After a celebrated album with her debut, Frank, and with that distinct voice and sound, Amy Winehouse got very famous, very fast. Everyone wanted a second album, but Amy had entered a whole new world. On this episode, we'll hear how Amy's very private struggles with mental health and addiction became headlines for a relentless tabloid culture. And, in one of the most volatile love affairs in pop culture history, how would the story of Amy and Blake become a cautionary tale about the dangers of codependency? The day Madeleine West sat down to start recording this episode, her best friend Alicia had just gotten on a plane to move to the other side of the world. Alicia is her lifeline, her chosen family, and Madeleine was going to have to continue their friendship long distance. In this episode of Restart, Madeleine speaks to Elisabeth Shaw from Relationships NSW about why it's so hard to make and keep friends as an adult, and how we can attract 'our people'. Plus, she catches up with Alicia a few months after her move to speak about the importance of supportive friendships, and how they're staying close while far away. And on this final episode of Restart, Madeleine reflects on what she's learnt making this series. THE END BITS GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! Motherhood is an inescapable part of womanhood, whether you have children or not. Some people happily have kids, and some happily don't, and then there are the ones who want to but can't. That is Jennifer White and her husband's story. Ready to start their next chapter as parents, their inability to have children was their ultimate restart. So how do you process this new reality, when life goes in a direction you never expected or prepared for? Plus, Madeleine opens up about her life with six kids and how motherhood changed her, and speaks rawly and honestly about a recent life update. THE END BITS GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! 20 years ago, actor Madeleine West had finished a long day filming Neighbours. She was walking down Oxford St looking for some food when her life changed forever...she was hit by a bus. What followed was months and years of rehabilitation and pain, but also coming to terms that she might never look the same way again. It was the most unexpected restart of her life. On this episode, Madeleine interviews Dr Yumiko Kadota, author, doctor and cosmetic surgeon, about why so many of us want to change our appearance, and the effect our "perfect" faces are having on us. A career restart can look completely different from one woman to another. From the glass ceiling, to having a family, to changing industries, women often don't have the luxury of a linear career progression that men have. On this episode of Restart, Madeleine West speaks to two completely different but fascinating women. The inimitable Julie Bishop, who has changed careers drastically twice in her life and smashed all expectations, and Cathy O'Brien, who left the workforce for 15 years to raise her family, and found that re-entering the workforce was her biggest career challenge so far. Plus, Madeleine opens up about her biggest career restart to date: her intention to enter politics. This is an episode of Restart not to be missed. THE END BITS GET IN TOUCH Feedback? What is your purpose in life? For some it's their family, or their job, or just to make the world a better place. Khadija Gbla is one of those people; the victim of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) when she was young, her purpose in life is to work on educating the world so no young girl has to experience what she did. Meshel Laurie is another woman who has found strong purpose in her life; you'll know her as a comedian and radio host, but her journey to finding Buddhism has been her most life-changing experience to date. In this week's episode of Restart, Madeleine West speaks to both Khadija and Meshel about how they restarted and found their purpose, and what this clarity has brought to their lives. Two years ago, Madeleine West hit restart on her life. She packed up her life in Melbourne and moved to Byron Bay, split up with her partner of 15 years and the father of her six kids and she started life again. And one of her biggest moments in her restart? It was her physical move from the leafy suburbs of Melbourne to Byron. She had no choice but to start again. And that's what a tree change or a sea change does to you, it forces you to Restart. In June last year, Holly Wainwright packed up her life in Sydney, along with her partner, kids and dog, and moved to the country. And since that moment her world has changed in incredible ways. And on this episode of Restart she tells Madeleine all about it. THE END BITS Find Holly on Mamamia Out Loud or This Glorous Mess GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! Well, that is very different. On this episode, we look at how women can restart their sex lives & their relationships - whether they're in a long-term relationship or starting again. Walking the dog. On a road trip. At a girls night on a speaker. Anywhere. HOW DOES IT WORK? There are three rounds, and inside every round, 3 games, and three questions per game. Kelly is going to ask questions, you write the answers down, then at the end of each game we’ll have a score count and reveal who was right and who was wrong. For every correct answer, you’ll get a point, for every incorrect answer, you’ll get...well, nothing. WHAT WILL I NEED? Some paper, a pen or your best trivia voice. The reason we’re chatting to Teresa Palmer today has nothing to do with her acting cred (see: Ride Like A Girl and A Discovery of Witches) but everything to do with making sure that as women, we are talking more about our shared experiences. Not just the fun stuff, which we tend to do anyway, but especially when those experiences are hard. She has a new book out right now, Zen Mamas: Finding Your Path Through Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond (Ebury Illustrated, $34.99), which she cowrote with her friend Sarah Wright Olsen. And just like in the book, in our Uninterrupted chat, the mum to six-year-old son Bodhi, three-year-old son Forest and one-year-old daughter Poet; and 12-year-old stepson, Isaac, gets raw and honest. She talks about her pregnancy loss, how she and her husband Mark got through his experience of postpartum anxiety, and the way she’s navigating life through the coronavirus pandemic. In this episode we also chat about:· What she’s learnt about herself from being forced to slow down during the COVID-19 lockdowns· The guided meditations she does with her kids· The journaling app she uses to do a daily brain dump· Why she thinks we need to move away from the term “miscarriage” and talk instead about “pregnancy loss”· Cultivating moments of self-care in her day (“They are fleeting!”, she laughs)· Tiger King (because, isn’t everyone?)· Letting go of our expectations of motherhoodCredits:Your host is Lizza Gebilagin (@lizza_marie)With thanks to our guest Teresa Palmer (@teresapalmer)Your producer is Elissa Ratliff (@lizaratliff)For more from Women’s Health Australia, check out @womenshealthaus on Instagram, womenshealth.com.au or find the print and digital editions of the magazine at isubscribe.com.au.If you or someone you know are struggling with perinatal anxiety or depression, head to panda.org.au for support or call their national helpline on 1300 726 306. When Moana Hope burst onto the footy field wearing a Collingwood jersey for the debut AFLW season in 2017, it was a moment she’d been waiting for her whole life. Having kicked a football around the backyard from the age of three, this athlete, activist and all-round legend has never been afraid to speak her mind (or fight for what she believes is right), both on and off the sporting field.Raised in a family of 14 in Broadmeadows, Melbourne, by an incredibly strong mother she still credits as her biggest inspiration, she went from playing against the boys to representing Australia in one of sport’s biggest arenas at 18 years old. But last year, she made a ridiculously tough choice, withdrawing from the AFLW draft in order to support her family, including wife, Isabella, and her sister, Vinny. As she says in this raw, honest and uplifting chat: “It was either quit my job and play footy. Or play footy and quit my job. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. But it was like a forced decision. Family’s got to come first, because footy doesn’t pay the bills.”In this inspiring conversation with Women’s Health Editor, Jacqui Mooney, she opens up about resilience, marriage equality, surviving tough times, her secret love of high tea (thanks to sporting trailblazer and mentor Susan Alberti) plus her hopes and dreams for the future, including her current IVF journey. But most importantly of all, she shares a message of self-love and acceptance, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. As she says: “Unfortunately, a lot of kids these days are getting caught up on who they think they have to be. But every single person (even identical twins) has something different about them for a reason. We don’t need to be clones of each other. Just be you, and bring out your beautiful uniqueness.” If you’re looking for positivity and a little life inspo, then you’ve come to the right place. If you’re a young girl growing up in Murgon Queensland, you’re not given many options for what you can be when you grow up. As a child, Leah Purcell distinctly remembers her mother telling her, because she was a black woman from the bush, she was destined to work in a meatworks or to become a nurse. But like many young girls, she dreamed of being a dancer and from as young as four, Leah knew she wanted to be a performer. So when Leah cheekily told her mother she was going be a theatre nurse when she grew up her mother didn’t expect it would lead to her daughter winning an AACTA and a Helpmann. She also didn't reallise Leah would become one of Australia’s most popular Indigenous actors. You probably know Leah Purcell from her role as Constable Tracey Davis in Police Rescue, or the iconic aunty, Grace, on Redfern Now or more recently as Rita Connors in Wentworth. What you might not know is the story of how it all began... This discussion includes talk of suicide and depression. If you find any of the content unsettling, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. When people think of feminism, they think of Germaine Greer. Her manifesto The Female Eunuch was released in 1970 and is still shaping conversations 48 years later. But what happens when an icon - whose job it is to be provocative - exists in a culture of outrage? Most recently, the release of her Melbourne University press book On Rape has led to an onslaught of headlines condemning her brand of feminism and questioning her relevance in 2018. And she joins Mamamia Out Loud co-host Jessie Stephens to talk about it in this very special episode...
