Something To Talk About is continuing to publish across the summer break, and will be back with a brand new episode on January 12. In the meantime, we are revisiting some of your favourites from the 50 episodes we released over the past year. Today’s conversation is with Ita Buttrose, which originally aired March 2, 2024. *** Few women in Australian media - or, for that matter, the country’s public sphere as a whole - have exerted as much influence or blazed as many trails as Ita Buttrose AC, OBE. Now, as she prepares to step down from her role as chair of the ABC, the 82-year-old publishing veteran joins Something To Talk About for a frank discussion about her final months at the ABC, which have been marked by controversy and scrutiny following the departure of fill-in radio presenter Antoinette Lattouf late last year. Ita also responds to her critics, reveals whether she harbours any regrets when she takes stock of her career and shares her view on whether it is really possible to separate reporting from commentary in the era of social media and 24/7 opinion cycle. Ahead of International Women’s Day, Ita tells host Sarrah Le Marquand whether she ever suffers from the voice of self-doubt that haunts so many women, and if, after nearly six decades in the workplace, she still encounters the boys club. And, of course, after five years at the helm of the ABC, what will she do next? Something To Talk About is a podcast by Stellar, hosted by Editor-In-Chief Sarrah Le Marquand. In a chaotic Sydney share-house in the Spring of 1972, a dishevelled actor was lying naked on the fraying couch of an inner-city living room. The woman who had paid Jack Thompson $400 was wondering if the actor’s left hand was really big enough to cover his modesty and get her history-making magazine past the conservative censors who’d decide if it would make it to newsagent shelves. The best analysis of all the latest events in federal politics, from one of Australia's top ten podcasts on politics and news commentary. In this compelling episode of New Politics, we delve into the aftermath of the Dunkley byelection, an event that not only highlighted the strategic playbooks of all political parties but also underscored the ever-evolving landscape of national issues and media influence. The Labor government's victory in Dunkley, despite a swing against them, showcases their ability to connect with voters on critical matters like cost-of-living and policy solutions amidst a cacophony of negative campaigning and scare tactics from the opposition. We dissect the Labor and Liberal campaigns, scrutinising the strategies that led to Labor's win and the Liberal Party's reliance on divisive issues. Special attention is given to Peter Dutton and the Liberal leadership's controversial stance on nuclear power, a topic that has become a predictable fallback during political strife, revealing deeper issues within the party and its media alliances. We also explore the intriguing revelations from ASIO's Mike Burgess regarding espionage within Australian politics. The allegations of a former MP recruited by a foreign government to spy on Australian intelligence opens a Pandora's box of national security, media sensationalism, and the quest for increased funding for intelligence operations.Lastly, we look at the recent changes at the ABC, examining the implications of Kim Williams' takeover from Ita Buttrose. The shift in leadership occurs amidst critiques of the ABC's news coverage and its perceived alignment with the Liberal Party, sparking debate about the future of public broadcasting in Australia.Song listing:‘Crying', Strawpeople.‘Pretty Vacant', Sofia.‘Praise You', Fat Boy Slim.

The Sydney Opera House celebrates its 50th anniversary on October 20, 2023.The American architect Frank Gehry called it “a building that changed the image of an entire country” and you could argue that the modern perception of Australia has a profound relationship with that stunning structure on Sydney Harbour. Yet, it has a controversial history. Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect responsible for the iconic shell design, declined an invitation to the opening ceremony claiming he would make “negative comments”. Also, in speeches made that day, there was no mention of the building's founding father – the man who proposed the idea of an opera house for Sydney, then lobbied tooth and nail in tricky political circumstances to turn his dream into a reality. His name was Sir Eugene Goossens, an English composer and conductor who thrived in Australia after the Second World War. He became a celebrity as we understand one now, only to be run out of his adopted home in 1956 “like a diseased rat”, as one commentator wrote, his plans for the opera house in tatters. The scandal shocked and puzzled Australia in equal measure. What happened and why have this visionary man's many extraordinary achievements been largely forgotten? Music journalist Phil Hebblethwaite traces the intriguing story of Sir Eugene Goossens, meeting his niece, a former student, and experts in Australian classical music and cultural life. We'll find out that the Goossens saga was just the beginning of the troubles for the Sydney Opera House… With contributions from Jennie Goossens, Richard Bonynge, Ita Buttrose, Dr Drew Crawford and Professor Marguerite Johnson. In this episode, we look at all the recent political events, media dynamics, and questions of political favouritism. Last weekend marked the end of the national Labor conference, the first from a Labor government since Julia Gillard's tenure as Prime Minister. These conferences have long been criticised for their stage-managed nature and lack of open discussion but it does offer a chance to review the Labor Party Platform and offer members a chance to voice concerns on diverse issues, from AUKUS and nuclear weapons to asylum seekers, tax reform, and workers' rights. The conference held a surprise: a Labor Prime Minister supporting nuclear submarines. Who would have thought it 40 years ago! This development raises questions about the evolving stance of the Labor Party and Anthony Albanese's statement about the preference of long-term governance stability over short-term implementation of policy. Gough Whitlam's strategy was to “crash through or crash”, and that resulted in only three years in office but at least a lot was achieved. What's better: a long-term in office implementing a slow pace of reform, or a shorter-term doing as many things as possible? Interestingly, the Conservative Political Action Group held a conference simultaneously. This American-style event, now making its way to Australia, focuses on climate change denial, libertarianism, racism, and opposition to the Voice To Parliament proposal. It's not true conservatism, it's not true liberalism: just a culture of complaint that offers no solutions and just says “no” to everything.Shifting to the economic sphere, notable corporate profits have been reported recently. While these profits benefit shareholders, not everyone owns shares, leaving a significant portion of the population without direct benefits. This disparity highlights the need for a balanced economic structure that benefits everyone. In the political arena, controversies continue. Peter Dutton's appearance on ‘Kitchen Cabinet' sparked debates about politicians' media presence, particularly his potential prime ministerial suitability: is a national television program the right place to announce that you've got post-traumatic stress disorder? Ita Buttrose's impending departure from the ABC chairperson role triggered expectations of changes in how the ABC presents news and politics. The ABC's challenges trace back to the late 1990s, and as media landscapes evolve, the ABC's role and structure must adapt accordingly.Recent revelations involving Anthony Albanese's son's internship and a Qantas VIP pass prompted discussions on political ethics. Consistency in reporting these matters across parties and unbiased media coverage is crucial for maintaining public trust in the political system.

From experience and need, Janine evolved into specialising in toxicities and deficiencies in the body, as she found that overloads of toxins of all kinds, including heavy metals and deficiencies of essential minerals and vitamins, to be, in many cases, the underlying cause of her client's chronic diseases. This testing is done in clinic, providing real time answers. Another contributing factor to her client's symptoms is often the overlooked blood type factors and how it relates specifically to how we react to life, our emotions and diet. Janine has a passion for providing positive and safe health solutions for the whole family, supporting all conditions and symptoms from Autism to Autoimmune problems, from allergies, Thyroid and Fibromyalgia, often brought about due to a high level of toxicity or deficiency. However, more recently Janine's clients have presented mostly with brain fog and fatigue along with unusual rashes and heart symptoms. Janine also is the founder and creator of two products, Instant Calm drops, and Be Oil'd – Luxury Organic Face and Body Oils. These two products were created from a need over time by her clients for powerful, honest products that worked. In particular the Instant Calm drops are a great support in recent times for anxiety and stress. She produces both products from her Clinic/Warehouse where she also gives informative talks from time to time. On a personal level, Janine has 3 adult daughters and 5 grandchildren and a lovely Partner after being married for 45 years and Widowed. She is passionate about life, taking the ‘Road less Travelled”, meeting people at social and networking events and listening to good Jazz. Her inspiration to keep going is from Maggie Beer and Ita Buttrose, and she believes there is a serious need, now more than ever for safe, natural alternatives in health.
