“From two weeks old, I was in a bloody shop. Before I went to school I could count back change” - Ada NicodemouOur guest on this episode of Three Food Memories is Australian TV royalty and Home and Away's most favourite character Leah Patterson. But here's the twist: Ada Nicodemou isn't just a TV icon, but it's possible she could be a far-flung cousin of Savva's! They're Fasouliotes, sharing roots that go deep into the carob and almond orchards of Cyprus. On the menu is; halloumi, Greek ravioli, and birthday cake! Ada's social cause is “Save Our Sons” Her social cause is Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation which she has been an ambassador for for 16 years. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder characterised by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Symptom onset is in early childhood, usually between ages 2 and 3. The disease primarily affects boys, but in rare cases it can affect girls. You can find out how to help here - saveoursons.org.au. Send us a textTo find out more about the project and Savva - head to threefoodmemories.comInsta - @savvasavas @threefoodmemoriesEmail us at threefoodmemories@plated.com.au, we'd love to hear from you! TFM is produced and edited by Lauren McWhirter with original music by Russell Torrance.
Think for a moment, what would happen if you had a dream career, pilot, engineer, drummer - and your family absolutely did not back you in what you were trying to achieve. You're a teenager. They have your best interests at heart, they love you and just want success for you, but you might have other ideas. Would you try anyway? That's pretty much what happened with Ada Nicodemou. For 31 years she's been on Australian screens, and now she's on our bookshelves with the release of a new series of books titled “Mia Megastar”, aimed kids 8 and up. Today she speaks with Osher about her path to success, what keeps her successful, and why books are so important for growing minds. Ada Nicodemou has played the character of Leah Patterson on our screens for 24 years as one of the most iconic stars of Home & Away. In this exclusive interview, Ada tells Mia how the last few years have seen her choose herself after a lifetime of choosing others. They discuss the complexities of ending relationships and blended families, of dealing with paparazzi and tabloid culture, of ageing and beauty standards for women in the public eye, and…what it's like to kiss your on-screen partner off screen for the first time… Ada also shares her dreams and ambitions for the future…in so many ways, she's just getting started. Ada Nicodemou has just wrapped filming for the day on Home & Away, and she's feeling anything but relaxed as she gets in the car to drive home. After crying her eyes out in front of her colleagues over and over and over again, her nerves are fried, and her emotions are all over the place. That's the day-to-day business of being an actor, but Ada's learned that it doesn't mesh well with her home life. Whether she needs to re-focus in order to get everyone fed and out the door for soccer practice, or she's just having a quiet night on the couch with her family, whatever state she was in when the camera was rolling isn't going to work at home. Ada uses the drive home to slowly, methodically process the day that's been, and when she gets home, the equally methodical process of removing makeup and hair products serves as another way to ritualise the feeling of ‘switching off' after an intense day at work. Stability might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the priorities of a working actor. But for Ada Nicodemou, she's sought out and found exactly that in Home & Away. As a mother, the stereotypically chaotic and categorically unstable life of an actor has never been the right fit for Ada. Thankfully, though, her now two-decade tenure on Home & Away has provided her with a sense of security and routine almost impossible to find elsewhere in the industry. So what does that routine actually consist of? How does an actor prepare when she sometimes has to shoot sixteen scenes in one day? How does she make time to look after herself, to exercise and to eat well? And how does the school pick-up work when you've just cried your eyes out in front of all your colleagues for the fifth time in as many days? For more than 20 years, Ada Nicodemou has graced our television screens as Leah Patterson in iconic Aussie soap ‘Home & Away’, along with roles in Heartbreak High, Police Rescue, Breakers, and The Matrix. She’s been the familiar, effervescent ‘girl next door’ for as long as we can remember, but now, the queen of Summer Bay is an experienced and level-headed 43 year old woman who graciously let us in on everything from surviving the loss of a child to the importance of scheduling ‘self care’ appointments with yourself. So, what happens when you throw out the ‘Big Greek Book Of Rules’ and live life on your own terms? We find out in FORTY. So it's Mother's Day on Sunday and for many people it's going to look quite different to what it has in other years. Hopefully there will still be breakfast or a coffee in bed, but we might not be able to catch up with our own mother's with the whole family around, head for lunch or have social gatherings of more than a few people - depending on what state you're in. I read some research done by Big W that found almost 30% of Australian families don't know if they will celebrate Mother's Day this year and 17% won't be celebrating Mother's Day at all, due to the current COVID-19 climate! This just can't happen people. It has been a full on couple of months and mums need a break – especially in iso. So I reached out to Home & Away Actress and Big W ambassador Ada Nicodemou to find out how she's spending Mother's Day this year, and to get some tips on how we can still make it a special day… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
