Good Sunday to you,Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in around 1400, and it is considered one of the first great works of English literature.Try reading it today and you might question the “English” part. Here're the opening lines:Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,The droghte of March hath perced to the roote,It does not get much easier.Canterbury Tales is the story of group of pilgrims who walk from Southwark to Canterbury Cathedral. I have done the pilgrimage myself and I would urge you to as well. The structure is quite simple. To pass the time, the pilgrims have to a storytelling contest and so each tells his or her tale. There are around thirty pilgrims - in effect, thirty professions, and so we get the Knight's Tale, the Miller's Tale, the Wife of Bath's Tale and so on.Here is the interesting part. Since the story was written in 1400 we have had, off the top of my head, the printing press, the Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, steam power, fossil fuels, the internal combustion engine, electricity, aviation, nuclear power, computers, the internet, smartphones and now artificial intelligence. And yet, if you look the list of characters below, every single one of Chaucer's professions still exists in some recognisable form today. You could go all the way back to the dawn of civilisation and argue the same thing. We still have farmers. We still have merchants. We still have lawyers, doctors, religious people, soldiers, landlords, craftsmen, entertainers, administrators and hustlers.AI will change the nature of the job, but it will not erase the underlying human needs that created it.Machines put many farm labourers out of work at the turn of the 19th century, but they also generated enormous productivity, which created new industries and new jobs, and, it's worth noting, productivity which enabled us to be able to ban slavery. The net result was not mass permanent unemployment but rising prosperity. What Actually ChangesWhat does get destroyed is power structure.Feudalism has gone. The Church no longer dominates European politics - not the Christian Church, anyway. Guilds have faded. The landed aristocracy has all but gone. In their place we have the modern State, bureaucracy, multinational banks, global corporations, Big Tech, Big Pharma, the mainstream media and so on.AI is more likely to erode existing hierarchies than to eliminate work altogether. It will compress middle layers. It will reduce friction. It will concentrate power in some places and decentralise it in others. If you live in a third world country such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The pound will be further devalued, as will the euro and dollar. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. More here. The winners are likely to include: platforms, energy producers, owners of scare assets, large scale infrastructure, those who control distribution. AI is already being used in manufacturing, agriculture and mining, but so much to replace jobs as to increase productivity. You can't help feeling the physical economy is a better place to be than parts of the digital - at least for now, though I guess robots are next if those Chinese videos doing the rounds are anything to go by.Who else wins? AI and machine learning engineers, obviously, certain content creators, those who get good at prompting will find it useful for anything from medicine to plumbing to consultancy. The losers will be among those whose job is mainly to control access to or verify information that AI can now do instantly. Think: interpreters and translators, proofreaders and editors, coders, copywriters and journalists, graphic designers, sales reps, basic financial advisors. I think long-distance drivers' days are numbered too.The work doesn't disappear but the pricing power and margins collapse.Legacy media distribution - not the content creators themselves, but the distribution gatekeepers who controlled which creators reached audiences. Publishers who mainly performed filtering rather than editing, talent agencies for routine work, certain music labels. The job may technically exist but the power and economics drain away.Chaucer's Cast, ModernisedFinally, below is Chaucer's professional cross-section of medieval England. Love in Literature and Pop Culture: How Stories Shaped the Holiday. The narrative of Valentine's Day extends beyond historical records, finding expression in literature, film, and popular music. The transformation of the holiday from a religious observance to a celebration of romance was a deliberate cultural development, shaped by the creative efforts of writers and artists over centuries. Literature and popular culture have not merely reflected the holiday's significance; they have actively constructed and disseminated its meanings, converting a specialized observance into a widely recognized romantic tradition. The expectations, symbols, and conventions associated with Valentine's Day are products of this ongoing process of cultural storytelling. A pivotal moment in the evolution of Valentine's Day occurred in the late Middle Ages with Geoffrey Chaucer's 1382 poem "Parliament of Fowls," in which he creatively associated the feast day with the mating of birds: "For this was on seynt Valentynes day, / Whan every foul cometh there to chese his make." This literary innovation established a connection between the holiday and courtly love. Subsequently, William Shakespeare reinforced the romantic connotations of the day in "Hamlet," where Ophelia's lament—"Tomorrow is Saint Valentine's day, / All in the morning betime, / And I a maid at your window, / To be your Valentine"—further embedded the association with romantic love in the cultural imagination. These contributions by prominent literary figures facilitated the holiday's transition from a religious to a romantic observance.Read the full content hereMore Podcasts HereProduced by SimVal Media Group, USA

S3E97 Iconic Edinburgh poet Robert Fergusson is the subject of today's podcast, as Ash looks at his breakthrough poem, 'The Daft Days': Now mirk December's dowie face Glowrs owr the rigs wi sour grimace, While, thro' his minimum of space, The bleer-ey'd sun, Wi blinkin light and stealing pace, His race doth run. From naked groves nae birdie sings, To shepherd's pipe nae hillock rings, The breeze nae od'rous flavour brings From Borean cave, And dwyning nature droops her wings, Wi visage grave. Mankind but scanty pleasure glean Frae snawy hill or barren plain, Whan winter, ‘midst his nipping train, Wi frozen spear, Sends drift owr a' his bleak domain, And guides the weir. Auld Reikie! thou'rt the canty hole, A bield for many caldrife soul, Wha snugly at thine ingle loll, Baith warm and couth, While round they gar the bicker roll To weet their mouth. When merry Yule-day comes, I trou, You'll scantlins find a hungry mou; Sma are our cares, our stamacks fou O' gusty gear, And kickshaws, strangers to our view, Sin fairn-year. Ye browster wives, now busk ye braw, And fling your sorrows far awa; Then come and gie's the tither blaw Of reaming ale, Mair precious than the well of Spa, Our hearts to heal. Then, tho' at odds wi a' the warl', Amang oursels we'll never quarrel; Tho' Discord gie a canker'd snarl To spoil our glee, As lang's there's pith into the barrel We'll drink and ‘gree. Fidlers, your pins in temper fix, And roset weel your fiddle-sticks; But banish vile Italian tricks Frae out your quorum, Not fortes wi pianos mix – Gie's Tulloch Gorum. For nought can cheer the heart sae weel As can a canty Highland reel; It even vivifies the heel To skip and dance: Lifeless is he wha canna feel Its influence. Let mirth abound, let social cheer Invest the dawning of the year; Let blithesome innocence appear To crown our joy; Nor envy wi sarcastic sneer Our bliss destroy. And thou, great god of Aqua Vitae! Wha sways the empire of this city, When fou we're sometimes capernoity, Be thou prepar'd To hedge us frae that black banditti, The City Guard. Title Music: 'Not Drunk' by The Joy Drops. Shanna Whan is the rural woman, founder, CEO, and face behind Sober in the Country, a nationally respected grassroots not-for-profit, shifting the entire conversation around booze in the bush. Motherhood is also something we touch on, and it's very difficult for Shan to talk about. She's always wanted to become a mum - but never got the chance. The golf world took sides earlier this month when the USGA and R&A announced their plans to reign in distance with a rollback of the golf ball for both professionals and amateurs starting in 2028. The data presented by the governing bodies includes statistics claiming that high club-head speed players will lose up to 10 yards with the new ball restrictions, while shorter hitters will only see a 3-5 yard difference. So why the rule change? Why now? What happened to bifurcation? What about course setups, sustainability and green speeds? How is all of this good for the game? Tom Coyne brings all of these questions to USGA headquarters where he sits down with its CEO Mike Whan. In a candid conversation including questions submitted by TGJ members, Coyne and Whan attempt to find common ground on one of the game's most heated subjects. In this podcast, we discuss how Taoist principles relate to our personal addiction recovery journey. The Master leads by emptying people's minds and filling their cores, by weakening their ambition and toughening their resolve. He helps people lose everything they know, everything they desire, and creates confusion in those who think that they know. In this episode, Cheddy and Michelle discuss: Small wins as steps to greater goals Visualizing yourself winning like an athlete. What is a small win? Recognizing other people's wins Key takeaways: Schedule time to celebrate one small win per day. The more you take time to celebrate small wins, the more you'll recognize the opportunities to win. Celebrating other people's small wins is infectious A small win today can be totally different than a small win tomorrow. Don't compare your win to other's wins and don't compare your own current win to your past wins. “Consider the things in your life that you may think are mundane and routine -but those are actually wins. Whan you accomplish something that you set out to do, that's a win! when you do something that's hard and you complete it, that's a win!” -Cheddy Matthews Website: www.WinningInside.io Michelle: www.WickmanWellness.com Cheddy: www.CheddyMatthews.com Email: WinningInsidePodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @winning_inside Facebook: @WinningInside LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/winninginside YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoF6Rtked9jTNVdaVmARl6g
Breathwork and meditation have become repopularized in many health circles in the past decade and for good reason. We have both been huge proponents of the power of the breath and were excited to have Jake Whan on to take a deep dive into the world of breath work and mindfulness. In our conversation with Jake, we discussed his path towards breathwork and meditation. As a high-level collegiate athlete, physical fitness and nutrition always played a key role in Jake's life, however, it wasn't until Jake found breathwork that he realized health was much more than diet and weightlifting. We also spent time exploring the important topic of nutrition and what so many people seem to get wrong when it comes to diet. If you are interested in learning more about the healing powers of breathwork, this will be a great place for you to start! (5/16/22) Markets put in a big bottom last week--at least for the short term. Even though markets finished down for the day on Thursday, they rallied back above the open, setting up a green candle, and establishing a test of the level at three standard-deviations from the 50-DMA. Friday's subsequent rally pushed the index up to within two standard-deviations from the 50-DMA, and got close to triggering a money flow buy signal in a market that was still very over-sold. Establishment of this bottom now prepares the market for a rally up to the 20-DMA, currently on the SPY at 416-418. That level is the top of the current downtrend line, around 430 on the S&P. All of the elements are in place to create a rally back up to higher levels. Whan that happens, use this as an opportunity to reduce risk and rebalance portfolios. Getting sober in rural environments presents its own unique challenges. In this episode, Veronica interviews Shanna Whan founder of Sober in the Country a charity that helps people in rural places to stop drinking. Driven by desperation Shanna saw there was simply no support for people in rural Australia so she set about creating her own. Australian woman Shanna Whan is the pioneer of change in the bush when it comes to our love affair with booze. The founder and CEO behind national bush charity Sober in the Country spent 15,000 hours going against the grain to ''be the change'' and now her advocacy, raw and often irreverently funny conversations have seen the life-saving message that it's ''OK2SAYNO'' (to beers in the bush) go national and international. Shanna was recognised formally in 2021 by her peers and the public as a ProBono Australia winner in the ''Impact 25'' awards. Shanna Whan is a rural woman and in her own words a ''very unlikely'' national spokesperson for change when it comes to the complex subject of our great love affair with booze in the bush. The founder behind now nationally recognised brand and not-for-profit Sober in the Country Ltd (SITC) created the 'OK2SAYNO' campaign to ensure we are putting our mates and their health first. Far from being an anti-alcohol message; SITC is simply focused on advocacy, awareness, and ensuring those who choose to say 'no thanks' or 'not today' (no matter their reason) are supported fully. After almost losing her own life to alcohol addiction in 2015 and spending seven years of working tirelessly to support others she is now regularly referred to as a pioneer who cracked the lid on this yarn in the remote sector of Australia. Shan is not someone you'll ever find accepting labels like 'influencer,' or 'guru' spoken over her, though. She stands extremely firm on insisting she's just one of (too) many in the bush fighting a battle - sometimes for survival - without help, education, information, or even any appropriate support. So she said she simply decided to make it her life's work to change that. These days she is using her national media profile to boldly fight for us on a national level and to challenge our leaders to open their eyes, look west, and to see that for remote Australians, ''ISO'' is our reality. In country Australia, nobody is talking about alcohol abuse. But Shanna Whan is. There’s no one better qualified to do so than a girl from the country who nearly died in front of her community from alcohol abuse. Shanna was a journalist and rural photographer by day and an alcoholic by night - her relationship with booze tangled in trauma and fuelled by a socially acceptable and glorified national pastime. On the precipice of turning forty, Shanna would survive a series of blows that would change her life forever. This is the story of one woman’s battle with the bottle; how she overcame the guilt and grief she felt when she and her husband were told they wouldn’t have children, what life’s like on the fringes of society as a childless and sober woman in a rural community, and what happens when your road to recovery leads to the birth of a national charity. So, what happens when you stop drinking and start speaking your truth? We find out in FORTY.
