Each year wheat farmers from every state are invited to enter the National Wheat Yield Contest to compete for the highest yield in bushels-per-acre. This year, Montana’s winner in the Dryland Winter Wheat category was an 18-year-old who farms near Ryegate. Not only did Wyatt Ramage post the top yield in the state, but he also placed 5th in the entire nation for “Percent of Yield Above the County Average”, because his per-acre-yield was over 3 times the average for his county! The National Wheat Yield Contest is a project of the National Wheat Foundation, assisted by the staff of the National Association of Wheat Growers. Winners are selected in several categories, so the List of 2025 State Winners includes both Dryland and Irrigated Winter Wheat and Spring Wheat growers from across America. In a podcast with Taylor Brown, Wyatt Ramage and his father Kelly Ramage, (who has placed in the National Wheat Yield Contest previously), discuss the contest and what it takes to accomplish their award-winning yields. Joining the Ramage Family in the Northern Ag Network Studio was Nathan Haynie, Crop Agronomist, and Area manager for Nutrien Ag Solutions in Billings. The Ramages purchased their seed and many of their crop inputs from Nutrien Ag Solutions, a leading supplier of seed varieties, fertilizer, crop protection products and agronomic expertise. During the annual Montana Seed Trade Association meeting in Bozeman this week, several industry leaders from different ag organizations joined in for a panel discussion. Northern Ag Network's Andy Schwab was the panel moderator and was joined by Montana Grain Growers Association Vice President Dale Flikkema, Montana Seed Trade Association Legislative Committee Chair Gord Pearse, Montana Grain Elevator Association Past President Jayson Hauer, and Montana Agribusiness Association Secretary Jonnie Scott. The news this Fall that a population of Feral Hogs was confirmed in Montana, sent a shockwave through the ag industry. In a state that has been on high alert for feral swine outbreaks for several years, suddenly the word came that dozens of wild hogs were reported ranging in a brushy waterway along Montana’s Hi-Line. Feral swine are an invasive, non-native species, considered one of the worst invasive species in the world. They are prolific breeders, they are highly adaptable, and can cause devastating impacts. We know how damaging wild hogs have been in other states, including North Dakota. And we are aware of another population of wild hogs that is spreading to the north of us in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. But we thought Montana was still free of this menace. Where were they found in Montana? How many wild hogs are at that location? How did those hogs get there? How do we deal with them? Can they be eradicated? In this podcast Taylor Brown dives into those questions and a lot more with Montana State Veterinarian, Dr. Tahnee Szymanski, who activated the team at the Montana Department of Livestock, to respond to what might be the largest reported outbreak of Feral Swine in Montana’s history. Montana has been aggressive in its approach to this invasive species.
