Primary and secondary school students are looking at plenty of disruption, with over 2,000 secretaries and caretakers preparing for an indefinite strike once the summer break is over. Fórsa, which represents more than 2,300 school secretaries working in primary and secondary schools, as well as 500 school caretakers, told the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth the mandate for indefinite strike action comes after the union's efforts to secure access for school secretaries to the Single Public Service Pension Scheme. Fórsa's Head of Education Andy Pike said school secretaries and caretakers remain excluded from the scheme, despite being on the Department of Education's centralized payroll since 2023. There are concerns that the strike, which is due to get underway on the 28th of August, could affect schools' opening hours. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Bernie Dillon, Secretary at St Senan's Primary School in Kilrush and Rena McGrath, Vice-chairperson and Treasurer of Fórsa School Secretaries Branch on the Clare/Galway border.

Welcome back to Fintech Takes. I'm Alex Johnson, and today we're lucky enough to dig into stablecoins (again!) with James Wester, co-head of payments research at Javelin Strategy & Research, who previously led strategic communications for blockchain, crypto, and digital currencies PayPal and served as a market research analyst at IDC.  Last time on the pod, we tackled domestic payment use cases (ACH, interchange, and why crypto UX still can't touch the Starbucks app). This time, we zoom out. First, we unpack whether stablecoins are net good or net bad for community banks. The real threat isn't deposit flight; it's being boxed out of innovation. For years, regulators told community banks to steer clear of crypto. Now Stripe's leaning into stablecoins, startups are building directly on-chain, and regulators are finally creating a bank-like charter for issuers. So who's actually being served by this “innovation”? Then: what makes stablecoins different? One word: programmability. This is money you can code. Treasurers and developers love it. And if issuers get access to Fed master accounts or card networks? It could reshape BaaS (and who gets to build on it). Finally, we tackle the hard stuff: regulation, insurance, and that annoying habit of moving the goalposts. What happens if a stablecoin fails? How do you design for risk (and communicate that risk honestly to consumers)? Why does this space keep getting held to a higher bar than banks with fractional reserves? James puts it plainly: stablecoins aren't the next hot, sexy fintech product. They're utilities; more like electricity or cell service. Nobody gets excited about who powers their outlets or offers marginally better 5G. You just want it to work. And that's where stablecoins are headed: quiet, foundational, infrastructure-grade. The real innovation won't be stablecoins; it'll be the stack built on top of it. United States Constitution, Article I, Section 8 provides:The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;Review the origins and debate over the authority to borrow money and hold debt as set forth in Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution.Understand how the Articles of Confederation provided that the debts incurred by the states and Congress would be honored, and paying down the debt was a critical reason for adopting the Constitution.  However, the Founding Fathers universally believed that the Congress under the Articles was incapable of paying the debt, and this weakness was a major reason for the calling of the Constitutional Convention.Learn how although the Constitutional Convention originally agreed that payment of the debts was mandatory and Congress would assume the debts of the States, those provisions were omitted in the Constitution.
