Read transcriptSome magical girl stories are content with sparkly transformations and heartfelt speeches. This is not one of those stories. This time on Play Comics we're warping through the glitter-strewn chaos of Sailor Moon: Another Story, the Super Famicom RPG that took the 90s manga and anime vibes, mashed them with branching timelines and turn-based redemption arcs, and asked, “What if destiny needed a save state?” It's console combat where emotional baggage weighs more than your inventory, and every villain monologue comes with a friendship discount. Chris isn't battling cosmic paradoxes solo though. Cass Proffitt from Distant Echoes jumps into the senshi squad to help unpack how this game balances moon crystal lore with JRPG grind, and whether it's a radiant tribute to Sailor Moon or just the sparkliest timeline meltdown in gaming history. Together they're digging into what survived the trip from Naoko Takeuchi's pages to console controllers, complete with overdramatic plot twists and Jupiter's undefeated punch stat. Dust off your brooch, queue the theme song, and prepare for senshi squad analysis laced with villain rehab debates and moon prism power-ups that hit different on pixelated screens. Learn such things as: Why Another Story might actually be canon. Sort of. Maybe. How localization shaped the Western Sailor Moon fandom. What the point of it all is if you don't even have a cat to help guide you along the way. And so much more! You can find Cass on their podcast Distant Echoes. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. You can read the full thoughts from CountZeroOr here: Why we never got them? Well, I'd probably say it's a combination of a couple factors: First, for much of the 16-bit console generation (and the 8-bit console generation before that), there was still a very considerable anti-Japan bias in terms of marketing of console games, based on the idea that American audiences wouldn't buy anything actively presented as being Japanese, so Anime presentations were out (this is part of the reason why the first Ranma 1/2 fighting game was changed into “Street Combat”) – the Golgo 13 games were viewed as something of an outlier. While some later titles in the 90s would take chances on presenting themselves as being more anime (i.e. Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle), they were also titles for properties generally marketed to guys, as also around this time video game marketing was increasingly getting more gendered, something that would continue throughout the 90s and into the 2000s and beyond. As a property targeted for girls, Sailor Moon didn't fit in the gender essentialist marketing plans of the video game industry. The fact that, since it's a RPG, it also has a ton of text to localize and translate (versus to the Sailor Moon beat-em-ups), certainly didn't help. The next episode is going to be Uncanny X-Men. That's right, we're taking another look at the NES game. What are your experiences with this one? If they remade it today what characters would you want included that weren't in the original? In this episode of the Mushing Podcast, the race has officially concluded, and attention turns to reflection, records, and what this year's Iditarod tells us about the evolution of the sport. With all mushers off the trail, the focus shifts from competition to analysis ahead of the finisher's banquet. One of the key discussions centers around the Red Lantern finish time, comparing this year's final finisher to historical benchmarks. The episode highlights how modern Red Lantern times now rival, or even surpass, those from decades past, underscoring the dramatic advancements in breeding, training, gear, and trail strategy. Listeners also hear a musher profile of Brenda Mackey, whose career represents a deep multi-generational legacy in the sport, and a historical look back at Rick Swenson's record-setting 1981 victory. These comparisons offer a powerful lens into how far the Iditarod has come over the past 40+ years. The episode sets the stage for the finisher's banquet while also inviting listeners to reflect on the race as a whole, from the front runners to the final finisher, and what it means for the future of dog mushing.Support our WorkLike this episode? In this episode, we're joined by the founder of Rising Red Lantern, a collective supporting Asian Migrant Sex Workers here in Victoria. The Rising Red Lantern is a direct response to the violence of raids, racism, isolation, state neglect, and the ongoing injustices experienced by Asian migrant sex workers.Through Rising Red Lantern, community members are building power together in a system that was never designed for them — creating spaces to amplify voices, strengthen cultural connection, share political knowledge and skills, and lead resistance driven by those most impacted. Right now, Rising Red Lantern is raising $60,000 to sustain this work over the next year. The fundraiser will support Vixen's Asian migrant peer frontline responses — where trusted peer workers from within the community provide culturally informed support, resources, and care. The funding will also go toward community events, advocacy campaigns, skill-sharing, and resources for the Victorian Asian migrant sex worker community. This work also honours the lives of Yuqi Luo, Hyun Sook Jeon, and Yuko, whose deaths reflect the broader patterns of injustice, racism, and misogyny that migrant women continue to face. Their lives mattered, their stories matter, and this community continues to organise in their memory. In a world that too often tries to erase migrant voices, Rising Red Lantern is choosing to raise its red lanterns together. If you'd like to support the fundraiser, you can find the donation link below. https://www.vixen.org.au/rising-red-lantern

EPISODE 86 -  “ANNA MAY WONG: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 5/5/2025 Anna May Wong was once the most famous Chinese woman in the world. The trailblazing actress, philanthropist, and fashion icon appeared in over 60 films and was a celebrated star, yet, at the time, she was not allowed to kiss a Caucasian man on screen, which limited the roles she could take, and she was not allowed to buy a house in Beverly Hills. A strange dichotomy, indeed. In recent years, she has enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence. Known as a Trailblazer and a cultural icon, she paved the way for generations of Asian and Asian American actors by proving that talent and perseverance could transcend racist casting conventions. Her life and career continue to influence conversations about diversity, representation, and the politics of race in Hollywood. This week, she is our Star of the Month. We learned all about Peru with Robert Bradley at 01:46:25 of the episode talking about his new book ‘Eating Peru: A Gastronomic Journey' from University of Oklahoma Press. Journeying from coasts to highlands and back again, the intrepid author introduces us to the most interesting aspects of Peruvian cuisine that he encounters along the way, with several recipes included. Bradley sizzles about Peruvian ceviche, pisco and the pisco sour, and the country's best restaurants—two ranked in the top ten by The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023. He does this all while sampling food lore, Andean anthropology, history, linguistics, and the pleasures and perils of travel within Peru. Last, but certainly not least we talked to Keith Krem C.O.O. of AFP Industries/KLYR Rum LLC at 02:10:15 of the episode. At twelve times distilled and filtered eighteen times, KLYR is an innovative, fresh take on rum that speaks to American ingenuity. KLYR Rum has zero grams of sugar and zero grams of carbohydrates, and it's lower in calories than other, more sugary rums. Every sip of KLYR Rum is the finest of flavors. Be sure to head out to Delco this weekend as KLYR will be a part of The 13th Annual Shamrock and Roll Pub Crawl on Saturday, March 2nd beginning at 2pm. We keep gaming as we tackle a bunch of small games in a classic grab bag and talk through a whole mess of games that are interesting and worthwhile but often have one or two extremely obvious parts that hold it back. Some of them are reasonable critiques, some of them are just the unfortunate realities of game production, some are just The Times. [School of Everything Else 2023] This is the good stuff. Look no further than the 2012-2013 one-season 3D animated show for the absolute best Green Lantern experience. Co-Created Giancarlo Volpe of Avatar and Bruce Timm, one of the key figures in the beloved and critically acclaimed classics of Batman: The Animated Series, along with the connected Superman, Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited, all of which constitute a true encapsulation of the DC comic heroes. What we have here is the archival spoiler-free section from our 2013 Digital Gonzo episode talking about this fantastic cartoon. That is then followed by a 90-minute, spoilerific contemporary discussion about what happens to the various characters. This series is so unappreciated that we actively recommend you listening to this whole thing. It's the NOBODY watching it that's the real spoiler. Hal Jordan (Earth's GL lost in space with this tiny crew) Razer (A disgraced Red Lantern trying to make amends)  Aya (The prototype ship's computer, learning everything about the universe) Kilowog (A Bolovaxian GL, big, blunt and kind-hearted) Many thanks to our guests, both old and new.  Guests: Toby Jungius @TJungius of Through the Wind Door Matt Ramsey of GamerDork Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst Alex Eding of Plaid Hat Games

He wrote the music for The Red Lantern, a narrative survival dog-sledding adventure, with warm, relaxing music to counter the cold landscape. Hrishikesh describes his music as "secular Christmas," and that is such a fantastic description; his music is a weighted blanket with hot chocolate while you listen to a favorite album during a winter storm. And if you like the soundtrack, you'll love his solo music. He used to record as The One AM Radio but now releases under his name. Much of his music is on Bandcamp, but you can find his music in the usual streaming spots too. You can support Level with Emily on Patreon. Join us on Discord for free.
