The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is proud to announce the successful completion of the Enhancing Health Infrastructure and Resilience Project in Saint Lucia, making the country the first OECS Member State to fully implement the regional initiative. This accomplishment is part of a US $3 million project funded by Direct Relief, a California-based nonprofit organization, and executed in collaboration with the OECS Commission. The donation of vital medical equipment under this initiative addresses critical gaps in the country's health infrastructure, especially as Saint Lucia and the wider region continue to recover from disasters such as Hurricane Beryl in 2024 and the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These enhancements are not only about immediate emergency readiness, but also about building sustainable systems capable of withstanding future crises. The newly donated equipment, including oxygen concentrators, comes at a critical time when public health systems must be agile and responsive.
In the headlines: The Ministry of Health expands its capacity to fight metabolic diseases and; Saint Lucia becomes the first OECS state to implement the Enhancing Health Infrastructure and Resilience Project. For details on these stories and more, visit www.govt.lc

With special guest: Hugh van Cuylenburg… in conversation with Bill Kable When Hugh van Cuylenburg went to India as a volunteer teacher he did not expect to be on the receiving end of the learning process. At first reluctant to even be in India he soon found that he was learning from his students how to develop the psychological foundation for success in all educational and physical pursuits. Hugh’s trip finished up being full of surprises. He was surrounded by so much poverty yet there was also happiness and contentment. Working on his observations Hugh was able to develop The Resilience Project for application in Australia and backed up his approach with technical qualifications obtained by completing a Master’s Degree at University. In Australia many school children are anxious and depressed. They spend too much time looking at their mobile phones and other devices. Individual sports people such as some of our leading cricketers are needing to take time off to improve their mental health and sporting teams have earned a reputation for misbehaving when they seem to have everything presented on a platter. So if something is going wrong here what can be done. Podcast (mp3)

Dis episode is a little bit different, but if you're as obsessed with Hugh van Cuylenburg as we are, we think you'll enjoy it. The Resilience Project (TRP) is the company that Hugh started building 12 years ago. Today, it delivers evidence-based, wellbeing programs to over 1000 schools in Australia, as well as countless work-places and helps provide people with strategies to build resilience too!Hugh always knew that TRP would be something special, but god, it took a lot of hard work (and some might say resilience) to get it to where it is now. From the first spark of inspiration, to the make-or-break scene straight from a movie, Hugh gets pretty vulnerable with Ryan and Josh about all the ways he failed on the road to success. So grab your glitter pens, rule up your calendar, and pencil in dis super special episode.
Joining us on Say Hi to the Future: Ingenious Thinkers hosted by Ken Tencer today is Katie Hodgetts, Climate Activator, Speaker, and Founder of The Resilience Project.
Your values are perfect - according to our resident psychologist Dr. Emily Musgrove. Although this sounds counter intuitive to what we usually say…it's actually a beautiful place to start. Figuring out what your values are, and where they come from can be a pretty intense experience. Lucky we have Dr Em to help, breaking down why they are important and how they can add purpose to your life. As she explains, our values work like a compass, and when used responsibly, can point us in the direction of the person we want to be. Links mentioned in the episode:

How much worse could it have been? I don't want to speak too soon. A refloating mission is underway. But from what we know at this stage, KiwiRail, the Interislander, and New Zealand might have just escaped a much, much more serious disaster. The Aratere ferry departed Picton last night and from what we understand about the timeline, almost immediately lost steering. Within fifteen minutes it had run aground. There are 47 people onboard. Most of them are crew. All of them are in lifejackets. Most importantly, all of them are safe. And for now, at least the ferry is watertight. We wait for high tide and the impending rescue operation. It's bad. But again, my reaction is strangely one of tempered relief, in that we may have just dodged a far greater disaster. Imagine if the ferry had lost steering further out in the Sounds and run aground late at night. Imagine if it hadn't been perfectly still and calm. Imagine if it was full of passengers —school holidays— kids. Imagine if it hadn't stayed watertight. Imagine if it got into trouble at a vital point in Cook Straight entering Wellington Harbour. There are surely moments on the journey where even if alarm was raised, emergency vessels and tugboats might not have the time to scramble and save the stricken ship. We could be waking this morning to news of a maritime disaster in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand that made the Rena look like nothing. And most importantly, of course, people could've died. The state and the future of the ferries has been a political football. The previous government signed a fixed-price contract to build two new ferries. But after the Inter-island Resilience Project exploded in its projected costs, the new government declined KiwiRail's request for extra funding. In parliament, as recently as a few days ago, Transport Minister Simeon Brown was highly critical of KiwiRail's maintenance of the current fleet. But last night's event will obviously bring all of this into sharp focus. Is this an event that will justify new vessels and the new port infrastructure, after all? Let's hope the ferry and her passengers can be safely refloated. But clearly the status quo is unsustainable. And just because we may have avoided the absolute worst this occasion, doesn't mean the next time won't be different. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Michael Denehey talks with Laura Hindson from Madame Tiger. Laura shares insights on building a strong brand, balancing work and family, and fostering a sustainable company culture. With her business generating significant revenue and a growing team, she emphasizes the importance of hiring passionate people and leveraging a robust support network for success. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Michael delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Laura Hindson believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is that "every problem is my problem." This encapsulates the challenge of being a business owner, where the responsibility for solving all issues ultimately falls on the owner's shoulders. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Laura Hindson's favorite business book that has helped her the most is "How to Build a Billion Dollar Business" by Radek Sali. She found it incredibly helpful for its honest perspective on the highs and lows of building a successful business. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Laura Hindson recommends "The Imperfects Podcast" by Hugh van Cuylenburg, known for The Resilience Project. While not strictly business-related, Hindson finds its focus on resilience valuable for small business owners, as resilience is crucial when facing challenges in entrepreneurship. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Laura Hindson recommends two essential tools for small businesses: Xero and Shopify. “Get your butterflies in formation”. If you take one thing away from this episode, it's how to handle the nervous, anxious, flutter of stomach butterflies that arises when we're socially anxious. Social interactions can be challenging. You may believe that everyone else has all their shit figured out and can effortlessly walk into a social situation and just be themselves. But it turns out, we all, at some point, get social anxiety. In this episode, our resident psychologist Dr Emily, delves deeper into what it means to experience social anxiety, before during & after a social situation. She explores the ways in which anxiety shows up, where it might come from and what we can do to “get our butterflies in formation”. Former teacher and assistant principal, current powerhouse of enthusiasm and expertise, Martin Heppell, or just Rac as he is known to friends, blows Hame away in this episode. Yes, there are some crazy stories, but also some amazing insights that can only be gained from spending thousands of hours helping kids to be their best. Oh, and having 3 kids of his own. Rac comes to How Other Dads Dad care of The Resilience Project where he is one of the key facilitators, working with thousands of kids every year. He has also appeared on the wonderful podcast, The Imperfects, and it was Imperfects Co-Host Hugh van Cuylenburg who said to Hame - “You gotta get Rac on HODD!” Thank goodness we did. Apart from some wild tales about growing up in Borneo that taught Rac some lifelong lessons, he chats about building trust with our kids in order to foster a super robust connection, which hopefully means when times get tricky they can tell you anything and everything. He also talks really practically about kids pushing through difficult moments, and how as a parent you can support them through this. It's practical. It's informed. It's bloody useful stuff and Rac delivers it all with such humility and honesty. And he finishes with one of the all time great dadding stories! Thanks to Rac for wearing his heart on his sleeve, sharing his wisdom and sacrificing all dignity for a good story! You can hear more of Rac HERE on The Imperfects. And, a big thanks to our very good friends at Hertz who through their support are making season 2 of How Other Dads Dad possible. Hugh Van Cuylenburg was not having a great time, to say the least. He was already unpopular with his then-pregnant wife for being out of town while she and their children all had COVID (and fair enough, he says!), when a previously minor medical problem unexpectedly became very serious. After some painful injections, he managed to get on stage for a speaking engagement, only to finish his presentation suddenly feeling ill. So, when he finally sat down for a podcast interview with someone he barely knew, and she asked how he was doing, he said he'd been better. After launching into the story for a good twenty minutes, Hugh realised his vulnerability was having an unexpected effect: his guest could relate, and she shared her own similarly vulnerable experiences, and their rapport developed at lightning speed. Hugh teaches you how to use your low moments for high impact when trying to build a connection with other people, both at work and beyond. This conversation with Lael Stone was by far one of my favourite chats on the podcast to date. Lael is the author of 'Raising Resilient and Compassionate Children', an educator on aware parenting, sex education and child birth, a regular speaker for the Resilience Project among many other organisations and online publications and started the incredible Woodline Primary school in 2021. Lael also offers countless online programs helping thousands of parents around the country (you can find them here). Some of the topics discussed in this episode: Importance of emotional intelligence not just for parents, but as a human How your 'reactions' to others are teaching you more about yourself than the other person The importance of being a role model as a parent How to unwind self-limiting beliefs often picked up as a child and what parents should be focusing on to minimise the chance of passing them onto their children How to learn the root cause of your child's behaviour and to not let your own emotions dictate your reactions as a parent How she started the incredible Woodline Primary and what values the school was built off The balance between allowing freedom and strictness with your children The power of human connection + much more Watch Lael's TedX Talk here @laelstone Visit Lael's website THANK YOU for listening, I really do appreciate everyone who tunes in each week. You may know Ryan Shelton from 'The Imperfects' podcast with The Resilience Project founder Hugh Van Cuylenberg, or you may know him from Rove Live back in the day, or you may know him as Hamish Blake's best mate, or you may just know him for being the hilarious performer that he is! Either way, in today's KICPOD episode Ryan finds the perfect balance between making us laugh and making us think about some of life's toughest decisions. Ryan recently opened up on 'The Imperfects' about being unsure whether to have children or not, so today he delves more into this thought process and where he's currently at with the decision, plus he explains why he's ditched the smart phone and now has a 'dumb phone'. Hugh van Cuylenburg hangs up the phone - he's been speaking to his (very) pregnant wife, who's struggling at home without him. He's exhausted too, after days and days of back-to-back presentations. Oh, and the AC's not working. Needless to say, Hugh's not feeling his best going into this presentation. But a couple of minutes into his speech, he spots a boy in the middle of the audience, and something clicks. Hugh doesn't know why this particular kid stood out, or if he even really stood out, but something shifted nonetheless. Hugh remembered that even if this one kid - out of hundreds - was the only one to gain something important from that presentation, that's a win. A growing audience is great, but it can sometimes make you forget the individuals who need what you're doing… Connect with Hugh on the Resilience Project's website or listen to The Imperfects podcast You can find the full interview here: Hugh van Cuylenburg demonstrates how a string purpose fuels strong actions *** My new book Time Wise is out now. Susan Swick, MD, MPH is the Executive Director of Ohana, designing and leading the development of this Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, California. In addition to evaluation and treatment programs that are evidence-based and family-focused. Ohana programs will also emphasize the cultivation of mental health at the individual, family and community level. This Center is being created with the support of a landmark $100 million gift from a single donor in the hospital's community, reflecting a recognition on both the hospital's and the community's part that the resources available to families seeking care for their children's mental health challenges were sorely lacking. Dr. Swick has a long-standing interest in how adversity affects children and families, and in how well-timed interventions can make a critical difference. Prior to relocating to California in 2018, Dr. Swick served as the Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Newton Wellesley Hospital for five years. While at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, she created a new community health initiative called “The Resilience Project,” partnering with local High Schools to promote the mental health and well-being of youth and their families. She also directed the Parenting At a Challenging Time (PACT) program at Newton-Wellesley, a parent guidance program available to cancer patients who were still raising young children. She was an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she created and ran a course on Parent Guidance for the Child Psychiatry fellows. She attended Medical School at Columbia University, where she also received a Masters in Public Health.
