Another bonus series coming at you! Tenchi Muyo and all its sequels and spinoffs are a 90s and 2000s fan favorite and we felt like revisiting it. This first episode is all about us sharing our history with the franchise and what it's all about, but the REAL meat of the episode is an interview Randy and Ken got to have with Petrea Burchard, the voice actress of badass space pirate and best girl Ryoko Hakubi, where we got to talk about her experience embodying the character, her journey as an actor, writer, and so much more. And look forward to our next bonus Tenchi episode where we watch and discuss Tenchi Muyo! “Finish line. All the vibes at the finish line, whether it's tears or laughter or appreciation, you cannot replicate that feeling. Whether you're the runner or you're the race director.” - Jodi McNeillJodi McNeill and Norm Nadon have been running for a long time and they've had the sport be an even bigger part of their lives than most, having run a retail shop for a while. The one constant love in the sport they both share is the love of community. The opportunity to share that with others and grow their own is one they both embrace as the hosts of the Gotta Run Racing Podcast. The podcast was something that was on their radar for quite some time, and all it took was the pandemic to kick it into gear.“The funny thing is that I always wanted to do a podcast even before we sold our store, and I bought all the equipment, I threw it in the closet, and that's where it was for a year. And then the pandemic, we sold our store and I said, okay, now's the time. And thanks to YouTube, how do you edit? How do you produce? How do you market? I learned on YouTube. And yeah, that's how it came to the podcast today.” - Norm NadonJodi and Norm were kind enough to have me on their show as well, which you can find here! Make sure to listen to both shows and let us know what you think. I had a blast learning more about them and I equally enjoyed getting the chance to share some more about myself on the Gotta Run Podcast. The Trail Running Film Festival is coming to JasperThe Trail Running Film Festival is back, and we are hosting 6 shows this year! I'm incredibly excited to be returning to Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Canmore, and Crowsnest Pass. And we've just nailed down our 6th show, the one we've been hinting at, as we're headed to Jasper in 2025! It will be a fundraiser show to help recover from the terrible wildfires earlier in 2024. We're so pumped to be working with Jasper Community Habitat for the Arts to bring the festival to Jasper. All proceeds from this specific show will be split between the Habitat for the Arts and the Jasper Volunteer Fire Brigade. We saw the Run for Jasper had raised funds for the brigade through that event and thought it was a great idea. A massive thank you to Mathias, Amanda, and everyone else at the Trail Running Film Festival for donating the license for this show. It truly will be every dollar raised going back into the community. Tickets are on sale now and if you can't make it but want to donate, we have a donation option on the site as we'd love to raise as much as we can for these Jasper groups. It's an iconic Canadian outdoor space and the Trail Running Film Festival seems like a great fit and way to help the revival of that great community. I can't wait to hang out with you all again, celebrate our amazing sport, and grow this festival to provide an even more fun and entertaining evening for everyone involved. Our early bird tickets are on sale now for the newly announced Jasper show, as well as Vancouver at the Rio, Edmonton at the Garneau, and Crowsnest Pass at Frank Slide. They are $25 and will go up to $30 on January 1, and they will be $35 at the door. So you might as well save a few bucks while you can. We are so damn excited to have 5 Peaks and the Stoked Scramble/Stoked Ultra back as our Platinum sponsor this year. They have been incredible to work with as they are so supportive and so encouraging and have been since day 1. They love this event as much as we do and we're super grateful to Jacob Puzey for all the support. They give us so many goodies to give away as well, it means the world to us!We also have Black Lung Ultra from Nordegg, AB coming on as a sponsor for our tour. Last year they got involved with our Alberta shows and had so much fun they are getting even more involved this year! Their race sold out in its inaugural year back in September, and we're pumped to help them sell out again in 2025! A massive thank you to Petrea, Nick, Michael, and Brandon for their constant encouragement and support. We will likely announce some more sponsors in the coming weeks, we'll have guests to announce, and we're working on fun acts like the surprise burlesque opening act we had in Vancouver in 2024. We want to lean into the word “festival” and do that by including local artists and performers, so we can continue to spotlight our amazing communities. I'm so pumped to be working with Jeannine Avelino again on all of this. She's such an incredible community member and human being and I'm lucky to have her involved. And of course, my wife Sheena is always helping and finding ways to add value to our shows. I'm grateful to her. We have a small but mighty team and we plan on showing what we can do to make 2025 your favourite year yet! Get your tickets now.The Miller Minutes #2This was our second meeting and I had a bit of a struggle this month as a storm blew snow in for nearly a week straight. In this episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and https://www.socialmediology.com.au/ (Social Mediology) founder Kate vanderVoort chats with Petrea King who is CEO of the Quest for Life Foundation which she established in 1989. She is a well-known author, inspirational keynote speaker, teacher and facilitator. She is also qualified as a naturopath, herbalist, clinical hypnotherapist, yoga and meditation teacher. About Petrea More than 125,000 people have attended residential programs or counselling with Petrea and her team since 1985.  Petrea has been a regular guest on ABC Radio Sydney for almost 20 years – on Richard Glover's Mid-Week Conference and Nightlife. In 2003 she was celebrated on Channel 9's This Is Your Life and has been featured on Australian Story, Compass and many other television productions. An acclaimed documentary was jointly commissioned by Channel 4 (UK) and the ABC called Quest for Life – A Year in the Life of Petrea King in 1990. She has received the Advance Australia Award, Citizen of the Year and the Centenary Medal for her contribution to the community and has been nominated for Australian of the year each year since 2003 as well as being a NSW finalist for Senior Australian of the Year in 2011. Petrea sees crisis as a catalyst for personal growth and understanding and as an opportunity for healing and peace. BIG IDEA 1 “Shared experiences create deep and everlasting bonds” (19:26) Whilst many deep and everlasting friendships are created at the residential programs, the Quest for Life Foundation also uses Facebook to interact and connect with members of their community. This involves regular posts and live events that allow people to be involved and grow within the community. The use of Facebook allows for members to tune in to live mini workshops with the facilitators or the weekly meditation group with Petrea.  BIG IDEA 2 “Technology impacts human connection in a positive way” (24:10) Quest are always looking for new ways to interact with their community, even if it is to have a little chat every now and again or to be there a critical moment in someone's life. Through the use of technology, past participants and those who can't attend programs, can keep engaged, build and maintain a strong relationship with each other and the origanisation. BIG IDEA 3 “What matters is your intention, be very clear about what your intention is and then show up” (33:47) Petrea says when building a community on social media, it is essential to be clear your intentions and if you make a commitment, follow through. You need to have good vibration. If you pour yourself into that, you're pouring yourself into that energy field and it will begin to resonate for those that need it. Another key piece of advice Petrea gives is to establish good time management. Make sure you divide your time well, turn up 100% and give it your focus and attention rather than being half-hearted about anything. Christmas. It’s often talked about as the most wonderful time of the year. But at the end of an unspeakable year, it feels like we are all crawling to the finish line that is Christmas in 2020.  And for a lot of us, it’s filled with a feeling of grief. Grief for a year we didn’t have. Grief for family we can’t see. And grief for those we lost.  Two years ago I sat down with grief counselor Petrea King to talk about how to face Christmas when life is not as you know it.  She’s counselled over 120,000 people who are living with cancer and other life-challenging illnesses, or dealing with grief, loss, trauma and tragedy through her foundation, Quest For Life.  And because this year has really been life as we don’t know it, I thought it was time to talk to Petrea again. About grief. And about lowering the bar this Christmas. Because it’s okay not to be okay.  Here’s Petrea. The words from this meditation have been drawn from Petrea King's two Episodes and provide wonderful stimulation for personal reflection. There will be an invitation to reflect on four of Petrea's inspired quotes. You may like to draw on a journal during this time of stillness or you may reflect on these quotes internally. It is an opportunity to be authentic and to name those experiences that challenge us and the practices that sustain us. This time is treasured time and provides a space for us to hear the still small voice within, the voice of God. “The joy of meditation is that the brain becomes quiet. When the brain is in the present moment we have access to all those things that are first nature to us...insight, intuition, wisdom, humour, spontaneity, creativity and compassion. Those qualities are all available to us if we train our brain to be of service to us, rather than run the show.” Petrea King

The COVID-19 pandemic had witnessed a mass migration to online learning, with some Australian universities being more experienced at it than other, Campus Review spoke to Associate Professor Petrea Redmond of the University of Southern Queensland(USQ), and a member of the Australian Association of Research in Education. The expert in online learning said that, while “there has been much talking about technology... educators need to consider equally the teaching methods being deployed." During the podcast Redmond, who has been teaching online at USQ since 2000, said educators have been "thrown into this new environment "and it's understandable if lessons don't work out as well as intended." She said there have been a host of success stories, as well as times when things didn't go to plan. The trick, she says is "We need to be forgiving of each other." In essence, Redmond does not believe there is any difference is the quality of online versus face-to-face education; "it all comes down to context," she says. However, Redmond also contends that some students may be struggling trying to study from home, finding the lines of work, study and life difficult to demarcate. "Finding a commitment to learning learning is a bit more difficult now," she said. Finally, she concluded that a key challenge facing both universities and students is availability, on a personal level. "The biggest challenge at the moment is to demonstrate that you are available for your students," she said.

Petrea:             When I was nursing.  When I was 17, I went into nursing and so I nursed a lot of people with cancer at that time.  Also, before I went into nursing, it's a much longer story, but I'd grown very quickly 23cm in one year and my knees had started dislocating when I was 13.  I spent three years in hospital having my femurs cut and my lower legs turned out and my tibias cut, and my lower legs turned in.  In those days, they'd just invented portable x-ray machines, and because my bones wouldn't unite, they sometimes x-rayed me two or three times per week.  I think in hindsight, that might have been the reason why I developed cancer then in my 30s. Joe:                 Wow, what was that like? Petrea:             Which bit, being in hospital for three years? Joe:                 Well, being in hospital for three years and then getting cancer in your 30s? Petrea:             Well, when I was diagnosed, I knew something was wrong because I was covered in bruises.  I would bruise very easily.  I went to my doctor who referred me to another one.  When I had all of the blood tests, I was actually living in California at the time.  When I had all the blood tests, it came back as my white blood cell counts were completely skewed.  Then I had bone marrow biopsies and finally, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in September of 1983.  I was told that I wouldn't see Christmas of that year.  My brother had just taken his life, as well, so it was a very painful time for our family.  I have to say, I didn't feel like I fought for my life.  I'm a little bit against this idea of battles and fighting the disease and people lose their battle with cancer.  I just don't think that's helpful.  We use such a warm mentality and yet, this is something within our own body.  Being at war with a part of your body doesn't sit well with me. Joe:                 That's such a great perspective, Petrea.  How did you see it?  How did you react when you found out and how did you deal with it?  That it wasn't that and it was a part of you?  How did you approach it all? Petrea:             Well, those three years in hospital as a teenager had given me a lot of time to focus on the deeper questions about existence that I was already preoccupied with.  Why are we here?  What's the purpose of human life?  How do you know you've lived a good life?  Like a lot of people, I had a split façade where I had a highly polished one for everybody outside but had a very private inner life.  I'd also grown up with my mad, chaotic brother who was the one who did finally take his life.  He told me before he was ten that he knew that he had to take his own life by the time he was 30. That's when I remember thinking, “I have to grow up really quickly, so I can look after Brendan.” That finally gave me a sense of why I was alive.

Petra has overcome cancer, endless months of hospitalisation for misaligned legs, a divorce, childhood trauma, the suicide of her brother and the challenges that come with building a business, and yet she knows no boundaries and has taken each challenge head-on. It's Christmas Eve and to get you in the right frame of mind for the big day, we have hooked up with the Director of "Quest for Life" Petrea King, for an insight into the real meaning of Christmas. Petrea has counselled individually or through residential programs tens of thousands of people living with cancer and other life-challenging illnesses, grief, loss, trauma and tragedy. She is at the forefront of wellness education and is a frequent lecturer at medical and other conferences. Petrea sees crisis as a catalyst for personal growth and understanding and as an opportunity for healing and peace.   Forget the sales, forget the pressure of finding "the perfect gift", just take in what the Christmas season is all about: family, sharing and that feeling of belonging.   We hope it inspires you to immerse yourself in the true essence of Christmas.   Thanks everyone for a great year! We have had a ball interviewing a wide range of people who we hope have added a little something to every aspect of your world - to help you get your Mojo working and achieve a better life.   Merry Christmas and a Happy Mojo Year in 2017.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
