Join us as we sit down with South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftus to discuss the Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan, a program helping families save for higher education with tax advantages and incredible flexibility. Treasurer Loftus shares his personal story of setting up a 529 account for his daughter, Treasure, and watching it grow into a five-figure college fund—proving that consistent contributions, even small ones, can make a huge difference. He breaks down how the plan works like a state-tax-deductible IRA: contributions grow tax-free, and withdrawals for tuition are also tax-free. The program isn't just for college-bound high schoolers—funds can be used at accredited colleges, trade schools, and specialty programs nationwide, and even applied toward student loan repayment or rolled into a Roth IRA. Grandparents, friends, and extended family can contribute, too, giving everyone a chance to help make education more affordable. With over 200,000 participants and $7 billion in assets, Future Scholar demonstrates how smart financial planning can prevent debt and give students a head start. Treasurer Loftus walks through how easy it is to sign up at futurescholar.com and why this program has become a game-changer for South Carolina families.

“Finance is not merely about making money. It's about achieving our deep goals and protecting the fruits of our labor. It's about stewardship and, therefore, about achieving the good society.” – Robert J. Shiller  Check Out These Highlights:  Money is important because it allows us to take care of ourselves and our families. Lately, the financial service industry has been losing its way! They are laying off personnel to generate greater revenue due to cost reduction. The real question is, at what cost for the consumer and reduction in employee loyalty? I am on a mission to change what's happening in leadership in corporate America to shift from dog-eat-dog to one filled with love and accountability. My guest was introduced to me by one of my dear friends, the CEO of Hancock Lumber.  He and my guest both feel that we need to bring love back into the workplace.  About Mark Jones:  Mark is the CEO and President of Sacco & Biddeford Savings Bank. Mark, who joined in 1985 and remains committed to building on the founding principles of SBSI, meets the financial needs of Southern Maine.  He shows this commitment through his volunteer work as a board member and treasurer of Shutterbugs4Charity, board member and Vice-Chair of Hospice of Southern Maine, as well as a Trustee and Treasurer of Saco United Baptist Church.  Outside of SBSI, he has an unrivaled passion for learning, practicing, and teaching that pushes him to spend time with others who provide reminders and lessons for staying focused on those things most important in life: service, love, and care for those in his circle of influence. Across the next two episodes of PGAP, we will be showcasing the good work from CASSE NSW Inc (https://www.casse-nsw.org.au/)., who are advocating for the steady state economy in Australia. For this episode, we interview Phil Jones, Treasurer and Secretary, as he shares with us the progress of government reports and inquiries into the Circular Economy. Furthermore, why it is crucial that we encourage the government to take serious action in implementing the circular economy, rather than letting their reports gather dust in Canberra. We discuss two reports in particular: The Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group (https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/protection/circular-economy/ministerial-advisory-group), established in 2023, and: The Productivity Commission “Opportunities in the Circular Economy (https://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries/current/circular-economy/interim)” interim report The circular economy is defined by Wikipepdia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_economy#Critiques_of_circular_economy_models) as: “a model of resource production and consumption in any economy that involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible.” Phil is positive with the potential for the rollout of the circular economy in Australia, especially in its capacity to catalyse existing initiatives such as recycling programs, repair cafes, second hand exchange initiatives, etc. However, he cautions that the circular economy is alone insufficient in achieving true sustainability unless it is coupled with the Steady State Economy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steady-state_economy). That is, "an economy made up of a constant stock of physical wealth (capital) and a constant population size, which does grow over the course of time". The episode concludes with a call to action to get some real and action in response to these reports. A good place to start is by signing the CASSE NSW INC petition (https://www.casse-nsw.org.au/post/casse-nsw-s-petition-to-parliament) to establish a Federal government inquiry into the steady state economy.
