serious over growth of Alpha hemolytic strep, Beta Strep group B, Citronbacter freundi complex, Gamma hemolytic strep, Kluyvera ascorbate, Pseudomonas chloroaphis, Candida albicans and Candida lustitaniae With these results, I started treatment to replace my good flora and get rid of the bad flora. I have been taking once a day to kill off the bad stuff : 10 drops of grape fruit seed extract, 500mg of grape seed extract, 4 capsules of GI Microb- X (Tribulus 200mg, Magnesium caprylate 150mg, Sweet Wormwood 15mg, Bearberry 100mg, Blackwalnut 100mg, Common bearberry 50mg) Once a day for gut health : chlorophyll 5 drops, Vitamin B- Supreme ( Designs for Health Brand), GI- Revive anti inflamatory ( Designs for Health), 5000Iu Vitamin D3, 2 Tsp Omega 2 with EPA+DHA Twice a day: 25billion cfu Gut Pro Since March, my health has improved dramatically, but I feel that I am at 50 percent of my normal abilities. I cannot walk up a hill or anything cardio and I can not eat anything outside of my limited foods without a histamine flush that can slow me down or put me in bed for the afternoon. I do believe that I have always had a histamine problem. I was two months premature and then as a 11 month old, was hospitalized for Toxoplasma Gondii. I have always had food sensitivities, but boundless energy and good physical strength. I am confident that once I am better, my quality of life will probably be better than it has ever been, I am now looking for guidance on how to refine what I am doing to heal faster.” Lucy: Hi there. I am a 21 year old female and I am reaching out because I have dealt with gut & digestive issues for the last 5-10 years. 97% of things I eat immediately cause my stomach discomfort. If the food is unhealthy or full of sugar I usually feel stronger discomfort but I can even drink water too fast and feel discomfort from that as well. I did a food journal for a while and wasn't able to find any consistencies in what bothers my stomach and what doesn't. I have had allergy testing and it all came back negative. I just recently started seeing a gastroenterologist at banner hospital, she started by putting me on Pantaprazol thinking maybe the issue was inflammation in my stomach and that didn't help at all. I am scheduled to take a barium swallow test and see my gastroenterologist again next week for her to review my results. I think a naturopathic approach would be a lot more successful for me, as I would like to stay away from anti-biotics and surgeries if possible. I am looking forward to hearing back from you! Natalia: Hi. In one of the podcast it was mentioned about health/nutrition certifications that the Dr has recommended but can’t find them when i search. Could you guide me in the right direction? Also it was mentioned that he was coming up with his own certification i would like info on that please!!!! Today is August 23rd, 2017 and our guests this week are: Lynn Heidelbaugh, Curator at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum Mike Shuster from the great war project blog, The Storyteller and the Historian, Richard Rubin and Jonathan Bratten    John Motley from the 100 Cities / 100 Memorials project in Fort Towson, Oklahoma And Andrew Carroll, Founding Director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University WW1 Centennial News is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] We’ve gone back in time 100 years to explore the war that changed the world! It is 1917 and America is preparing a war effort that is transforming her more quickly than any previous event in her short history. For example, 100 years later people will simply take for granted, the country’s ability to move huge volumes of goods, resources and people across the vast land. But there is no highway system in 1917… There are few canals… but there is a large and even transcontinental infrastructure - The railroads! So it is not surprising, that trains quickly becomes a key strategic element in the war effort, 100 years ago. Following are some the headlines and notes from the Official Bulletin - America’s War Gazette published daily by the Committee on Public Information, the US government propaganda ministry headed by George Creel. We’ll track the story about the railroads through its headlines and pages starting just a month after war is declared.   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: May 15, 1917 Headline: BILL TO GIVE PRESIDENT POWER OVER FREIGHT SHIPMENTS INTRODUCED The story reads: "As war conditions develop It is certain there will be times when the shipment of arms and ammunition may be of prime importance ; at another time the movement of provisions may be more important; yet at another, the movement of coal and Iron ore may become the most Important of all.   Under these conditions It is thought essential that the President should have the power to determine what particular freight shall have priority and for how long this priority should continue.   Less than a month later --  the scope of the challenge is outlined in the Bulletin:   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: June 5th, 1917 Headline: THE MOBILIZATION OF RAILROADS FOR THE NATION'S WAR NEEDS ARE DEFINED The story reads: Freight cars are lacking… There are 2,500,000 freight cars in the United States and their capacity is barely sufficient for current commercial needs. The railroads in the near future will use 120,000 cars to transport material for the construction of the ' new army ' training camps, and a continuous flow of cars to keep those camps in supplies. They estimate that It will take 200,000 cars to carry the material used for the construction of the Government merchant ships, whether of steel or of wood. They will require an enormous number of cars to move the steel for the ships under construction for the Navy, and no estimate whatever can be made of the number of cars which will be needed to carry the material used in the manufacture of munitions and supplies for the Army, and in moving them a second time from the point of manufacture to the shipping point.   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: June 21th, 1917 Headline: MORE EXTENDED USE OF INTERIOR WATERWAYS OF COUNTRY URGED BY SECRETARY OF COMMERCE   TM: The “maxing out” of capacity is clearly being recognized by all concerned --- and everyone is looking for answers as this story illustrates:   “The president of one of our leading railways has recently said : " The railroads of the United States are carrying more freight than ever before in the history of the country, but when they have carried traffic up to 100 per cent of their capacity there still remains 15, 25, perhaps 30 per cent in traffic which it is impossible for them to carry at all." No one --- who knows the facts, will question that the railways of the country are overwhelmed by the present traffic. There is said to be a shortage of 150,000 cars. Radical measures are being taken In an effort to meet the situation. The railroads are Insufficient for the task laid upon them and the problem is likely to become more serious. It will not be long before large bodies of troops must be moved with their equipment in this country.   TM: Although Americans were used to traveling through the country by rail - A visit to aunt Tilly in not in the cards anytime soon,   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: July 17, 1917 Headline: HUGE REDUCTION IN PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE The story reads: The railroads of the United States, as part of their effort, under the direction of the Railroads' War Board, report the elimination of passenger trains aggregating over 16,200,000 miles of train service per year. This is done by the railroads to save man power, fuel, and motive power, that they may be applied to the transportation of necessities. Every ton of coal, every locomotive, every mile of track space, every man whose duties are absorbed by an unnecessary passenger train --- can be put to effective use in freight service, and nothing is more necessary at the moment to insure the safety and prosperity of the country than that the railroads be able to handle the utmost possible amount of freight.   The elimination of passenger service already reported will make available over 1,120.000 tons of coal for other purposes. TM: 10 days later a positive public relations story is published in the bulletin about the railroad companies   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: July 27, 1917 Headline: RAILROADS INCREASE NATION'S FOOD SUPPLY BY LEASING SURPLUS LANDS WHICH THEY OWN The story reads: To help increase the Nation's food supply by utilizing as much idle acreage as possible the railroads of the West and Middle West are leasing millions of acres of lands - which they own  - at nominal rental for grazing and agricultural purposes. In addition to leasing their land to farmers and cattlemen at a nominal rental, a number of the railroads are offering garden plots, rent free, to families along their right of way.   This leads to the big story this week one hundred years ago…   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: August 20th, 1917 Headline: PLANS FOR GREATEST TROOP MOVEMENT IN U. S. HISTORY ARE NOW BEING PERFECTED The American Railway Association Is Preparing Schedules To Insure Safe and Prompt Carrying of the Armies. The story reads: Altogether, 687,000 men will have in be transported to the various cantonments that the Government is building to house the new National Army. The movement will start September 5. Between that date and September 9 the railroads will complete the entrainment of 200,000 men, or approximately 30 per cent of the total number scheduled to be moved to the various training camps. The facts are that to move merely one field army of 80,000 men requires 6.229 cars made up into 366 trains, with as many locomotives and train crews. Meanwhile, in addition to moving the 687,000 recruits for the National Army, the railroads have been asked to supply transportation for the 350,000 members of the National Guard to their training camps.   Closing TM: It is easy to see how challenging and strategic this key piece of infrastructure is to the war effort - So….Finally, in December of this year , 1917,  the Interstate Commerce Commission recommends the total federal control of the railroad industry to ensure efficient operation. The takeover measures are to go beyond simply easing the congestion and expediting the flow of goods; they will have total control of all parties—management, labor, investors, and shipping— on behalf of this national interest. President Wilson issues an order for nationalization of the US railroad industry on December 26, 1917 [BANG SOUND EFFECT]   The US Postal Service in WW1 Interview with Lynn [SOUND EFFECT WOOSH] Now that the troops are shipping out - first to training camp and soon thereafter overseas, another key logistics elements has to be nailed into place - one that is essential the the mental and spiritual well being of our fighting forces - Mail service! With us today is Lynn Heidelbaugh (HEIDEL-BAW), Curator at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum who is going to talk to us about the mail service and how it adapted to the changing needs of a population at war.   Welcome, Lynn!   [exchange greetings] [Lynn, can you fill us in on how the postal service in america had to transform and adapt when war was declared? ] [You lost postal workers to the draft didn’t you?] [Lynn - later in the show we’ll hear from Andrew Carroll from the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University - he contributed to your Pershing  “My fellow Soldiers - Letters from WWI” exhibit at the museum. When did that open?] [Lynn - Museum exhibits are not really about artifacts and objects - they are about stories - as the curator for a postal museum exhibit about WW1 - is there anything that sticks out as a particularly memorable story.] [Did the postal service get Involved with mail censorship or was that strictly the war department?] [Thank you Lynn] That was  Lynn Heidelbaugh (HEIDEL-BAW), Curator at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. link:https://postalmuseum.si.edu/   War in the Sky [SOUND EFFECT] This week in our War in The Sky segment we are going to talk about the famous US 94th Aero Squadron- which is established at Kelly Field, Texas on August 20, 1917. The “Hat in the ring Gang” named for their squadron logo -  is one of the first American pursuit squadrons to reach the Western Front and see combat. Three notable airmen serve with the squadron, perhaps the most well known is Eddie Rickenbacker, who will be awarded almost every decoration attainable, including the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross. On a personal note, I have a silver cigarette case from my grandfather that is signed by a bunch of his flying buddies including Eddie Rickenbacker. I’ve always treasured that... So, another interesting member of the Hat in the Ring Gang is  Raoul Lufbery.. Who transferred over from the famous Lafayette Escadrille. Lufbery, a really colorful character, famously adopted a lion cub while with the Lafayette and named him Whiskey, later got Whiskey a lioness playmate called Soda. Now - besides being a little eccentric, he is, of course,  also a great aviator… Finally there is Douglas Campbell who will become the first AMERICAN  TRAINED pilot to be an air ace. We will follow more of the 94th Aero Squadron’s exploits over the coming months, a famous squadron that was born 100 years ago this week. There are several links in the podcast notes to learn more. The word for “punishment” is “Strafe” - And that is exactly what german fighter planes did - as they swept down from the skies, flying low to the ground as they unloaded their machine guns into the soldier in the trenches. It was a punishment from the sky. This air to ground support maneuver soon become known as to “strafe” or strafing the troops - an anglicized version of the german word for punishment - Strafe -  this week’s word for - Speaking WW1 - see the translation from Google Translate in the podcast notes. Can web-based social systems with their wide reach, user-generated and user-filtered content harness the wisdom of crowds? Duncan Watts’ recent experiments reveal how popularity based web social systems can throw up fickle, random trends that are essentially unreplicable, and only tangentially related to quality. However, popularity as a way to filter information continues to rise in popularity - replacing hierarchical menus, overtaking tags, and even used in lieu of relevance. Rashmi will link decades of psychology research on group decision making and social influence to what is happening on the web today. She will discuss different models of popularity based filtering such as Digg and YouTube. What are ways to avoid the Watts dilemma - including Google’s model of sociality, tag-based social systems, and object-based social networks. She will present some principles for the design of web social systems and how there were used in the design of SlideShare and discuss how SlideShare as an evolving social system handles popularity. Rashmi Sinha is a designer, researcher and entrepreneur. She is the CEO for SlideShare, a rapidly growing site for sharing slideshows. Rashmi writes a blog at rashmisinha.com. Rashmi received a PhD in cognitive psychology from Brown University in 1998. After moving to UC Berkeley for a PostDoc, she fell in love with the web, and realized that many issues that web technologists think about are problems of human psychology. She switched departments and worked on search interfaces & recommender systems at the Information School, UC Berkeley. Deciding that she enjoyed practical problems more, she co-founded Uzanto, a user experience consulting company. Lately Uzanto has focused on products - their first product MindCanvas (released Nov 2005) - reshapes traditional research techniques like card-sorting, and divide-the-dollar into game-like experiences for remote research. In Oct 2006, Uzanto released its second product - Slideshare, a website for sharing presentations. Now, Rashmi is focused on the business side of things but is still intimately involved with design for both products. Years ago I watched a TV show with fascination as the host, james Burke, started with a single item then over the course of the next hour, showed it's link to something else, then that to something else, until after a dozen seemingly disconnected links it arrived at some marvel of modern convenience and daily life. The show was called Connections. It's one of several things that stoked my love of history. So, we start this episode with someone who at first blush, has nothing to do with where we'll end. But Joachim of Fiore provides a single piece of complex system that led to one of the biggest controversies and surprises of the European Middle Ages.Joachim was an Italians lad who after a trip to the Holy Land returned to Italy to Join the Cistercian monks. He was ordained a priest in 1168, & in 1177 was made abbot of a monastery in Corazzo. He stayed 14 yrs, then left to start a new order in Fiore.Joachim is one of many who would never have been known to history were it not for his innovative ideas about history & eschatology.  He set forth all history as belonging to 3 overlapping circles. The Age of the Father roughly corresponds to the time of the OT. The Age of the Son he calculated to be 42 periods of 30 yrs each starting with the birth of Christ and running till the yr AD 1260. Then would commence the Age of the Spirit which would be marked by a complete revamping of human society. The Church would succeed in its task of world evangelism, not only seeing most people saved, but infiltrating human institutions to effect world-wide societal reform that would make the current system of Medieval Church hierarchy useless – Pointless. What needs is there of a special priesthood when every believer possessed the same awareness of God & compliance with His perfect will? While Joachim has many supporters, the Pope, cardinals and archbishops weren't thrilled and had Joachim's ideas squashed in 1263 at the Synod of Arles. (our-l)Joachim's theory of history was developed against the backdrop of that Long Road to Reform we spent many episodes on in Season 1. And just because his ideas were officially quashed, that didn't mean everyone immediately erased them form their minds. Just the opposite. They continued on in the thinking of many, especially in a branch of reform-minded Franciscans. If the current system of Church hierarchy was about to pass away in favor of a more democratic system, why not move toward that now? Why Wait? You see, over the previous couple centuries, the Papacy had made itself into a secular government, claiming a divine mandate to do so. Religious doctrine was merged with  political theory. When HR Emperor Frederick II asserted the sovereignty of the State and refused Pope Innocent IV's political claims, he was declared a heretic. But political rulers are usually able to find loyal priests upset with their ecclesiastical superiors who are more than happy to make a counter charge of heresy against the Pope. Politics makes strange bed-fellows.So, it's no wonder that the political tug of war between popes and kings would led to outright combat. When at the dawn of the 14th C, Pope Boniface VIII issued the famous Unam Sanctam, claiming every human being had to obey him to be saved, then went on a crusade against any and all church officials who opposed him, King Philip IV of France decided it was time for some Pope Smack Down. Philip seized Boniface and incarcerated him. Commoners rallied and managed to free him from the King's guards but Boniface was a broken man and died shortly after. To justify the harsh treatment the pope'd been given,  Philip started up a posthumous investigation into heresy. The next pope, Clement V, managed to end the hearings but forever lived under the shadow and threat of Philip's wrath. That became painfully clear by his participation in one of the most spectacular heresy actions of the Middle Ages. Unlike most such investigations, it didn't involve a single  individual or even small group. It took n an entire religious order: The Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon; better known as the Knights of the Temple, the Templars. The Crusades of the 12th C didn't create the 3 main military orders of Templars, Hospitallers and Teutonic Knights, but the Crusades did certainly provide them the boost that made them the fixtures of European Society they became. The Templars were founded in 1128, their rule penned by the famous Bernard of Clairvaux. While all three orders have fascinating histories, the Templars were the most colorful, richest, and most powerful of the 3 orders. They were formed to protect Christians making pilgrimage to the Holy Land and seemingly served that purpose well in their early days. But they were brutally suppressed in a spectacular police action in Europe later. While the real reason for their suppression was political, with a heavy dose of greed on Philip's part, the official charge against them was “heresy.”As with so many other persons and movements that run afoul of official church hierarchy, the history of the Templars is obscured by a thick coat of dubious charges. From the 12th C, the Templars were in heated competition with the Hospitallers for relevance in the Holy Land. The Templars originally laid claim to Jerusalem and its environs while the Hospitallers settled into other Crusader-occupied regions. When the Muslims reconquered Jerusalem the Templars tried to take over some the Hospitaller holdings. Blood was spilled. The Templars weren't able to get a foothold, so they returned to Europe. Rumor had it while in Jerusalem they'd stumbled on a vast hoard of ancient treasure and were fabulously rich. No one had seen this treasure, but it became common knowledge the Templars were now the custodians of King Solomon's vast wealth. Now, for sure, the Templars had amassed much wealth in their conquest of Jerusalem, but the rumor of untold treasure was a fiction. What kept the rumor alive was the fact the Templars had become bankers of the extended realms taken in the First Crusade. They set up hundreds of depositories of their wealth all across Europe and the Near East with centers in London & Paris. As the Crusading Cause progressed some European nobles headed out on a Crusade placed their assets under Templar management till their return. It wasn't long before the Templars were stewarding vast sums. In 1150 they began issuing letters of credit for pilgrims headed to the Holy Land. Before leaving, a pilgrim would deposited their valuables at one of the hundreds of Templar forts and receive a document marking the value of their deposit. When they arrived at their destination, they then exchanged this document at one of the Templar forts there for treasure of equal value. It was an early form of banking and was most likely the first official  system to use checks. It vastly enhanced the safety of pilgrims since it  made them less appealing targets by bandits. The Templars set up financial networks across Christendom. They secured large tracts of land in Europe and the Near East they made into farms, vineyards & built impressive fortifications as bastions of strength to house their wealth and symbols of their power, all of which added to the sense the Templars were worth trusting in to keep your valuable safe while you were Away Crusading. They got into manufacturing and into trade in the import-export business. They had their own fleet of ships & at one point owned the island of Cyprus. Some have called the Knights Templar History's First Multinational Corporation. In 1305, Pope Clement V sought to affect a reconciliation btwn the feuding Templars & Hospitallers. He invited the leaders of both Orders to meet and hammer out a compromise that would see them merge into a single Order. Neither was interested but Clement persisted. A year later, the Grand Masters were set to meet with the Pope again. Jacques de Molay, the Templar leader arrived first. The Hospitaller leader, de Villaret, was delayed for several months. While de Molay waited, he & Clement got to talking about a scandal that had spun up 2 yrs before due to the charges of an ousted Templar knight. This knight, in prison awaiting a death sentence, had shared a cell with a French adventurer and confided to him some of the secret and scandalous shenanigans Templars engaged in. When the adventurer was released, he made his way to the King of Aragon's court where he reported what he'd supposedly heard. The King of Aragon rejected the report as the scurrilous claims of a mountebank. But, the charges of heresy and immorality in the Order were too juicy not to spread. Spread they did, though most people dismissed them as absurd. The Pope brought these charges up with de Molay now as they waited for De Villaret to arrive. He wanted to see what the Templar leader would say.  You see, Pope Clement was beholden to France's King Philip IV and knew the king was in deep debt to the Templars for loans he'd taken out to fund a military campaign against the English. Seeing an opening in de Molay's reply to the charges, Clement invited Philip to use his resources in investigating the claims made against the Templars.France's aging King Philip IV desperately wanted the rumor of vast Templar treasure to be true. That desire morphed into a convinced belief the Templars were sitting on a secret hoard of piles of gold and precious gems. Keeping it secret could mean only one thing; they planned to use it for nefarious purposes. And what could be more nefarious than overthrowing the crown and taking up the rule of France? After all, the Templars were a well-organized fighting force, and had been dispossessed as rulers in the Middle East. Being a royal and having tasted power, Philip projected his own political avarice onto the Templars and assumed they'd hatched a conspiracy to take over. It was just a matter of time. So he decide to strike first and pressed the Pope to initiated heresy charges against them. He was more than happy to provide the muscle to investigate the claims. But this was at a time when a charge of heresy, while damning, was also coming more frequently and didn't have the same shock value it once did.  So Phil doubled down and added to the charge of heresy, the accusation the Templars practiced gross immorality. Particularly damning at that time was the charge of rampant homosexuality. The Templars had no means by which to refute the charges. Being a rather secretive organization, they had no public relations program or propagandists to counter Philip's charges. What sealed their doom was Philip's clever manipulation of Pope Clement V, who at that, time ruled from the French city of Avignon, to assign the Inquisition to investigate the charges. In Oct of 1307, on Friday the 13th  Philip ordered the Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay and dozens of Templars arrested. Templars were accused of blasphemous initiation rites in which recruits spat on the Cross, denied Christ, and engaged in sodomy. They were charged with financial corruption, fraud, and conspiracy. As the Inquisition went to work, they secured numerous confessions substantiating the charges. Then it became known torture was being liberally applied. Commoners, shocked at the initial reports and admission of Templar wickedness, quickly turned against the Inquisitors when their methods for securing confessions became known. But public opinion had little impact of either King or Pope. Yielding to Philip's pressure, Clement issued a papal bull just a month after De Molay's arrest instructing all European rulers to arrest Templars and seize their assets. It seems at this point, Clement had second thoughts & decided to help the Templars if he could. He had the Inquisition stand down and called for a special papal hearing to determine the Templars' guilt or innocence. Now free of torture, most Templars recanted their previous confessions. Philip saw the moment slipping away and in 1310 maneuvered his hand-selected Archbishop into the lead of the investigation. The previous confessions were then used to have dozens of Templars burned at the stake in Paris.Philip threatened to have the Pope removed by force of arms if he didn't go along with his campaign against the Templars, so Clement agreed to disband the Order. At the Council of Vienne in 1312, he issued a papal bull, Vox in excelso, dissolved the Knights Templars. Another bull assigned Templar assets to the Hospitallers, after Philip had a chance to take a health slice on the sly.The elderly Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay, who'd confessed under torture, retracted his confession as did a number of other Templar leaders. But they were all condemned and were burnt at the Stake in Paris in 1314. De Molay was defiant to the end, asking to be tied in such a way he could face the cathedral of Notre Dame, holding his hands in the posture of prayer. It's reported that as the flames rose up around him he called out – “God knows who is wrong and has sinned. Soon a calamity will occur to those who have condemned us to death.” Pope Clement died a month later, and Philip was killed in a hunting accident before year was out.Remaining Templars were arrested and tried but few were convicted.  They were absorbed into either the Hospitallers of Teutonic Knights, or they retired. In 2001, a manuscript dated to 1308 called the Chinon Parchment was discovered in the Vatican Secret Archives by Barbara Frale. It had been filed in the wrong place back in 1628. It's a record of the Templar trial and indicates Pope Clement absolved the Templars of all heresies in 1308 before disbanding the order 4 yrs later.Today the Roman Catholic church regards the persecution of the Templar as unjust and that there was nothing errant in either the Order rule or practice. It regards Pope Clement as having been forced by the machinations of King Philip, who, BTW, was Clement's relative.
